If an NRI investment application is rejected for KYC reasons, do not submit the same application again immediately. First obtain the rejection reason from the mutual fund house (AMC) or its registrar, check the PAN-linked record through the relevant KYC Registration Agency (KRA), correct the specific discrepancy through the AMC’s official Modify/Update KYC route or its instructed offline channel, and then confirm that the KRA record has changed before reapplying.
KYC records are validated against KRA data. A missing KYC form or KRA acknowledgment, inconsistent identity or address information, incomplete legacy data, or unresolved overseas tax-residency details can all stop an application. The exact cause must come from the AMC or registrar handling your application.

What to do first after the rejection
- Save the rejection message and reference numbers. Keep the application number, folio or account reference, date of rejection, email headers and any document checklist. These details help the AMC or registrar locate the failed record.
- Ask for the failed KYC item in writing. Request the exact field or document that failed validation—for example, a name mismatch, address discrepancy, missing acknowledgment, incomplete legacy record or additional due-diligence requirement. “KYC rejected” alone is not enough information to correct the record.
- Check the PAN on the KRA status page. Use the KRA route supplied by the AMC or the status and form links on AMFI’s KYC page. Record the KRA name, status wording and date shown.
- Compare the KRA record with the application. Check identity details, PAN, address, mobile number, email address, tax-residency declarations and any FATCA/CRS information. Correct only information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Submit the correction through an official channel. Use the AMC’s Modify/Update KYC page, a KRA-supported route identified by the AMC, or the prescribed paper form through the AMC or registrar. Confirm in advance that the channel accepts documents from an NRI and what certification is required.
- Check the KRA record again before reapplying. Ask the AMC whether the corrected record has propagated to its application system. No universal processing time is established, so rely on the confirmation from the relevant KRA, AMC or registrar rather than a promised number of days.
SEBI-hosted common application instructions state: “Application Form not accompanied by KYC Application Form or letter / acknowledgment issued by KRA may be rejected by the Fund.” The same instructions explain that KYC compliance is checked against KRA records and that the fund may request further information.

A rejected investment application does not by itself identify which part of the KYC chain failed. The application, the AMC’s internal records and the KRA record must agree. Common evidence-supported possibilities include:

- Missing KYC material: the application was not accompanied by the required KYC application form or KRA acknowledgment.
- Mismatch with the KRA record: the name, PAN, address, mobile number or email supplied in the application differs from the validated record. Bank of India Mutual Fund describes these attributes as part of KRA validation.
- Incomplete or old KYC data: a legacy record can be registered but still lack information required when the investor approaches another intermediary.
- Document discrepancy: NDML KRA uses “On Hold” for a record held because of a discrepancy in KYC documents.
- PAN-related rejection: NDML’s guide says its “KYC Rejected” status may follow PAN verification with other KRAs where that PAN is already available with another KRA.
- Additional due diligence: the AMC may request further information, identity verification or other documentation before accepting the investment.
- NRI tax-residency information: overseas address, FATCA or CRS declarations may be incomplete, outdated or inconsistent with the application.
These are possible causes, not a diagnosis of any individual case. Ask the AMC or registrar to identify the precise failed field or document before changing anything.
Understand the KRA status shown for your PAN
Status labels are not universal shorthand. The definitions below come from NDML KRA’s KYC Status Description; another KRA or intermediary may display wording differently. Use the exact wording on your own status screen when communicating with the AMC.

“On Hold” and “Rejected” therefore describe different situations in NDML’s framework. An on-hold record points to a document discrepancy; NDML’s rejected description concerns PAN verification against another KRA. Do not treat one label as proof of the other.

1. Retrieve the complete rejection trail
Look beyond a subject line such as “KYC rejected.” Check the message, portal notification and attached checklist for a rejected field, document name, upload error or request for clarification. Note whether the decision came from the AMC, its registrar, a payment or onboarding platform, or a KRA. If the message is generic, contact the AMC’s NRI service desk or registrar and ask for the validation response linked to your application reference.
Use a written channel where possible. A written reply gives you the exact spelling of the requested correction and creates a record if the case has to be escalated. Do not send passport, tax or bank documents to an address obtained from an unrelated message; use the contact details published by the AMC, registrar or KRA.

2. Check the PAN-linked KRA status
Open the status-check route linked from AMFI’s KYC page or the KRA named by the AMC. Enter the PAN and the other fields requested by the official page. Save a PDF or screenshot showing the status, date, KRA name and any explanatory text.
If more than one KRA or intermediary appears in the process, tell the AMC exactly which record you checked. A status displayed by one KRA does not automatically prove that every AMC system has received the same update.
3. Compare every material field
Place the rejected application and the KRA record side by side. Check:
- full name, initials, spelling and name order;
- PAN and date of birth or incorporation details where applicable;
- permanent, correspondence and overseas residential addresses;
- country of residence and tax-residency declarations;
- mobile number and email address;
- FATCA/CRS classifications and US or non-US status information;
- document validity, signatures, photographs and certification; and
- the KRA acknowledgment or other identifier supplied with the application.
Do not “standardize” a field merely because two formats look different. Ask the AMC whether it needs the KRA record changed, the investment application corrected, or both. Changing a correct KRA field can create a second mismatch.
4. Use the AMC’s official online update path
AMFI maintains links to AMC modification pages and KYC forms. Start at AMFI’s KYC page, select the relevant AMC’s KYC or modification link, and follow the page’s current instructions. The label may appear as Modify KYC, Update KYC or a similar phrase.

Before uploading, check the page for file-size limits, accepted formats, e-sign or OTP requirements, and instructions for overseas documents. Make sure the name, address and tax-residency information in the upload matches the correction requested by the AMC. Save the submission acknowledgment, upload receipt and any transaction or service-request number.

Some cases require a signed form, certified copies or a registrar submission. Bank of India Mutual Fund describes an offline route through its branch or its registrar’s branch, including KFintech for that AMC-specific process. This example does not establish a universal route for every fund.
Ask your AMC or registrar:
- which form version is current;
- whether an NRI may submit through an overseas office, courier or authorized representative;
- which documents require notarization, consular attestation, apostille or other certification;
- whether originals or self-attested copies are needed;
- where the documents must be delivered; and
- how the submission will be acknowledged.
Keep a complete scan of everything sent and the courier or branch receipt. Never mail irreplaceable originals unless the recipient expressly requires them and provides a secure return process.
6. Complete any requested verification
The AMC or KRA may request in-person verification (IPV), video or another due-diligence step. Follow the precise instruction rather than substituting a document you believe is equivalent. The SEBI-hosted application instructions identify IPV as a relevant process element for new investors and refer to KRA acknowledgment as part of the application process.
7. Confirm propagation before submitting a new investment
Recheck the KRA status after the update has been processed. Then ask the AMC whether its application system reflects the corrected record. A KRA change and an AMC’s internal refresh are related but may not be simultaneous. Submit a new investment application only after the responsible AMC or registrar confirms that the KYC issue is cleared or tells you exactly which additional step remains.

NRI-specific information to verify
Overseas address
Use the current overseas residential or correspondence address requested by the AMC. If the application uses an Indian address while the KYC record uses an overseas address, ask whether both addresses are permitted and which one must be designated as residential, correspondence or permanent. Do not infer the required format from another fund’s form.
Tax residence and FATCA/CRS
The SEBI-hosted common application instructions discuss FATCA diligence, collection of US or non-US status information and potential reporting duties. They also state that investors should update the fund or AMC when FATCA-related information changes. An NRI should therefore verify tax-residency country, tax identification number where requested, US status and related declarations before resubmission.
These form instructions are not a complete universal NRI checklist. Requirements can vary by AMC, country of residence, account type and the specific discrepancy. Ask the fund which supporting documents it accepts for your jurisdiction.
Document certification from abroad
Certification rules can differ by AMC and case. Confirm whether the fund accepts notarization, consular certification, apostille, an authorized intermediary or a digital verification method. A document can be genuine yet rejected if it was certified in a format the receiving channel does not accept.
Choosing an online, AMC or registrar route
The appropriate channel depends on who owns the correction and whether your documents can be verified remotely.

How the status can affect an investment
Bank of India Mutual Fund explains that a “KYC Registered” status can restrict new investments with another AMC unless the investor submits KYC documents to each new AMC. It describes “KYC On hold” as requiring remediation before transacting. Those statements describe that AMC’s explanation of the validation framework, not a guarantee that every NRI’s transaction will be treated identically.
Ask the fund whether your issue affects:
- only the rejected application;
- new investments with that AMC;
- new investments with another AMC;
- additional purchases in an existing folio; or
- redemptions, switches or other servicing transactions.
Do not assume that an existing folio proves that a new application will pass. A new AMC relationship can trigger validation of information that an older folio accepted under earlier requirements.
What to do if the correction is still rejected
- Request the exact rejection code or failed field from the AMC or registrar.
- Ask whether the correction belongs with the KRA, the AMC, the registrar or more than one party.
- Provide the prior submission acknowledgment and a concise timeline of what was changed.
- Ask whether another KRA holds a conflicting PAN record or whether an old record must be completed.
- Escalate through the AMC’s published grievance channel if the service desk does not identify the problem.
- Retain copies of every reply and document before pursuing any further investment application.
Escalation cannot replace the requested KYC evidence. Its purpose is to obtain a clear decision about the record owner, failed field and acceptable remedy.

August 2026 SEBI NRI KYC announcement
SEBI published a press release on August 14, 2026 titled Relaxations in Know Your Client (KYC) norms for individual Persons Resident Outside India (i.e. Non-Resident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India and foreign nationals). The title signals a policy change, but the operative details—eligibility, documents, implementation dates and whether any change applies to an already rejected application—must be confirmed in the applicable SEBI circular and the AMC’s current instructions.
Do not rely on the press-release title alone to bypass a current KRA or AMC request. Ask the fund whether the announced relaxation is implemented for your application and which document standard it is applying.
Records to keep until the application succeeds
- the original application and rejection notice;
- AMC, registrar and KRA correspondence;
- KRA status screenshots showing dates;
- submitted forms and every supporting document;
- upload receipts, courier records and branch acknowledgments;
- IPV or other verification confirmations;
- the corrected KRA status; and
- the AMC’s confirmation that its application system has refreshed.
The 14-digit CKYC number mentioned in the July 2024 application instructions is a process identifier, not evidence that an application has been approved. Use it to help the responsible intermediary locate the record when requested.
