How UPI Payment Limits Work Across Banks and Apps in India (2026 Guide)

The normal UPI ceiling is ₹1 lakh per transaction, but that is only the system-level reference point. Your actual maximum is the lowest limit imposed by NPCI’s rules, the issuing bank linked to your app, the payment type, the app’s own controls and any temporary risk restriction. A bank can set a lower amount, an app can restrict transaction counts or new accounts, and higher merchant ceilings apply only to specified categories and verified merchants.

What determines your UPI payment limit?

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), an RBI-regulated entity. It routes money between bank accounts through participating apps. The app is the interface, but the bank account connected to it remains the account that sends or receives the money.

For any payment, think of the effective limit as the lowest applicable ceiling among several layers:

  • NPCI’s system ceiling: the general reference point for ordinary UPI payments.
  • The issuing bank’s account policy: the bank can impose lower per-transaction, daily or risk-based limits.
  • Payment purpose: person-to-person (P2P) transfers and merchant payments may use different rules.
  • Merchant status and category: enhanced ceilings are conditional on a verified merchant and an eligible category.
  • App controls: an app may add transaction-count, onboarding or temporary new-account restrictions.
  • Time window: a payment can be blocked by a 24-hour or 30-day cumulative amount or count even when the individual transfer is small.

Consequently, seeing a ₹1 lakh UPI limit in a support article does not guarantee that your particular account can send ₹1 lakh. The bank, app and transaction screen for that account are the final practical checks.

Standard UPI limits: the figures and who sets them

The following numbers come from different rule layers. They should not be read as one universal schedule for every bank and app.

Limit or restriction Figure Owner and qualification
Ordinary UPI maximum per transaction ₹1 lakh NPCI UPI FAQ; system-level reference for normal UPI, not a promise that every bank account allows it.
Google Pay successful P2P amount from one bank account ₹1 lakh in the last 24 hours Google Pay’s published guidance; app-specific and not a universal NPCI rule.
Google Pay successful P2P transaction count 20 in 24 hours Google Pay guidance for successful P2P payments.
Google Pay successful P2P transaction count 150 in 30 days Google Pay guidance for successful P2P payments.
Google Pay Android new-account restriction Up to ₹5,000 during the first 24 hours Temporary onboarding control described by Google Pay; not a universal UPI rule.
Google Pay iOS new-account restriction Up to ₹5,000 per 24 hours for the first three days, with ₹15,000 total over that period Temporary onboarding control described by Google Pay; not a universal UPI rule.
Illustrative issuing-bank variation in Google Pay’s table DCB Bank: ₹5,000 per transaction and ₹5,000 daily; many listed banks: ₹1 lakh per transaction and daily Google Pay’s bank table, crawled during the week of 10 October 2026; verify the current policy for your exact account.

The Google Pay figures show why an app page and an NPCI page can both be accurate while displaying different numbers. One describes an app’s operational controls; the other describes the system ceiling. A different app or bank may publish different thresholds.

Per-transaction, daily and transaction-count limits are different

A transaction limit caps one payment. A daily limit caps the cumulative rupee value during a stated period, often 24 hours rather than a calendar day. A transaction-count limit caps how many successful payments you can make during that window. A 30-day count or value limit is a separate control again.

For example, under the Google Pay guidance listed above, you could remain below ₹1 lakh on every transfer but still be blocked after 20 successful P2P payments in 24 hours. Conversely, one large transfer can fail because it exceeds the bank’s per-transaction cap even when you have made no earlier payments.

Do not assume that a failed or pending attempt has consumed the same allowance as a successful payment. The published Google Pay P2P limits are expressed in successful transactions, while a bank may apply its own treatment to failed, reversed or disputed payments. If your available amount looks wrong, ask the issuing bank how it calculates the window.

Why your bank’s limit can be lower than the NPCI ceiling

NPCI sets a framework for participating banks; it does not require every bank to expose the maximum to every account. A bank may choose a lower amount for fraud prevention, account type, customer tenure, channel risk, device changes or its own internal controls. The lower rule wins for your payment.

This is why two people using the same app can see different limits. Their accounts may be issued by different banks, or the same bank may apply different controls to different account profiles. Adding the same bank account to another app does not remove the bank’s cap.

Bank tables published by apps are useful illustrations, not permanent guarantees. They can change without the app’s general UPI help page changing, and an individual account can still be subject to a lower internal risk check. Before a high-value payment, check the bank’s current UPI terms and the amount shown in the payment flow.

Higher limits for verified-merchant payments

NPCI’s circular addendum dated 28 August 2025 introduced enhanced ceilings for specified categories aligned with tax payments. For eligible transactions, a verified merchant can receive up to ₹5 lakh per transaction under the NPCI ceiling. The circular expressly allows member banks to retain a lower internal limit.

Google Pay’s help guidance gives examples of category-specific totals:

Eligible category example Per-transaction amount in Google Pay guidance Daily amount in Google Pay guidance
Tax payments ₹5 lakh ₹10 lakh
Hospitals and educational services ₹5 lakh ₹10 lakh

These figures are not ordinary P2P limits. The category must qualify, the merchant must be verified, and your bank can set a lower ceiling. In Google Pay’s payment screen, a verified merchant may be marked with a green tick and the permitted amount may be displayed before you enter your UPI PIN. Treat that indicator as a category and merchant-status clue, not as proof that your bank will approve the full NPCI amount.

A QR code that looks like a business QR is not by itself enough to establish eligibility. Confirm the merchant name, verification indicator and category shown in the app, then check whether your bank allows the amount.

How to find the limit that applies to your account

No single number covers every account. Use this process immediately before a large or time-sensitive payment:

  1. Identify the linked bank: open the app’s bank-account or UPI settings and note the exact issuing bank and account selected for payment.
  2. Classify the payment: decide whether it is P2P, an ordinary merchant payment, a tax payment or another eligible service category.
  3. Check the bank’s current terms: search the bank’s official UPI or mobile-banking support page for per-transaction, 24-hour, daily and count limits for your account type.
  4. Check the app’s help page: look for “standard UPI transaction limits,” onboarding restrictions and any account-specific warning. Treat app figures as app guidance, not as a replacement for the bank’s rule.
  5. Review the payment screen: before entering the PIN, confirm the selected account, recipient or merchant, verification indicator and any displayed permitted amount.
  6. Calculate recent usage: add successful payments from that account in the relevant 24-hour or 30-day window and count them separately from their rupee value.
  7. Send a smaller test only when appropriate: splitting a payment can help with a per-transaction cap, but it will not defeat a cumulative amount or count limit and may create reconciliation or merchant-acceptance issues.

For a business or tax payment, retain the bank’s current terms and the transaction-screen details so you can explain a decline without guessing which layer blocked it.

Do UPI limits apply across apps?

The issuing bank’s account-level ceiling follows the account, not the app’s branding. Moving the same account from one app to another should not be treated as a method to bypass the bank’s maximum.

NPCI says that changing UPI apps requires registering again and creating a new virtual payment address (VPA) with that app’s handle. Registration can therefore introduce app-specific onboarding checks, but it does not erase the bank’s account controls. An app may also impose its own count or temporary restrictions, so two apps can show different operational messages while the bank ceiling remains the same.

If you add a second bank account, payments made from that account are evaluated against that account’s bank policy. Adding it does not raise the limit of the first account, and the app’s account selector must show which account will actually be debited.

Why a payment below the stated UPI limit can fail

A low-value decline is not proof that the headline limit is wrong. Common causes include:

  • You selected a bank account with a lower cap than another account in the same app.
  • Your successful P2P amount or transaction count has reached the relevant 24-hour or 30-day threshold.
  • The account or device is subject to a new-user, newly-added-account or other temporary restriction.
  • The recipient is a merchant category whose enhanced ceiling does not apply, or the merchant is not verified.
  • The bank’s internal fraud or risk check has blocked the payment independently of the published ceiling.
  • Several incorrect UPI PIN entries have caused the bank to temporarily block sending.

Use the exact wording on the decline screen. An “over limit” message points you toward the amount or window; a security or authentication message points toward the bank’s control or PIN process. Do not keep retrying a payment that may be blocked for security reasons.

What to do after a decline

  1. Read the message and verify the account: confirm the selected issuing bank and the recipient or merchant.
  2. Check both dimensions: compare the payment amount with the per-transaction cap, then check cumulative value and successful-payment count for the relevant window.
  3. For merchants, verify eligibility: look for the app’s verified-merchant indicator and the category shown on the payment screen. A higher NPCI category ceiling does not compel your bank to allow it.
  4. If the app says you are over a limit, wait for the applicable window or try a smaller amount: Google Pay gives this guidance for its own limit messages. Do not assume a smaller payment will work if a count or security block is the real cause.
  5. Contact the issuing bank or app support: provide the decline code, time, amount, selected account and transaction reference. Ask which limit or control was reached.
  6. Protect your PIN: never disclose it to support staff, a merchant or another person. NPCI notes that repeated incorrect entries can cause the bank to temporarily block sending, with treatment varying by bank.

Switching apps is not a reliable fix for a bank-level limit. Re-registering can also create a new VPA and temporary onboarding checks, so use it only when you have a separate reason to change apps.

Practical examples

Example: a ₹90,000 person-to-person transfer

The amount is below NPCI’s ordinary ₹1 lakh reference ceiling. It can still fail if the issuing bank’s per-transaction cap is lower, if the account has exhausted its 24-hour cumulative allowance, or if the app’s successful-payment count has been reached.

Example: three ₹40,000 transfers

Each transfer is below ₹1 lakh, but the combined ₹1.2 lakh may exceed a 24-hour amount limit imposed by the bank or app. A per-transaction check alone would miss this failure.

Example: a ₹4 lakh hospital bill

A hospital payment may fall within the ₹5 lakh category ceiling described by NPCI and Google Pay, with Google Pay listing a ₹10 lakh daily category total. Approval still depends on the hospital being a verified merchant and the issuing bank allowing the amount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: a newly added account

An app may permit only a small amount during an initial period even though the bank’s normal limit is higher. Wait for the stated onboarding window or use the support route; adding the account to another app is not a guaranteed bypass.

A reliable way to compare a bank and an app

When comparing published information, record each item separately rather than copying the largest number:

  • the exact issuing bank and account;
  • whether the payment is P2P or merchant;
  • the per-transaction ceiling;
  • the cumulative amount and whether the window is 24 hours, a calendar day or 30 days;
  • the successful transaction count;
  • new-user or newly-added-account restrictions;
  • verified-merchant status and category;
  • the date and owner of the published figure—NPCI, the bank or the app.

Recheck the bank’s current UPI terms and the payment screen before relying on any number. NPCI’s FAQ is undated, and app guidance can change; the dated 28 August 2025 circular should also be checked for later amendments.
