Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse price alerts to prompt a prewritten risk action, and use funding-rate data to measure the recurring cost and crowding risk of an ETH perpetual position. Neither tool is a substitute for a stop order, adequate collateral, or a venue’s liquidation rules: an alert may arrive late or not at all, while liquidation can occur when the mark price reaches the venue’s threshold or when margin requirements change.
A workable process is to document the position before entry, set alerts around invalidation, liquidation buffer and profit decisions, then recalculate funding and liquidation distance whenever ETH, the rate, collateral or exchange rules change.

What price alerts and funding rates can—and cannot—do
A leveraged Ethereum position has two separate monitoring problems. The first is market movement: ETH can move far enough against the position to consume available margin. The second is carrying cost: a perpetual contract’s funding payment transfers value between longs and shorts at recurring intervals.
- Price alerts are prompts. They can tell you that ETH, the mark price or another reference has reached a level, but they do not guarantee an order, fill or even delivery of the notification.
- Funding is a cash flow. It is normally calculated from position notional and the venue’s rate and interval. Positive funding generally means longs pay shorts; negative funding generally means shorts pay longs, subject to the contract’s rules.
- Leverage magnifies equity changes. A small percentage move in ETH can produce a much larger percentage change in the collateral supporting the position.
- Liquidation is venue-specific. Mark-price methodology, maintenance margin, margin tiers, collateral haircuts, funding treatment and liquidation formulas differ and may change.
The CFTC describes the central risk plainly: “This creates ‘leverage,’ and leverage amplifies the underlying risk, making a change in the cash price even more significant.”

Write the position plan before opening the trade
Do not start by choosing alert levels. Start by recording the assumptions that make those levels meaningful. Keep a copy outside the exchange interface so a platform outage or account lock does not erase the plan.
Minimum position record
- Instrument: the exact ETH perpetual or futures contract, settlement currency and venue.
- Direction and entry: long or short, average entry price and entry time.
- Notional value: the contract exposure, not merely the collateral deposited.
- Leverage and margin mode: isolated or cross, initial margin and any venue-specific tier.
- Collateral: asset, quantity, valuation method and whether other positions share it.
- Liquidation price or range: the venue’s displayed estimate, together with the assumptions behind it.
- Maintenance-margin rule: the applicable rate or tier and what happens when notional crosses a threshold.
- Invalidation level: the price at which the trade thesis is wrong, before liquidation is threatened.
- Planned holding time: an intraday window, overnight period or open-ended hold with review times.
- Funding convention: interval, sign convention, cap or floor, and whether the displayed rate is estimated or settled.
There is no universally safe leverage multiple, stop distance or liquidation buffer. Those choices depend on collateral, volatility, venue rules and your risk tolerance; verify the current contract documentation and account settings before trading.
Separate three prices
Record the last-traded price, index price and mark price when the venue provides all three. A liquidation engine commonly uses a mark price rather than the most recent trade, so an alert based only on the chart’s last price may not match the liquidation calculation. If the platform does not explain the reference used by an alert, treat that uncertainty as a risk that requires a larger margin buffer or a different monitoring method.

Every alert should have one written action. “Watch ETH” is not an action; “close 50% if the mark price reaches the invalidation level” is.
| Alert purpose | What to trigger on | Precommitted action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thesis invalidation | Price or mark price at the level that disproves the trade | Reduce or close the position according to the plan | An alert is not an executable stop and may be delayed. |
| Liquidation-buffer warning | A level comfortably before the displayed liquidation price, or a specified percentage of remaining margin | Reduce exposure, add collateral only if the plan permits it, or close | Liquidation distance can change without a price move when margin requirements change. |
| Profit-taking | One or more target prices or a trailing condition | Take the planned partial or full profit; do not improvise leverage | Fast markets can skip the alert level and fill at a worse price. |
| Volatility or rapid-move | A percentage move, range expansion or platform volatility condition | Recheck mark price, margin, funding and order status | The platform may not support the condition or may calculate it differently than expected. |
| Funding review | A funding rate above or below your carrying-cost limit | Recalculate expected cost and decide whether to reduce, hedge or exit | This is a review prompt, not a prediction that price will reverse. |
Set levels with liquidation distance in mind
Place the invalidation alert before the liquidation-buffer alert, and both before the liquidation estimate. The exact spacing is not universal. A highly volatile ETH market can traverse several levels during one move, so the plan should specify whether to close immediately, reduce in stages or use a hedge. A price alert cannot prevent liquidation if the market gaps through your action level, the notification is missed, or the venue liquidates before you can submit an order.
Use multiple delivery channels
Prefer a combination of exchange-native push notifications, email and a second device when available. A webhook or automation can be useful only if the venue documents how it authenticates, retries and handles partial fills. Test each channel with a harmless alert, confirm the time zone, and check whether the alert references last price, index price or mark price. Binance documents real-time and historical funding-rate views and a funding-fee trigger notification, while warning that notification delivery is not guaranteed.

Write an action card
Store a compact note with each alert:
Trigger: ETH mark price at [level shown in the platform]
Action: reduce position by [planned fraction] or close
Order type: [specified type], maximum slippage [planned limit]
After action: verify fill, remaining notional, margin and liquidation estimate
Do not: increase leverage or add collateral outside the written plan
Template variables belong in the note only after you replace them with actual values. Do not rely on memory during a rapid move.
Understand what the funding rate means
A perpetual contract has no scheduled expiry, so venues use periodic funding transfers to help keep its price aligned with the underlying market. The transfer is generally between long and short position holders; it is not a fee that always goes to the exchange.
Read the sign correctly
- Positive rate: long holders generally pay short holders.
- Negative rate: short holders generally pay long holders.
Coinbase’s perpetual-futures documentation states: “When the funding rate is positive, long position holders pay short position holders.” The sign convention, payer, recipient, timing and exceptions remain subject to the specific contract rules.
Confirm the interval and status
A displayed number may be hourly, every four hours, every eight hours or another interval. Confirm whether it is a forecast, an estimated rate for the next settlement or a rate already applied. Also check caps, floors, grace periods, position cut-off times and whether a position must remain open at settlement. Never multiply an eight-hour rate as though it were an annual or daily rate.
Look at persistence, not one print
Compare the current rate with its recent history where the venue provides that data. A rapidly rising positive rate can indicate increasing cost and crowded long positioning; a rapidly falling or negative rate can indicate increasing cost and crowding for shorts. This is a risk-management interpretation, not a guaranteed price signal. Funding can remain positive while ETH rises, or turn negative during a falling market.
Estimate the holding cost
Use this basic estimate for each funding interval:
Funding cost = notional position value × funding rate per interval × number of intervals held.

Use the position’s notional value, not simply the collateral. For a long, a positive result normally represents a payment; for a short, the same sign may represent a receipt under the venue’s convention. Apply the venue’s own formula if it uses mark price, premium components, tier adjustments or a different base.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose an ETH perpetual has a $10,000 notional position, a displayed funding rate of 0.01% per eight-hour interval and a planned 24-hour hold. There are three intervals, so the simple estimate is:
$10,000 × 0.0001 × 3 = $3.
This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a forecast or a recommendation. The actual amount can differ if notional changes with ETH’s mark price, the rate updates, the interval changes, the position is opened after a cut-off, or the venue applies a different calculation. Recalculate whenever the rate or interval changes.

Include costs that funding does not capture
- Opening and closing trading fees.
- Bid-ask spread and expected slippage.
- Conversion or collateral-borrowing charges.
- Partial fills, liquidation fees or insurance-fund charges where applicable.
- Opportunity cost and the effect of funding on available margin.
Keep these items separate from the funding estimate so a low funding rate does not create a false impression that the trade is inexpensive.
Use funding as a risk and sizing input
Funding changes the break-even price. A position that appears profitable on ETH’s movement can lose money after repeated payments, especially when notional is large relative to collateral. Conversely, a trader receiving funding should not treat the receipt as protection against adverse price movement.
Set a carrying-cost limit
Before entry, define the maximum funding amount or rate you are willing to pay for the planned holding period. When the rate exceeds that limit, the funding-review alert should prompt a fresh decision: reduce notional, close, hedge, or accept the cost because the thesis still meets the written rules. Do not automatically add leverage to offset funding.

Distinguish cost from crowding
Persistent positive funding can mean many traders are willing to pay to remain long, which may signal crowded positioning. Persistent negative funding can reflect crowded shorts. Crowding can unwind in either direction; funding alone does not tell you when or how. Combine it with your invalidation level, liquidity conditions and available margin.

Protect the liquidation buffer
Liquidation is an account event, not merely a chart level. The venue compares equity and maintenance requirements using its specified mark price and margin model. When the account falls below the requirement, it may close some or all of the position, often without waiting for your alert response.
Why a price move is not the only threat
Coinbase documents that transitions in margin rates can move an account toward liquidation without a price move. A larger notional tier, a changed maintenance-margin schedule, collateral valuation change or another position using shared cross margin can reduce the buffer while ETH is flat.
Monitor the variables that move the estimate
- Current mark price and index-price components.
- Remaining collateral and unrealized profit or loss.
- Maintenance-margin rate and notional tier.
- Funding debits or credits already applied.
- Other positions and open orders sharing cross margin.
- Collateral transfers, withdrawals or conversions.
- Venue announcements that alter contract specifications or risk limits.
Choose a response hierarchy
- Reduce exposure first if the position is larger than the plan allows or the buffer is shrinking.
- Close the position when the thesis is invalidated or the buffer reaches the written danger level.
- Add collateral only within the plan. Adding funds can postpone liquidation but increases capital at risk and does not repair a wrong thesis.
- Hedge only if the hedge mechanics are understood. A second leveraged position can add fees, funding and liquidation interactions.
- Reassess after any action. Verify fills, remaining notional, maintenance margin and the new liquidation estimate.
A complete monitoring workflow
Before entry
- Read the current contract specification, including funding interval, sign convention, caps, mark-price method and liquidation formula.
- Record entry, notional, leverage, collateral, margin mode, maintenance tier, estimated liquidation price, invalidation and planned hold.
- Calculate a funding estimate for the planned intervals and add trading fees, spread and slippage assumptions.
- Set invalidation, liquidation-buffer, profit-taking and volatility alerts. Assign exactly one action to each.
- Test notification delivery and confirm the alert’s price source and time zone.
While the position is open
- Check mark price and liquidation distance, not only the last-traded ETH chart.
- Record each funding rate, interval and resulting debit or credit.
- Compare current funding with recent history and note whether the rate is persistent or changing quickly.
- Recheck collateral after transfers, funding settlements and fills.
- Follow the action card when an alert fires; do not invent a new rule during a fast market.
After a sharp move or venue change
- Confirm that all alerts are still active and reference the intended price source.
- Recalculate notional, funding cost and liquidation distance.
- Check maintenance-margin tiers, mark-price methodology and collateral eligibility.
- Review open orders, partial fills and any automatic deleveraging or risk-control notices.
- Decide whether the original holding period and risk budget still apply.
Venue and tool comparison checklist
Do not compare platforms solely by the number of indicators or the headline funding rate. Compare the mechanics that determine whether an alert or estimate is useful.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Alert channels | Are push, email, webhook or exchange-native alerts available? Is delivery reliability documented? Can alerts be tested? |
| Execution capability | Does the feature only notify, or can a supported automation submit an order? What happens on partial fills, rejected orders or downtime? |
| Funding display | Is the rate hourly, four-hour, eight-hour or another interval? Is it estimated or settled? Are caps and settlement times published? |
| Funding history | Can you inspect recent rates and prior settlements rather than a single current print? |
| Price reference | Do alerts and liquidation use last, index or mark price, and is the calculation transparent? |
| Margin model | Are maintenance tiers, cross/isolated rules, collateral haircuts and liquidation procedures clear? |
| Eligibility | Is the contract available in your jurisdiction and account type, and what restrictions or contract specifications apply? |
Availability and rules can differ by country, account, product and date. Confirm them in the venue’s current documentation rather than relying on a tutorial or an old screenshot.

Common mistakes and fixes
Using collateral instead of notional
Mistake: multiplying the funding rate by the margin deposit. Fix: use the position’s notional value and the venue’s calculation base.

Treating an alert as a stop order
Mistake: assuming a notification will close the trade. Fix: use a separately configured stop or documented automation when appropriate, and understand that execution can still be delayed, rejected or filled with slippage.
Ignoring the mark price
Mistake: monitoring only the last trade. Fix: identify the mark-price source used for liquidation and place a buffer alert against that reference when possible.
Annualizing the wrong interval
Mistake: reading 0.01% per eight hours as 0.01% per day. Fix: confirm the interval, count the expected settlements and recalculate when it changes.

Mistake: transferring more funds whenever liquidation distance narrows. Fix: decide in advance when additional collateral is allowed, cap the amount and recognize that it increases potential loss.
Relying on one notification path
Mistake: assuming push delivery is guaranteed. Fix: test multiple channels, monitor account status directly and keep alerts active on a second device where feasible.
Assuming funding predicts price
Mistake: going long because funding is negative or short because it is positive. Fix: treat funding as a cost and crowding indicator, then make the directional decision from the documented trading thesis.
Practical review checklist
- Is the contract, jurisdiction and account eligibility confirmed?
- Are entry, notional, leverage, collateral and margin mode recorded?
- Do you know the mark-price method and current maintenance tier?
- Are invalidation, liquidation-buffer and profit alerts active?
- Does every alert have one action and an order or reduction method?
- Is the funding interval and sign convention verified?
- Was funding estimated from notional and the expected number of intervals?
- Were trading fees, spread and slippage considered separately?
- Are notification channels tested, with delivery limitations understood?
- Will you recheck the plan after a sharp ETH move, funding shift, collateral transfer or rule update?
Bottom line for managing an ETH perpetual
Price alerts create discipline by turning predetermined prices into predetermined decisions. Funding-rate data keeps the recurring cost and positioning crowding visible. Together they improve monitoring, but neither removes leverage risk: alerts are not guaranteed execution, funding can change, and liquidation distance can shrink because of margin-rule changes as well as ETH price movement. Keep notional, funding, mark price, maintenance margin and collateral under review, and use the venue’s current contract documentation for every calculation.
