First identify the country’s hallmarking system, then inspect the complete mark set, verify any official identifier, and obtain an independent assay when the evidence is missing or inconsistent. A hallmark can document an official purity check, but the meaning of each symbol, legal exemption and verification tool depends on where the item was sold or assayed.
Before paying, ask for an itemized receipt that states the article, net precious-metal weight and fineness. If a stamp is unreadable, conflicts with the advertised purity or cannot be checked through the relevant authority, pause the transaction or make it conditional on testing by a recognized assay facility.

What a hallmark can—and cannot—prove
Fineness describes the proportion of pure gold in an alloy, expressed in parts per thousand. A mark of 750 therefore indicates 750 parts gold per 1,000, with the balance made up of other metals. Carat (or karat, written as k) expresses the same idea on a 24-part scale, so the number and the carat designation should describe the same claimed purity when the local rules use both.

The UK Government’s practical guidance describes a hallmark as a mark showing that an article was independently tested and verified against its description and the legal purity standards for the metal. That statement applies to the UK framework; it is not a universal legal definition.
#1 Best Overall
A lone number is not automatically an official hallmark. Some countries permit voluntary marking, some identify gold through a manufacturer or trademark, and some products are exempt from marking because of their type or weight. Treat the mark as evidence to interpret, not as a substitute for checking the applicable authority and the seller’s paperwork.
Start with the country and the applicable system
Ask where the item is being sold and where it was hallmarked. The same number or symbol can have a different legal meaning in another country. Establishing the jurisdiction prevents you from applying a UK, US or Indian check to an item governed by a different system.
| Market or system | What the available guidance says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | A full hallmark identifies the sponsor (the party that submitted the article), the metal fineness and the assay office. A date letter may appear but is optional. | Look for the complete set and confirm that any exemption or weight rule applies to the article. |
| United States | Gold may be identified by nearby signage or verbal information rather than a mark on the article. If an item is marked, the World Gold Council says a trademark should be close by to identify its origin; fineness is commonly expressed in parts per thousand. | Match the mark to the seller’s written description and verify current federal or state requirements when a legal question matters. |
| India | For BIS-hallmarked jewellery, the mark set includes the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-character alphanumeric HUID. | Use the BIS CARE HUID verification feature and check that the invoice contains the required details. |
| Other countries | Rules vary, and hallmarking can be voluntary in some markets. A number or assay-office symbol is not a worldwide decoder. | Use the national regulator, assay office or other officially recognized route for that country. |
How to read fineness numbers such as 375, 750 and 916
Convert a fineness stamp to a percentage by dividing it by 1,000. The result tells you the claimed gold content by mass, not the item’s total weight in gold. A 10-gram piece marked 750, for example, claims 7.5 grams of gold and approximately 2.5 grams of other alloying metals before accounting for manufacturing details or stones.

| Stamp | Mathematical meaning | Carat relationship and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 375 | At least 375 parts gold per 1,000, or 37.5%. | UK practical guidance uses 375 for 9-carat gold. The legal standard belongs to the jurisdiction applying the mark. |
| 750 | 750 parts gold per 1,000, or 75%. | An Assay Office FAQ gives 750 as an example for 18-karat gold under the local Jewellery Act it discusses. Do not treat that example as a rule for every country. |
| 916 | 916 parts gold per 1,000, or 91.6%. | Sellers commonly associate 916 with approximately 22-carat gold because 22/24 is about 916.7. Confirm the local standard and the complete hallmark rather than relying on the number alone. |
Purity does not by itself establish colour, durability, resale value or whether a stone is natural. Two pieces with the same fineness can differ in alloy recipe, workmanship, weight and condition. Verify those separate characteristics on the invoice.

Inspecting a UK hallmark
Under the UK system described by government guidance, read the marks as a set:
- Sponsor’s mark: identifies the party that submitted the article for hallmarking.
- Fineness mark: states the precious-metal content in parts per thousand.
- Assay-office mark: identifies the office that tested and marked the article.
- Date letter: may identify a year, but its inclusion is optional.
Inspect the item under strong, even light. A 10x jeweller’s loupe can make a tiny stamp easier to read, but magnification only helps you record the mark; it does not authenticate the stamp or test the metal. Write down every symbol in order, including letters, shapes and numbers, before comparing it with current UK guidance or asking the assay office to interpret it.
Do not infer that every unmarked UK item is unlawful. Exemptions exist, including rules linked to the article and a minimum weight threshold. Check the current requirement for the exact product and date of sale. An exemption explains why a mark may be absent; it does not confirm the seller’s claimed purity.
Verifying an Indian BIS hallmark and HUID
The BIS process applies to articles represented as BIS-hallmarked in India. Its HUID FAQ describes three elements to look for: the BIS logo, purity expressed in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit or six-character alphanumeric HUID. This checklist is India-specific and should not be used as a universal hallmark decoder.

- Locate the full mark set. Use good light and, if necessary, a loupe to record the BIS logo, the carat/fineness declaration and the HUID exactly as stamped.
- Open the BIS CARE app. Select the HUID verification function and enter the identifier without changing characters that look similar, such as zero and the letter O.
- Compare the returned record. Check that the record corresponds to the article and purity described by the seller. A record that does not appear, or does not match, is a reason to stop and ask BIS or the seller for clarification before paying.
- Check the invoice. BIS jeweller guidance says an invoice for a hallmarked precious-metal article should separately state the description, net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges.
Mandatory hallmarking applies in districts covered by the relevant quality-control order where at least one assaying and hallmarking centre is available, according to the government consumer information cited by BIS. District coverage and operating rules can change, so check current BIS guidance for the place and date of purchase.
What to do when buying in the United States
The World Gold Council’s overview notes that US gold may be identified through nearby signage or verbal information instead of a mark on the article. When a gold item is marked, a trademark stamp should be in close proximity to identify its origin. Consequently, ask the seller to put the claimed fineness, manufacturer or trademark and price in writing rather than treating an isolated number as conclusive.
Because the overview is not a complete statement of every US statutory requirement, consult the relevant regulator or a qualified assay professional when the transaction involves a legal dispute, imported goods or a high-value piece. Preserve the advertisement, sales messages and receipt so the written description can be compared with any test result.

- Identify the governing country. Ask where the item was sold and where it was assayed. Note whether the seller says the piece is exempt from local marking rules.
- Inspect all surfaces. Look inside a ring, near a clasp or on a tag under good light. Record every symbol, not merely the largest number.
- Match the complete set to official guidance. For the UK, look for sponsor, fineness and assay-office marks, with a date letter only if present. For India, use the BIS logo, purity/fineness and HUID requirements.
- Ask the seller to explain the mark. The answer should be specific enough to write on the receipt. Evasive explanations or changing descriptions are warning signs.
- Request an itemized invoice. Ensure the description, fineness and weight are stated. In India, also check the separate BIS-required fields and hallmarking charge.
- Compare physical and written details. The stamp, invoice, advertisement and any HUID record should describe the same item.
- Set a verification condition for uncertainty. If a mark is missing, unreadable, contradictory or unverifiable, do not complete an unconditional purchase.
Comparing verification routes
| Route | What it does | Official recognition | Documented result | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visual inspection with a loupe | Reads a small stamp and helps you record its symbols. | None by itself; it does not test composition. | Your notes or photographs only. | First inspection before asking the seller or authority. |
| Country-specific mark lookup | Interprets a complete hallmark against the system that issued it. | Depends on the national authority or assay office. | May provide an official explanation; availability varies. | Checking whether the symbols fit the claimed jurisdiction. |
| BIS CARE HUID lookup | Checks the HUID record associated with a BIS-hallmarked Indian article. | BIS system for HUID-bearing articles. | App result that can be saved with the purchase records. | Verifying an Indian BIS claim before payment. |
| Recognized assay-centre test | Examines the metal or a submitted sample and reports fineness. | Use a facility recognized under the applicable local scheme. BIS identifies recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres for consumer testing. | Request a receipt or report stating the measured fineness. | Resolving an unreadable, conflicting or high-value claim. |
These routes answer different questions. A lookup checks whether an identifier belongs in a system; a physical assay addresses the metal’s composition. Neither replaces a written sales description when you need to establish what was promised.

When and how to arrange independent testing
Escalate when the seller will not explain the mark, the purity number and carat description disagree, a HUID cannot be verified, the article is valuable enough that a mistake would matter, or the item is being sold as exempt without a clear legal basis.
- Ask the national regulator or an established assay office which facilities are currently recognized for consumer work.
- Before surrendering the item, ask whether the test is non-destructive, whether a sample is required and what report or receipt will be issued.
- Record the item’s weight, stones, visible marks and condition. Photograph it with the seller’s description and retain the chain-of-custody receipt.
- Request a result that states the measured fineness and identifies the submitted article or sample.
- Compare the result with the receipt and seller’s claim. If they differ, stop resale or alteration until you understand the discrepancy and the local remedy.
For BIS-related consumer testing, BIS says jewellery or a sample may be submitted to a recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. Follow the centre’s current instructions and keep the issued receipt. Procedures, fees and available methods differ outside India.
Why common home checks are not proof
A magnet, scratch test, acid kit or electronic meter may be marketed as a quick answer, but the official material considered here does not establish comparative accuracy for home testers. Plating, solder joints, hollow construction, stones and alloy differences can make an informal result misleading. Do not present a home reading as an assay result to a buyer or insurer.
A loupe has a narrower role: it helps you see a tiny hallmark. It cannot tell whether a counterfeit stamp was applied, whether the entire article has the stated composition or whether a hidden section differs from the marked part. If the purchase decision depends on purity, use the recognized testing route for the relevant country.

Red flags that justify walking away
- The seller points to a single number but cannot identify the country or marking system.
- The fineness on the item differs from the fineness on the invoice or advertisement.
- A purported UK hallmark lacks the other marks that the applicable guidance says form the full set, with no explanation of an exemption.
- An Indian article advertised as BIS-hallmarked has no readable HUID, or the BIS CARE result does not match.
- The seller refuses an itemized receipt, will not state net precious-metal weight or pressures you to pay before verification.
- A test result is offered without identifying the article, method, measured fineness or issuing facility.
None of these signs alone proves that an item is counterfeit, but each removes evidence you would need to make a defensible purchase. Pause, obtain clarification or choose a seller willing to document the claim.
Keeping records after the purchase
Store the original invoice, photographs of the marks, any app verification and assay report together. Record the seller’s legal name and the date and location of sale. These documents help if you later insure, resell, return or dispute the item. Do not have a hallmark polished away or altered before a disagreement is resolved; preserving the original evidence matters.
For cross-border purchases, retain the country of sale and the country of assay separately. A mark that was valid in one jurisdiction may not satisfy the import, consumer-protection or hallmarking rules of another. Ask the destination country’s authority how it treats foreign marks before assuming the original stamp will be accepted.
