TradingView Paper Trading is a virtual-money simulator for rehearsing entries, exits, position sizing, stops, take-profits and trade management while current markets are moving. In Supercharts, open Trade → Paper Trading → Connect, then configure the simulator with the same account size, instruments, leverage assumptions and risk limits you expect to use later. Combine live simulation with Bar Replay and Strategy Report, keep a detailed journal, and move to a very small live position only when your process—not a lucky run of profits—is repeatable.
What TradingView Paper Trading is—and what it is not
Paper Trading is a simulated account funded with virtual money. TradingView describes it as practice with no deposits and no real money involved, while its system tracks simulated orders and positions in real time. You can use the platform’s charts, indicators, drawing tools and analytical features while testing execution decisions.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It is not a funded brokerage account. TradingView does not provide real margin trading or brokerage services through this simulator; it models selected broker mechanics so you can refine a strategy without putting capital at risk. A profitable paper record is evidence that your rules and execution process deserve further examination, not proof that a live account will make money.
- Virtual capital: losses reduce simulated equity rather than your bank balance.
- Live-market practice: you can place and manage simulated orders while market updates arrive.
- Execution rehearsal: the order ticket, chart trading and depth of market let you practise the same sequence of decisions you intend to make later.
- Important boundary: routing, fills, spreads, slippage, commissions, borrow availability, margin calls, halts and emotional pressure can differ materially in a live account.
Activate Paper Trading in Supercharts
TradingView’s stated activation path is short:
- Open Supercharts.
- Click Trade in the upper-right corner.
- Select Paper Trading.
- Click Connect.
TradingView presents Paper Trading as available globally. After connecting, check that the simulated account is the active trading connection before submitting an order. The account should show virtual cash, open positions and working orders rather than a live brokerage connection.

Make the simulated account resemble the account you may actually use
The most common way to make paper results meaningless is to practise with assumptions you could never tolerate in real life. Before entering a trade, decide what the eventual account is supposed to look like and reproduce those constraints in the simulator.
Set a credible starting balance
Use a balance close to the amount you would genuinely allocate, not an artificially large figure that makes every position appear affordable. A large virtual balance can hide the effect of losing streaks, minimum order sizes and concentration. If your intended live account is small, the practice account should force the same trade-selection and sizing decisions.
Use the same markets and contract specifications
Practise the instruments you understand and may later trade. Symbol availability, tick size, contract value, trading hours and settlement rules affect how an order behaves. Do not infer that a result in one asset class transfers automatically to another.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Treat leverage and margin as deliberate inputs
For leveraged products, read the margin shown in the order ticket and set assumptions deliberately. TradingView’s current help documentation gives a 5% margin requirement for E-mini S&P 500 futures as an example corresponding to 20x default simulated leverage. That is a platform example, not a promise that a live account will offer the same terms. Higher leverage increases exposure and can turn a small market move into a large percentage change in account equity.
Write risk limits before you start
Define a maximum loss for one trade, a maximum number of simultaneous positions and a point at which you stop trading for the session or week. Size the position from the predefined loss limit and the distance to the invalidation stop; do not choose a quantity first and then move the stop to justify it. Keep the limits fixed while evaluating a strategy so the results remain interpretable.
Place and manage your first simulated trade
Paper Trading gives you three complementary ways to practise: the order ticket, chart trading and depth of market (DOM). Use one written setup at a time and record the decision before clicking the simulated order button.

Prepare the trade plan
- Instrument and timeframe.
- Why the setup qualifies under your written rules.
- Planned entry and the price that invalidates the idea.
- Stop-loss distance and maximum dollar risk.
- Profit target or exit condition.
- Position quantity and any leverage or margin assumption.
- Conditions that would make you cancel the order before it fills.
Use the order ticket
Open the order ticket from the trading panel and select Buy or Sell. Choose the order type, enter quantity and price where required, and add a stop loss and take profit when the setup calls for them. Market, limit and stop orders behave differently: a market order prioritises execution, a limit order specifies the worst acceptable price, and a stop order activates after its trigger condition. Practise selecting the type intentionally rather than defaulting to whichever ticket state was left from the previous trade.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Review the displayed quantity, estimated margin and protective levels before submitting. After submission, verify whether the order is working, partially filled or filled, and confirm that the stop and target are attached as intended.
Practise directly on the chart
Chart trading lets you place orders, drag entry and exit levels, modify them and close positions visually. This is useful for rehearsing a fast but controlled routine: place the entry, attach protection, verify the price levels, then leave the trade alone unless a written rule authorises a change. Dragging a stop because the market moved against you is not a strategy test; record it as a rule violation.
Read the depth of market
The DOM displays bid and ask levels so you can practise reading available price levels and placing orders around them. It can make the distinction between a marketable order and a resting limit order more tangible, but a simulated DOM does not guarantee that a live market will provide the same liquidity or fill sequence.
Test stops, take-profits and position management
A complete test includes what happens after entry, not only whether the direction was correct. For every simulated trade, decide in advance:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Where the stop is placed and what event makes the original idea invalid.
- Whether the stop remains fixed, moves only after a defined milestone, or trails by a written rule.
- Whether the target is a single price, multiple partial exits or a condition such as a trend break.
- What you do if price reaches the target before the stop, gaps through a level, or remains sideways.
- How you will close the position if an order is rejected, cancelled or left working unintentionally.
Run enough examples to encounter wins, losses, quick reversals and trades that never trigger. A strategy that looks good only when every stop and target fills at an ideal price has not been tested robustly.

Give futures and leveraged products their own practice plan
Futures require more than choosing a direction. Include contract size, simulated margin, leverage, trading hours and the contract’s expiration and settlement mechanics in your checklist. TradingView’s futures guidance notes that expiration and settlement can affect final results, so learn what happens to an open simulated position as the contract approaches its end rather than assuming it behaves like an indefinitely tradable spot instrument.
Leverage magnifies both gains and losses. A margin percentage is not the amount you can safely lose; it is an exposure requirement in the model. Test a losing sequence at the leverage you intend to use and observe how quickly available equity and margin capacity change. If the simulated account permits a position that would violate your planned live risk limit, the position is too large for your process even if the platform accepts it.
Use three test modes in the right order
Historical analysis, replay and live simulation answer different questions. Use each for the question it can actually answer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Method | Data and timing | What it tests well | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strategy Report | Historical data; automated or rule-based backtest results | Whether a defined idea has evidence across many historical trades; net profit, profit factor, win rate, drawdown, run-up, Sharpe ratio, Sortino ratio and individual trade records | That future markets will repeat the historical sample or that you can follow the rules under pressure |
| Bar Replay | Historical candles revealed progressively | Discretionary decision-making without seeing later candles; recognition, entry, stop and target practice | Live spreads, current liquidity, real-time alerts or the emotional stakes of actual money |
| Paper Trading | Current market updates with simulated orders and positions | Order entry, chart and DOM workflow, alerts, exits, position management and record-keeping | Broker routing, guaranteed fills, live fees, borrow access, margin calls or your reaction to financial loss |
Start with a backtest when the rules are objective
Use Strategy Report to see whether the idea has a meaningful history rather than judging it from a handful of attractive examples. Inspect drawdown and the individual trade list, not only net profit. A high win rate can coexist with damaging losses, and a profitable total can conceal a drawdown you would not tolerate.
Use Bar Replay for discretionary choices
Move through historical candles one at a time or in controlled increments. Make the entry decision before revealing the next section of data, place the simulated stop and target, and record whether you followed the plan. Replay is especially useful for finding rules that sound precise on paper but are ambiguous when a candle is forming.
Finish with live Paper Trading
Run the same setup under current updates. Test alerts, order timing, cancellations, protective orders and position management. This stage exposes operational mistakes that a backtest cannot, while avoiding the financial consequences of a live account.

Keep a journal that can falsify your process
A journal is more useful when it records decisions before outcomes are known. For each trade, save:
Recommended Free Tools
- Date, time, instrument, timeframe and market session.
- Screenshot or chart description showing the setup before entry.
- Entry, stop, target, quantity, simulated margin and intended risk.
- Order type, fill status, modifications, cancellations and exit.
- Slippage assumption and any difference between the planned and simulated fill.
- Rule violations, hesitation, impulsive changes and the reason for each action.
- Result in both price units and account-risk units, plus a brief lesson.
Review the journal on a fixed schedule. Separate a losing trade that followed the rules from a losing trade caused by poor execution; they require different remedies. Likewise, do not label a profitable rule violation as evidence that the violation works.
Save history before resetting the account
TradingView warns that resetting the Paper Trading account deletes transaction history, active orders and open positions. Export or otherwise save the records you need for analysis before using a reset. Reset only when you have preserved the old results and have a clear reason to establish a new test period, such as changing the account assumptions or starting a separately documented strategy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How realistic is the simulator?
Paper Trading is realistic enough to rehearse platform operation and to evaluate whether you can follow a defined process during live market updates. It is not a full reproduction of a brokerage account. Treat each area separately:
| Area | What the simulation helps you learn | Live difference to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Order workflow | Choosing market, limit and stop orders; attaching exits; modifying and closing positions | A broker may route orders differently, reject them, queue them or fill only part of the quantity |
| Price execution | How your rules respond to displayed prices and simulated fills | Spread, latency, slippage and liquidity can change the actual fill, especially during fast moves |
| Costs | Whether the strategy remains coherent before transaction costs | Live commissions, exchange charges, financing, borrow costs and other fees can reduce returns |
| Leverage and margin | How exposure and the displayed margin requirement change with position size | Live margin rules, liquidation policies and permitted leverage depend on the provider, product and jurisdiction |
| Market access | Practice with the symbols and sessions available in the simulator | A live account may lack a symbol, require approval, restrict shorting or have different trading hours |
| Psychology | Routine, patience and adherence to written rules | Virtual losses do not create the same emotional response as losing personal money |
Because of these differences, use a paper result to identify operational and strategic weaknesses. Do not present it as a forecast of future profitability or as evidence that a broker will deliver identical fills.
How long should you paper trade?
There is no universal number of days or trades that guarantees readiness. A calendar target can encourage a trader to go live after a short winning streak or to postpone indefinitely without measuring anything. Use a process-based standard instead.

Readiness checklist
- You can explain the strategy’s entry, invalidation and exit rules without improvising.
- You have tested the rules across a sufficiently broad historical sample for the strategy’s timeframe, and you have inspected the full trade record and drawdown rather than one headline metric.
- You have used Bar Replay to make decisions without seeing the future.
- You can place, modify, cancel and close orders correctly in live Paper Trading.
- Position size comes from a predefined risk limit, not from the maximum quantity the ticket permits.
- You have practised losing streaks, missed trades, unfilled limits and trades that reach neither stop nor target.
- Your journal shows consistent rule-following and identifies violations separately from strategy outcomes.
- You understand the instrument’s leverage, margin, trading hours and, for futures, expiration and settlement.
- You have a written response to operational failures, such as an order that remains working or a protective order that is missing.
When these conditions are met, begin with the smallest real position that makes the process meaningful. Treat the first live period as another validation stage, not as permission to increase size immediately. Keep the paper journal and live journal comparable so you can see which differences come from execution and which come from emotion.
Common mistakes and practical fixes
Using an oversized virtual balance
Symptom: every setup appears affordable and drawdowns feel trivial. Fix: reset the assumptions to the amount you could realistically allocate and apply the same concentration and loss limits.
Changing rules after seeing the outcome
Symptom: stops and targets move only after price moves against the position. Fix: write the invalidation and management rules before entry, then log every authorised change and every violation.
Testing only winning examples
Symptom: screenshots show ideal trends but no failed breakouts, gaps or unfilled orders. Fix: use sequential replay and keep every eligible trade, including the unattractive ones.
Confusing margin with acceptable risk
Symptom: the ticket allows a position, so the trader assumes it is safe. Fix: calculate risk to the stop independently of the displayed margin and reduce quantity until the loss limit is respected.
Resetting before preserving records
Symptom: the account is cleared and the evidence needed to review performance disappears. Fix: save the journal and trade history first; remember that a reset removes history, active orders and open positions.
Assuming paper fills equal live fills
Symptom: a strategy depends on precise fills during fast markets or on costs that were never modelled. Fix: record conservative slippage and cost assumptions, and regard the first live trades as an execution test at minimal size.

- Define the rules: write entry, invalidation, exits, position-sizing formula and risk limits.
- Measure the historical idea: use Strategy Report to inspect performance metrics, drawdown and individual trades.
- Practise decisions: use Bar Replay without revealing future candles before each decision.
- Configure the account: match the intended balance, instruments, leverage assumptions, trading hours and risk caps.
- Execute live simulation: use the order ticket, chart trading and DOM; verify every working order and protective exit.
- Journal and review: record planned versus actual execution, rule adherence, simulated costs and emotional or operational errors.
- Validate readiness: look for repeatable process quality across all three test modes rather than a particular number of profitable trades.
- Scale cautiously: start with the smallest meaningful live position, compare live execution with the paper assumptions and increase exposure only after the process remains controlled.
Used this way, Paper Trading is not a promise of profit. It is a controlled rehearsal that can expose unclear rules, excessive leverage, weak record-keeping and order-entry mistakes before those errors involve real capital.
