1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerify the lender through the appropriate state regulator before you submit an application, send identification, or pay any fee. Confirm the company’s legal name and authorization, match its phone number and website to regulator records, inspect a complete written offer, and compare the total cost with other lenders. A promise of guaranteed approval in exchange for an upfront payment is a major advance-fee scam warning.
Registration is only an identity and authorization check. It does not prove that a loan is affordable, that every term is favorable, or that an unsolicited caller or website is genuinely connected to the registered business.

Use this verification sequence before sharing sensitive information
- Identify the legal business. Record the lender’s exact legal name, any trade name, physical address, phone number, website, email domain, and the state where you live.
- Check state authorization. Use your state banking, financial-services, or lending regulator’s official lookup, and contact the regulator or state attorney general if the result is unclear.
- Review available disciplinary information. Ask whether the regulator lists enforcement actions, license restrictions, or disciplinary orders for the company or relevant individuals.
- Screen the contact details. Search the company name and phone number with terms such as “review,” “complaint,” and “scam.” Treat results as clues, then match the details against official records.
- Demand a complete written offer. Obtain the APR, amount borrowed, amount actually disbursed, payment schedule, every fee, late-payment charges, optional insurance, and any prepayment term before accepting.
- Compare at least several offers. Compare total repayment and the amount you receive, not just the advertised monthly payment.
- Clarify the credit inquiry. Ask whether the lender will use a soft inquiry or a hard inquiry and obtain your permission before the report is pulled.
- Stop if approval requires an advance payment. A fee demanded in exchange for guaranteed approval is an advance-fee scam signal. Do not send money until you understand exactly what a legitimate, disclosed fee covers.
Establish who the lender is
Collect the lender’s legal identity
Offers often use a brand name that differs from the entity signing the contract. Ask for the legal name of the lender, the name of any broker or marketing company involved, its mailing address, and the state license or registration identifier it relies on. Save the offer, emails, text messages, caller ID, and the exact phone number that contacted you.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not rely on a logo, a familiar-sounding name, or a web address alone. A scammer can copy a legitimate company’s branding or use a look-alike domain. The legal name on the proposed agreement must correspond to the business identified by the regulator.

Check your state’s regulator
The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to check whether a lender is registered in the state and to contact the state attorney general or the state banking or financial-services regulator. The correct office depends on your state, the provider’s legal status, and the type of loan. A general internet search is not a substitute for that agency’s records.
Search the regulator’s official database using the lender’s legal name, not only its marketing name. Confirm that the authorization is active, covers your state, and applies to the product being offered. If the database does not identify the company, call the regulator using contact information from the regulator’s own website and ask how personal-loan lenders are checked in your state.
A regulator lookup can establish whether an entity is authorized or whether disciplinary information is available. It cannot establish that the website, caller, or email in front of you is affiliated with that entity. Independently match the contact information and the legal name in the final agreement.
Use NMLS only within its proper scope
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance describes NMLS Consumer Access as a free way to check whether a financial-services company or professional is authorized in a state and notes that state regulators may provide disciplinary-order information. That guidance is specifically about mortgage loans. Not every personal-loan lender is necessarily required to appear in NMLS.
If the lender or product falls within a state’s NMLS-regulated activities, use the database as one verification step. For an unsecured personal loan that does not appear, do not treat the absence as proof of fraud or proof of legitimacy. Ask your state regulator which licensing system applies to that lender and product.
Screen complaints, search results, and contact channels
Search for patterns, not a single rating
The FTC recommends searching a company name and phone number with words such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” This screening can reveal repeated reports of undisclosed fees, impersonation, payment demands, or failure to fund. Search the exact phone number and email domain shown in your offer; a complaint about a different number may concern a different business.

Online complaints are not a legal finding. A positive review does not verify licensing, and a negative review does not by itself prove misconduct. Use search results to identify questions, then resolve those questions through the state regulator and the written contract.
Match every way the company contacts you
- Compare the phone number in the message with the number in the regulator’s listing and the lender’s independently located official website.
- Check whether the email domain exactly matches the company’s domain. Extra words, substituted letters, and unusual country domains deserve scrutiny.
- Type the web address yourself rather than clicking a shortened link in an unsolicited text or email.
- Ask the representative to send the complete agreement and fee schedule from the same legal entity that will fund the loan.
- End the call if the representative refuses to identify the lender, will not provide documents, or pressures you to act immediately.
Read the written offer before you apply or accept
Documents and terms to request
Ask for a written offer or agreement that identifies the lender and states the complete cost. The documents should let you determine how much debt you incur, how much money reaches your account, when payments are due, and what happens if you pay late or early.
- Annual percentage rate (APR), including how it is calculated and whether it is fixed or variable.
- Principal or amount borrowed.
- Amount disbursed to you after origination or other deductions.
- Payment amount, due date, frequency, and number of payments.
- Total amount scheduled to be repaid.
- Origination, documentation, application, appraisal, and other upfront or recurring fees.
- Optional credit, disability, or other insurance and whether it is included automatically.
- Non-filing insurance or similar charges on a secured loan, if applicable.
- Late-payment charges, grace periods, and consequences of default.
- Any prepayment charge or other restriction on paying the balance early.
- Privacy notice and the company’s customer-service contact information.
Understand common personal-loan fees
CFPB guidance lists origination fees, documentation fees, optional credit or disability insurance, non-filing insurance for some secured loans, and late fees as possible charges on personal installment loans. The existence of a fee is not automatically evidence of a scam; the critical questions are whether it is disclosed, optional or required, included in the APR when applicable, and stated by the lender before you agree.
| Charge or term | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Origination fee | Whether it is deducted from the loan proceeds or added to the balance | Your amount disbursed may be lower than the amount borrowed |
| Documentation or application fee | The exact amount, timing, and service it covers | You can distinguish a disclosed processing charge from a payment demanded for guaranteed approval |
| Optional insurance | Whether credit or disability coverage is optional, its premium, and cancellation terms | Insurance can raise the cost beyond the advertised payment |
| Non-filing insurance | Whether it applies to a secured loan and how it is charged | It may be a separate cost tied to collateral and filing practices |
| Late fee | Amount, grace period, and when it is assessed | A low payment can become expensive if your payment arrives late |
| Prepayment term | Whether an early-payoff charge or restriction exists | It affects your ability to refinance or eliminate interest early |
Request the entire fee list in writing. A historical FTC consumer alert about hidden-fee practices illustrates why an advertised rate or payment is not enough; you need the full list of charges and the final agreement.
Separate legitimate disclosed fees from advance-fee scams
The FTC’s consumer guidance states: “Legitimate lenders will not promise you a loan or other credit without knowing your credit history, but demand you pay them first.” The warning concerns a payment demanded in exchange for a guaranteed loan or guaranteed approval.
That warning does not mean every fee collected before funding is fraudulent. The FTC notes that legitimate lenders may charge an application or appraisal fee. The distinction is the promise and the disclosure:

| Situation | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|
| Application or appraisal fee described in the written agreement | Verify the amount, whether it is refundable, when it is charged, and what service it pays for. Compare the complete cost with other offers. |
| “Pay insurance,” “pay taxes,” or “send a deposit” to guarantee approval | Treat the demand as a serious advance-fee scam warning. Do not pay for a guaranteed result. |
| Fee appears only after you provide personal information | Pause and request the original agreement and full fee schedule from the verified legal lender. |
| Representative refuses to explain a charge or says it must be paid by gift card, wire, cryptocurrency, or unusual payment method | Stop communicating through that channel and verify the entity with your state regulator. |
Never let urgency replace documentation. A legitimate lender can explain the charge, identify the contracting entity, and provide terms for you to review.
Compare offers using the complete cost
CFPB and FTC guidance recommends comparing several lenders and asking for the entire fee list. Build a side-by-side worksheet before choosing. The offer with the smallest monthly payment may have a longer term, a larger origination deduction, or a higher total repayment.
| Comparison item | Offer A | Offer B | Offer C |
|---|---|---|---|
| APR and rate type | Enter the written figure | Enter the written figure | Enter the written figure |
| Amount borrowed | Enter principal | Enter principal | Enter principal |
| Amount disbursed after deductions | Enter net proceeds | Enter net proceeds | Enter net proceeds |
| Origination and other required fees | List each fee | List each fee | List each fee |
| Optional insurance | Included or declined | Included or declined | Included or declined |
| Payment amount and frequency | Enter schedule | Enter schedule | Enter schedule |
| Total scheduled repayment | Enter total | Enter total | Enter total |
| Late charges and grace period | Enter terms | Enter terms | Enter terms |
| Prepayment charge or restriction | Enter terms | Enter terms | Enter terms |
Compare the amount you actually receive with the amount you must repay. If a lender deducts an origination fee from a stated $10,000 loan, for example, your cash proceeds may be less than $10,000 even though interest is calculated on the contract’s principal. Use the exact figures in your agreement rather than an advertised example.

Consider the cost, payment schedule, flexibility, and your ability to make every payment. A regulator’s authorization does not make an offer affordable or suitable.
Handle unsolicited “live check” offers carefully
A preapproved check mailed to you may be a loan offer. CFPB guidance warns that cashing or depositing the check can be treated as accepting the loan’s terms. Do not deposit it merely because it is made payable to you.
Before taking any action, read the fee disclosures, APR, payment schedule, agreement, privacy notice, and sender’s contact information. Verify the sender through the relevant state regulator and compare the offer with other lenders. If the documents do not clearly show the total cost or the legal lender, do not cash or deposit the check.

Know what credit inquiry you are authorizing
Applying for credit usually permits a lender to obtain your credit report. CFPB guidance says this is often a hard inquiry that can affect a credit score. Asking about rates or general eligibility should not, by itself, require a hard pull.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ask the representative, in clear terms, “Will this be a hard inquiry or a soft inquiry?” Confirm when the inquiry will occur and which company will make it. If you are comparing lenders, ask whether they can provide a preliminary quote without a hard inquiry. Do not assume that “prequalification” has the same meaning at every lender; read the disclosure.
What to do when a lender fails a verification step
If you cannot confirm authorization
Do not submit an application or send identity documents while the lender’s status is unresolved. Contact your state banking, financial-services, or lending regulator using its official contact information. Explain the lender’s legal name, product, state, and contact details and ask which agency has jurisdiction.
If the offer changes after you agree
Stop and compare the new terms with the original written offer. A higher fee, changed APR, new insurance, or demand for a “release” payment requires a fresh review. Do not rely on verbal assurances; request a revised agreement from the verified lender.
If the representative pressures you
End the interaction if you are told to act immediately, conceal the offer from someone, pay through an unusual method, or provide a fee before receiving complete terms. Save messages and documents so the regulator can identify the company and contact channel.

If you are seeking a personal loan because current payments are unaffordable, compare the loan with a nonprofit credit-counseling option before borrowing more. The FTC says nonprofit credit counseling is often free or low cost. A counselor can help review your budget and debts; this is separate from verifying a lender and does not make any particular loan appropriate.

Frequently asked questions
What if the lender is not listed in NMLS?
NMLS guidance cited by the CFPB is mortgage-focused, so an absent personal-loan lender is not automatically fraudulent. Ask your state regulator which database and license category apply to the lender and product.
Can a registered lender still send a fake offer?
Yes. Registration identifies an authorized entity, but it does not prove that an unsolicited caller, website, or email is affiliated with that entity. Match all contact details independently and sign only an agreement naming the verified legal business.
Is an application fee always illegal?
No. The FTC notes that legitimate application or appraisal fees can exist. The warning sign is a payment demanded to guarantee approval, especially when the charge is not fully disclosed in the written agreement.
