For an Indian term-life policy, update the nominee or your contact details through the insurer that issued the policy. If the policy is credited to an Insurance Repository e-Insurance Account, you can also submit a servicing request to that repository. The insurer remains the authority that records a nomination change in the policy register.
Ask for a request or service reference, and for a nominee change retain the insurer’s written acknowledgment that the change was registered. Contact-detail requests may sometimes be applied to several policies held in the same e-Insurance Account, but the fields and policies covered depend on the repository and insurer.

This guide is for policies issued in India. Nomination law, forms, identity checks and servicing channels differ in other countries; policyholders elsewhere should use their own insurer’s current instructions.

A term-insurance policy normally contains separate records for the nominee and for the policyholder’s personal or contact information. A request might therefore concern:
#1 Best Overall
- a new nominee;
- a change to an existing nominee’s particulars;
- cancellation of a nomination followed by a new nomination;
- your postal address;
- mobile number, email address or other contact fields offered by the insurer; or
- the same personal details across policies visible in an Insurance Repository account.
The insurer is the party that registers policy changes. An Insurance Repository can provide an additional servicing route for policies held in an e-Insurance Account. Repository personnel handle requests within their service scope and forward requests that must be completed by the insurer.
Do not treat a change in an app profile, broker record or address book as a completed policy change. A nominee alteration is effective in the policy record only after the insurer receives and registers it.
Choose the right servicing route
Directly through the insurer
Use the insurer’s current official website, mobile application, customer-service channel, branch or other channel listed for policy servicing. This is the most direct route when the policy is not in an e-Insurance Account, when the repository does not support the particular request, or when the insurer asks for an additional form or verification.

If your policy is credited to an e-Insurance Account, sign in to the repository’s servicing channel or contact the repository using its current official instructions. IRDAI material describes repository servicing for policy details such as nomination, endorsement and address. A repository can complete requests within its scope and send other requests to the insurer.
For contact details, a repository request may update more than one policy held in that account. IRDAI’s FAQ uses an address change as an example. Confirm which exact field and which insurers’ policies will be covered before submitting one request for several policies.
| Question | Direct insurer route | Repository route |
|---|---|---|
| Is the policy eligible? | Any policy for which the insurer offers the relevant servicing channel. | Only a policy credited to the particular e-Insurance Account and within the repository’s service scope. |
| Who ultimately records a nomination change? | The issuing insurer. | The repository may process or forward the request; the issuing insurer must register the policy change. |
| Can one request cover several policies? | Usually handled according to that insurer’s process; do not assume a cross-insurer update. | Potentially, for details such as address, subject to the account, field and repository scope. |
| What confirmation should you keep? | The insurer’s request reference and written acknowledgment of registration for a nominee change. | The repository receipt or reference, plus the insurer’s acknowledgment when the request is forwarded or registered. |
| Are forms and documents standardized? | No universal checklist is established; follow the insurer’s current instructions. | No universal checklist is established; the repository or insurer may require additional verification. |
Prepare before submitting a request
Preparation reduces delays, but there is no single nationwide document list or mandatory nominee-data format established for every Indian insurer. Check the current instructions for your policy rather than relying on a form from another company.

- Locate the policy number and the policyholder’s name exactly as shown in the policy record.
- Write down the precise change: for example, “change nominee particulars,” “cancel existing nomination and register a new nominee,” or “change correspondence address and mobile number.”
- Have access to the policyholder’s current contact channel and whatever identity or supporting records the insurer’s instructions request.
- For a nominee request, enter the nominee’s details exactly as required by the insurer’s form or screen. Do not guess which relationship, date-of-birth or other fields are mandatory.
- If the policy is in an e-Insurance Account, note the repository account details and list the policies you expect a contact-detail request to affect.
- Use only the insurer’s or repository’s current official channel. Save screenshots, submitted forms, uploaded files, email messages and transaction or service numbers.
How to change the nominee
- Open the policy-servicing channel. Start with the insurer’s official policy-service page, application, customer-care route or branch. If the policy is held in an e-Insurance Account, you may start with the repository instead.
- Identify the policy. Provide the policy number and the policyholder information requested by the channel. If you are using a repository, select the relevant policy and confirm that it is credited to your account.
- Select the nomination request. Choose the option corresponding to a new nomination, change of nomination, cancellation, or nominee-particulars correction. If the available option does not match your need, ask the insurer which process applies rather than submitting an inaccurate category.
- Enter the requested nominee information. Use the exact fields and spelling required by the insurer. The evidence available for Indian policies does not establish one universal set of fields or one mandatory document package.
- Complete the insurer’s verification. Follow the current identity check, signature, authentication, form-upload or in-person requirement shown by the insurer or repository. Requirements can differ by company and request type.
- Submit and record the reference. Save the acknowledgment page, email, receipt number or branch-stamped copy. If a repository forwards the request, keep both the repository reference and any insurer reference that follows.
- Wait for registration confirmation. A nomination request is not complete merely because an online form was submitted. The insurer must register the change in its policy records.
- Check the updated record. Review the policy information or endorsement in the insurer’s service portal, policy document or e-Insurance Account. Make sure the nominee and effective record are shown as intended.
Why written acknowledgment matters
The IRDAI-hosted text of Section 39 states: “The insurer shall furnish to the policy-holder a written acknowledgment of having registered a nomination or a cancellation change thereof, and may charge a fee not exceeding one rupee for registering such cancellation or change.” That wording comes from legacy regulatory text. Keep the acknowledgment, but verify the current law and any current fee before treating the quoted rupee amount as applicable today.

How to change your address and other contact details
- List every field that needs changing. Separate address, mobile number, email and any other field displayed by your insurer. A request to change one field does not necessarily change the others.
- Check whether the policy is in an e-Insurance Account. If it is, the repository may offer a single personal-details request for multiple policies. Address is expressly given as an example in IRDAI’s FAQ; confirm the exact fields and policies covered.
- Submit through the chosen route. Use the insurer’s current form or digital workflow, or the repository’s servicing process. Follow its instructions for authentication and supporting records.
- Confirm the scope. If you submitted through a repository, ask whether the request was completed there or forwarded to each insurer. If you submitted to one insurer, do not assume another insurer’s policy changed.
- Verify delivery and display. Check the updated policy record, endorsement or e-Insurance Account. Send a test message or make a call only if the insurer’s process indicates that a contact channel was changed; the decisive evidence is the policy record.
Changing an address may affect where notices are sent, but it does not by itself change a nominee. Submit a separate nomination request when that is the intended change.
How long should the update take?
An IRDAI life-insurance servicing rule published in 2005 says an insurer should respond within 10 days of receiving a policyholder communication on matters including change of address, a new or changed nomination and policy endorsements. This is a response-time requirement in the cited text, not a promise that every update will be fully processed within 10 days. The text is from an older IRDAI-hosted page, so check current consolidated regulations or amendments before presenting it as an unconditional current-law deadline.
Count from the point at which the insurer or repository can show receipt of a complete request, and keep the reference that establishes that date. If additional verification is requested, provide it through the official channel and retain proof of submission.
What to do when the request is rejected, delayed or missing
No acknowledgment or reference number
Contact the same insurer or repository channel and ask for written confirmation that the request was received. Provide the policy number, submission date, channel used and any screenshot or payment record. If a repository was involved, ask whether the request was forwarded to the insurer.

The policy still shows the old nominee
Ask the insurer whether the nomination was registered, not merely whether the form was uploaded. Request the registration acknowledgment and the date recorded in the policy system. Do not submit repeated conflicting nominations while the first request is unresolved; ask the insurer which request should be treated as operative.
Only some contact details changed
Compare the fields in the confirmation with the fields you requested. Ask the insurer which fields were accepted and whether a separate request is required for the remainder. A repository-wide request may not cover every policy or every type of personal detail.
The repository says the insurer must handle it
Use the forwarding reference to contact the issuing insurer. A repository’s inability to complete a request does not mean the policy cannot be changed; it means the request is outside that repository service scope or requires insurer action.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe insurer asks for documents you did not expect
Follow the insurer’s current, policy-specific instructions and verify the request through an official channel before sending sensitive information. There is no evidence of one mandatory document checklist that applies to all Indian term policies.
Escalating an unresolved service request
- Follow up with the insurer first. Use its grievance or customer-complaints cell, quoting the policy number, service reference, dates and the exact remedy requested.
- Keep a complete record. Save correspondence, acknowledgments, uploaded documents, call references and delivery dates. This record is useful if the matter moves beyond ordinary customer service.
- Use the current regulator or Ombudsman process if necessary. IRDAI’s life-insurance guidance says a policyholder may approach the regulator’s grievance channel or the Insurance Ombudsman when the insurer does not respond within a reasonable period or the response is unsatisfactory, subject to the applicable process and eligibility. Check the current instructions and eligibility before filing.
Escalation does not replace the need for insurer registration. Ask the insurer to confirm the policy-record change and retain that confirmation even if a complaint is also open.
Practical checks after the update
- The policy number on the confirmation matches the policy you intended to change.
- The nominee name and other displayed particulars match the submitted request.
- The address, phone and email fields show the intended values wherever you requested them.
- An endorsement, updated policy record or e-Insurance Account entry is available when the insurer says one should be.
- You have the insurer’s written acknowledgment for a registered nominee change.
- You know whether a repository request affected one policy or several.
- Your family or other trusted representative knows where the current policy record and acknowledgment are stored.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a repository, broker or agent can register a nomination without confirmation from the insurer.
- Using an old form or an unofficial web page because its document list appears convenient.
- Changing an email or address in a general account profile but not in the policy record.
- Assuming an address update automatically changes the nominee.
- Sending the same request repeatedly without preserving the first reference and asking which submission is valid.
- Treating the 10-day figure in the older IRDAI text as a guaranteed completion date or quoting the historical one-rupee fee without checking current rules.
A quick decision guide
Use the following sequence when you are unsure where to begin. First, check whether the policy appears in an e-Insurance Account. If it does not, start with the issuing insurer. If it does, compare the requested change with the repository’s stated service scope. A repository may be convenient for an address or other personal-detail request affecting several policies, but it may forward a nomination request or another policy-level change to the insurer.
Rank #4
Next, decide whether you are changing a policy record or only correcting a general profile. A policy-level request should identify the policy number and produce a service reference. For a nomination change, continue until the insurer confirms registration in writing. For contact details, confirm whether the result applies to one policy, several policies in the account, or only the repository profile.
Finally, compare the confirmation with the original request field by field. If the confirmation is silent about one requested field, ask whether it was omitted, rejected or placed in a separate workflow. This is safer than assuming that an address, phone number and email update are automatically bundled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a clear record of the change
Keep one folder, physical or electronic, for the request. Include the policy number, the date and channel used, the exact wording of the requested change, uploaded documents, screenshots, reference numbers and every response. If you used a repository, retain its receipt as well as the insurer’s later acknowledgment. This record helps establish when the request was received and what you actually asked for if the policy continues to display old information.
Send sensitive identity documents only through the official insurer or repository channel. An unexpected message asking for documents or payment should be checked against the contact details on the insurer’s current official website. Do not rely on an agent’s verbal assurance that a nomination has changed; request the insurer’s written registration acknowledgment.
Costs, forms and channel differences
Do not assume that every insurer uses the same form, online screen, identity check or fee. The available Indian guidance does not establish a single nationwide checklist for nominee data or supporting documents. Follow the instructions attached to your specific policy and request type.

The older IRDAI-hosted Section 39 wording mentions a fee of up to one rupee for registering a cancellation or change of nomination. Treat that as historical wording, not as a current universal charge. Ask the insurer to state any current fee and retain the receipt if one is charged. A service reference and written acknowledgment are more important than the appearance of a completed online screen.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my nominee entirely online?
Some insurers and repositories offer digital servicing, but workflows and verification differ. An online submission is not proof that the nominee was registered. Keep the reference and obtain the insurer’s written registration acknowledgment.
Will changing my address update every policy I own?
A repository may allow one personal-details request for multiple policies held in an e-Insurance Account; IRDAI gives address as an example. Confirm the exact field and policies covered. A request sent to one insurer should not be assumed to update another insurer’s policy.
What if my repository cannot process the nominee change?
Ask for the forwarding reference and contact the issuing insurer through its official servicing channel. The repository may be outside its service scope, while the insurer remains responsible for registering the policy change.
What documents are mandatory for a nominee change?
There is no single checklist established for every Indian insurer. Use the current instructions for your policy and request type, including any identity, signature, authentication or form-upload requirements.
Does the 10-day rule mean the update must be completed in 10 days?
The cited IRDAI servicing text describes a response within 10 days for communications including address and nomination matters. It does not necessarily mean every update is fully processed within that period, and the older wording should be checked against current rules.
Is the historical one-rupee nomination fee still payable?
The one-rupee wording appears in older IRDAI-hosted Section 39 text. Verify the current rule and the insurer’s present fee instructions instead of assuming that amount applies today.
Can my broker or agent register the change for me?
They may help submit a request, but do not treat their assistance as registration. Confirm that the issuing insurer has updated its policy record and retain the insurer’s written acknowledgment.

The Bottom Line
Use the issuing insurer’s official servicing channel, or an Insurance Repository for an eligible e-Insurance Account policy. Give the policy number and exact change, keep every reference, and verify the updated record. For a nominee change, insist on the insurer’s written acknowledgment of registration; if service stalls, use the insurer’s grievance channel and then the current IRDAI or Insurance Ombudsman process.
