How to Use a Qualified Charitable Distribution to Meet Your RMD

Yes. A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) can satisfy some or all of your required minimum distribution (RMD) for an IRA year when you are at least 70½ on the distribution date, the payment goes directly from the IRA trustee to an eligible charitable organization, and the amount stays within the applicable annual exclusion limit. A payment made to you first and donated later is not a QCD.

The QCD eligibility age and the RMD starting age are separate rules. The general current RMD starting age is 73, while the QCD rule can be used beginning at age 70½. The process below shows how to coordinate the transfer, meet the correct deadline, document it, and report it for the right tax year.

What a QCD does—and what it does not

A QCD is an IRA distribution sent directly to an eligible charity. The qualifying amount is excluded from federal gross income and can be applied against the IRA owner’s RMD for that calendar year. It is not a special investment product or a separate IRA type; it is a way of executing and reporting an otherwise charitable IRA distribution.

The tax result depends on every required condition being met. The IRA must be an account covered by the QCD rules, you must satisfy the age test on the date the distribution is made, the recipient must qualify, and the trustee must make the payment directly to that recipient. If you receive the money and then write a donation check, the transfer is generally a regular IRA distribution followed by a charitable gift rather than a QCD.

Check eligibility before requesting the transfer

Meet the QCD age test

You must be at least 70½ on the date the IRA distribution occurs. Turning 70½ later in the year does not make an earlier distribution a QCD. Conversely, you do not have to wait until the year your RMDs begin. This is why someone in the gap between age 70½ and the general RMD starting age of 73 can use a QCD even without a current RMD obligation.

Use an eligible IRA account

The general QCD rule applies to an IRA other than an ongoing SEP IRA or ongoing SIMPLE IRA. IRS Publication 590-B states that an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA is excluded from the general QCD rule. If your account is a SEP or SIMPLE arrangement, ask the custodian whether it is considered ongoing and whether a different rule applies before submitting a request.

Do not automatically apply ordinary IRA QCD assumptions to a workplace retirement plan, an inherited account, or another beneficiary arrangement. RMD calculation, aggregation, and payment rules can differ for those accounts. Confirm the account-specific treatment with the plan administrator or a tax professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the charitable recipient

The organization must be eligible to receive a QCD. Contact it before initiating the transfer and ask for its exact legal name, mailing or electronic-delivery instructions, and the process it uses to acknowledge a charitable contribution. A general charitable purpose is not enough if the recipient itself does not meet the QCD requirements.

Calculate the RMD and the amount you want to give

Determine the year’s RMD

Start with the RMD calculated for the specific IRA and tax year. Under current general rules, the first RMD is usually due by April 1 of the year after you reach age 73. After that first distribution, each annual RMD is generally due by December 31. Beneficiary IRAs and workplace-plan RMDs can follow different timing rules, so do not use these general dates without checking the account type.

If you take your first RMD by the April 1 deadline, you may also have another RMD due by December 31 of that same calendar year. That timing can create two distributions in one year and may affect how much of the year’s requirement you want to satisfy with a QCD.

Choose a QCD amount

An eligible QCD can cover all or only part of the IRA RMD. Subtract the qualifying QCD amount from the RMD amount that must be satisfied for the year. Any remaining RMD must still be distributed by its applicable deadline; a planned QCD does not erase an unpaid balance.

For example, if your IRA RMD is $30,000 and the trustee sends a qualifying $20,000 QCD directly to the charity, $10,000 of the RMD remains to be met. A later IRA distribution can satisfy that balance, but it must be made on time and handled under the regular RMD rules.

Know the annual QCD exclusion limit

The annual QCD limit is an exclusion ceiling, not a required donation and not a guarantee that every dollar transferred will be tax-free. The limit applies to the amount that can be excluded from income under the QCD rules, while the RMD itself may be larger or smaller.

Tax year or document Amount stated How to use it
2026 worksheet $111,000 IRS Publication 590-B (2025) shows $111,000 on the 2026 QCD adjustment worksheet’s line 4. The worksheet then applies its reduction for certain deductible IRA contributions made at age 70½ or older.
2025 tax-year return $108,000 The 2025 Form 1040 instructions state $108,000 for the 2025 tax year. Do not carry that older figure forward as the 2026 limit.

The 2026 worksheet’s $111,000 figure is the starting cap before the worksheet’s contribution adjustment. If you made deductible IRA contributions at age 70½ or older, the amount eligible for exclusion can be reduced under that worksheet. Follow the worksheet rather than assuming the published cap is your personal excludable amount.

If the total distribution exceeds the amount that qualifies for exclusion, the excess is included in income under the applicable IRS rules. Keep the calculation showing the RMD, the QCD amount, the annual limit, and any reduction so your tax preparer can reconcile the trustee’s reporting with your return.

Arrange a direct trustee-to-charity payment

The transfer route is the central operational requirement. Your IRA trustee or custodian must issue the distribution directly to the eligible charity. A check payable to you, even if you promptly endorse or donate it, does not meet the direct-payment requirement.

  1. Get the charity’s receiving instructions. Confirm the organization’s legal payee name, address or electronic instructions, and any reference number it wants included. Ask how it will acknowledge the gift and how long that acknowledgment usually takes.
  2. Ask the IRA custodian for its QCD procedure. Custodians use their own forms, portals, signatures, and cutoff times. Identify the exact IRA, the requested amount, the distribution year, and the charity as payee. Tell the representative that the payment must be a direct charitable distribution, not a payment to you.
  3. Choose only a custodian-supported delivery method. The trustee may offer a mailed check or an electronic transfer, but the available methods and processing times vary. Follow the custodian’s current instructions instead of assuming that a prior year’s method is still available.
  4. Review the request before signing. Check the amount, IRA number, charity name, delivery address, and tax-year intent. An error in the payee or account can turn a planned QCD into a different type of distribution.
  5. Verify completion. Ask when the trustee considers the distribution made and obtain confirmation of the amount and payee. Save the confirmation with the charity’s acknowledgment and the year-end tax form.

Time the transaction for the correct calendar year

QCDs are reported for the calendar year in which the IRA distribution is made. The date you submit a request is not necessarily the date the trustee processes or issues the distribution. A request mailed in December can be completed in the following year, leaving the earlier year’s RMD partly unpaid.

Begin the custodian’s process well before year-end, especially if the charity requires a mailed check or the trustee has a December cutoff. Near the deadline, ask the custodian what event controls the distribution date, whether the payment has cleared its review process, and how a failed or returned payment will be handled.

For a first RMD, coordinate the April 1 deadline and any December 31 RMD that follows in the same calendar year. For later years, treat December 31 as the usual annual deadline unless a different rule applies to your beneficiary or plan account.

Keep the records that prove the QCD

Retain the custodian’s request and confirmation, the distribution amount and date, the name of the IRA, and evidence that the payment was made to the charity rather than to you. Keep the charity’s contemporaneous acknowledgment as you would for other charitable contributions. The acknowledgment should identify the organization and the contribution and state whether any goods or services were provided.

Also keep your RMD calculation and a reconciliation showing how the QCD satisfied all or part of it. These records help resolve a mismatch between the gross distribution reported by the custodian and the amount you exclude on your return.

Report the QCD on your federal return

Use the return instructions for the tax year being filed

The 2025 Form 1040 instructions reviewed for this guide direct taxpayers to report total IRA distributions on line 4a. If the entire distribution qualifies as a QCD, the instructions generally direct the taxpayer to show zero taxable on line 4b and check the QCD box on line 4c. Those line references are specific to the 2025 return; check the instructions for the return year you are actually filing because forms and line labels can change.

The custodian may issue Form 1099-R reporting the gross IRA distribution. The form does not by itself determine how much is taxable. Use the QCD records and the current Form 1040 instructions to identify the qualifying amount and any taxable portion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not claim the same dollars twice

An amount excluded from income as a QCD cannot also be claimed as a charitable deduction. You receive the QCD benefit through the income exclusion, so listing the same transfer again as an itemized charitable contribution would duplicate the tax benefit.

Check whether Form 8606 or other schedules apply

Form 8606 may be required in circumstances involving IRA basis or Roth IRA distributions. Whether it applies depends on your account history and the rest of your return. Use the current-year IRS instructions and your individual facts rather than assuming that every QCD return is reported identically.

Worked examples

QCD covers part of an RMD

Your annual IRA RMD is $42,000. You direct the trustee to send $25,000 to an eligible charity during the calendar year. The qualifying QCD can satisfy $25,000 of the RMD, leaving $17,000 that must be distributed by the applicable deadline. The $25,000 is handled as a QCD on the tax return, while the remaining distribution follows the regular IRA distribution rules.

QCD covers the full RMD but not the full IRA withdrawal

Your RMD is $18,000, but you want to withdraw $30,000 for personal expenses and donate $18,000. Only the $18,000 sent directly to the eligible charity can be treated as the QCD toward the RMD. The $12,000 paid to you is a separate IRA distribution and is not converted into a QCD by a later donation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transfer exceeds the annual exclusion cap

Assume the applicable annual exclusion limit for your facts is $111,000 and the trustee sends $120,000 directly to the charity. The first $111,000 is within the stated cap before any required worksheet reduction; the remaining $9,000 is not automatically excludable as a QCD. The actual taxable treatment must reflect the applicable IRS rules and any personal reduction, so do not report the entire transfer as excluded solely because the charity received it.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Using the wrong age. The QCD test is 70½ on the distribution date. Do not wait for age 73 if you want to make an earlier QCD, and do not treat a distribution made before 70½ as qualifying.
  • Taking the check personally. If the check is payable to you, the direct-transfer condition is generally broken. Contact the custodian promptly; do not assume that donating the proceeds will repair the classification.
  • Leaving an RMD balance unpaid. A partial QCD does not satisfy the rest of the RMD. Recalculate the unpaid amount after the trustee confirms the QCD.
  • Missing the calendar year. A December request can settle in January. Verify the actual distribution date and plan around the custodian’s cutoff.
  • Using an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA without checking. The general QCD rule excludes an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA. Ask whether the account qualifies before directing a payment.
  • Using the 2025 dollar limit for 2026. The 2025 Form 1040 instructions state $108,000 for the 2025 tax year, while the 2026 worksheet in Publication 590-B (2025) shows $111,000 before the applicable reduction. Match the figure to the tax year.
  • Claiming a charitable deduction for an excluded QCD. The same dollars cannot be both excluded from income as a QCD and deducted as a charitable contribution.
  • Assuming inherited or workplace-plan rules are identical. Confirm the separate RMD and QCD treatment for those account types before transferring money.
  • Ignoring the contribution adjustment. Deductible IRA contributions made at age 70½ or older can reduce the amount excludable under the 2026 worksheet. Complete the worksheet instead of applying the headline cap mechanically.

A practical pre-submission checklist

  1. Confirm that you will be at least 70½ on the actual distribution date.
  2. Identify the IRA and verify that it is not an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA excluded from the general rule.
  3. Calculate the year’s RMD and note the amount that would remain after the proposed QCD.
  4. Check the applicable annual exclusion limit and complete any required deductible-contribution adjustment.
  5. Verify that the intended organization can receive a QCD and provide its exact payee instructions.
  6. Submit the custodian’s direct-payment request early enough for calendar-year processing.
  7. Obtain confirmation of the distribution date, amount, IRA, and charitable payee.
  8. Save the charity acknowledgment, custodian records, and RMD calculation.
  9. Use the current-year Form 1040 instructions when preparing the return, and check whether Form 8606 or other reporting applies.

When professional help is worth considering

Consult a tax professional when you have multiple IRAs, an inherited account, an ongoing SEP or SIMPLE IRA, deductible IRA contributions made after age 70½, IRA basis, Roth IRA distributions, or a first RMD that creates two distributions in one calendar year. These facts can change the calculation or reporting even when the payment is made directly to a charity.

The IRS also describes a separate one-time QCD exception for certain split-interest entities with different limits and reporting. That exception is outside the basic IRA-to-operating-charity procedure described here; use the specific IRS guidance for it rather than applying the ordinary steps.
