If your federal student-loan payment no longer reflects your current income or family situation, you can ask for an early recalculation instead of waiting for annual recertification. Sign in to StudentAid.gov, open the IDR Plan Request page, select Manage Your Plan, and report your current information. You can also submit the request and supporting documents through your loan servicer’s website. Annual recertification is still required every year, even when nothing has changed.
What to do when your income or family size changes
Income-driven repayment (IDR) payments are based partly on financial information and family size. A substantial income reduction, a new dependent, marriage, or another qualifying change may mean the payment currently shown on your account no longer represents your circumstances.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Federal Student Aid allows an enrolled borrower to request a recalculation before the regular annual deadline. The recalculation can reduce the payment, but a lower payment is not guaranteed. The result depends on the borrower’s IDR plan, income, family-size definition, marital and tax-filing circumstances, and loan eligibility.

When you submit the request, answer financial questions for your circumstances on the day you report them. Federal Student Aid’s FAQ states: “When asked about your finances—either on the online form or by your loan servicer—answer the questions based on your situation as of the day you’re reporting your information.”

How to submit an early IDR recalculation request
- Sign in to StudentAid.gov. Open the IDR Plan Request page.
- Select “Manage Your Plan.” Use that option to report that your current payment no longer reflects your income or family size.
- Answer the current form’s questions. Report income, family size, dependents, marital information, and other details requested for your plan.
- Attach supporting documentation when requested. You may instead submit the request and documents directly through your loan servicer’s website.
- Sign and submit the request. The information must describe your circumstances as of the submission date.
- Track the case. Check StudentAid.gov’s My Activity page for the request status.
There is no fee to complete the federal form or use the online process. Federal Student Aid says borrowers do not need to pay anyone to complete the request.
Which submission route should you use?
| Route | Where you start | What it is designed to do | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|---|
| StudentAid.gov online request | IDR Plan Request → Manage Your Plan | Report that the existing payment no longer reflects current income or family size and submit the federal request | Status in StudentAid.gov My Activity |
| Loan-servicer submission | Your servicer’s website | Send the request and supporting documents through the company handling your account | Servicer messages, processing notices, and the payment statement |
Official guidance describes both routes but does not establish that one is faster for every borrower. Use the route that gives you a complete submission and a record of what you sent. If you submit through the servicer, retain the confirmation and copies of every document.
What documents can support a current-income request?
The form may ask for documentation of taxable income. The evidence must be recent enough to represent the situation you are reporting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPaystubs and other income records
- Include the pay frequency, such as weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, or monthly.
- Provide at least one document for each source of taxable income.
- Most supporting documents must be dated no more than 90 days before you sign the IDR Plan Request.
- Copies are acceptable.
If you have several taxable-income sources, one paystub from only one employer will not document the complete picture. Include documentation for each source the form asks you to report.
Tax returns
A federal tax return is an exception to the 90-day freshness rule: it may be up to one year old when you submit the request. A tax return can therefore document earlier income, but it may not reflect a major change that occurred afterward. If your income has fallen or risen materially since the return, use current documentation and report the change rather than relying only on the older return.
How to describe the date and amount
Use the form’s instructions for the income period and amount it requests. Do not substitute an estimate for a document when the form asks for evidence. If a document is unclear, incomplete, or outside the allowed date range, processing may be delayed or the servicer may ask for another record.
How to report family size and dependents correctly
Family size for IDR purposes is not simply everyone who lives in your home. Use the definitions and exclusions in the live form. Federal forms can change, so read the wording shown when you apply.

Dependents claimed on a federal tax return
The form asks about dependents who receive more than half of their support from you and whom you claim on your federal tax return. Count only people who meet both parts of that description.
Other qualifying people in your household
The form also asks about other people who live with you and receive more than half of their support from you. It includes unborn children in this category. Your spouse and people already counted as dependents are excluded from this second group so they are not counted twice.
Borrower and spouse
The form says the borrower and spouse are included automatically when appropriate. Follow the current form rather than adding or removing either person based on an informal household count.
Why careful answers matter
Family size affects the payment calculation. A mistaken count can produce an incorrect payment or trigger a request for clarification. Before signing, review every person against the form’s support, residence, tax-claim, unborn-child, and duplicate-counting rules.

Income has changed significantly
An early request is useful when the income information previously used for your payment is no longer representative—for example, after a job loss, a substantial reduction in hours, or another major change. Submit current information and documents rather than waiting for the annual date.
Family size or dependents have changed
You can also report a new qualifying dependent or another family-size change before annual recertification. The form’s definitions control whether the person belongs in your IDR family size.
You married or your tax-filing situation changed
Marriage can change both family size and which income is considered. A borrower who marries while enrolled in IDR can recertify early to update the account rather than waiting for the next annual deadline.

A lower payment is not automatic
Submitting a change request does not guarantee a reduction. Your plan rules, documented income, family size, filing status, and loan eligibility determine the recalculated amount. Continue making required payments until the servicer confirms a new amount and effective date.

How marriage and tax filing status affect the information used
Federal Student Aid says most IDR plans generally use combined income for borrowers who file a joint federal return and individual income for borrowers who file separately, subject to plan-specific rules. The exact result can vary by plan and by the borrower’s circumstances.
Do not choose a federal tax-filing status solely to obtain a lower student-loan payment. Filing status can affect taxes, credits, benefits, and other household finances. Consider the overall financial effect and consult a qualified tax professional if you need individualized tax advice. Student-loan payment treatment is not a substitute for tax planning.
If you recently married, divorced, separated, or changed filing status, provide the current information the form requests. Do not assume that a previous year’s tax return automatically captures the change.
Annual recertification is separate from an early update
An early recalculation does not replace annual recertification. Federal Student Aid states: “You must recertify your income and family size information even if they haven’t changed since your last recertification.”

Submit before the deadline
Federal Student Aid recommends submitting about 90 days before the listed recertification date. Filing early gives the servicer time to process the information and resolve a document problem before the next payment is due.

What happens if you miss it?
Missing the deadline can cause your payment to stop being based on your income and family size and may increase. The exact consequence and calculation depend on your IDR plan and circumstances. Check the account notice and contact the servicer promptly if the date has passed.
How IDR autorecertification works
Eligible borrowers can authorize the Department of Education to retrieve federal tax information from the Internal Revenue Service for automatic annual recertification. Autorecertification is optional; it does not remove the need to keep your account information accurate.
Timing and notifications
- Under the current Federal Student Aid FAQ description, autorecertification begins 120 days before the recertification date.
- The borrower receives a system-generated email about the status.
- The recertification record appears in StudentAid.gov My Activity.
- If the payment changes, the servicer sends notice and an updated billing statement at least 21 days before the payment due date.
What data it uses
Autorecertification uses the latest IRS information on file. That may be appropriate when your current finances resemble the latest return, but it can be stale after a major income change.
When to report manually instead
If your income has changed significantly since the latest tax return, submit updated information through the change process rather than relying only on autorecertification. A current paystub or other permitted document can better represent the circumstances you are reporting now.
Check or change consent
- Open your StudentAid.gov Dashboard.
- Open the account menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Financial Information Access.
- If consent is absent, select Provide Consent, review the authorization, and choose Provide Approval.
- Use the same setting to revoke consent if you no longer want automatic IRS retrieval.
Interface labels can change. If the path differs, use the current account settings and the on-screen instructions rather than an older screenshot or saved bookmark.

Processing time
Federal Student Aid says most applications are processed within a few weeks, although some take longer. A servicer may use processing forbearance while the request is being reviewed, subject to the limit described in its current FAQ.
Check for a document request
Review both StudentAid.gov My Activity and your servicer’s communications. A missing pay frequency, an outdated document, or incomplete income coverage can hold up the recalculation.

Keep paying until the account changes
Continue following the current billing statement unless the servicer gives you different instructions. A submitted request is not the same as an approved new payment. Once approved, verify the new amount, effective date, and next due date.
If the payment is not what you expected
Compare the result with the information you submitted: taxable-income sources, document dates, family-size answers, marital status, filing status, and plan selection. Ask the servicer which item controlled the calculation and how to correct an error. Keep the confirmation, uploaded files, and notices for your records.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Waiting for annual recertification after a major change: use Manage Your Plan or the servicer’s submission route as soon as the payment no longer reflects your situation.
- Using an old paystub: most supporting documents must be dated within 90 days of signing.
- Documenting only one income source: include at least one item for each source of taxable income and state the pay frequency.
- Counting everyone in the household: apply the form’s support, residence, tax-claim, unborn-child, and duplicate-counting rules.
- Assuming marriage automatically changes the payment: report the new circumstances and let the applicable plan rules determine the result.
- Relying on an old tax return after a large income change: provide current information through the change process.
- Assuming an early request replaces annual recertification: keep the separate yearly deadline on your calendar.
- Stopping payments immediately after filing: wait for the servicer’s confirmed amount and effective date.
- Choosing a tax filing status only for loan-payment reasons: evaluate the entire tax and household-finance impact first.
A practical checklist before you submit
- Confirm that the existing payment no longer reflects your current income, family size, or both.
- Open the current IDR Plan Request and use Manage Your Plan, or access the form through your servicer.
- Prepare documentation for every taxable-income source.
- Check that most documents are no more than 90 days old when you sign; use the one-year exception only for a tax return.
- Record pay frequency and answer income questions for the submission date.
- Read the family-size definitions on the live form and avoid counting your spouse or another person twice.
- Review marriage and federal tax-filing information under the rules for your specific plan.
- Save copies of the signed request, documents, and confirmation.
- Monitor My Activity and servicer messages while processing is underway.
- Continue payments under the existing billing statement until a new amount is confirmed.
- Locate your annual recertification date under My Loans and plan to submit about 90 days early.
- If using autorecertification, check Financial Information Access consent and report major income changes manually.
Questions borrowers commonly ask
Can I update my information before my annual date?
Yes. You can request an early recalculation when your current payment no longer reflects your income or family size. Annual recertification remains mandatory afterward.
Recommended Free Tools
Will reporting a change always lower my payment?
No. A lower payment is possible but not guaranteed. The calculation depends on the plan and the complete information accepted for your account.
Do I have to submit a tax return?
No single document is required in every case. Paystubs and other permitted records may document current taxable income. If you use a tax return, it may be up to one year old at submission; most other supporting documents must be within 90 days of signing.
What if my income changed after the IRS data used for autorecertification?
Submit current information through the change process. Autorecertification uses the latest IRS data on file and may not reflect a newer job loss, raise, or reduction in hours.
Where can I see whether my request was received?
Check StudentAid.gov’s My Activity page, and review messages from your loan servicer. Keep the confirmation and copies of what you submitted.
