To change where most VA disability compensation, pension, education-benefit, or Foreign Medical Program (FMP) payments go, sign in to VA.gov with a verified ID.me or Login.gov account. Open Profile, choose Manage your direct deposit information, select the benefit, enter the new account type, routing number, and account number, and save. The online FMP option is limited to a U.S. bank account.

Start with the payment type, not the bank account
The most important first step is identifying which VA payment you want to redirect. VA does not keep every payment in one direct-deposit record. A change made for disability compensation, for example, does not automatically change travel reimbursement or a life-insurance payment.

For CHAMPVA, the Spina Bifida Health Care Benefits Program, and the Children of Women Vietnam Veterans health program, family members should follow the separate instructions for that program rather than changing a veteran’s general profile payment record.
What you need before changing a VA deposit
For the online workflow, gather the exact banking information for the account that will receive the selected benefit:
- A verified ID.me or Login.gov account. VA states that identity verification is required to change direct-deposit information.
- Account type. Select the type that matches the destination account.
- Routing number. Use the routing number supplied by the bank for electronic deposits.
- Account number. Copy the account number carefully from official bank records.
- The correct benefit category. Know whether you are changing disability compensation, pension, education benefits, or an FMP claim.
VA’s online instructions identify the account type, routing number, and account number. They do not say that a voided check is mandatory. A bank statement or the bank’s secure account information can help you verify the numbers, but enter only the information requested by VA.

Before you begin, decide whether the destination account is in the United States. A U.S. account can be entered for an FMP claim through the profile. An international FMP account requires Ask VA or the dedicated international route listed on VA’s current direct-deposit page.
How to change VA direct deposit online
- Sign in to VA.gov. Use a verified ID.me or Login.gov identity. If you have an account but have not completed verification, finish verification before attempting to edit payment information.
- Open your profile. Select your name in the VA.gov navigation menu, then select Profile.
- Find the direct-deposit area. Locate Direct deposit information and select Manage your direct deposit information.
- Identify the payment record. Review the listed benefit sections and choose the one that matches the payment you want to redirect. Do not assume that the first listed account controls every VA payment.
- Select Edit. Use the Edit control in the relevant section. If the payment is not listed, stop and use the separate system described below instead of editing an unrelated benefit.
- Enter the new details. Provide the destination account type, routing number, and account number exactly as supplied by the bank.
- Save. Select Save and read any confirmation displayed by VA. Make sure the page is still showing the benefit you intended to change.

Why verification matters
The verified sign-in is not optional for the online change. VA uses identity verification before allowing direct-deposit information to be edited. If the site allows you to view your profile but does not provide an edit control, first confirm that your ID.me or Login.gov identity is verified. If verification is complete, check whether the payment belongs to a separate VA system.
How to avoid changing the wrong record
Read the benefit label before selecting Edit. Disability compensation, pension, education benefits, and FMP claims can appear as distinct categories. A change to one category does not establish a new account for all other payments. If you receive more than one type of VA payment, review each payment’s handling system separately.

What to do when the payment is not listed
A missing benefit section often means the payment is maintained outside the general VA.gov profile. Match the payment to the correct route rather than submitting repeated profile changes.
Travel-pay reimbursement
Use the Beneficiary Travel Self Service System to set up or change direct deposit for travel reimbursement. This record is separate from the account used for disability compensation, pension, education benefits, or an FMP claim.

Caregiver stipend
Use the Financial Services Center’s customer engagement portal. VA identifies caregiver stipends as payments that require direct deposit, so a paper check is not the substitute route described for this benefit.
Healthcare copay refund
Use the same Financial Services Center customer engagement portal for healthcare copay refunds. A successful change to a compensation or pension record does not update the refund record.
Life-insurance benefit
Use Direct Deposit Enrollment/Change, VA Form 29-0309 for life-insurance benefits. The form is a separate process from the VA.gov profile workflow.
Family-member health programs
CHAMPVA, the Spina Bifida Health Care Benefits Program, and the Children of Women Vietnam Veterans health program have separate instructions for family members. Follow the instructions for the specific program and the person who receives that payment.

How to change an international FMP account
The profile route accepts an FMP direct-deposit change only when the destination is a U.S. bank account. If your FMP payment should go to an account outside the United States, do not try to force the international details into the profile form.
VA directs beneficiaries with an international FMP account to contact the agency through Ask VA. The general direct-deposit guidance also lists a dedicated international update phone route and weekday hours. Check the live Change Your Direct Deposit Information page for the current contact method and schedule before calling; contact routing and hours can change.
This geography distinction applies specifically to FMP direct deposit. It does not turn every international payment into a profile-managed payment, and it does not mean that a U.S. account for another benefit should be submitted through Ask VA.
Phone, regional-office, and paper alternatives
You do not have to use the online profile if you cannot access the internet, cannot complete online identity verification, or prefer assistance from VA.

When more than one route seems possible, compare four things: the payment type, the account’s location, your access to VA.gov, and whether you already have a bank account.
- Payment type: Disability compensation, pension, education benefits, and U.S.-bank FMP claims use the profile. Travel pay, caregiver stipends, copay refunds, life insurance, and certain family-member programs use separate systems.
- Account location: A U.S. bank account can be entered for an FMP claim in the profile. An international FMP account goes through Ask VA or the international contact route.
- Access: The online route needs verified ID.me or Login.gov access. Phone, a regional-office visit, or SF-1199a may be more suitable if you cannot use the website.
- Existing account: If you already have a destination account, submit its details through the system that owns the payment. If you do not have one, consider VBBP before trying to submit a change.
No single route updates every VA payment. Selecting the correct owner of the payment record is more important than selecting the most convenient channel.
What if you do not have a bank account?
VA’s Veterans Benefits Banking Program (VBBP) connects veterans and beneficiaries with participating banks and credit unions. VA says participating institutions may help a person qualify for an account. Contact a participating institution and mention VBBP when asking about an account for receiving VA benefits.
VBBP is a banking connection program; it does not change your VA payment by itself. After you open an account, obtain the account type, routing number, and account number, then submit those details through the route for the specific VA payment.

How to confirm that the change applies to the right payment
- Review the category before saving. Confirm that the selected section corresponds to the payment you receive.
- Check the saved information. Return to the direct-deposit area and verify that the account type and account details displayed are the ones you intended to submit.
- Review payment history. Use Review Your VA Payment History to monitor the payment record associated with your VA account.
- Keep a submission record. Note the date, benefit, destination account, and whether you used the profile, phone, regional office, form, or Ask VA.
- Contact the correct VA office if something does not match. If a payment record still shows the old account, use the current contact instructions for that benefit rather than changing an unrelated record.
Payment history can help you distinguish a payment-category problem from a banking-entry problem. If compensation changed but a travel reimbursement did not, that points to separate records rather than a failed compensation update.
VA listed the payment-history page as last updated September 22, 2026, and the direct-deposit change page as last updated August 4, 2026. Page labels, phone numbers, and hours may change, so confirm current details when you submit the request.
Common problems and the correct fix
The site will not let me edit direct deposit
Confirm that you signed in with a verified ID.me or Login.gov account. VA requires identity verification for the online change. If verification is complete, determine whether the payment belongs to travel pay, caregiver services, healthcare copay refunds, life insurance, or a family-member program with its own instructions.

I changed one payment, but another still uses the old account
VA payment categories can have separate records. Use Beneficiary Travel Self Service for travel reimbursement, the Financial Services Center portal for caregiver or copay payments, or Form 29-0309 for life-insurance benefits. Do not repeat a profile edit for a payment that is not profile-managed.
I entered an international account for an FMP payment
The standard profile route is limited to a U.S. bank account for FMP. Use Ask VA or the international contact route listed on VA’s current change page instead.
I do not have a voided check
VA’s online instructions identify the account type, routing number, and account number as the banking details to enter; they do not state that a voided check is required. Use official bank records to verify the numbers. If you cannot complete the online process, use the phone, regional-office, or SF-1199a route.
I do not have a bank account yet
Ask a participating institution in VBBP about opening an account. Once you have the account details, submit them through the system that handles the specific VA payment.
I am unsure which account VA is changing
Stop before selecting Save. Read the benefit heading, compare it with the payment you receive, and check the payment-history record. If the payment is not clearly identified, use VA’s current direct-deposit guidance or contact route rather than guessing.
I cannot use the website
