What you are actually verifying
“Financial planner” is a job description, not one nationwide license. A person may hold several credentials, registrations or licenses, each governed by a different organization. Start by identifying the exact claim the planner made, then check it in the record maintained by the relevant authority.

| Claim | Primary record to check | What the result can establish |
|---|---|---|
| CFP® certification | CFP Board’s Verify a CFP Professional tool | Whether the person is currently certified, identity and company details, and any CFP Board public disciplinary history displayed |
| Certified Public Accountant (CPA) | NASBA CPAverify, followed by the relevant state Board of Accountancy when needed | Jurisdiction and current basic license information in participating jurisdictions |
| Broker or registered representative | FINRA BrokerCheck | Registration, employment history, licensing and certain regulatory, arbitration and complaint disclosures in FINRA’s records |
| Investment-adviser representative | SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) or the applicable state securities regulator | Registration and disclosures for advisers under SEC or state oversight |
| Insurance producer | The applicable state insurance regulator | State license status and any information that regulator makes public |
A CPA license does not by itself authorize investment advice. CFP® certification is a private professional certification, not a government license. A broker registration, adviser registration and insurance license authorize different activities. Do not treat initials as interchangeable or assume one clean record covers every role a planner performs.

Save the date of each search and the record’s status. Regulators update databases, participation can change and a result that is accurate today may not answer a question about an earlier period. Keep a copy or screenshot of the result, including the URL, so you can compare it with the planner’s later disclosures.
How can I check if someone is a CFP?
1. Use CFP Board’s verification tool
Search the planner’s name in CFP Board’s own “Verify a CFP Professional” tool. Add the company or location when the search permits it. Open the matching profile and compare the displayed name, company and location with the information the planner gave you.
2. Read the status carefully
Confirm that the record says the certification is current. CFP Board’s search can also return people who held certification in the past. A former or inactive listing is not the same as current CFP® certification, so do not stop at a name match. Check whether the profile identifies the same employer and location and whether the dates make sense for the service you are about to receive.
3. Review the public discipline information shown
Read any CFP Board public disciplinary history attached to the profile. Treat an empty discipline section narrowly: it means no entry is displayed in that CFP Board record, not that no regulator, employer or other authority has ever received a complaint or taken action. Note the type of action, date and status rather than assuming every entry has the same significance.
4. Understand the database’s boundary
CFP Board says its page may not contain every fact available from regulators, employers or other sources. If the planner’s identity, company, dates or status do not line up, ask for an explanation and verify the issue with the relevant regulator rather than assuming the profile is complete. CFP Board also directs consumers to FINRA BrokerCheck, the SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure system and state securities or insurance regulators when those sources apply to the planner’s role.
How do I check if my financial advisor is a real CPA?
1. Search CPAverify
Enter the CPA’s name in NASBA CPAverify and confirm the state or other jurisdiction shown. Match the result to the planner’s firm and location. CPA licensure is jurisdiction-specific, so a name appearing in one state does not establish a license in another. If the planner supplied a license number, use it to reduce the chance of confusing two people with similar names.
2. Account for participation limits
NASBA reported that 53 jurisdictions participated in CPAverify as of March 12, 2026. If the person is licensed in a nonparticipating jurisdiction, the search produces no clear match, or the displayed information appears incomplete, go to that jurisdiction’s Board of Accountancy lookup or contact the board directly. A national interface cannot replace the state board that issues and disciplines the license.

3. Know what CPAverify does not provide
CPAverify’s stated public record is basic current license and contact information. It does not provide education, employment or historical information, and it is not the route for filing a complaint. For license history, discipline, complaint procedures or a question about a particular period, ask the state Board of Accountancy for the authoritative answer. Ask what documentation the board needs if you are reporting a concern; do not assume that a database search itself opens a complaint.
4. Do not overread a CPA result
A current CPA license confirms the person is licensed to practice accountancy under that jurisdiction’s rules. It does not establish CFP® certification, broker or adviser registration, an insurance license, fiduciary status in every engagement or competence for the investment strategy you are considering. Clarify whether the CPA will prepare taxes, provide planning, recommend investments or perform all of those services, then verify each authorization separately.
Where can I look up a financial advisor’s license or broker history?
Search the person and firm in FINRA BrokerCheck
Use the planner’s full name and firm, then compare the profile’s identity, current and former registrations and employment history with what you were told. If available, review licensing, regulatory actions, arbitrations and complaints. Ask for the individual’s CRD number when names are similar; it is a stronger identifier than a name alone. Search the firm as well as the individual because the firm’s record can provide context for the person’s registration.
Read disclosures in context
Open each disclosure and note the event type, dates, status and disposition rather than treating every entry as equivalent. A disclosure may concern a prior employer or an allegation that was resolved differently from how it was first reported. Ask the planner to explain any entry in plain language and to provide the underlying document when the issue could affect your decision. Compare the explanation with the record and, if necessary, ask FINRA or the applicable state regulator how to interpret the filing.

Know BrokerCheck’s limits
BrokerCheck contains information in FINRA’s records and does not cover every kind of civil, employment or other matter. FINRA identifies categories that are outside its scope. Therefore, a clean BrokerCheck result is not a universal clean-background certificate. Follow up with state securities regulators or other official records when your question extends beyond FINRA’s database. The absence of a displayed complaint is not proof that no complaint was ever made; it only describes what appears in that system.
Check investment-adviser and insurance oversight separately
Investment advisers
Some professionals are subject to SEC oversight and appear in the SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure system; others are overseen by a state securities regulator. CFP Board directs consumers to those sources depending on the professional’s status. Search the individual and the firm, and confirm that the registration is current for the services being offered. A person may be registered in one capacity but not another, so match the record to the actual advice or transaction proposed.
Insurance professionals
An insurance agent or producer needs the applicable state insurance license. Use the state insurance regulator’s official lookup for the state in which the transaction occurs or the agent is licensed. A securities or CPA record does not substitute for an insurance-license check. If the planner recommends an insurance product, ask which entity is licensed to sell it and whether the person or firm is acting as an agent, broker or in another disclosed capacity under that state’s rules.

People with several roles
A planner may be a CPA, a CFP® professional, a broker, an adviser representative and an insurance producer at the same time—or only some of these. Check every role that affects your engagement. The absence of one registration does not prove wrongdoing if the person is not offering that service, but offering a regulated service without the relevant authorization is a reason to pause and ask the regulator. Get the answer in writing before signing an agreement or moving money.
How to decode unfamiliar initials after a planner’s name
When a designation is unfamiliar, do not infer its value from impressive-looking initials. FINRA’s Professional Designations database describes listed designations’ requirements, continuing-education rules, complaint-handling procedures and ways to verify them with the issuer. Use it as a reference, then confirm the designation directly with the issuing organization and look for a public status lookup. Ask what the designation permits its holder to do and whether it is relevant to the service you need.
FINRA’s disclaimer is explicit: “FINRA does not approve or endorse any professional credential or designation.” A listing therefore helps you understand what a title claims to require; it is not an accreditation, recommendation or finding that the title makes someone qualified for your situation. If the issuer cannot confirm the person’s status or will not explain how complaints are handled, treat the designation as unverified.
Compare two or more records without confusing them
If a planner supplies several records, compare them on the same factual axes. This prevents a current credential in one field from masking an expired or missing authorization in another.
| Comparison point | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Identity match | Do the legal name, firm, location and CRD or SEC number identify the same person? |
| Status | Is each record current, inactive, former, expired or unknown? |
| Authority and jurisdiction | Which board, regulator or issuer controls the record, and in which state or federal system? |
| Scope | Does the credential cover accounting, financial planning, securities, investment advice or insurance? |
| Dates | When did the license, registration or certification become effective, and was it current on the date you checked? |
| Public history and limits | What discipline, complaint, arbitration or regulatory information is displayed, and what does that database say it excludes? |
Do not rank different credentials as “better” solely by their initials. First determine whether each one authorizes the activity the planner proposes to perform. A designation may show education or continuing-study requirements without being a license, while a license may authorize a narrow activity without demonstrating broad planning expertise.

A no-result or mismatch requires investigation, not a snap judgment. Common explanations include:
- A spelling, middle-name or suffix variation.
- A firm name that changed after a merger or move.
- A license held in a different state or in a jurisdiction that does not participate in a national search.
- A former credential that is no longer current.
- Different update schedules between a national interface and a state board.
- A person who is not authorized to use the claimed credential.
Ask the planner to explain the discrepancy in writing and provide the relevant license, CRD or SEC number. Then confirm the explanation with the issuing board or regulator. Do not treat a bare no-result as proof of misconduct, and do not rely on an unexplained mismatch when the person is asking you to transfer money or sign an advisory, brokerage or insurance contract. Pause the transaction until the relevant authority confirms the status.

When to contact a board or regulator directly
Use the official contact channel when the database is silent, the jurisdiction is not covered, the dates matter, or you need disciplinary and complaint information that the public interface does not show. State the exact question: whether a license was active on a particular date, whether a name variation belongs to the same licensee, which services the authorization covers, or how to file a complaint. Give the board the planner’s full name, firm, license or registration number and the result you already found. Keep the response with your verification notes.
Direct contact is especially important for CPA records because CPAverify does not include education, employment or historical information and is not a complaint-filing route. It is also appropriate when a BrokerCheck result does not answer a state-law question or when an insurance transaction involves a state other than the one in which the planner’s office is located.
Questions to ask the planner after the searches
- Which legal entity will provide my advice, prepare my return or sell the product?
- Which credential or license authorizes each service you propose?
- What are your current license, CRD or SEC numbers?
- Why does a database show a different firm, location, status or date?
- Does a displayed disclosure concern you personally, a former employer or another party, and what was its disposition?
- Which regulator should I contact if I have a complaint about this service?
- Are you acting as a broker, investment-adviser representative, insurance producer, CPA, CFP® professional or another capacity for this engagement?
Consistent, documentable answers should match the official records. Evasive answers, pressure to skip verification or a request to rely on a screenshot instead of the issuing authority are reasons to stop and investigate further.
A practical verification checklist before you hire
- Write down the planner’s exact name, firm, location, credentials and proposed services.
- Check CFP Board for current CFP® status and read any displayed CFP Board discipline.
- Check CPAverify and, when necessary, the state Board of Accountancy.
- Search the individual and firm in BrokerCheck if securities registration or brokerage activity is involved.
- Check SEC IAPD or the state securities regulator for adviser oversight.
- Check the state insurance regulator if insurance is part of the recommendation.
- Use FINRA’s designation reference to decode unfamiliar initials, then verify with the issuer.
- Record the date, status, jurisdiction and database limitations for every result.
- Resolve every identity, date, firm or jurisdiction mismatch before relying on the credential.
These checks tell you whether a claimed authorization or certification appears in the appropriate official record. They do not guarantee competence, honest conduct, fiduciary treatment in every engagement or suitability for your goals. Use the results as one part of hiring due diligence, alongside a clear written description of services, compensation, conflicts and the regulatory capacity in which the planner will work.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I verify a financial planner’s credentials?
Get the person’s legal name, exact credential, firm, location and applicable CRD or SEC number. Check CFP Board for CFP® status, CPAverify and the state accountancy board for a CPA, BrokerCheck for broker records, SEC IAPD or a state securities regulator for investment-adviser oversight, and the state insurance regulator for insurance licensing.
How can I check if someone is a CFP?
Use CFP Board’s Verify a CFP Professional tool. Match the profile’s identity, company and location, then confirm that the status is current. The tool can show people who formerly held certification, so a name match alone is not enough.
How do I check if my financial advisor is a real CPA?
Search the name in NASBA CPAverify and confirm the jurisdiction and firm. NASBA reported 53 participating jurisdictions on March 12, 2026. If the jurisdiction does not participate or the result is unclear, contact that state’s Board of Accountancy.

Where can I look up a financial advisor’s license?
The correct lookup depends on the role. Use BrokerCheck for broker registration, SEC IAPD or a state securities regulator for investment advisers, and the applicable state insurance regulator for insurance producers. A CPA or CFP® record does not replace these checks.
Does a clean BrokerCheck result mean the planner has no complaints?
No. BrokerCheck contains FINRA records and excludes categories of civil, employment and other matters. A clean result means no covered entry is displayed there, not that no complaint or misconduct exists anywhere.
Does a CPA license prove someone can provide investment advice?
No. CPA licensure authorizes accountancy under the relevant jurisdiction’s rules. Investment advice, brokerage activity and insurance sales may require separate registrations or licenses.
Recommended Free Tools
What if I cannot find the planner in a database?
Check spelling, former names, firm changes, location and jurisdiction. Confirm whether the system covers that jurisdiction and whether the credential is former or inactive. Ask for the license or registration number, then verify the explanation with the issuing board or regulator.
Does CFP Board’s discipline section show every complaint?
No. It shows public disciplinary information in CFP Board’s record. CFP Board says its page may not include all information held by regulators, employers or other sources.
Does CPAverify show a CPA’s full history?
No. CPAverify describes current basic license and contact information. It does not provide education, employment or historical information and is not the complaint-filing route. Contact the state Board of Accountancy for those questions.
Does FINRA endorse designations listed in its database?
No. FINRA states, “FINRA does not approve or endorse any professional credential or designation.” Use the database to understand requirements and verify the title with its issuer.
