To change the bank account linked to your EPF, sign in to the official EPFO Unified Member Portal, go to Manage > KYC, select the bank-account option, enter the new account number and IFSC, save, and complete Aadhaar OTP authentication. The bank and NPCI then verify the account. Under EPFO’s 3 April 2025 procedure, employer approval is no longer required after that verification.
What the EPFO bank-account update does
Your bank details in the EPFO portal identify where an approved provident-fund claim can be paid. Updating the entry changes the account seeded against your Universal Account Number (UAN); it does not itself file a withdrawal, transfer, pension, or final-settlement claim.

The current flow combines three checks: your UAN login, Aadhaar-based one-time-password (OTP) authentication, and validation of the account by the bank and National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Entering an account number and IFSC is only the data-entry part. The new details become usable after the relevant verification succeeds.
2025 change: employer approval was removed
EPFO’s circular dated 3 April 2025 says, “there shall be no requirement of approval of Employer in the bank account seeding process henceforth.” This changed the older sequence in EPFO’s UAN and KYC FAQ, which described an employer-approval stage.
#1 Best Overall
| Point | Older guidance | Procedure described in the 3 April 2025 circular |
|---|---|---|
| Member submits bank details | Enter the account number and IFSC through Manage > KYC. | Enter the account number and IFSC through the portal’s KYC area. |
| Identity authentication | The older FAQ predates the revised authentication instruction. | Aadhaar OTP authentication is used when changing a seeded bank account. |
| Bank validation | Bank verification was part of the seeding process. | The bank/NPCI validates the account. |
| Employer action | Employer approval was expected after submission. | No employer approval is required after bank/NPCI verification. Requests that were waiting at the employer stage were to be auto-approved after successful bank/NPCI verification. |
| Claim images | Older instructions may mention a cheque leaf or attested passbook. | A member whose account is validated by the bank/NPCI does not need to upload those images when filing a claim. |
The labels and exact screen sequence can change as EPFO updates its portal. The durable path is the official member portal, the KYC section, accurate account and IFSC data, Aadhaar OTP authentication, and bank/NPCI validation. Follow the prompt shown in your live account if a button name differs from the FAQ.
What to have ready before you start
- An active bank account: EPFO’s FAQ recommends an account held in your own name or jointly with your spouse. A joint account with someone else may not meet that guidance.
- The exact account number: Copy it from bank-issued information rather than relying on a saved contact, an old cheque, or memory.
- The correct IFSC: Verify the code with your bank. A branch merger or account relocation can make an old IFSC invalid even when the account number has not changed.
- Access to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number: The revised process uses an Aadhaar OTP. If you cannot receive that OTP, the online change may not complete.
- A suitable account for a future benefit: EPFO’s FAQ cautions against an account with a deposit cap below the withdrawal benefit. Confirm that the account can receive the amount you may claim.
Do not close the old account until any payment already in progress has been resolved and the new account shows as successfully validated. The portal does not promise an instant switch for every pending transaction.
Step-by-step: change the bank account in the Unified Member Portal
1. Open the official EPFO member portal
Use the EPFO Unified Member Portal rather than a link sent by a caller, text message, email, or social-media account. Sign in with your UAN credentials. Check that the page is the official EPFO login page before entering your password or any personal information.

After signing in, open Manage and select KYC. This is the route identified in EPFO’s UAN and KYC FAQ. If the portal’s visual design has changed, look for the account-maintenance or KYC area instead of assuming that a third-party guide’s screenshots are current.
3. Select the bank-account entry
Choose the bank option in the KYC form. The form may show existing seeded details or a field for adding a new account. If an old account is already listed, read the status carefully before attempting another submission; a pending or verified entry may be handled differently from a blank entry.
4. Enter the account number and IFSC
Type the new account number exactly as issued by the bank, then enter the matching IFSC. Check every digit and letter before saving. Do not substitute a debit-card number, customer ID, branch telephone number, or other banking identifier for the account number.
Use the IFSC for the branch that holds the account according to the bank’s current records. If the bank has recently merged branches or changed codes, ask the bank for the current IFSC rather than using a code copied from an old document.

5. Save the request
Submit the KYC entry using the portal’s save or submit control. Keep any on-screen acknowledgement or reference number. A saved form is not the same as a verified bank account; check the status area after the authentication and validation stages.
6. Complete Aadhaar OTP authentication
When prompted, complete the Aadhaar OTP authentication described in EPFO’s 2025 instruction for changing a seeded bank account. Enter the OTP only in the official EPFO or Aadhaar authentication screen. Never read an OTP to a person who telephones you or asks for it in a message.
If an OTP does not arrive, wait for the portal’s permitted retry period and use the current resend option. Confirm that the mobile number registered with Aadhaar can receive messages and that your phone has service. Repeatedly requesting codes can cause older codes to expire, so use the newest valid OTP.
7. Wait for bank/NPCI verification
The bank and NPCI must validate the submitted account. Under the revised procedure, you do not send the request to your employer for approval after this verification. The 2025 circular also states that requests previously pending at the employer stage would be auto-approved following successful bank/NPCI verification.

How long can the update take?
EPFO’s 2025 press release reported historical averages of about three days for banks to complete verification and about 13 days for employers to approve afterward. The 13-day figure describes the former employer step, which the 3 April 2025 circular removed; it is not a current waiting-time target.
The release also described the scale that motivated the change: 1.3 crore bank-seeding requests in financial year 2024–25, around 36,000 requests per day, 7.74 crore members contributing monthly, 4.83 crore members with bank accounts seeded, and 14.95 lakh approvals pending with employers. These are EPFO figures reported in 2025, not a promise about the status of an individual request.

Neither the circular nor the FAQ guarantees a completion time for every member. Bank holidays, a mismatch in account information, an invalid IFSC, an Aadhaar-authentication problem, or a system outage can delay validation. Continue checking the live portal for the status rather than treating a historical average as a deadline.
What the status means and what to do next
Request saved or submitted
This normally means the portal accepted the data for processing. Confirm that Aadhaar OTP authentication was completed and look for a subsequent bank or NPCI validation result.
Verification pending
Allow the bank/NPCI check to run. Re-entering the same request repeatedly can make it harder to identify which entry is current. If the status remains unchanged beyond a reasonable period, use EPFO’s official member-support channels and provide the UAN, submission reference, and the exact status shown, while withholding your password and OTP.
Rejected or failed
Compare the account number and IFSC with the bank’s current records. A spelling or digit error, an account that is closed or inactive, a branch-code mismatch, or an account-holder mismatch can prevent validation. Correct the source information before submitting again.
Verified or seeded
A verified status indicates that the account has passed the relevant validation. Keep the account active and monitor it if you file a claim. If a claim form still asks for a document or displays an unexpected bank status, follow the instructions in that claim screen or contact EPFO; do not upload documents merely because an old web page mentions them.
Cheque leaves and passbook images: when they matter
The 2025 circular says that a member whose bank account has been validated by the bank/NPCI does not need to upload an image of a cheque leaf or an attested passbook image when filing a claim. This is a claim-document rule. It is not an instruction to upload either image in order to change bank KYC.
If a live claim screen asks for an image despite a validated account, read the reason shown and use EPFO’s official support route for clarification. Do not send a cheque image, passbook, Aadhaar copy, or bank statement to an unsolicited caller who offers to “complete” the update.

Pending claims and changing bank details
EPFO’s older FAQ says bank details cannot be changed while an EPFO claim is pending. The 3 April 2025 circular changes the approval flow and Aadhaar authentication requirements but does not expressly explain how every pending-claim situation is handled.
Therefore, if a withdrawal, transfer, pension, or other EPFO claim is already pending, check the current portal message before attempting to replace the bank account. If the portal blocks the change or presents conflicting instructions, contact EPFO through its official help channels and ask how the pending claim affects the bank-details update. Do not treat the older FAQ’s restriction as a guaranteed description of every current screen, but do not assume the restriction has disappeared either.

Common problems and practical fixes
The IFSC is rejected
- Confirm that you used the bank’s current IFSC, not an obsolete code from an old passbook or cheque.
- Make sure the account number and IFSC belong to the same bank and branch record.
- Ask the bank whether the account is active and eligible to receive electronic credits.
The account is not validated
- Check for a digit transposition or omitted zero in the account number.
- Confirm that the account is held by you individually or jointly with your spouse, consistent with EPFO’s FAQ guidance.
- Verify that the account has not been closed, frozen, or restricted.
- Wait for bank/NPCI processing before submitting multiple replacement requests.
The Aadhaar OTP cannot be completed
- Use the mobile device that can receive the Aadhaar OTP and enter the newest code before it expires.
- Check whether the Aadhaar-linked mobile number is still active.
- If authentication repeatedly fails, resolve the Aadhaar or mobile-number issue through the official channel before trying the EPFO form again.
The portal still shows employer approval
The older FAQ and cached help pages may still display the previous workflow. The 3 April 2025 circular removed employer approval from the bank-seeding process after bank/NPCI verification. Follow the current portal status and authentication prompts. If a request is genuinely stuck at an employer stage, retain its reference details and ask EPFO to reconcile the status rather than paying an agent to intervene.
You cannot find the KYC menu
Sign out and return through the official Unified Member Portal, then look under Manage. A mobile layout, maintenance window, or portal redesign can move the visual location while preserving the KYC function. Avoid unofficial portals that imitate the EPFO login page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect your UAN, Aadhaar and banking information
EPFO’s member portal warns that it never requests personal information such as Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details over the phone. Treat an unsolicited call, text, email, or messaging-app request as suspicious, even if the sender knows your name or UAN.
- Never disclose your UAN password, Aadhaar number, bank account number, card PIN, internet-banking password, or OTP to a caller.
- Do not pay anyone who claims to be able to expedite bank verification or employer removal.
- Type the official EPFO address yourself or use a trusted bookmark instead of clicking a login link in a message.
- Check the browser address and security indicators before entering credentials.
- Keep screenshots or reference numbers for your own records, but redact account numbers and Aadhaar details before sharing an image for support.
If you have already disclosed credentials or an OTP, change the affected password immediately, contact your bank about the account, and report the incident through official channels.

- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Where the two documents differ, the dated 3 April 2025 circular controls the revised process. Where neither document answers the specific state of your live claim or portal screen, rely on the message in your account and EPFO’s official support rather than an old screenshot or an agent’s promise.
Final checklist
- Use the official Unified Member Portal and sign in with your own UAN credentials.
- Open Manage > KYC and choose the bank-account entry.
- Enter the active account number and current IFSC exactly as the bank records them.
- Save the request and complete Aadhaar OTP authentication.
- Wait for bank/NPCI verification; do not seek employer approval after successful verification.
- Check the final status before relying on the account for a claim.
- Do not upload cheque-leaf or attested-passbook images solely to change KYC; validated accounts do not require those images when filing a claim under the 2025 circular.
- Keep UAN, Aadhaar, bank details and OTPs private.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update my EPFO bank account without employer approval?
Yes. Under EPFO’s circular dated 3 April 2025, employer approval is no longer required after Aadhaar OTP authentication and bank/NPCI verification. The older FAQ may still describe the former employer step.
Do I need to upload a cancelled cheque or passbook image to change bank KYC?
No upload is stated as a requirement for changing KYC. The 2025 circular says a bank/NPCI-validated account does not require a cheque-leaf or attested-passbook image when you file a claim.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How quickly will the new account be usable?
There is no guaranteed individual turnaround. EPFO reported a historical average of about three days for bank verification in 2025, but actual processing can vary.
Can I change bank details while an EPFO claim is pending?
The older EPFO FAQ says bank details cannot be changed while a claim is pending. Because the 2025 circular does not expressly address every pending-claim case, check the live portal or contact EPFO for the current handling.
What if my bank account update is rejected?
Recheck the account number, current IFSC, account activity, and account-holder details with your bank. Correct any mismatch and submit through the official portal again; never give your OTP or password to an intermediary.
