Verify the account before you transfer any money. Obtain the hostel’s payment instructions through a phone number, website, signed agreement or in-person contact that you found independently. Enter the account number and IFSC in your bank’s beneficiary-name lookup for NEFT (or the bank’s IMPS validation, if available), then compare the displayed name with the payee you confirmed. Stop when the names conflict or the hostel suddenly changes its bank details. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced a beneficiary account-name lookup for NEFT and RTGS so a remitter can see the name held in the beneficiary bank’s Core Banking Solution before initiating a transfer. Its 30 December 2024 circular says participating banks should provide the facility through internet and mobile banking and at branches by 1 April 2025. The lookup is an identity clue, not a tenancy or ownership certificate. Someone can open an account in their own name and falsely claim to collect rent for a hostel. Use the bank check together with independent confirmation of the property, agreement and payee.
Prepare the details before opening your banking app
Collect the information in one place and compare it with your agreement or receipt:
- Hostel or property name and its full address.
- Name of the owner, company or authorized manager who is collecting rent.
- Beneficiary account number and IFSC, copied from a written instruction rather than retyped from a chat image.
- Amount, due date, security deposit (if any), rent period and the reason for the transfer.
- A telephone number, email address or office contact obtained independently from the hostel’s official listing, your signed agreement or a prior visit.
Call that known contact and read the account number and IFSC back to the hostel. Do not rely on the same messaging account that delivered an unexpected “updated” bank detail. Ask the contact to state the account-holder name as it should appear in the bank’s records. Keep the written confirmation.
When the account is in a person’s name
A proprietor may legitimately collect rent in a personal name, and a manager may collect on an owner’s behalf. That difference needs an explanation, not a guess. Request a written statement in the agreement or on an official hostel communication identifying the person, their role and the property for which they may collect rent. If the hostel refuses to explain why the beneficiary differs from the contracting party, do not pay.
How to check a hostel account for NEFT
- Open the bank’s official payment flow. Sign in through the bank’s normal mobile or internet-banking app or website. Avoid links sent by the purported hostel.
- Start a new NEFT beneficiary or transfer. Enter the beneficiary account number and IFSC exactly as supplied. Many banks show a name-lookup result before you save the beneficiary or authorize a one-time transfer.
- Read the displayed name. RBI’s facility fetches the name from the beneficiary bank’s Core Banking Solution. Compare spelling, initials and the legal name with the independently confirmed payee. A result that is blank, unavailable or clearly different is a reason to stop, not an invitation to continue.
- Do not authorize yet. A lookup is separate from sending money. Take a screenshot or write down the displayed name and the date, then call the known hostel contact if anything is unclear.
- Only after reconciliation, review the final screen. Check account number, IFSC, amount, beneficiary name, payment purpose and any scheduled date. Confirm that the transfer is NEFT rather than another rail if the hostel specifically requested it.
The RBI circular directed banks to offer the lookup through internet banking, mobile banking and branches. If your bank does not show a name, contact it through the number on its official website or visit a branch. Treat an unavailable facility as “not verified”; it is not a name match.
What the NEFT result means operationally
The name response is generated from the beneficiary bank’s records using the account number and IFSC you entered. It is a pre-payment check, not a debit or a confirmation that the hostel has accepted your booking. If you alter one digit and run the lookup again, you may receive a different name or no usable result. Always compare the exact details on the final transfer screen with the details you independently confirmed.

How IMPS verification differs
NPCI describes IMPS as an instant, 24×7 interbank transfer service. Its product information lists a ₹5 lakh per-transaction limit for channels other than SMS and IVR; your bank can impose lower limits or additional controls. Neither method’s speed, limit or successful processing proves that the recipient is authorized to collect hostel rent. Fees and customer-specific limits can vary by bank; check the confirmation screen and your bank’s schedule.
Choosing a rail when both are available
Choose based on your bank’s displayed validation, limits, fees and your need to pause—not on urgency alone. If NEFT gives you a clear beneficiary-name result and IMPS does not, NEFT provides the stronger pre-authorization check. If you use IMPS, make sure any validation result is visible before you enter the transaction PIN or one-time password. - The account number and IFSC identify an account whose recorded name is the one displayed by the beneficiary bank.
- You have an opportunity to catch a transcription error or an obviously unrelated payee before sending.
- Your records can show which details you checked and when.
What it cannot establish
- That the account belongs to the hostel, landlord or property advertised.
- That the person named by the bank has authority to collect your rent.
- That the room exists, is available, or will be provided under the promised terms.
- That the account is free from complaints or previous fraud reports.
For example, a name matching an individual manager can still be fraudulent if the manager is impersonated or no longer works at the property. Obtain authorization through a known hostel channel and retain the agreement.

Search the I4C suspect repository carefully
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) provides a suspect-identifier search that accepts identifiers such as bank account numbers at its suspect repository. A listing is a reason to investigate, not a final finding: I4C explains that the repository is based on public complaints, can contain errors, is incomplete and does not certify the authenticity of complaints. A clean search does not clear an account.
Consider SEBI Check as an additional account-detail check
SEBI Check labels a facility for checking account details for safer NEFT and RTGS transfers. Follow the tool’s current instructions and do not assume that every hostel-rent account or bank is covered. Use it as an extra signal alongside the bank’s own lookup and direct confirmation, not as a replacement.
Verify the transaction context
- Compare the rent demand with the signed agreement, including the beneficiary’s role and the exact rent period.
- Ask for a receipt or invoice that states the property address and payer name.
- Be cautious when someone creates urgency, demands a “refundable” transfer to reserve a room, or changes the beneficiary after you have agreed to pay.
- Never share your banking password, card PIN, one-time password or remote-access code with a hostel representative.
Common warning signs that deserve a pause
A changed account sent shortly before the due date, a request to pay a different person without documentation, or pressure to use an unfamiliar payment link should all trigger independent confirmation. - Stop the payment. Do not save the beneficiary or authorize a test transfer.

- Re-run the lookup. A typing error in the account number or IFSC can produce a different name. Obtain the details again through the known channel and compare every digit.
- Walk away if the discrepancy remains. A discount, deadline or threat that the room will be released is not a reason to override a mismatch.
A small spelling variation can have benign causes, but you should not decide which cause applies without confirmation from an authorized contact. Do not infer legitimacy from a partial match.
If you already transferred money and suspect fraud
- Contact your bank immediately through its official app, website number or branch. Give the transfer reference, amount, date, beneficiary details and the reason you suspect fraud. Ask what recall, hold or complaint process is available; do not assume recovery is guaranteed.
- Report the incident through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal’s financial-fraud route at cybercrime.gov.in. Submit the transaction reference and preserve the acknowledgement.
- Save the agreement, rent demand, chats, emails, phone numbers, screenshots, account-name result and bank correspondence in their original form.
- Do not send an additional “processing,” “unlock” or “refund” fee to anyone claiming they can recover the first payment.
Neither a bank complaint nor a cybercrime report guarantees recovery or a universal resolution time. Prompt reporting gives the bank and authorities the transaction information while it is still available.

- The signed agreement and any renewal or rent-demand notice.
- The account number, IFSC, displayed beneficiary name and date of the lookup.
- The independently verified contact used to confirm the instructions and the written response.
- The final NEFT or IMPS confirmation, reference number, amount and payment purpose.
- The hostel’s receipt and any message acknowledging the payment.

Does every bank show an account name for IMPS?
