If your business address changes in India, update the registration on the GST common portal by filing FORM GST REG-14 with proof for the new premises. A change to the principal place of business (PPoB) is a core amendment: an ordinary Rule 9 registration is reviewed by a proper officer, while a registration obtained under Rule 14A is automatically processed by the system under the Government of India’s 9 October 2026 FAQ. The portal’s non-core amendment application cannot be used to change either a principal or additional place-of-business address.
First identify which GST address is changing
This procedure concerns an Indian Goods and Services Tax registration. GST systems in other countries have different rules. In Indian GST terminology, the address where the business is primarily carried on is the principal place of business (PPoB). The GST Portal describes it as the primary location in the state where the taxpayer conducts business, generally where books and records are kept or management is located. Other declared premises are additional places of business.

The Government of India’s current FAQ specifically answers how a normal taxpayer registered under Rule 9 of the CGST Rules, 2017 can change its PPoB. A move involving an additional place is still a registration-particular amendment, but the FAQ passage does not provide a separate workflow for every additional-place scenario. Use the same official portal and form instructions, and verify the exact requirement shown for your application.
- Principal place: the main registered business location whose address appears in the PPoB field.
- Additional place: another premises declared on the same GST registration.
- Different state: do not assume that an inter-state move can be completed by editing the existing registration. The cited official material does not settle that question; check current CBIC or GST Portal guidance before filing.
The GST Portal’s registration guidance explains the meaning of the principal place: Apply for Registration: Normal Taxpayer.

What you need before opening the application
Confirm the registration category
Check whether the registration was obtained under ordinary Rule 9 or under Rule 14A. This determines whether the principal-place amendment goes to a proper officer or through automatic system processing. It is not a choice you make for an existing registration; the category already attached to the registration controls the route.
Collect evidence for the new premises
FORM GST REG-14 must include the required proof of the new principal place of business. The official FAQ directs applicants to the proof list attached to FORM GST REG-01. Because the acceptable document depends on the premises and the applicant’s circumstances, do not rely on a one-size-fits-all list copied from an unrelated application. Open the official list and match the evidence to the new property before submitting.
The FAQ’s instruction is: “You need to submit an application on the common portal in FORM GST REG-14 along with the required documents as proof of the Principal Place of Business, as specified in the list attached to FORM GST REG-01.” Read the complete FAQ from the Press Information Bureau, Government of India, posted 9 October 2026.

Have the complete new address ready exactly as it should appear in the registration: building or unit, street, locality, city, district, state, postal code and any other fields the portal requests. Check that the address in the form and the attached proof describe the same premises. Inconsistent spelling, missing unit numbers or an unexplained difference between documents can lead to a discrepancy notice and delay.
Make readable electronic copies
Scan or photograph the selected proof so every page, seal, signature and address line is legible. Keep the original documents available in case the officer asks for clarification. The official material establishes that proof is required, but it does not prescribe one universal file type or size in the passage cited here; follow the upload limits displayed by the portal at the time of filing.
Use a pre-submission checklist
- Confirm the GSTIN, legal name and registration category shown in the portal.
- Decide whether the transaction is a replacement of the PPoB or an addition of another premises.
- Copy the address from the selected proof and check every field, including the unit or floor number and postal code.
- Ensure the proof relates to the new premises, not the vacated location.
- Keep a dated copy of the files and information you submit so you can reproduce the application if a notice is issued.
This preparation is especially useful where a business has several offices, warehouses or branches. It reduces the risk of accidentally replacing the PPoB when the intention was only to add an additional place, or leaving an old address in one of the registration fields.

How to file FORM GST REG-14
- Sign in to the GST common portal. Use the credentials for the registration whose premises have moved. Verify the legal name and GSTIN shown before starting an amendment.
- Open the registration amendment application. Select the amendment option that leads to FORM GST REG-14. The application is for changing registration particulars; do not select the portal’s non-core amendment application for an address.
- Choose the place-of-business section. Identify whether the change is to the principal place or an additional place. Enter the new premises details in the relevant address fields.
- Attach the matching proof. Upload the document or documents required for the premises under the proof list attached to FORM GST REG-01. Use the document category offered by the application and make sure the uploaded copy is readable.
- Review before submission. Compare the typed address with the proof, check that the principal-place designation is correct, and confirm that no old address remains in a field that should change.
- Submit FORM GST REG-14. Complete the portal’s authentication and submission steps. Save the acknowledgement or application reference number and a copy of the submitted form and attachments.
- Monitor the application. Check the portal for status updates and notices. If the proper officer raises a discrepancy, respond through the prescribed portal workflow within the deadline stated below.
The exact screen arrangement can change, but the legal filing route remains FORM GST REG-14. The official GST Portal guidance also makes clear that address fields are not handled through the non-core application: Non-Core Fields.

Which processing route applies?
The following distinction comes from the Government of India FAQ. Both routes require proof for the new principal place; the difference is how the submitted amendment is processed.
| Registration category | Principal-place address amendment | Evidence | If a discrepancy is raised |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary registration under Rule 9 | Reviewed and approved by the proper officer when the application is in order. | Required proof specified through the list attached to FORM GST REG-01. | Reply to the show-cause or discrepancy notice within 7 working days from issuance, then await the officer’s action. |
| Registration obtained under Rule 14A | The 9 October 2026 FAQ says the system automatically processes the principal-place amendment without officer approval. | Proof for the new principal place is still required. | If the portal or authorities request information, follow the notice and deadline displayed for that application. |
Rule 14A is therefore a processing distinction, not an alternative that an existing taxpayer can elect after moving. If you do not know which rule applies to your registration, check your registration records or obtain confirmation before relying on an automatic route.
Deadlines: what the official sources actually say
Ordinary Rule 9 principal-place amendment
The 9 October 2026 PIB FAQ says that, where there is no discrepancy, the proper officer approves the application within 15 days from the date of application. It also says that if the officer identifies a discrepancy, a show-cause notice is issued within 15 days from the application.
After a notice is issued, the applicant must reply within 7 working days from issuance of the notice. After receiving the reply, the officer is to take action within 7 working days. These are the time periods stated in that FAQ; do not silently change “days” into “working days” for the two 15-day periods.

CBIC’s registration-rules page describes a general requirement to apply within 15 days of the change and refers to officer approval within 15 working days for specified core amendments. Because the newer PIB FAQ gives the current principal-place sequence and a Rule 14A exception, apply each statement to the situation and wording for which it is provided rather than combining the numbers into one deadline. Review the CBIC Goods & Service Tax: Registration Rules page alongside the FAQ.
Rank #3
| Event | Period stated by the cited source | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Submit the amendment after the address changes | Within 15 days of the change in the CBIC general registration-rules description. | File promptly; do not wait for the portal to generate a reminder. |
| No discrepancy on an ordinary Rule 9 PPoB amendment | Approval within 15 days from application, according to the PIB FAQ. | Count from the application date shown in your acknowledgement. |
| Discrepancy identified | Notice within 15 days from application, according to the PIB FAQ. | Read the notice carefully and prepare a targeted response. |
| Taxpayer reply to notice | 7 working days from issuance of the notice. | Submit through the portal before the deadline displayed for the notice. |
| Officer action after reply | 7 working days after receiving the reply, according to the PIB FAQ. | Retain the submission receipt and monitor status. |
Keep the application acknowledgement, because it establishes the filing date from which the relevant period is measured. Keep the notice and your reply together as well; the reply date affects the officer-action period and provides a clear record if you need portal support.
Why the non-core amendment path is wrong for an address
The GST Portal’s non-core fields guide expressly states that the principal-place and additional-place address fields cannot be amended in the non-core application. An address change must therefore be handled as the relevant registration amendment through FORM GST REG-14. Trying the non-core route can leave the address unchanged and may force you to start the correct application again.
Use the non-core guide as a field-classification check, not as a substitute for the form: GST Portal Non-Core Fields.

A notice means the application needs clarification or correction; it is not proof that the move itself is prohibited. Start by reading exactly which address field, document or fact the officer has questioned.
- Record the notice date and deadline. The PIB FAQ gives 7 working days from issuance for the applicant’s reply.
- Match each objection to evidence. If the issue is an incomplete address, explain the corrected field. If it is proof, provide the document or clarification requested, using the official premises-proof requirements.
- Keep the response narrow and consistent. Do not introduce a different premises or change the principal-place designation unless that is what the application requires.
- Submit through the application’s response workflow. Save the response acknowledgement and uploaded files.
- Monitor the next decision. The FAQ says the officer is to act within 7 working days after receiving the reply.
If the portal rejects an upload because of a technical limit, correct the file to meet the on-screen requirement without altering the underlying evidence. If the issue is substantive or you are unsure whether the premises qualifies, seek professional tax advice rather than submitting contradictory documents.
Common situations and how to approach them
Moving the main office within the same state
This is the clearest PPoB amendment case. File FORM GST REG-14, provide the proof applicable to the new premises, and use the Rule 9 or Rule 14A processing route attached to your registration.

Adding a warehouse or branch
A warehouse or branch may be an additional place of business rather than a replacement PPoB. Select the appropriate place-of-business section and verify the evidence requirements for that premises. The non-core application still cannot be used for the address fields.

Moving and changing the principal-place designation at the same time
Review every place listed in the registration before submitting. Clearly identify which premises is becoming the PPoB and which, if any, should remain an additional place. An unexplained change in designation can create a discrepancy even when the new address itself is genuine.
Moving to another state
The cited FAQ and CBIC page do not establish whether an inter-state move can be completed by amending the existing registration. Do not assume that the same GSTIN can simply be edited for a different state. Check the current official instructions for the destination state and registration consequences before filing.
Several premises changing together
If the business is relocating its main office and adding or retaining other premises, map each location to the correct field before opening REG-14. The PPoB should be the location that fits the portal’s definition of the primary business location; other declared sites should be treated as additional places. Attach proof that corresponds to each address the application asks you to support, rather than uploading unrelated documents in a single bundle.

- Download or save the approval, acknowledgement and amended registration details.
- Check that the principal or additional place displays the complete new address and the correct effective information.
- Update invoices, notices, website and internal records so they do not continue showing the old registered premises.
- Retain the proof submitted and any correspondence connected with the amendment.
- If the displayed details are wrong or the application remains unresolved after the stated period, use the portal’s support or grievance channel and quote the application reference.
These recordkeeping steps do not replace the amendment; the registered address changes only through the formal GST process. Preserve the old and new address details with the submission date so your accounting and compliance records show when the change was reported.

What proof should I upload for the new premises?
Use the proof list attached to FORM GST REG-01 and select the document or documents that fit the premises and your circumstances. The official FAQ does not make one document suitable for every property.
How long does a principal-place amendment take?
For an ordinary Rule 9 registration, the 9 October 2026 PIB FAQ says approval is within 15 days from application when there is no discrepancy. If a discrepancy is found, a notice is issued within 15 days; you have 7 working days to reply, and the officer has 7 working days after receiving the reply to act.
Is Rule 14A approval different?
Yes. The FAQ says a principal-place amendment for a registration obtained under Rule 14A is automatically processed by the system without officer approval. The registration category determines the route; an existing taxpayer cannot elect it after moving.
Can I use the non-core amendment application for an address?
No. The GST Portal expressly says principal-place and additional-place address fields cannot be amended through the non-core application. Use the registration amendment route and FORM GST REG-14.
Can I simply amend my GST registration after moving to another state?
Do not assume so. The cited official FAQ and CBIC registration-rules page do not settle the consequences of an inter-state move. Check current official guidance for the destination state before filing.
The Bottom Line
For an Indian GST address change, file FORM GST REG-14 with premises proof through the common portal. Ordinary Rule 9 PPoB changes require proper-officer processing; Rule 14A PPoB changes are automatically processed under the 9 October 2026 FAQ. File promptly, use the REG-01 proof list, avoid the non-core route, and answer any discrepancy notice within 7 working days.
