How to Use Semrush One for SEO Rankings, AI Visibility, and Competitor Research

The most useful way to use Semrush One is as a research-and-monitoring workspace, not as proof that a page will rank or that an AI system will recommend your brand. Start by fixing your market, audience, site and competitors. Then build separate lists of conventional SEO keywords and natural-language AI prompts, compare search rankings with AI mentions and citations, investigate the underlying pages, make one documented improvement at a time, and monitor the same measures afterward.

That distinction matters because a strong Google position does not establish that a brand appears in AI answers, and an AI visibility score does not establish additional traffic or sales. Semrush describes the workflow and measurements; the outcomes still depend on your content, site, market and the behavior of each search or AI system.

What Semrush One includes—and what it cannot prove

A single subscription spanning two discovery systems

Semrush presents Semrush One as a paid subscription that combines traditional SEO capabilities with AI-visibility work. Its plan page lists keyword research and optimization, competitor insights, keyword-position tracking, and monitoring of AI brands and prompts. The product is therefore useful for organizing questions, comparing competitors and watching changes from one workspace rather than treating SEO and AI discovery as the same channel. See the current Semrush One plan details and feature list for the vendor’s current description.

A measurement tool, not a ranking guarantee

Semrush’s AI Visibility materials describe measurements of brand presence in AI-generated responses, prompts that trigger mentions, competitor visibility, sentiment, citations and whether AI crawlers can access site content. Those are vendor-described capabilities. The available documentation does not independently verify that every live AI experience is covered, that each measurement is accurate in every market or language, or that using the product causes higher rankings, more citations, more traffic or recommendations. Treat every metric as evidence to investigate, not as an outcome promised by the software. The AI Visibility overview explains the feature set.

SEO keywords and AI prompts answer different questions

Keep the two research streams separate until you deliberately compare them. A keyword report describes search demand and conventional results; a prompt report describes how selected natural-language questions produce AI responses. They can inform one another, but one is not a substitute for the other.

Research item Question it answers What to verify yourself
Keyword research Which words or phrases do people use in conventional search, and how competitive are they? Search intent, location, seasonality and whether the result would be valuable to your audience.
Keyword-position tracking Where does a specified site appear for tracked searches over time? The device, location, search features and date used for the comparison.
Prompt research and tracking Which natural-language questions are being monitored, and when is a brand mentioned? The exact prompt, AI product or experience, market, answer date and wording of the response.
AI mentions and citations Does an AI answer mention the brand, and which pages does it cite? Whether the cited page is actually relevant, current and accessible to a reader.
Technical or crawler audit Can the monitored site’s content be reached by the crawlers or systems covered by the audit? Robots rules, access controls, rendering and whether the audit’s coverage matches your target systems.

Comparing these columns prevents a common error: assuming that a first-page result should automatically appear in an AI answer, or that an AI mention proves conventional search success.

Set a comparison scope before opening reports

  1. Choose the site and market. Select the exact domain, country or region, language, device and audience you intend to serve. Keep those settings consistent when you compare your site with competitors.
  2. Define the customer and decision. Write down whether the project is intended to generate awareness, qualified visits, leads, subscriptions or sales. A visibility change has different value for each objective.
  3. Select a small competitor set. Use businesses competing for the same audience and need, not simply the largest domains in a category. Semrush’s competitor report supports comparison with up to four competitor domains, according to its documentation.
  4. Record a baseline date. Save the initial rankings, prompts, AI answers, cited URLs and important technical findings. Without a dated baseline, later movement is easy to misinterpret.

Build two research lists

List one: conventional SEO keywords

Group keywords by the job a searcher is trying to complete: learning, comparing options, solving a problem or taking an action. Include the geography and audience in your notes when they change the result. For each group, record the page that currently serves the intent, its position, the competing pages and the content or technical gap you can plausibly address. Keyword research is most useful when it leads to a page decision rather than a large unprioritized export.

List two: customer-language prompts

Write the questions a customer would actually ask an AI assistant, including comparisons, constraints, use cases and follow-up questions. A prompt such as “Which option fits a small team with a limited budget?” tests a different information need from a short product keyword. Keep the exact wording, because changing one qualification can change the answer, mentions and citations. Semrush describes prompt research and prompt tracking as separate capabilities; do not merge prompt counts with keyword counts.

Map competitors to both lists

For each competitor, note the pages that rank for your important keywords and the prompts in which the competitor is mentioned or cited. This produces a useful comparison without assuming that a rival’s presence means its advice is correct or its page is better. The goal is to identify questions worth inspecting.

A practical Semrush One workflow

  1. Create the project and scope. Add the correct domain, market and tracking settings. Confirm that the number of sites, keywords and prompts fits the account you intend to use.
  2. Research and cluster keywords. Find terms related to the customer’s problem, group them by intent and select a manageable tracking set. Mark which terms deserve a new page, an update or no action.
  3. Track conventional positions. Review movement for the same location and device over time. Annotate major site releases, migrations and content changes so a graph has context.
  4. Research and track prompts. Add the natural-language questions from your customer list. Keep prompts stable long enough to see a pattern, while recording the date and AI experience for each observation.
  5. Compare AI visibility. Review mentions, cited pages, competitor appearances and any sentiment or topic views offered in your plan. A reported score is a monitoring signal, not a universal share-of-answer metric.
  6. Open the competitor report. Use the report’s topic or prompt gaps to find places where a competitor appears and your brand does not. The report can compare your brand with up to four competitor domains, but the gap is only a lead.
  7. Inspect the underlying evidence. Read the actual AI response, open every cited page, check the prompt’s wording and verify that the result is relevant to your market. A citation to an outdated or tangential page should not become an automatic content brief.
  8. Choose one change. Prioritize a useful content improvement or a technical accessibility fix that addresses the verified gap. Document the prompt or keyword, the page changed, the reason and the date.
  9. Recheck on the same basis. Monitor the selected keywords and prompts after the change. Compare like with like, and avoid attributing movement to Semrush itself without other evidence such as analytics, server logs or conversion data.

Understand plan capacity before you pay

Published limits change by tier, billing period and region. On the plan page returned for this article, Semrush listed the following monitoring capacities; verify the live page before purchase because these are volatile commercial details.

Published tier Monitored websites Daily tracked keywords AI brand-performance domains Daily tracked prompts
Starter 5 500 1 50
Pro+ 15 1,500 Not stated in the cited plan excerpt 100
Advanced 40 5,000 Not stated in the cited plan excerpt 200

The table is a snapshot of the published page, not a permanent price sheet. Check the current Semrush One pricing page for the billing cadence, user seats, included features, regional currency, overage rules and any revised quotas. Do not choose a tier solely because its keyword allowance is larger: a small team may be constrained by prompt or website limits instead.

How to interpret AI visibility evidence

Visibility scores

Use a score to compare the same tracked set over time or against named competitors. It is not a census of every AI answer on the internet. Changes can reflect a different prompt mix, coverage, model behavior or answer date as well as a change in your content.

Mentions and citations

A mention tells you that a response referred to a brand; a citation points to a source page. Read the surrounding answer. A brand can be named with a negative qualification, while a cited page can be technically accessible but unhelpful. Save the exact response and URL before deciding what to edit.

Topic and prompt gaps

A gap means the monitored comparison found a difference for the selected prompts or topics. It does not prove that a competitor has superior expertise or that publishing a similar page will earn a mention. Check the searcher’s intent, factual accuracy, freshness and evidence on both sides.

Sentiment and crawler access

Sentiment labels are classifications, not customer surveys. Crawler-access findings identify an access condition in the systems covered by the audit; they do not establish that every AI crawler or model can retrieve your site. Confirm robots directives, authentication, rendering and important page responses with your technical team.

Turn findings into responsible SEO and content work

When the keyword gap is real

Improve the page that best matches the intent, or create a new page when no suitable URL exists. Answer the question directly, state assumptions such as location or eligibility, cite authoritative evidence where appropriate and make the next action clear. Do not create thin pages solely to capture a reported term.

When the prompt gap is real

Read the competitor’s cited material and identify the information your audience lacks: a definition, comparison criterion, calculation, limitation or practical example. Add original, verifiable material to the page that can serve that need. Avoid copying a competitor’s wording or manufacturing claims to obtain a mention.

When access is the problem

Check whether important pages return successful responses, render without blocked resources and are available to unauthenticated crawlers where intended. Review robots and security changes with the person responsible for the site. Fix access first; otherwise content changes may be invisible to the systems you are measuring.

Measure outcomes without fooling yourself

  1. Keep the unit of analysis stable. Compare the same market, device, keyword set and prompt set at each checkpoint.
  2. Separate visibility from business results. Track impressions, visits, engaged sessions, leads or sales in your analytics system rather than treating an AI score as revenue.
  3. Annotate interventions. Record publication dates, technical releases, redirects, promotional campaigns and major algorithm or model changes that could affect the result.
  4. Allow for volatility. Search rankings and AI responses fluctuate. Look for a sustained pattern across repeated observations instead of reacting to one answer.
  5. Test one material change at a time when practical. This will not create a perfect experiment, but it makes attribution more credible than changing an entire site and claiming the tool caused the result.

Common mistakes and fixes

Mistake Why it misleads Better practice
Treating a keyword rank as AI visibility The channels use different retrieval and answer processes. Track keywords and prompts separately, then compare only as context.
Publishing from a gap report without reading the answer The gap may be caused by an irrelevant prompt, stale citation or market mismatch. Open the response and cited pages before assigning work.
Comparing different markets Language, location and audience can change both search and AI results. Use identical scope settings for every competitor.
Overbuying capacity Unused keyword allowances do not create value, while prompt or website limits may still bind. Estimate the sites, keywords, prompts and users you will actively review each month.
Claiming causation from a graph Many external factors move rankings and AI answers. Annotate changes and corroborate with analytics and technical evidence.
Assuming one AI system represents all AI search Coverage and model behavior differ. State exactly which monitored experience and date produced the observation.

A budget-minded way to decide whether Semrush One fits

For a small publisher or business, start with the work you can actually review. Count the domains, tracked keywords, prompts and team members needed for the next reporting cycle, then compare those requirements with the current tier limits. Estimate the value of a successful improvement using your own conversion data, not a vendor promise. A simple break-even check is: required incremental gross profit = subscription cost plus the value of staff time and implementation work. If you cannot explain which decisions the reports will change, a larger quota is unlikely to solve the problem.

Revisit the calculation when pricing, quotas, market coverage or your research scope changes. Semrush’s product and pricing pages are the authoritative places to confirm those volatile details: Semrush One plans, AI Visibility pricing and AI Visibility capabilities.

Bottom line for an SEO and AI research workflow

Use Semrush One to keep two evidence streams organized: conventional rankings and AI prompt-level visibility. Define a comparable scope, validate every competitor gap against the real response and citation, make a focused change, and measure business outcomes separately. The software can make that process more systematic; it cannot guarantee rankings, citations, traffic or recommendations.
