How to Value Alphabet Stock With a Discounted Cash Flow Analysis

A discounted cash flow (DCF) values Alphabet by estimating the cash its businesses can generate, discounting those cash flows to today, and converting enterprise value into an equity value per share. The answer is not a single objective price: it is a range produced by assumptions about Search and other services growth, Cloud economics, artificial-intelligence infrastructure spending, taxes, capital intensity, the discount rate, and terminal growth.

Use Alphabet’s filed financial statements as the starting point, keep the cash-flow definition consistent with the discount rate, model the investment cycle explicitly, and compare the resulting conservative, base, and optimistic values with a dated quote for the same share class. The framework below is designed to be implemented in a spreadsheet without relying on a black-box calculator.

What a DCF is actually estimating

A DCF asks what future cash flows are worth in present dollars. In an enterprise-value model, you forecast unlevered free cash flow (cash available to both lenders and shareholders), discount each forecast year’s cash flow at a rate that reflects the risk of the whole business, and add the present value of a terminal value representing cash flows after the explicit forecast period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The core calculation is:

Enterprise value = present value of explicit-period UFCF + present value of terminal value

You then bridge from enterprise value to equity value:

Equity value = enterprise value + cash + relevant non-operating assets − debt − other claims

Finally:

Value per share = equity value ÷ appropriately diluted shares outstanding

This is an intrinsic-value estimate under stated assumptions, not a prediction of where Alphabet’s market price will trade. A range is more informative than a target quoted to the nearest cent.

Start with dated Alphabet filings

Anchor historical inputs to a period and an as-of date. Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K supplies the annual baseline for the year ended December 31, 2025. The Q2 2026 Form 10-Q supplies the latest balance-sheet, cash-flow and share-count context in the available filings, for the quarter and six months ended June 30, 2026.

Input Reported amount Period or as-of date How to use it
Capital expenditures $80.6 billion Six months ended June 30, 2026 Use as a capital-intensity reference; it is not a full-year 2026 total.
Class A shares 5,868 million Outstanding July 15, 2026 Point-in-time common shares; not a diluted weighted-average EPS denominator.
Class B shares 835 million Outstanding July 15, 2026 Point-in-time common shares; check the filing and your valuation convention.
Class C shares 5,527 million Outstanding July 15, 2026 Point-in-time common shares; update if a newer filing is available.
Earlier Class A/B/C disclosure 5,822/837/5,438 million Outstanding January 28, 2026 Useful for explaining share-count movement, but the later filing is preferable for a valuation anchored after July 2026.

The six-month cash-flow statement must not be annualized mechanically. Build a full-year forecast from annual history and current operating evidence, then use the quarterly filing to update cash, debt, investments, capital spending and shares as of your valuation date. Management’s Q2 2026 discussion of revenue growth, demand and investment is context for your assumptions, not a guarantee that recent growth will persist.

Alphabet’s reported common-share disclosures total 12,230 million shares as of July 15, 2026 (5,868 million Class A, 835 million Class B and 5,527 million Class C). That sum is not automatically the correct denominator: include potentially dilutive securities according to the filing and your chosen valuation date, and account for expected repurchases or issuance in the forecast.

Choose a consistent free-cash-flow definition

For an enterprise DCF, forecast unlevered free cash flow (UFCF). A practical formulation is:

UFCF = EBIT × (1 − cash tax rate) + D&A − capital expenditures − increase in operating working capital + or − other operating adjustments

Use operating profit before interest because the enterprise discount rate values cash available to all capital providers. Do not subtract interest in UFCF and then discount at a rate that already reflects the debt-equity mix; that mixes an equity cash-flow measure with an enterprise discount rate.

Alphabet reports a company-defined free-cash-flow measure. In its Q2 2026 earnings release, Alphabet states: “We define free cash flow as net cash provided by operating activities less capital expenditures.” The release is available as an 8-K exhibit. Reconcile that historical measure to operating cash flow and purchases of property and equipment, but do not silently substitute it for forecast UFCF. Report your adjustments for cash taxes, working capital, stock-based compensation, restructuring, leases, acquisitions and other items.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stock-based compensation deserves an explicit policy. It is a non-cash expense in the period granted, but continuing dilution or repurchases made to offset it is an economic cash cost. Either model dilution in the share count, include expected buybacks as a cash use, or explain why your treatment captures both effects without double counting.

Build the explicit forecast year by year

1. Forecast revenue by business driver

Break revenue into drivers rather than applying one growth rate to the whole company. A useful structure separates advertising, Cloud and other services, then assigns each driver a level, growth rate and fade path. Search demand, advertiser pricing, distribution economics, cloud consumption, subscription adoption and new products can have different growth and margin profiles. Start with the 2025 annual figures and the Q2 2026 trend, label every forecast year, and make the eventual deceleration visible.

Do not convert one quarter’s growth rate directly into a perpetual assumption. A base case should normally fade growth as the revenue base becomes larger; an optimistic case can assume stronger adoption or monetization, while a conservative case can assume slower demand, tougher competition or weaker pricing.

2. Forecast operating margins and expenses

Project operating expenses by function or as a percentage of revenue, then derive EBIT. Show whether margin expansion comes from operating leverage, mix, pricing, productivity or a specific cost reduction. Artificial-intelligence infrastructure can raise depreciation and data-center operating costs before capacity produces revenue, so avoid assuming that every incremental revenue dollar carries the recent margin immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Model cash taxes and working capital

Apply a cash-tax rate to operating profit, not simply the statutory rate to reported pretax income. Reconcile unusual tax items and deferred taxes where material. Forecast receivables, payables, deferred revenue and other operating balances as percentages of the relevant revenue or expense drivers, and calculate the annual investment in working capital. A growing business can consume cash even while accounting profit rises.

4. Separate depreciation from capital expenditure

Depreciation is added back in UFCF, while capital expenditure is a cash deduction. Forecast both independently. Alphabet’s $80.6 billion of capital expenditure for the six months ended June 30, 2026 signals unusually important capital intensity, but it does not establish a full-year run rate or prove that each dollar will generate immediate revenue. Connect new capacity to expected utilization, useful lives, depreciation and eventual cash returns.

5. State policies for leases, acquisitions and investments

Decide whether lease payments are treated as operating costs or financing flows and use the same convention in the discount rate and enterprise-to-equity bridge. Keep acquisitions out of recurring UFCF unless you are explicitly modeling their purchase price and incremental cash flows. Non-operating equity investments and marketable securities belong in the bridge only if they are excluded from operating cash flow and are measured consistently.

6. Select a forecast horizon

Five to ten explicit years is common for a business undergoing a major investment cycle. Use a longer horizon when near-term capex, depreciation or growth is clearly not representative of steady state. Extend the forecast until margins, reinvestment and growth converge to defensible long-run relationships; otherwise terminal value may hide unresolved near-term assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the discount rate without breaking consistency

For UFCF, use a weighted average cost of capital (WACC) or another enterprise discount rate. A standard expression is:

WACC = (E ÷ (D + E)) × cost of equity + (D ÷ (D + E)) × after-tax cost of debt

Estimate the cost of equity with a documented risk-free rate, equity-risk premium and beta or another defensible risk method. Use market-value weights and a current, class-appropriate equity value when available. For debt, use a current borrowing cost and tax rate consistent with the cash-tax assumptions. If Alphabet’s net cash position makes debt a small weight, show that rather than forcing a large debt contribution.

Your discount rate should reflect the risk of the cash flows you forecast. A high-growth, high-capex scenario may warrant a different risk assessment from a mature, lower-growth scenario, but changing WACC merely to obtain a preferred valuation is not defensible. Keep nominal cash flows with a nominal discount rate and real cash flows with a real rate; do not mix currencies, inflation conventions or mid-year and year-end timing without adjustment.

Calculate terminal value carefully

Perpetual-growth method

The Gordon-growth formula is:

Terminal value at year n = UFCF in year n + 1 ÷ (WACC − perpetual growth rate)

Year n + 1 UFCF equals the final explicit-year UFCF grown by the terminal rate. The terminal growth rate must be below WACC and should be compatible with a mature economy and Alphabet’s long-run reinvestment needs. A high terminal growth rate can dominate the result because it reduces the denominator.

Exit-multiple cross-check

You can cross-check the perpetual-growth result with a mature-company multiple applied to a final-year operating metric, but the multiple must be justified by comparable economics and a consistent definition of EBITDA, EBIT or cash flow. Do not present an unsupported multiple as a fact. If the methods diverge materially, investigate the forecast rather than averaging them mechanically.

Calculate the terminal value as a percentage of total enterprise value. When it represents most of the DCF, the share price is primarily a statement about distant growth, margins, reinvestment and discount-rate assumptions. Extend the explicit forecast or narrow the assumptions only when the business evidence supports doing so.

Use transparent scenarios instead of one forecast

The following are illustrative starting assumptions for a spreadsheet, not Alphabet guidance or a forecast reported by the company. Replace them with your own documented estimates and calculate the resulting UFCF, enterprise value and per-share value.

Operating margin Flat or modestly lower during heavy infrastructure investment Recovers as utilization and mix improve Expands faster through operating leverage and favorable mix
Capital expenditure Remains high relative to revenue with slower payback Rises near term, then normalizes as capacity catches up High initially but produces faster revenue and cash returns

Run each case through the same formulas and share-count policy. Do not change the cash-flow definition between cases. Add a fourth stress case if a specific risk—such as prolonged capacity under-utilization, a sharp advertising slowdown or materially higher spending—could invalidate the base assumptions.

Read discount-rate and terminal-growth sensitivity

Before inserting your forecast cash flow, you can see how strongly the terminal calculation reacts to the two key assumptions. The table shows the terminal-value factor applied to next year’s UFCF, 1 ÷ (WACC − g); it is not an Alphabet price target.

WACC 1% terminal growth 2% terminal growth 3% terminal growth
8% 14.3× 16.7× 20.0×
9% 12.5× 14.3× 16.7×
10% 11.1× 12.5× 14.3×
11% 10.0× 11.1× 12.5×

Build a second sensitivity table after forecasting UFCF: place WACC across the columns and terminal growth down the rows, then calculate value per share in each cell. Include at least the conservative-to-optimistic range and identify combinations that are economically implausible, such as terminal growth approaching WACC.

Bridge enterprise value to the correct share value

  1. Sum the present value of each explicit-year UFCF and the discounted terminal value.
  2. Add cash and cash equivalents and any non-operating assets that were excluded from UFCF.
  3. Subtract debt and other senior claims. Apply the same treatment to lease obligations, pension deficits, preferred interests or minority interests if they are material and relevant to your model.
  4. Divide by a diluted share count that matches the valuation date. Include in-the-money options, restricted awards or other potentially dilutive securities according to the filing and your stated method.
  5. Allocate the resulting value to the Alphabet share class you are analyzing and compare it with that class’s own quote.

Alphabet’s Class A, Class B and Class C shares have different voting arrangements. A model may assume equal economic interests for a per-share calculation, but that is an assumption to disclose, not a reason to substitute one class’s market quote for another’s. If the classes trade at different prices, explain the difference and use the quote for the class an investor actually owns.

Implement the model in a spreadsheet

  1. Create columns for historical 2025, the latest 2026 year-to-date information, and each forecast year. Label every value with its period.
  2. Build separate revenue-driver rows, then calculate total revenue and year-over-year growth.
  3. Forecast operating expenses, EBIT, cash taxes, depreciation, capital expenditure, working-capital investment and other stated adjustments.
  4. Calculate UFCF and check that the sign and units are consistent across all years.
  5. Enter WACC, terminal growth and the timing convention in dedicated input cells. Discount each annual UFCF and terminal value back to the valuation date.
  6. Build the enterprise-to-equity bridge using balance-sheet values at the same valuation date.
  7. Use a diluted share count and calculate value per share for each scenario.
  8. Add data tables for WACC, terminal growth, capex intensity, margin and share-count changes. Record which assumptions drive the largest change in value.

A spreadsheet is preferable to a single-number calculator when you need to audit formulas, switch scenarios and see whether terminal value or capex assumptions dominate the result. A calculator is optional; the method and disclosed assumptions matter more than the tool.

Compare intrinsic value with a dated market quote

The available filings do not provide a market quote verified for this valuation date. Before publishing or making an investment decision, retrieve a contemporaneous quote for the selected Alphabet share class, record the trading date, time and whether the market was open, and identify whether the price is adjusted for any corporate action. Do not label an undated number “current.”

For each scenario, calculate:

Margin of safety = (DCF value per share − observed market price) ÷ DCF value per share

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A positive difference does not guarantee a return. The quote incorporates information that may not be in your forecast, and the market can remain above or below an estimated intrinsic value for long periods. Present the comparison as “the model’s value under these assumptions versus the price observed at this timestamp,” not as a prediction.

Common DCF errors and fixes

  • Annualizing six-month capex: The $80.6 billion figure covers only the six months ended June 30, 2026. Build a full-year estimate rather than doubling it automatically.
  • Mixing cash-flow definitions: UFCF requires an enterprise discount rate. If you use cash flow after interest, use an equity valuation approach and do not subtract debt twice.
  • Ignoring the investment cycle: Link capex to depreciation, capacity utilization, revenue and eventual cash returns; do not assume instant productivity.
  • Using basic shares: Point-in-time Class A, B and C counts are not automatically diluted shares. Include potential dilution and modeled repurchases consistently.
  • Hiding value in the terminal year: Report terminal value as a percentage of total value and extend the forecast if near-term economics have not reached a steady state.
  • Changing assumptions to fit the quote: Set the operating case first, then compare with the market. Do not lower WACC or raise terminal growth solely to create upside.
  • Double counting non-operating assets: Exclude investments from UFCF if you add them in the bridge, and keep leases and acquisitions consistent on both sides.
  • Treating management commentary as a forecast: Use the Q2 2026 earnings discussion to understand demand and investment, but convert it into your own explicit, testable assumptions.

What makes the result defensible

A defensible Alphabet DCF shows the historical period and as-of date, the revenue and margin build, cash taxes and working capital, capex and depreciation, discount-rate construction, terminal method, enterprise-to-equity bridge, diluted share count, and scenario sensitivity. It also states which economic interests are assigned to each share class and compares the output with a quote that has a date and time. If changing one reasonable assumption moves the result dramatically, report that uncertainty instead of presenting a false point estimate.
