There is no single switch that changes your mobile number across India’s financial records. Update each record with the organisation that controls it: UIDAI for Aadhaar, the Income Tax e-Filing portal for profile contact details, your bank or financial institution for its account records, the relevant UPI app for UPI registration, and EPFO for your UAN profile. A successful Aadhaar update does not prove that your bank, e-Filing profile, insurance, broker, demat, wallet or EPFO number has changed.
The safest order is to secure the new SIM, update Aadhaar if other services depend on its registered mobile, change your e-Filing profile, update each bank and investment provider, re-register UPI where required, and then confirm every account individually. The exact screens and identity checks can change, so use the live official portal or your provider’s authenticated channel when you perform each step.

What you need before changing a registered number
Make a list of every service that can send an OTP, transaction alert, recovery message or regulatory notice. Include Aadhaar, Income Tax e-Filing, savings and current accounts, credit cards, loans, insurance, mutual funds, broker and demat accounts, pension products, wallets, UPI apps and your EPFO UAN. Treat these as separate records even when the same phone number appears on all of them.

- Record the old-number status. Note whether it still receives SMS, is temporarily unavailable, or has been permanently disconnected. The available recovery route depends on this.
- Use only authenticated channels. Open the provider’s official app or type its official web address yourself. Never give an OTP, UPI PIN, password or card details to an unsolicited caller claiming to update your number.
- Save evidence. Keep acknowledgement receipts, request numbers, confirmation messages and screenshots until you have tested the new number on every important account.
Do not cancel the old SIM until practical checks are complete where you can safely keep it. Some institutions may still send a one-time confirmation or alert to the previous number during a security-sensitive change.

1. Update the mobile number linked to Aadhaar
UIDAI says a registered mobile number is essential for Aadhaar online services. Its Aadhaar data-update page, marked last updated 17 September 2026, lists mobile number among updateable demographic information and describes mobile-number updating as an Aadhaar app capability. Check the current app availability and the instructions shown by UIDAI before relying on an app-based route: UIDAI’s Updating Data on Aadhaar page.

When the UIDAI app route is available
Open the official Aadhaar app, sign in using the method it currently supports, choose the demographic-data update option and select mobile number. Enter the new number exactly as registered with your telecom provider, complete the verification requested in the app and save the acknowledgement or request reference. The app’s labels, eligibility rules and verification sequence can change; follow the on-screen instructions rather than an old screenshot or third-party video.

When you need an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre
UIDAI states that a person who did not register a mobile number at enrolment must visit a Permanent Enrolment Centre to register one. A centre can also be the practical route when the old number is unavailable or the app cannot complete the request. UIDAI describes demographic and biometric updates being handled by an operator at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. Use UIDAI’s official centre locator and take the identity documents and any other items the current instructions require.
Before leaving, check that the new number has been entered correctly. The acknowledgement receipt contains an Enrolment ID (EID). Retain it: UIDAI says the EID can be used to check the status of the request. An acknowledgement proves that a request was submitted, not that every other organisation has updated its own record.

What an Aadhaar update does not do
Changing the Aadhaar mobile record does not automatically rewrite your bank, PAN/e-Filing, insurance, broker, demat, wallet or EPFO profile. Those organisations hold their own customer records and apply their own authentication rules. After UIDAI confirms the request, continue with the separate updates below.
2. Change the contact number in the Income Tax e-Filing profile
The Income Tax Department’s My Profile user manual describes a separate e-Filing contact-details workflow. It supports changing the mobile number and email contacts in the profile; it does not establish that every record associated with your PAN is changed automatically.

- Open the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and sign in with your existing credentials.
- Open My Profile.
- Choose the option to edit contact details.
- Enter the new mobile number, review it digit by digit and save the change.
- Complete the verification prompts shown by the portal. The manual describes separate OTPs for primary and secondary mobile numbers and email addresses, so keep access to the channels the portal requests.
- Return to the profile after verification and confirm that the new number is displayed as the intended primary contact. Save the confirmation or take a screenshot for your records.
Portal labels and verification rules can change. If the current screen differs from the manual, follow the live portal’s sequence and help text. A completed e-Filing profile update should not be treated as confirmation that a bank, insurer, mutual fund, broker or other PAN-using institution has changed its own mobile record.
3. Update each bank and financial institution separately
Banks and other regulated financial institutions maintain their own registered-mobile records. The Reserve Bank of India’s KYC directions establish that regulated entities should have due-diligence procedures for requests to change a registered mobile number in applicable account contexts. The directions do not prescribe one identical customer journey for every bank. Read the current RBI material at the RBI KYC Master Directions page.
Choose the bank’s authenticated route
Depending on the institution, the available route may be an authenticated mobile-banking app, internet banking, a branch, an ATM-based service or a customer-support process that directs you to one of those channels. Use only the route the bank currently publishes. A bank may pause the change, require additional identity or KYC checks, or ask you to visit a branch when the old number cannot receive an OTP.

- Sign in through the bank’s official app or website, or visit the branch or support channel listed by the bank.
- Locate the profile, contact-details or service-request option for changing the registered mobile number.
- Enter the new number and complete every authentication or identity check requested. The bank may use the old number, the new number, account credentials, card details, branch verification or other due-diligence controls.
- Save the request reference and any confirmation message.
- After the bank says the change is complete, test a low-risk function such as receiving a legitimate account alert or signing in through the normal app. Do not create a transaction merely to test an alert.
Repeat this process for every bank, card issuer, loan account and financial institution. A number changed on one account does not establish that a jointly held account, supplementary card, fixed deposit, loan or credit-card profile at the same institution uses the new number.
Protect yourself from number-change scams
- Do not disclose an OTP, UPI PIN, card PIN, password or full card credentials to a caller, text-message sender or social-media account.
- Reject links that ask you to install remote-control software or share your screen to “complete KYC”.
- If a caller claims your old number must be changed urgently, end the call and contact the bank using the number printed on its official website, card or statement.
- Report an unexpected number-change alert to the institution immediately through its official fraud channel.
4. Re-register UPI after a SIM, number or app change
UPI has its own registration layer. The National Payments Corporation of India’s UPI Frequently Asked Questions says a customer needs to re-register for UPI after a SIM/mobile change or a change of PSP application. A bank account may not be fetched if the number registered with the bank does not match the number verified in the UPI app.
UPI recovery sequence
- First make sure the new number is registered with the bank account you intend to use. If the bank still holds the old number, the UPI app may not find the account.
- Install or open the official UPI app you want to use and choose its registration or mobile-verification flow.
- Allow the app to verify the SIM and mobile number using the method it displays. Keep the correct SIM in the phone and ensure the app has the permissions it legitimately requires.
- Select the bank and account when the app fetches them, then recreate or confirm the UPI profile and UPI PIN only through the app’s normal secured screens.
- Check that the expected account and UPI ID are visible. If the account is missing, compare the bank’s registered number with the number verified in the app before trying repeatedly.
Changing a UPI app is not the same as changing a bank record. Complete both updates and expect to repeat UPI registration when the SIM, mobile number or PSP app changes.
5. Update the mobile number on your EPFO UAN
EPFO’s FAQ for UAN members describes changing the number through Member Profile in the Unified Portal. It also describes a recovery route when the old number is unavailable and you need to recover access.
When you can sign in
- Open the EPFO Unified Member Portal and sign in.
- Open Member Profile and choose the mobile-number change option shown there.
- Enter the new number and complete the portal’s verification prompt.
- Save the confirmation and sign in again, if requested, to make sure the profile now shows the new number.
When the old number is unavailable
If password recovery is needed, the EPFO FAQ describes matching member details and KYC information, then sending an OTP to a new number for recovery. Use the live portal’s current recovery screens and enter your details exactly as they appear in your EPFO and KYC records. A mismatch can prevent the recovery route from succeeding; do not keep guessing or give your credentials to an agent promising to bypass verification.

6. Do the remaining accounts one provider at a time
After Aadhaar, e-Filing, banks, UPI and EPFO, work through the rest of your list. Insurance companies, mutual-fund registrars, brokers, demat providers, pension administrators, card issuers, wallets and lenders each control their own contact database. Use the provider’s authenticated app, website, branch or support process and ask how it confirms completion.
- Insurance: check every policy, including health, life, vehicle and travel policies, because alerts and claim communications may be held separately.
- Investments: review mutual-fund folios, broker logins, demat accounts, pension accounts and any registrar profile connected to your investments.
- Credit: update credit cards, personal loans, home loans, vehicle loans and buy-now-pay-later accounts separately.
- Payments: review wallets, bill-payment services and recurring mandates that use SMS verification.
- Employer and retirement records: check payroll, pension and other workplace systems in addition to EPFO.
Ask each provider what evidence it supplies after completion: an on-screen status, email, SMS, downloadable acknowledgement or service-request number. Keep that evidence until alerts arrive on the new number and the account’s profile displays it.

Start by securing the replacement SIM from your telecom provider. Then use the route that does not depend on receiving an OTP at the old number, where the institution offers one.
Aadhaar
UIDAI lists mobile-number updates through its supported routes and says online Aadhaar services rely on a registered mobile. If the old number blocks an online step, use UIDAI’s official help and enrolment-centre locator rather than a third-party intermediary. At a centre, retain the acknowledgement and EID for status checking.
EPFO
Use the UAN recovery option described in the EPFO member FAQ: match the requested member and KYC details and send the recovery OTP to the new number. Follow the portal’s current prompts because a changed interface can alter the order of the screens.

Banks and other providers
Contact each provider through its official channel and ask for its lost-number identity-verification route. The institution may require a branch visit or additional due diligence. There is no authoritative basis for assuming that a bank, insurer, broker or wallet will accept the same proof or procedure as UIDAI or EPFO.
Do not pay an agent who promises to bypass OTP or identity checks. A legitimate provider will explain its approved recovery process and will not ask for your security credentials.
How the update routes differ
| Record | Who controls it | Established route or dependency | What to retain or check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar mobile | UIDAI | UIDAI lists mobile-number updating among demographic/app services; a Permanent Enrolment Centre is required for a person who did not register a mobile at enrolment. | Centre acknowledgement containing an EID; use it to check request status. |
| Income Tax contact | Income Tax e-Filing portal | My Profile > edit contact details, followed by verification; the manual describes separate OTPs for primary and secondary contacts. | Profile display and portal confirmation; this is not proof that every PAN-using record changed. |
| Bank or financial institution | The individual institution | RBI KYC directions require due-diligence procedures in applicable contexts, but the customer process is institution-specific. | Provider request reference and a confirmed profile or alert on the new number. |
| UPI | UPI app and linked bank | NPCI says re-registration is needed after a SIM/mobile or PSP-app change; bank and app numbers must match for account fetching. | Expected bank account visible in the re-registered app. |
| EPFO UAN | EPFO Unified Portal | Member Profile change; recovery can match member and KYC details and send an OTP to a new number when the old one is unavailable. | Successful sign-in and the updated Member Profile. |
Final verification checklist
Mark an item complete only after the provider confirms its own record. A message from one organisation is not evidence for another.

The practical rule
Change the number at the record owner, not merely at a related service. Aadhaar, e-Filing, banks, UPI and EPFO use different systems and verification controls. Completing each provider’s authenticated process—and then checking its confirmation—is the only dependable way to know that your new number is attached to the accounts that matter.
