You can watch local broadcast stations without a cable subscription in two ways: receive them free over the air with an antenna, or subscribe to an internet live-TV service that carries stations in your market. Check your address in AntennaWeb or the FCC DTV Reception Maps before buying equipment or choosing a streaming plan; local availability depends on signal conditions and regional carriage rights.
What “local channels” means
Local broadcast channels are the stations that transmit from nearby affiliates of national networks such as ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX. They also commonly include independent stations and multicast subchannels. The same network may be available in one ZIP code and absent in another because affiliates, transmitters, terrain and provider agreements differ.

Without cable, your choice is between receiving the station’s broadcast signal yourself and paying a provider to deliver a live feed over the internet. An antenna does not require broadband and has no recurring service charge after you buy the equipment. Streaming services are easier to use in many homes and add national networks, cloud DVR or app features, but they require a subscription and a reliable internet connection.

| Factor | Over-the-air antenna | Internet live-TV service |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing cost | No monthly TV service charge after the antenna and any accessories are purchased. | Recurring subscription; fees, channel lineups and regional rights can change. |
| What you receive | Broadcast stations available at your address, including multicast subchannels. | Channels carried by that provider in your market, often including national networks and app-only content. |
| Coverage certainty | Depends on distance from towers, direction, terrain, buildings, antenna type and mounting height. | Depends on whether the service has carriage rights for your local affiliates and whether your billing ZIP code is eligible. |
| Internet requirement | None for live viewing once the antenna is connected. | Required for live channels, authentication, guide data and app playback. |
| DVR and guide | Available only if your TV, tuner or separate DVR supports recording and guide data. | Usually built into the service, but storage limits and retention rules vary. |
| Best fit | Households that want free local news, weather, sports and network programming and can receive a usable signal. | Households that want locals combined with national cable-style channels in one app. |
Start with an address-specific reception check
Do not choose an antenna from its advertised range alone. AntennaWeb explains that broadcast reception is determined by a wide range of factors. The useful information is specific to your address: which stations are predicted, how far their towers are, the direction to each tower, the radio-frequency band used, terrain and obstructions, and the antenna type and height likely to work.

Use AntennaWeb
- Open AntennaWeb’s free address lookup and enter your complete service address.
- Review the station list and note each station’s predicted distance, compass direction and RF band.
- Look for stations grouped in different directions. A cluster in one direction is easier to receive with a directional antenna; widely separated towers may require a multidirectional model or careful aiming.
- Read the antenna recommendation and height guidance alongside the obstruction information. Treat a manufacturer’s “miles” claim as a starting point, not a guarantee.
- Use the station guide to identify the network affiliates and multicast channels you actually want.
Cross-check with the FCC map
The FCC DTV Reception Maps provide another address-based view of predicted coverage. Compare the map with your building conditions: a second-floor room, a window facing the transmitters and a clear path are generally more favorable than a basement, metal-coated window or dense construction. Neither map can fully account for every interior obstruction, so use the predictions to select equipment and placement rather than as a promise of perfect reception.
Option 1: Install a free over-the-air antenna
The FCC says an over-the-air viewer needs either a digital television or an analog television connected to a digital-to-analog converter box, plus an appropriate antenna connected to the TV or converter. Most modern televisions include a digital tuner, so the converter requirement mainly affects older sets.
Choose indoor, attic or outdoor placement
- Indoor antenna: Start here when the map shows nearby stations and your home has a favorable window or exterior wall. It is the simplest and least expensive installation, but walls, foil-backed insulation, wiring and appliances can weaken signals.
- Attic or higher indoor location: Raising the antenna can improve line of sight while avoiding roof penetrations. Attic materials, ductwork and foil insulation may still block or reflect signals.
- Outdoor antenna: Consider one when towers are farther away, terrain is uneven, buildings obstruct the path or an indoor test produces dropouts. Outdoor mounting adds weatherproofing, grounding and installation requirements.
Match the antenna to the RF bands shown for your stations. If the stations use different bands or directions, a broad-band or multidirectional design may be more practical than a narrowly focused model. The address lookup should drive that decision; there is no universal antenna that receives every station in every home.
Connect the antenna and scan for channels
- Place or mount the antenna in the selected location, aimed according to the directions from your address lookup.
- Run a coaxial cable from the antenna to the television’s antenna or RF input. With an older analog set, connect the cable to the digital converter box instead.
- On the TV, open the broadcast or channel settings and choose the option usually labeled Auto Scan, Channel Scan, Auto Program or Antenna. Menu names differ by manufacturer.
- Select the over-the-air, antenna or air mode rather than cable mode, then start the scan.
- Wait for the scan to finish and test the stations you care about at different times of day. Save the results before moving the antenna.
A successful scan may list a station’s virtual channel number even when its RF signal is transmitted on a different frequency. That is normal; the TV maps the broadcast signal to the familiar channel number.

- Compatibility and Usage Tips: Not suitable for older analog televisions; supports smart TVs and digital TVs. For optimal signal reception, try placing the antenna near a window or in other locations, and test both vertical and horizontal orientations.
- Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).
When to rescan
Broadcasters sometimes change transmission frequencies while keeping the same virtual channel number. If a previously available station disappears, picture quality changes after a station announcement, or the FCC advises viewers in your area to rescan, repeat the television’s channel-scan procedure. A rescan does not improve a weak signal by itself; it makes the tuner search the currently assigned frequencies.
Fix common antenna reception problems
Some channels are missing
- Confirm that the TV is in antenna/air mode and that the scan completed.
- Compare the missing station’s direction and RF band with your antenna’s orientation and capabilities.
- Move the antenna near a window or higher on the wall, then scan again.
- If stations come from opposite directions, test a different orientation or an antenna designed for multiple directions.
- For a distant or obstructed station, test an attic or outdoor position rather than relying on an indoor placement.
The picture breaks up or freezes
Digital television usually appears clear until the received signal falls below the tuner’s threshold, at which point it may pixelate, freeze or vanish. Reposition the antenna, reduce cable length where practical, and inspect connectors for looseness or corrosion. A powered amplifier can help compensate for long cable runs or signal splitting, but it cannot restore a station blocked by terrain or a building and can overload a tuner when strong stations are nearby. Change one thing at a time and rescan or retest so you know which adjustment helped.
One TV works and another does not
Each television and cable run has its own tuner sensitivity and loss. A splitter divides the available signal, and a damaged cable or connector can affect only one room. Test the weaker TV directly from the antenna, bypassing the splitter. If reception improves, the distribution system—not the broadcast signal—needs attention. An amplified distribution system may be appropriate after confirming that splitting is the cause.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWeather changes reception
Rain, snow, temperature inversions and wind-driven movement can alter signal paths. If problems occur only during certain weather, verify that the outdoor antenna is firmly mounted, the cable connection is sealed and the antenna has not shifted. Persistent seasonal changes may require a higher or differently aimed installation, but do not assume a larger antenna alone will solve a terrain or obstruction problem.

Can an antenna receive ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX?
It can, when those affiliates transmit a receivable signal at your address and your antenna covers their RF bands and directions. The answer is not universal: a nearby metropolitan home may receive all four, while a rural or obstructed location may receive only some. Enter your address in AntennaWeb or the FCC map, identify the specific affiliates listed there, and choose placement based on their combined directions. Do not buy an antenna solely because its packaging names those networks.
Option 2: Use a paid live-TV streaming service
Internet-delivered multichannel services, often called virtual multichannel video programming distributors (vMVPDs), stream live channels through an app instead of a cable box. The FCC notes that local broadcast inclusion varies by provider and market. You therefore need to check availability with your own ZIP code before subscribing.
Hulu + Live TV
Hulu + Live TV offers a market-availability tool for local and national channels. Enter your area and verify the exact ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX or independent affiliates shown before paying. The lineup and regional rights are location-specific and can change, so an advertisement for another city is not evidence that your local station is included.

What to verify before subscribing
- Enter your billing ZIP code in the provider’s official channel-availability tool.
- Confirm each required local affiliate by call sign or network, not just a generic “local channels” label.
- Check whether your home internet meets the provider’s current bandwidth and device requirements.
- Review DVR capacity, simultaneous-stream limits, local sports restrictions and cancellation terms.
- Test the service on every TV, streaming device or smart-TV platform you plan to use.
Because provider lineups, fees and regional rights are volatile, avoid relying on an old channel chart or a price quoted for a different market.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Option 3: Combine an antenna with streaming
A hybrid setup lets the antenna handle free local broadcasts while an internet service supplies national networks and app content. This can reduce dependence on a provider’s local carriage decisions and preserve local viewing during an internet outage, while still giving you a unified guide on compatible equipment.
AirTV-based arrangement
AirTV requires both an OTA antenna and an AirTV adapter/player. The adapter receives the antenna signal and integrates local channels with internet channels in its supported interface. Connect the antenna to the adapter, connect the adapter to your home network as directed by its current documentation, scan for stations, and then sign in to the supported streaming app. Confirm device compatibility before purchase because supported televisions and app features can change.

Sling documents adding antenna channels to its guide on compatible LG and Vizio televisions. The usual sequence is to connect the antenna to the TV’s tuner, complete an over-the-air scan, open Sling on the compatible TV, and enable the option to display antenna channels in the guide. The antenna channels remain dependent on local reception; Sling’s guide integration does not increase signal strength.

DVR, guide and multi-TV considerations
An antenna by itself supplies live video but not necessarily a program guide or recordings. A television with built-in guide support, a compatible tuner/DVR or an adapter such as AirTV can add scheduling and playback. Verify whether recordings are stored locally or in a service account, how many tuners are available for simultaneous recordings, and whether the device supports the television platforms in your home.
For multiple TVs, decide whether each set will use its own antenna, a distribution amplifier and splitter, or a network tuner that streams the antenna signal. Every additional cable run introduces loss, and network tuners depend on your home network even though the original broadcast does not depend on broadband.
Make the decision by household priority
- Lowest recurring cost: Check the address maps and try an antenna first. Budget for better mounting, cabling or a DVR only if your reception test shows the need.
- Most predictable app experience: Choose a live-TV provider after confirming every required local affiliate in your ZIP code and reviewing its device and DVR limits.
- Locals plus broad national coverage: Combine an antenna with a streaming subscription, using the antenna for stations the provider does not carry.
- No reliable broadband: Favor an antenna, because live streaming and hybrid guide features require an internet connection.
- Several towers in different directions: Compare multidirectional and directional antenna options against the map, and be prepared to test placement rather than trusting a range label.
A practical installation checklist
- Run your address through AntennaWeb and the FCC DTV Reception Maps.
- Write down the stations you need, their directions, RF bands and predicted distances.
- Choose an initial indoor, attic or outdoor location based on those conditions.
- Connect the antenna to a digital TV or to a converter box for an analog set.
- Run an over-the-air channel scan and test the important stations.
- Reposition, raise or re-aim the antenna if stations are missing or unstable; then scan again.
- If you want national networks, DVR functions or a single app, check current local lineups for Hulu + Live TV, Sling or another provider.
- For a hybrid system, verify the exact TV, adapter and app compatibility before buying.
The reliable path is address-first planning: use the maps to set realistic antenna expectations, use provider ZIP-code tools to confirm streaming carriage, and choose a hybrid only when its added guide and app convenience justify the subscription and internet dependence.
