Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallBefore you provide a Social Security number, bank details, identity document, card number or other sensitive information, verify the vacancy and the recruiter through channels you find independently. Locate the employer’s official website, check that the exact role appears on its careers page, and contact the organization through a phone number or email address published there. For a federal position, find the announcement directly on USAJOBS rather than trusting a link in an email.
Do not pay to get a job, deposit a check and forward money, buy equipment from a required seller, or treat HTTPS as proof that a site is genuine. A legitimate company can be impersonated, and scammers can copy a real advertisement, so no single reassuring clue settles the question.

Use this verification sequence before sharing anything sensitive
Job scams often imitate ordinary recruiting: a polished listing, a familiar company name and a request to complete “onboarding.” The safe approach is to separate verification from the message that brought you the opportunity. Every important fact should be confirmed through a route you locate yourself.

1. Pause before entering personal or financial data
Do not submit a Social Security number, bank-account number, card details, identity document, account password or similar information merely because a posting looks professional. Fake onboarding forms are designed to collect identity and payment information. The FBI notes that criminals can ask for the same details a genuine employer may eventually need, which is why confirming who is requesting them and why they need them comes first.

Information can be appropriate after a real employer has identified you, completed its hiring process and explained the payroll or background-check requirement. The timing and the independently verified identity of the requester matter more than the form’s appearance.
2. Find the employer independently
- Type the company’s known web address yourself or search for the organization by name; do not use the link in the suspicious message.
- Open the official careers or jobs section and search for the exact title, location, employment type and requisition number.
- Compare the duties, salary range and application instructions with the advertisement you received. A missing, materially different or already-closed listing needs an explanation before you proceed.
- Inspect the domain character by character. Extra words, substituted letters, unusual endings or a domain that is merely similar to the company’s name can indicate impersonation.
- Call the organization’s switchboard or use an address published on its independently found website. Ask whether the vacancy exists and whether the named recruiter works there.
The absence of a matching listing is not conclusive proof of fraud: a posting may have expired, be internal, or be distributed through a recruiting agency. It is a reason to stop relying on the original message and obtain confirmation directly. A company website is not conclusive either; scammers can build convincing sites. Verify the domain and contact details, then confirm the role with the organization through a known route.
3. Verify the recruiter and the communication channel
Compare the sender’s email domain with the employer’s independently confirmed domain, and ask the employer’s published recruiting contact to confirm the person’s name and role. A personal mailbox unrelated to the company, an address with a one-character domain variation, or a recruiter who cannot be verified should be treated as an unresolved risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReview how the interview is being conducted. Interviews conducted only through email or online chat, poor spelling and grammar, pressure to act immediately, and compensation far above normal for the work are indicators that deserve additional checking. They are not automatic proof: genuine employers may use text-based screening, and a real recruiter can make a writing error. Assess the clues together rather than relying on one “scam detector.” FTC staff guidance puts it this way: “There’s no sure-fire way to detect a job scam, but there are indicators that should raise your suspicions – for example, email from personal accounts not affiliated with a company, poor spelling and grammar, interviews conducted solely via email or online chat, salaries out of line with industry norms, and requests for account numbers or other personal data.”

4. Treat requests for money as a stop signal
Never pay an employer for a job, promised access to employment, required training, screening or a work permit. Be especially cautious when a supposed employer tells you to buy equipment, software or gift cards from a specified seller and promises reimbursement. Stop the process rather than trying to recover the fee later.
Do not deposit an employer’s check and send part of the proceeds elsewhere. A fake check can appear in your account before the bank reverses it, leaving you responsible for money you forwarded by wire, gift card, cryptocurrency or another method. An employer should not route company funds through your personal account or ask you to transfer money on its behalf.
5. Treat HTTPS as a security feature, not an identity check
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your browser and a website. It does not prove that the site belongs to the employer named in the advertisement. Criminals can obtain HTTPS certificates for lookalike or fraudulent sites, so verify the domain, vacancy and contact person independently even when the address bar shows a lock icon.
Warning signs and the appropriate response
| Signal | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The exact vacancy is missing from the employer’s careers page | A scammer may have copied a genuine advertisement, altered an old one or created a listing that exists only on a job board. | Contact the employer through an independently sourced switchboard number or recruiting address and ask it to confirm the role. |
| A lookalike domain or several similar domains appear in messages and search results | Impersonators use small spelling changes, extra words or alternate endings to resemble a real organization. | Type the verified address yourself and avoid signing in or uploading documents through the questionable domain. |
| The recruiter uses a personal or unverifiable email account | The sender may have no connection to the organization represented in the advertisement. | Have the employer’s published contact confirm the recruiter’s identity and the opening. |
| Interview is only by email or chat, writing is poor, pay is unusually high, or you are pressured to decide immediately | FTC guidance identifies these as indicators associated with employment scams, though none proves fraud alone. | Pause and verify the role, recruiter and process through independent channels. |
| A request for account numbers, identity documents or other sensitive data arrives before a verified hiring process | Fake onboarding can harvest identity and financial information. | Do not submit the information until the employer and the reason for the request are confirmed. |
| A fee, equipment payment, check-forwarding request or money transfer is required | These are common employment-scam payment patterns and can create losses that are difficult to reverse. | Stop communicating about the transaction; do not pay, deposit or move funds. |
| The site uses HTTPS | Encryption protects the connection but does not authenticate the operator. | Continue with domain and employer verification; do not treat the lock icon as approval. |
How to check a federal job or a message claiming to be from USAJOBS
For a federal opening, navigate to USAJOBS yourself and search for the announcement, agency, location and announcement number. Do not assume that an email link leads to the genuine service. Check the destination before clicking, avoid unknown attachments, and go directly to USAJOBS when a message looks unusual.

USAJOBS says its service will not ask by email for Social Security or financial information and directs users back to the service for account changes. That statement applies to communications claiming to come from USAJOBS; it is not a rule that every legitimate employer will never request such information during a properly verified hiring process. If you are uncertain, contact the service before following the message’s instructions.
Compare two job leads without turning clues into a score
When two opportunities compete for your attention, compare the same verification dimensions for each. This is a checklist for investigation, not a points system: one reassuring feature cannot cancel a serious unresolved problem.
| Dimension | Question to answer | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Role on the official site | Does the exact title, location and requisition appear on the employer’s independently found careers page? | The official page address and the matching job details. |
| Recruiter identity | Has the employer confirmed the person through a published switchboard number or recruiting contact? | The name, department and confirmation method. |
| Domain and email alignment | Does the recruiter’s domain match the verified organization, without lookalike spelling? | The full sender address and the domain you independently verified. |
| Interview process | Is there a coherent process beyond an email or chat exchange, and can the stated interviewers be verified? | Interview details obtained through the employer, not only through the suspicious message. |
| Timing and scope of data requests | Are sensitive details requested only after the employer and hiring process are confirmed, with a clear purpose? | The stated purpose and the stage of hiring when the request was made. |
| Money or transfers | Does anyone ask you to pay, buy from a prescribed vendor, deposit a check or route funds? | Any payment instructions, invoices, checks or transfer requests; do not execute them. |
What to do if you already shared information or money
If you sent money or moved funds
Contact your bank, card issuer or payment service promptly and explain that the transaction may be employment fraud. Ask what cancellation, recall or account-protection steps remain available. Preserve the advertisement, messages, payment instructions, receipts, check images and account records; they can help the financial institution and investigators.

If you disclosed account or identity information
Stop responding through the suspicious channel. Contact the affected financial institution using the number on its official website or on your card, not a number in the message. Change credentials that may have been exposed and tell the legitimate organization being impersonated. Keep a dated record of what you disclosed and when.

Report the listing and the impersonation
Use the job platform’s reporting process so it can review or remove the listing. Notify the real company through verified contact information. In the United States, report the fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FBI also directs employment-scam victims to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). If you are outside the United States, use your national consumer-protection and cybercrime reporting services; USAJOBS-specific reporting instructions apply only to that federal service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why independent verification matters even on a familiar job board
A job board can host a copied advertisement or a listing posted by someone pretending to represent a real company. The employer name may be genuine while the contact details, application form and payment instructions are not. Conversely, a real vacancy may be altered after being copied, such as by changing the recruiter’s address or adding a request for a fee. The platform’s familiarity therefore does not authenticate the poster.
Search the company name with terms such as “scam,” “complaint” or “fraud” as an additional check, but do not treat search results as a final verdict. A lack of complaints is not proof that a listing is genuine, and a complaint may concern a different person or role. Confirmation from the organization through independently obtained contact details is stronger evidence.
How common are employment scams?
Historical FBI figures illustrate the scale without describing current risk. An FBI warning published April 21, 2021, reported that 16,012 people had reported being victims of employment scams in 2020, with losses totaling more than $59 million. The same warning said 2,349 victims had reported $5 million in losses nationwide as of March 5, 2021. These are dated reports from the FBI’s warning, not current rates, forecasts or a count of every employment scam.

FTC consumer guidance also describes a more recent pattern in which supposed recruiters contact people by text or email and request financial details before an interview or hiring decision. The pattern reinforces the practical rule: verify first, disclose later.
Questions to ask the purported employer
- What is the exact requisition number, and where is it listed on your official careers page?
- Can your switchboard or published recruiting address confirm that this recruiter works for you?
- Why is this information needed now, who will receive it, and what verified system should I use to submit it?
- Does the company require any payment, equipment purchase, check deposit or transfer? A legitimate answer should not require you to pay for employment or move money through a personal account.
- Can I call back using the number on your independently found website rather than the number in this message?
A refusal to answer, a demand that you use only the original message’s contact details, or escalating pressure is a reason to end the exchange.
Limits of the test
No verification method guarantees that a job lead is safe. Domains can be registered recently, genuine sites can be compromised, and a scammer can provide convincing documents or impersonate a real employee. The goal is to remove avoidable uncertainty before disclosure: confirm the employer, confirm the role, confirm the recruiter, and reject payment or money-routing requests.
