Then make a qualifying purchase early enough for the charge to post under those terms. A card anniversary, account anniversary, issue date, booking date, posting date, and travel date can all be different deadlines, and cancellation rules may prevent a used credit from returning.
Start with the benefit’s actual deadline
“Travel credit” is not one standardized benefit. The date and conditions depend on the card and on the particular credit attached to it. Some credits renew on an account or cardmember anniversary, while an airline-issued balance may expire a set number of months after it was issued. A booking can also require a specific portal, hotel category, airline, passenger, or transaction type.

Sign in to the account that shows the credit and record these details before shopping:
- Expiration or reset date: Note whether it is tied to the calendar year, account-open anniversary, cardmember anniversary, or issue date.
- Eligible purchase: Check whether the credit covers broad travel purchases, only hotels, only flights, or a narrower list of merchants and fare types.
- Booking channel: Determine whether any travel website is acceptable or whether the issuer’s travel portal is mandatory.
- Transaction timing: Read whether the purchase, charge, or posted transaction must occur before the deadline.
- Cancellation treatment: Find out whether a refunded or canceled booking restores the credit and whether restoration is possible after the original deadline.
- Passenger restrictions: For airline-issued balances, verify who may use the credit and which flights qualify.
Do not infer these answers from another card in the same rewards program. Issuers can apply different rules to benefits that look similar.

How travel-credit deadlines are calculated
Cardmember or account anniversary
The Chase Sapphire Reserve’s $300 annual travel credit renews on the account anniversary, according to Chase’s 2026 benefit guidance. That is not necessarily December 31. The Sapphire Preferred $100 annual hotel credit likewise resets each cardmember anniversary; Chase says any unused portion is forfeited when the benefit resets.
An anniversary-based credit can therefore become available and expire on a date unique to your account. Check the anniversary shown in the card’s benefit details rather than relying on a statement-year assumption.
Time from the date of issue
United TravelBank cash described in Chase’s United Explorer card terms expires 12 months after it is issued. A balance created by a particular transaction or promotion may consequently have a different deadline from a balance issued earlier or later.
Booking date, posting date, and travel date
Terms can distinguish between when you reserve a trip, when the merchant submits the charge, when it posts to the account, and when you actually travel. The cited issuer guidance does not establish one universal rule. Follow the wording for your credit and do not assume that a trip occurring after the deadline is acceptable merely because it was booked before it, or that a booking made before the deadline qualifies if the charge posts afterward.
What the main examples show
| Benefit | Amount and deadline basis | Qualifying purchase and channel | Posting or cancellation detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chase Sapphire Reserve travel credit | $300 annual credit; renews on the account anniversary, according to Chase’s 2026 guidance | Qualifying travel purchases; Chase says a particular travel booking site is not required | Statement credit can take one to two billing cycles; Chase says the credit can be spread across purchases |
| Chase Sapphire Preferred hotel credit | $100 annual hotel credit; resets each cardmember anniversary | Eligible hotel accommodation purchased through Chase Travel | Posting may take up to four weeks; unused credit is forfeited at reset |
| Capital One Venture X annual travel credit | Annual credit; use the expiration or renewal date shown in the current Venture X terms | Purchases through Capital One Travel; Capital One says the credit can be applied whole or in part | An expired credit used on a booking canceled after the expiration date is not restored, according to Capital One; a universal posting period is not stated in the cited guidance |
| United TravelBank cash | Expires 12 months after issue under the United Explorer terms cited by Chase | Airline-controlled TravelBank rules apply | Check the balance’s individual issue date and the airline’s restrictions before booking or changing travel |
These are issuer-stated benefit amounts and conditions, not independent statistics. They illustrate variation among U.S. products; they are not a complete list of cards or a guarantee that a later version of a benefit will retain the same terms.
A step-by-step process that prevents forfeiture
1. Locate the credit and its terms
- Sign in to the card issuer’s website or app.
- Open the card’s rewards, benefits, or travel section.
- Record the displayed balance, deadline or reset date, qualifying categories, booking channel, and cancellation language.
- If the credit is airline-issued, open the airline wallet or TravelBank record and note the issue date for each balance.
If the account does not display a date, consult the current benefit terms associated with that exact card and product version. Do not use a date from a general rewards page if the card’s terms provide a more specific rule.
2. Confirm that the account and purchase qualify
- Make sure the card remains open and eligible under the benefit terms.
- Match the merchant and transaction category to the credit’s definition of travel or hotel accommodation.
- For portal-restricted benefits, begin the reservation inside the required issuer portal and complete payment there.
- For an airline balance, verify the permitted flights, fare restrictions, and passenger name requirements before selecting an itinerary.
3. Choose a purchase that fits the remaining balance
A broad credit such as the Sapphire Reserve benefit may be consumed by one qualifying charge or divided among several purchases. A portal-specific hotel credit may be used only for the eligible hotel portion of a Chase Travel reservation. For a credit that can be used whole or in part, such as the Venture X credit described by Capital One, check the checkout screen to see how much will be applied and what amount will remain.

4. Complete the transaction before the applicable cutoff
Finish the reservation or purchase early enough for the issuer’s stated timing requirement. The relevant event may be the booking, the charge submission, or the posting date. Keep in mind that a credit may not appear instantly even when the purchase qualifies.
5. Save evidence
Keep the confirmation number, itemized receipt, portal record, and a screenshot or downloaded copy of the benefit terms visible when you booked. These records establish the purchase date, merchant, amount, and channel if the credit does not appear automatically.
6. Monitor the account until the credit arrives
Chase says a Sapphire Reserve statement credit can take one to two billing cycles. For the Sapphire Preferred hotel credit, Chase says posting may take up to four weeks. Wait through the applicable period, then compare the posted amount with the qualifying charge and contact the issuer with your records if the benefit is missing.
Using each type of credit correctly
Chase Sapphire Reserve: broad travel purchases
Chase’s 2026 guide describes a $300 annual credit for qualifying travel purchases that renews on the account anniversary. Chase also states that cardmembers do not need to activate the credit or use a specific travel booking site. That makes the principal decision the merchant and transaction category, not a particular portal.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Because the credit can be spread across purchases, you do not need to force the entire amount into one reservation. Apply separate qualifying charges while tracking the remaining balance. The statement credit may take one to two billing cycles, so a purchase close to the anniversary deserves extra caution: the charge must satisfy the terms even if the reimbursement is posted later.
Chase Sapphire Preferred: hotel-only and portal-required
The Sapphire Preferred benefit is a $100 annual hotel credit for eligible hotel accommodation purchases made through Chase Travel. A hotel reservation made elsewhere does not meet the cited channel requirement, even if the hotel itself would otherwise be a qualifying property.
Chase says the credit resets each cardmember anniversary, unused amounts are forfeited at that reset, and posting may take up to four weeks. Select the hotel and payment path inside Chase Travel, verify that the checkout identifies the charge as eligible, and leave enough time for any required transaction processing before the anniversary.

Capital One Venture X: portal purchase and cancellation exposure
Capital One’s rewards and benefits guidance says the annual Venture X travel credit is applied to purchases through Capital One Travel and can be used in whole or in part. The exact renewal date and any additional eligibility conditions should be read in the current Venture X terms for your account.
Capital One also warns that an expired credit will not be restored when a purchase is canceled after the credit’s expiration date. That is a benefit-specific rule, not a universal rule for every issuer. Before canceling, changing, or rebooking a reservation, determine whether the original credit would return, whether it would return only before expiration, and whether the replacement booking would qualify.
Airline-issued credits and TravelBank balances
Airline-issued credits operate separately from a card’s own annual statement credit. The cited Capital One help guidance says the airline sets the expiration and use rules, credits generally remain tied to the same passenger, and eligible flights may be restricted. The United TravelBank example in Chase’s United Explorer terms expires 12 months after issue.
Read the airline wallet record rather than assuming that a card’s anniversary controls the balance. Check the passenger name, permitted route or fare, expiration date, and whether a change or cancellation creates a new balance with a new deadline.
Plan a purchase when the deadline is close
Build a personal timeline
Write down three dates for each credit: the last day to initiate a qualifying purchase under the terms, the expected posting window, and the date on which the credit resets or expires. The cited Chase examples show why this matters: one credit can take one to two billing cycles to appear, while another can take up to four weeks.

Choose low-risk reservations
If you are booking near expiration, review the cancellation and refund terms before paying. A refundable reservation may reduce the risk of being stuck with unwanted travel, but it does not guarantee that the credit will be restored. For the Venture X example, a cancellation after expiration can permanently eliminate the used credit.

Do not confuse a travel date with a credit date
A trip scheduled months later can be acceptable only if the benefit’s terms permit it. Conversely, a trip departing before expiration may not help if the eligible charge posts after the cutoff. The account’s current terms control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens if you cancel or change the booking?
Cancellation can reverse the original charge while leaving the benefit subject to its original deadline. Capital One expressly states for the described Venture X credit that an expired credit is not restored after cancellation. Other issuers or benefits may handle restoration differently, so a general assumption is unsafe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Before canceling, open the credit’s current terms and search for “cancel,” “refund,” “restore,” or “expiration.”
- Check whether the issuer treats a voluntary cancellation differently from an airline-initiated schedule change.
- Ask whether a replacement booking must be made through the same channel and for the same passenger.
- Save the cancellation confirmation and any message showing how the credit will be handled.
If the terms do not promise restoration, treat cancellation after the deadline as a possible permanent loss rather than counting on an exception.
Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect credit
The purchase was eligible but no credit appears
First compare the transaction date and posting date with the benefit’s deadline. Then verify that the merchant category, booking channel, and payment method match the terms. For the Chase examples, allow the stated one-to-two-billing-cycle or up-to-four-week period before escalating.
The credit posted for the wrong amount
Check whether part of the balance had already been used, whether taxes or fees were excluded, and whether the benefit applies to the full reservation or only an eligible component such as hotel accommodation. Keep the itemized receipt and portal confirmation when asking the issuer to review the calculation.
The transaction was canceled or refunded
Review the restoration clause before disputing the result. A refund may remove the qualifying charge while the credit remains expired, particularly under the Venture X rule described above. If the terms promise restoration and it does not occur, provide the original confirmation, cancellation record, and dates.
An airline credit will not apply
Verify the passenger name, airline wallet balance, issue date, flight eligibility, and fare restrictions. Card-issuer travel credits and airline-issued balances are separate systems; a card statement credit cannot necessarily pay for a flight that the airline’s own credit rules exclude.

Illustrative deadline scenarios
Anniversary credit with a late-posting charge
Suppose an account’s anniversary is September 20 and a qualifying hotel charge is made September 18. If that benefit’s terms require only an eligible purchase before the anniversary, the later statement-credit posting may be acceptable; if they require the transaction to post before September 20, it may not be. The terms, not the reservation date alone, decide the outcome.
Issue-date airline balance
If United TravelBank cash is issued on October 5, the cited terms place its expiration 12 months later. A different balance issued on December 1 would have a different deadline, even if both balances appear in the same airline wallet. Track each issue date separately.
Portal hotel credit
If a Sapphire Preferred cardmember books a hotel directly with the property on September 10, the purchase does not satisfy the cited Chase Travel channel condition. Booking the same property through Chase Travel, with the eligible accommodation charge identified at checkout, is the required path under that benefit.

Limits of these examples
The examples are U.S.-focused Chase and Capital One products plus the United TravelBank benefit referenced in Chase’s card terms. Benefits can change, and two cards from one issuer can have different deadlines, eligible purchases, posting windows, and restoration rules. The current terms attached to your exact account are authoritative.
No outside study establishes how much travel-credit value consumers generally lose, so there is no reliable universal “average unused credit” figure to use when planning. The issuer-stated amounts above describe the benefits themselves, not a promise that every cardholder will receive the full amount or that every purchase will qualify.
The practical rule
Use the credit according to its own clock and its own channel. Identify the deadline, match the purchase to the eligibility definition, complete it early enough for the required transaction event, and verify the credit after the issuer’s stated posting period. If cancellation is possible, read the restoration rule before paying; otherwise a booking that looked refundable can still leave the benefit forfeited.
