A crypto hardware wallet keeps the private keys that control your cryptocurrency away from the internet. Your coins do not sit inside the device: their ownership remains recorded on the relevant blockchain, while the wallet signs transactions only after you review and approve them.

The basic routine is straightforward—set up the device, protect its wallet backup, verify addresses on the device screen, and confirm that the asset and network are correct. Most costly mistakes happen when one of those checks is skipped.

What a hardware wallet actually does

A hardware wallet is a specialist device that protects private keys and signs transactions. The companion application—such as Trezor Suite, Ledger Wallet, or BitBoxApp—shows balances, prepares transactions, and communicates with the blockchain. The hardware device is the trusted signing screen.

This distinction matters. A wallet can protect your key while you still approve a transaction to the wrong address, select the wrong network, or give a malicious smart contract permission to spend your tokens. Treat the device screen as the final source of truth, not the computer or phone connected to it.

Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
  • Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.

Before you set up the wallet

  1. Buy from the manufacturer or an authorised reseller. Ledger’s Genuine Check can verify cryptographic authenticity, but it cannot identify every type of unauthorised physical modification. The seller and supply chain still matter.
  2. Install the official app. Download Trezor Suite, Ledger Wallet, or BitBoxApp only from the manufacturer’s official website or the manufacturer’s verified app-store listing. Fake wallet apps and support pages are common phishing tools.
  3. Prepare offline backup storage. You will need to write down the wallet backup or recovery words. Use paper or another durable offline medium. Do not photograph the words, email them, save them in cloud storage, or type them into a computer.
  4. Check the package for suspicious instructions. Never use a wallet that arrives with a prewritten recovery phrase or PIN. The device must generate the backup during setup. No legitimate support representative or website should ask you to type the words into a computer.

Set up a new hardware wallet

The exact buttons and menus differ by model, but the process normally follows this order:

  1. Install the official companion application.
  2. Connect and unlock the device when prompted.
  3. Install or confirm the device firmware.
  4. Choose Create new wallet, or the equivalent option.
  5. Allow the device to generate the wallet backup.
  6. Write down every word exactly and in the displayed order.
  7. Complete the device’s backup-verification test.
  8. Set a device PIN.
  9. Add or activate the accounts and networks you plan to use.

The backup is the master key to the wallet. Anyone who obtains it can generally restore the wallet and move its funds without possessing the physical device. If you lose both the device and the backup, recovery may be impossible. The PIN only unlocks the device; it does not replace the backup.

Trezor Suite

Trezor Suite’s setup flow generally prompts you to install firmware if required, back up the wallet, set a PIN, and activate assets from the dashboard. Trezor now usually calls the recovery seed or seed phrase a wallet backup. Older instructions may use “recovery seed”, “recovery phrase”, “mnemonic”, or “BIP39 phrase” for the same general concept.

Ledger Wallet

Ledger’s current materials refer to the companion software as Ledger Wallet and the device as a Ledger signer. Older guides may say Ledger Live. The setup principle is the same: generate and protect the Secret Recovery Phrase on the device, then install the asset-specific applications needed for your accounts.

Supported assets and menu names vary by model, firmware, and app version. Check the manufacturer’s current supported-coins list before transferring money. Do not assume that an asset supported by one model or network is supported by yours.

How to receive cryptocurrency

Receiving is usually safer than sending because the recipient does not approve an incoming transaction. However, you still need to verify the address and network before sharing it.

  1. Open the official wallet application.
  2. Select the correct asset account and network.
  3. Choose Receive.
  4. Generate or display the receiving address.
  5. Choose the option to verify the address on the hardware device.
  6. Compare the full address on the device with the address in the app.
  7. Only after they match, copy or share the address.
  8. For a large transfer, send a small test amount first.

Malware can replace an address shown on your computer or phone. The address displayed on the hardware wallet is the one to trust. You normally do not need to keep the device connected after the address has been verified and the sender has submitted the transaction.

App-specific receiving paths

App Path
Trezor Suite Select the account in the left sidebar, open Receive, generate the address, and confirm it matches the address displayed on the Trezor device. For Bitcoin, you may need to select Show full address.
BitBoxApp Select the account, click Receive Bitcoin, then Verify address on BitBox02. Unlock the device and compare the full address before copying it.
Ledger Wallet Select the asset account, choose Receive, and verify the address on the Ledger signer’s Secure Screen before sharing it.

Bitcoin and other UTXO-based networks commonly generate a new address for each payment. Earlier addresses may still work, but reusing them can reduce privacy. Account-based networks such as Ethereum generally reuse the account address.

How to send cryptocurrency

  1. Open the account containing the asset.
  2. Choose Send.
  3. Paste or scan the recipient’s address.
  4. Enter the amount.
  5. Review the network fee and transaction details.
  6. Check the destination address, asset, network, amount, and fee on the hardware device itself.
  7. Approve the transaction physically on the device.
  8. Wait for the blockchain confirmation.

Copy and paste reduces typing errors, but it does not make the clipboard trustworthy. Compare the destination shown on the device with the address you intended to use. A blockchain transaction generally cannot be reversed simply because an address was entered incorrectly.

In Trezor Suite, select the account, open Send, enter the address and amount, adjust the fee if necessary, and approve the details on the Trezor device. Do not copy an address from transaction history: address-poisoning scams can place a visually similar attacker address there.

In BitBoxApp, select the account, click Send, enter the destination and amount, review the transaction, and confirm it on the BitBox02. For Ethereum and ERC-20 transfers, check the recipient, amount, and fee displayed by the device.

Choose the right network

The asset name alone is not enough. The sender and recipient must use the same blockchain network.

For example, an EVM address beginning with 0x can be valid on Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Avalanche, and other networks. The identical-looking address does not prove that the network is correct. A transfer sent over an unsupported or wrong network may be permanently lost or require a recovery process that the wallet or exchange does not support.

When withdrawing from an exchange:

  1. Find the network supported by the receiving wallet account.
  2. Confirm that the exchange’s network name exactly matches the wallet’s account or network.
  3. Check the exchange’s minimum withdrawal and deposit amount.
  4. Send a small test transaction.
  5. Wait for it to arrive before sending the rest.

Do not choose a network merely because it is the cheapest or fastest option offered by the exchange. A lower fee is not a saving if the funds cannot be credited.

Tokens and gas fees

Tokens usually use the address of the network account that holds them. USDT on Ethereum uses the Ethereum account and Ethereum transfer route; USDT on another network uses that network’s account and route.

You may also need the network’s native coin to pay the fee. For example, an Ethereum account sending an ERC-20 token needs enough ETH for gas. A token balance by itself is not sufficient. The fee asset depends on the network: ETH, SOL, or another network’s native coin are not interchangeable just because they are managed by the same hardware wallet.

Memos and destination tags

Some networks and exchanges require a memo, destination tag, or similar payment identifier in addition to the address. This is common when sending XRP or XLM to an exchange that uses one shared address for many customers.

Missing or mistyping the tag can delay crediting or result in lost funds. In Trezor Suite, use the destination-tag control on the XRP Send page. For Stellar, use Add Memo/Destination tag when the recipient requires it. A tag is generally not needed when sending to another personal wallet, but the receiving service’s deposit instructions take priority.

  • EASY ASSET MANAGEMENT: Monitor and transact seamlessly with Trezor Suite, our user-friendly desktop and mobile app

Passphrases and hidden wallets

A passphrase is not an ordinary account password. Each unique combination of the wallet backup and passphrase derives a different wallet.

In Trezor Suite, the wallet switcher lets you choose between Standard and Passphrase wallets. If you mistype the passphrase, the device usually does not show an “incorrect password” error. It opens a different wallet, which will often appear empty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The passphrase is not recoverable by the manufacturer, and the recovery words alone will not restore funds held in a passphrase wallet. Use this feature only if you have a tested backup and a reliable method for reproducing the passphrase exactly. Test both the backup and passphrase before placing significant funds in the wallet.

Using Ledger or Trezor with MetaMask

MetaMask can display Ledger or Trezor accounts and prepare transactions for EVM networks. The hardware wallet must still approve the signing operation.

The current MetaMask connection path is:

  1. Unlock MetaMask.
  2. Open the account dropdown.
  3. Select Add account or hardware wallet.
  4. Choose Add hardware wallet.
  5. Select Ledger or Trezor.
  6. Follow the connection prompt and select the device.
  7. Select the hardware-derived account.

For Ledger, MetaMask’s current guidance calls for a USB connection, an unlocked device, and the Ethereum app open on the device. Keep Ledger Live closed while making the MetaMask connection, and keep the firmware, device app, browser, and extension current. Older browser-based U2F instructions are outdated.

A MetaMask account created directly by MetaMask is separate from a Ledger or Trezor account. Connecting a hardware wallet does not automatically protect every account visible in MetaMask. Only accounts explicitly derived from the hardware device receive hardware-signing protection.

DeFi and smart-contract transactions

A hardware wallet protects the private key, not your understanding of a transaction. You can still approve a malicious contract interaction, an unlimited token approval, or a transaction that transfers assets away.

Review the contract, destination, amount, permissions, and network. Reject requests whose purpose is unclear. “Blind signing” does not mean safer signing; it means the device may not show the complete human-readable meaning of the contract interaction. Use it only when you understand the application and transaction.

Updates and recovery checks

Keep the companion app and device firmware current, but confirm that your wallet backup is available before updating. A firmware update can erase a device if the update fails or a security check detects a problem. The wallet can then be restored only with the backup.

Trezor recommends checking the written backup before firmware updates. Its dry-run recovery verifies that the words are correct without moving funds. Never enter the backup into a computer because an update, pop-up, email, website, or support representative requests it. A legitimate recovery process is initiated by the hardware device and follows its on-screen instructions.

Common problems and the right response

Problem Likely cause What to do
The app and device show different receiving addresses Malware, wrong account, or wrong passphrase wallet Stop. Do not share the address. Check the selected account and wallet.
An exchange says the network is unsupported The exchange and wallet use different networks Cancel the withdrawal and select the exact network supported by the receiving account.
A token transfer fails despite a sufficient token balance There is not enough native currency for gas Add the correct network’s native fee asset to that account.
Funds reach an exchange but are not credited Missing tag, wrong network, or deposit below the minimum Check the exchange’s deposit instructions and contact the exchange.
The expected MetaMask account is missing Different backup, passphrase, derivation path, or account page Reconnect the same device and exact passphrase, then check the available account options.
The wallet is empty after a firmware update The device was wiped or the wrong backup or passphrase was loaded Restore with the original backup and re-enable the exact passphrase if applicable.
A small unfamiliar address or transaction appears in history Address poisoning or dusting Do not copy it. Get the intended address from the original source and verify it on the device.

Security rules worth remembering

  • The blockchain holds the coins; the hardware wallet protects the keys.
  • The wallet backup is more important than the physical device and must remain offline.
  • Verify receiving and sending addresses on the device screen.
  • Match the asset, network, account, fee currency, and memo or destination tag.
  • Use a small test transfer before moving a large balance.
  • Never enter the backup into a website, app, computer, phone, or support chat.
  • Do not assume every account in MetaMask is hardware-protected.
  • Do not approve smart-contract requests you cannot explain.

FAQ

Do crypto coins stay inside a hardware wallet?

No. The blockchain records the assets. The hardware wallet protects the private keys and signs transactions that control the associated addresses.

What happens if I lose my hardware wallet?

You can generally restore the wallet on a replacement compatible device using the original wallet backup. A PIN alone is not enough, so keep the backup offline and secure.

Should I keep the hardware wallet connected to receive crypto?

Usually not. Verify the receiving address on the device before sharing it, then the sender can submit the transaction without your device remaining connected.

Why did my token transfer fail when I had enough tokens?

You may not have enough of the network’s native currency to pay the fee. For example, ERC-20 transfers on Ethereum require ETH for gas in the relevant account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use the companion app to prepare transactions, but use the hardware wallet screen to verify and approve them. Protect the wallet backup as the master key, match the exact network before transferring funds, keep the required fee currency available, and treat every address, memo, and smart-contract request as something that must be checked—not assumed.
