You choose the linked Card and the number of points to apply during checkout; any uncovered amount remains charged to the Card.
The setup can be completed in the American Express app or through Amazon’s checkout Learn More flow. The exact points offer, eligible items, and redemption value are shown in your live checkout, so do not assume every Card, account, or product will receive the same option.

What “Shop with Points” at Amazon actually does
This feature connects an eligible U.S. American Express Membership Rewards account with your Amazon.com account. When you select points for an eligible order, Amazon processes the purchase using the linked American Express Card, while Membership Rewards deducts the points you authorize and applies the corresponding credit to the Card account under the applicable program terms.
You can use points for the entire eligible amount or only a portion. If the points you apply do not cover the full purchase, the balance remains a charge to the American Express Card. The checkout screen is the authority for the amount covered, the points required, and the remaining Card charge.

This is not a general-purpose conversion that applies to every Membership Rewards account. American Express states that “The value of Membership Rewards points varies according to how you choose to use them.” Your Card product and the redemption option presented at checkout can affect the value.
Who is eligible
Your American Express account
American Express limits Amazon Shop with Points registration to Card accounts enrolled in Membership Rewards. The Card must be active and not past due or cancelled. A Card that does not earn Membership Rewards cannot be used for this specific points-redemption connection, even if it is an American Express Card.
Your Amazon account and order
The instructions here cover Amazon.com in the United States. Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, and other country sites have separate programs, terms, and checkout presentations. An account or Card that works on Amazon.com should not be assumed to work in another market.
Amazon and American Express determine which purchases are eligible. The option may not appear for every product, seller, order type, or account. The live checkout presentation—not a general expectation about Amazon orders—determines whether points can be applied.
Information and access to have ready
- Your active Membership Rewards-earning American Express Card and access to its online account or app.
- The login details for the Amazon.com account that will be linked.
- A checkout containing an eligible purchase, with the linked Card available as a payment method.
- Enough available credit for any amount that points do not cover.
Choose a linking method

Route 1: Link from the American Express app
- Sign in to the American Express app for the Membership Rewards-earning Card.
- Open Account.
- Select Payment Tools.
- Choose Add Card to Wallets & Merchants.
- Select Amazon.
- Choose the Card you want to connect and review the displayed terms.
- Accept the terms and finish the linking process.
After the connection is complete, sign in to the same Amazon.com account, add an eligible item, and check whether the points option appears when you select the linked Card.

Route 2: Link during Amazon checkout
- Sign in to Amazon.com and proceed to checkout with an eligible order.
- Add or select the Membership Rewards-earning American Express Card as the payment method.
- Look for Learn More next to the eligible Card or points option.
- Follow Amazon’s prompts to connect the Card and Membership Rewards account.
- Complete the linking confirmation and return to the payment section.
- Review the points amount and remaining Card charge before placing the order.
American Express says the purchase-route connection can take up to 72 hours. If you have just added the Card and need to redeem points immediately, use the Learn More checkout route when it is offered rather than assuming the new connection is already available everywhere.
How to apply points to an Amazon order
- Confirm the market. Use Amazon.com in the United States, not a different country’s Amazon site.
- Check the Card. Make sure the linked payment method is the American Express Card enrolled in Membership Rewards, not another saved Card.
- Review eligibility. Confirm that the item and order show the points option. If the option is absent, do not assume points will be applied after the order is placed.
- Choose the points amount. Select the available points offer for all or part of the eligible purchase. The checkout display should show the points deducted and the amount charged to the Card.
- Check the final total. Review shipping, tax, discounts, gift-card balances, and any other order adjustments. The points offer may apply only to the eligible portion shown by Amazon.
- Place the order with the linked Card. Keep the confirmation for your records.
- Pay the Card account normally. Any amount not covered by points is charged to the Card, and you must continue to pay at least the minimum amount due by the due date while waiting for a statement credit or other posting.
Example of a partial redemption
Suppose an eligible Amazon.com order has a checkout total of $120 and Amazon offers you the choice to apply Membership Rewards points to part of it. You select the amount shown by checkout. The points are deducted according to that offer, a corresponding credit is associated with the American Express Card account, and the uncovered amount remains a Card charge. The example does not establish a fixed points-to-dollar rate; only your live offer supplies that figure.

When the points balance and Card statement update
Pending Amazon orders
American Express says the rewards balance may not reflect a redemption for a pending Amazon transaction until the purchase has shipped. A temporary mismatch between the checkout confirmation and the displayed points balance can therefore occur while Amazon is still processing the order.
Keep the order confirmation and note the shipment status. If the order has not shipped, a missing deduction may reflect normal processing rather than a failed redemption. Once the purchase reaches the relevant posting stage, compare the final Amazon order total, the Membership Rewards activity, and the Card account credit.
What the Card charge means
The underlying purchase is charged to the eligible American Express Card. The points redemption and corresponding credit operate within the Membership Rewards and Card-account framework; they do not remove your responsibility to monitor the Card statement. Interest, fees, or late-payment consequences are governed by your Card agreement, not by the fact that you selected points.

Why you should not use a universal conversion rate
American Express expressly says point value varies according to how points are used. The value available to one Cardholder may differ from another Cardholder’s options or Card product. Amazon’s checkout may present a particular number of points for a particular eligible amount, but that live offer should not be generalized to every order or redemption method.

Start with Amazon’s return authorization and return policy for the item. American Express says Amazon must authorize the return before American Express can credit the Card or return points to the rewards account.
Do not treat a return request, a carrier scan, or a seller message as proof that points have already been restored. Keep the Amazon authorization, refund confirmation, and the related American Express activity until both the points and any Card credit are reconciled.
If only part of an order is returned, the resulting refund and points restoration can depend on the portion Amazon authorizes and the terms applied to that transaction. Check the final Amazon refund and the Membership Rewards account separately rather than expecting an immediate one-for-one display while the return is pending.
Privacy and account-linking considerations
Linking is an exchange of account information, not merely a local setting on your phone. American Express says linking allows the rewards account to be connected and used and that it may provide Amazon information about the Membership Rewards account.

Review the linking terms and applicable privacy notices before accepting. If you later stop using the feature, check both accounts for any available unlinking or payment-method controls; removing a saved Card from Amazon is not necessarily the same action as ending every account connection described in the terms.

The Card is not offered for linking
- Verify that the Card account is enrolled in Membership Rewards.
- Check that the account is active and not past due or cancelled.
- Sign in to the same American Express account that holds the eligible Card.
- Use Amazon.com in the United States and confirm that the Card is saved to the intended Amazon account.
If those conditions are met but the Card still does not qualify, the account, product, order, or current program rules may not support the option. American Express and Amazon can change participating products and redemption availability.
The Card was just added and points are unavailable
The purchase-linking route can take up to 72 hours according to American Express’ terms. If immediate use matters, return to an eligible checkout and select Learn More beside the Card to complete the documented checkout linking route. Do not place an order expecting a later conversion if the points option is not visible before submission.
The points balance has not changed
Check whether the Amazon order has shipped. American Express says a pending purchase may not appear in the rewards balance until shipment. Compare the order status, the redemption confirmation, and the Membership Rewards activity after the shipment event.

The amount charged does not match your expectation
- Reopen the final checkout summary and distinguish the order total from the portion eligible for points.
- Check taxes, shipping, discounts, gift-card balances, and item-level changes.
- Confirm that the intended American Express Card—not another saved payment method—was used.
- Keep the confirmation and contact the appropriate party with the order number if the posted charge or credit remains inconsistent after processing.
A returned order has not restored points
Confirm that Amazon authorized and completed the return. American Express’ terms require Amazon authorization before the Card can be credited or points returned. A refund that is still pending may not yet have produced the corresponding rewards activity.

How to decide whether Amazon is a good use of your points
The convenience of applying points at checkout is not proof that it is the highest-value redemption. Compare the value displayed for this Amazon purchase with the other redemption choices currently available to your specific Cardholder account.
Use the live offer, not an internet-wide rate
Record the Amazon checkout’s points requirement and the dollar amount it offsets. Then view the alternatives available in your Membership Rewards account, such as other redemption categories shown for your Card. Because American Express says value varies by use and Card product, a rate reported for another Cardholder may not apply to you.
Consider convenience and cash flow
- Amazon checkout redemption can reduce the Card balance associated with an eligible purchase without requiring a separate transfer or booking process.
- A partial redemption lets you preserve some cash or points for another use, but the uncovered amount still becomes a Card charge.
- If you need a specific redemption value, compare the live figures before placing the order rather than relying on a remembered offer.
- Never spend beyond your budget merely because points are available; the transaction still runs through the Card account and its payment obligations.
Do not assume every order qualifies
Eligibility can vary by item, seller, order composition, and current Amazon or American Express terms. If the points control is absent, treat the order as a normal Card purchase unless and until checkout explicitly offers a redemption.
Terms can change
American Express states that participating partners and available rewards are subject to change without notice. Labels, eligible products, points values, and linking screens may therefore differ from an earlier order. Recheck your current American Express account and the current Amazon checkout each time you redeem.
The June 2026 U.S. Membership Rewards terms and American Express’ linking instructions describe the process and the up-to-72-hour timing estimate, but they do not guarantee that every eligible Cardholder will see the same offer. Your account’s current display controls the transaction.
Short answer to the two common questions
How do I use my Amex Membership Rewards points on Amazon?
Link an eligible Membership Rewards-earning American Express Card to your U.S. Amazon.com account through Account > Payment Tools > Add Card to Wallets & Merchants > Amazon in the American Express app, or use the Amazon checkout Learn More route. At checkout, select the linked Card and apply the points amount Amazon offers for the eligible purchase.
Can I pay for only part of my Amazon order with points?
Yes, when Amazon presents a partial-redemption choice for the eligible order. The selected points cover only the amount shown by checkout; the remainder stays charged to the linked American Express Card.
