In every mode, give Claude a precise goal, audience, constraints, and source material; then verify important claims, review proposed code before edits, and run the project’s own checks.
Choose the Claude capability that fits the task
Claude is not one uniform workflow. The choice between web search, Research, extended thinking, the regular chat interface, Claude Code, and the Anthropic API changes how much information Claude gathers, how it cites evidence, and whether it can work with a codebase.

How to use Claude for research
Start with a question narrow enough to answer and specific enough to verify. A useful brief states the geography, date range, intended audience, evidence standard, and the decision the research should support. “Research electric-car incentives” is vague; “Identify incentives available to a first-time buyer in California in 2026, separating state and federal programs and citing the agency page for each eligibility rule” gives Claude a workable target.

1. Decide whether you need web search or Research
- Use web search when one or a few current facts will answer the question, such as a filing deadline, a product limit, or the wording of a regulation.
- Use Research when the answer needs multiple searches, source comparison, and a synthesized explanation. It is better suited to questions with competing interpretations, a long date range, or several categories of evidence.
- Use extended thinking instead when you already have the relevant documents and the difficult part is evaluating assumptions, calculating implications, or choosing among options.
2. Write a research brief before searching
Give Claude five pieces of context:
- Question and decision: what you need to know and what the answer will be used for.
- Scope: country or state, time period, population, industry, and exclusions.
- Evidence standard: for example, primary government sources for legal requirements and company filings for financial figures.
- Output format: a memo, comparison table, timeline, annotated bibliography, or briefing for a non-specialist.
- Uncertainty rule: require Claude to label unknowns, conflicting sources, and claims that cannot be verified.
You can ask Claude to begin by listing the searches it expects to run and the kinds of sources it will prioritize. That exposes an overly broad or poorly scoped plan before it consumes time.
3. Request a source table, not just prose
Ask for a table with one row per material claim and columns for the claim, source title, publisher, publication or update date, relevant passage, geographic or technical scope, and uncertainty. This makes a polished narrative auditable. It also prevents a common failure: a citation that is related to the topic but does not actually support the sentence attached to it.
4. Treat citations as a verification aid
Anthropic’s Help Center states that every web-search response includes citations so readers can verify sources themselves. A citation is not proof by itself. Open the cited page and check:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Whether the page says the exact thing Claude claims, rather than a weaker or different proposition.
- Its publication date and the date on which the information was last updated.
- Whether the rule applies to your jurisdiction, customer type, edition, or time period.
- Whether the number is a ceiling, average, one-time allowance, promotional figure, or recurring amount.
- Whether the source is primary, and whether a higher-quality primary source is available.
Keep only claims that survive that check. If two reliable sources disagree, show the disagreement and explain which scope or date accounts for it instead of silently selecting the more convenient figure.
5. Ask for a second-pass evidence audit
After Claude drafts the findings, ask it to identify every numerical, legal, medical, financial, or time-sensitive statement; map each one to a source; and mark unsupported or weakly supported claims. This is a separate task from writing the first draft. The separation makes it less likely that fluent wording will hide an evidentiary gap.

How to use Claude to write and edit a report
Claude produces more consistent work when writing is staged. Provide the intended reader, purpose, format, approximate length, voice, required sources, and any claims or topics that must be excluded. If you have source material, paste it or attach it and tell Claude which material is authoritative.
Stage 1: Create the brief and outline
Ask for an outline plus a list of missing evidence before requesting prose. The outline should assign each section a reader question, the evidence it will use, and the conclusion it must reach. If Claude cannot identify evidence for a planned section, you can narrow the assignment or conduct another search before drafting.
Stage 2: Draft with source links attached to claims
Request that links stay attached to the claims they support. Do not ask for a generic bibliography at the end if readers need to distinguish which source supports which number or statement. Tell Claude to preserve exact dates, units, definitions, and qualifications from the source.
Stage 3: Run a factual audit
Use a new prompt or a separate pass to check names, dates, calculations, quotations, and causal claims. Ask for a list of proposed corrections with the original sentence, the reason it is questionable, and the supporting source. Approve corrections deliberately rather than allowing an automatic rewrite to change the meaning.
Stage 4: Edit structure and reader flow
Once the facts are stable, ask Claude to find duplicated points, missing transitions, sections that answer a later question too early, and paragraphs that contain more than one idea. For complex material, request tables, numbered procedures, or decision trees where they reduce cognitive load.

Stage 5: Run a final style pass
The final pass should enforce the publication’s voice, heading hierarchy, terminology, reading level, and formatting rules. Ask Claude to preserve factual qualifiers and links while simplifying sentences. Style editing should not be allowed to remove a date, scope limitation, or uncertainty label merely because it makes the copy shorter.

How to use Claude Code in an existing repository
Claude Code is an agentic coding tool. The safest workflow treats it as a collaborator that first maps the repository, then proposes a change, and only afterward edits files under your direction.
1. Establish the repository’s context
Begin by asking Claude Code to identify the application entry points, relevant files, build and test commands, configuration files, architectural boundaries, and likely risks. Give it specific filenames or directories when you already know where the feature lives. Anthropic’s best-practices guidance recommends supplying relevant files, images, or URLs and explicitly telling Claude not to write code yet during this planning stage.
2. Ask for a plan without edits
Use a request such as: “Read the relevant files, explain how this feature works, propose a minimal implementation plan, list assumptions and tests, and do not edit anything yet.” Review the plan for scope creep, missing dependencies, data-model consequences, security implications, and migration or rollback needs.
3. Maintain a CLAUDE.md file
Keep stable project context in a CLAUDE.md file. Useful contents include:

- How to install dependencies and start the project.
- Commands for unit, integration, end-to-end, lint, type, and formatting checks.
- Directory ownership, architectural conventions, and generated-file rules.
- Supported runtime and framework versions.
- Testing requirements and the definition of a completed change.
- Known constraints, risky areas, and instructions not to modify particular files.
This prevents you from repeating the same conventions in every conversation and gives Claude stable context when a task spans several sessions.
4. Permit the smallest useful change
After approving the plan, authorize one coherent change at a time. Ask Claude to state which files it will touch and why. Small edits make review, rollback, and fault isolation easier than a request to “refactor the whole module.”
5. Inspect the diff
Read the diff as if a colleague submitted it. Check behavior, error handling, input validation, authorization boundaries, logging, performance-sensitive paths, and whether unrelated files changed. Ask Claude to explain any line you do not understand before accepting it.
6. Run the repository’s own checks
Use the commands documented by the project, not a generic test command guessed by the assistant. Run focused tests first, then the broader suite, linting, type checking, and build or packaging checks that the repository requires. If a check fails, provide the complete error and ask for diagnosis before asking for a fix; do not assume the most recent edit caused every failure.

7. Review behavior, not only tests
Tests can miss incorrect product behavior, unsafe defaults, inaccessible interfaces, data-loss scenarios, or an edge case that was never encoded. Exercise the changed path manually where appropriate and compare the result with the approved plan.

8. Use web preview carefully
Anthropic documents a Claude Code web preview that can run multiple tasks on Anthropic-managed infrastructure. Availability, supported plans, and operational details are volatile. Confirm the current documentation and your organization’s data and access policies before using a hosted preview for a repository.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using Claude with an application through the API
The Anthropic API web-search tool is intended for developers building web-enabled Claude applications, not for ordinary one-off browsing. Your application should define when searching is allowed, what domains or regions matter, how citations are returned to users, and what happens when sources conflict or the search fails.
API pricing and tool versions change. An Anthropic web-search API announcement in 2025 recorded a figure of $10 per 1,000 searches for that announced offering. Treat that as a historical announcement figure, not a current price; verify the live pricing and tool documentation before estimating costs or publishing a budget.
Plans, access, and cost decisions
Research is documented for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, while access to Claude Code, web preview, usage limits, and API tools can depend on the current product and account configuration. Do not infer availability from an old article or from another user’s account.
| Need | What to confirm before choosing |
|---|---|
| Occasional current lookups | Whether your current Claude interface includes web search and what usage limits apply |
| Multi-source investigations | Whether your plan includes Research, plus limits, citation behavior, and permitted data handling |
| Team research workflow | Workspace access, administrative controls, retention and privacy terms, and per-user limits |
| Repository coding | Claude Code availability, supported environments, authentication, and whether web preview is enabled |
| Embedded search in software | Current API tool name, version, request limits, citation format, and price |
When comparing plans, evaluate freshness needs, breadth of investigation, citation requirements, repository access, human-review workload, eligibility, and current cost together. A cheaper option that requires manual source gathering or extensive rework may not be cheaper for a time-sensitive project.
Common failure modes and how to recover
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The answer sounds confident but has weak support | The prompt asked for prose without an evidence standard | Request a claim-by-claim source table, open the citations, and remove unsupported claims |
| Sources are current but irrelevant | Geography, date range, or audience was omitted | Restate those boundaries and require Claude to label scope for every source |
| The report repeats itself | Drafting and editing happened in one unconstrained pass | Ask for a section outline, assign each point one home, and run a duplication audit |
| Claude Code changes too much | The request was broad and lacked a no-edit planning step | Reset the task, ask for repository orientation and a minimal plan, then authorize specific files |
| Tests pass but the feature is wrong | Tests did not cover the real user behavior or edge case | Recheck the acceptance criteria, perform a manual scenario review, and add a regression test |
| A price or feature claim is outdated | Product, plan, or API details changed | Check the current official documentation and attach the date and scope to the claim |
A practical end-to-end workflow
- Define the user, decision, geography, dates, and evidence standard.
- Choose web search, Research, extended thinking, Claude Code, or the API based on the task rather than habit.
- Provide source material, examples, constraints, and the required output format.
- Ask for an outline or repository plan before asking for a full draft or code change.
- Request a claim-level evidence table for research and a file-level implementation plan for coding.
- Draft or edit in separate passes: factual audit, structural edit, then style.
- Open important citations, inspect code diffs, and run the project’s own checks.
- Record stable project conventions in
CLAUDE.mdand update prompts when requirements change. - Recheck plan eligibility, API pricing, limits, and hosted-feature availability immediately before publication or deployment.
Used this way, Claude is most valuable as a structured research assistant, writing partner, and code collaborator—not as an authority whose first answer should be accepted without verification.
