The correct route depends on your benefit type, whether the address is in the United States, and whether your bank participates in Social Security’s Automated Enrollment process. If the online option is unavailable, Social Security Administration (SSA) phone, local-office, bank-assisted, or paper-form routes are available for the relevant task.
Choose the record you need to change
Address, payment instructions, and tax withholding are separate records. Changing one does not automatically change the others, so use the workflow for each item you need to update.

How to change your Social Security mailing address
Who can use the online address service
SSA says recipients of retirement, survivors, or disability benefits and people enrolled in Medicare can change a U.S. mailing address through the My Profile tab of a personal my Social Security account. U.S. citizens can also change an international address online.
The online service is not currently available for changing an address for people receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. SSI recipients can use My Profile to view their address and payment method and can update a phone number, but the address change itself requires another route.
Recommended Free Tools
People without a U.S. mailing address, as well as anyone who cannot complete the online change, should use SSA’s phone or local-office route.
Online steps for an eligible recipient
- Open the official Social Security Administration website and sign in to your personal my Social Security account.
- Open My Profile.
- Select the address information and enter the complete new mailing address.
- Review every line, including the postal code and country, then submit the change using the confirmation instructions shown on screen.
- Keep the confirmation details for your records and check the profile again later to make sure the new address appears correctly.
The online path changes the mailing address held for the eligible Social Security or Medicare record. It is not a general change-of-address request for banks, the Internal Revenue Service, insurers, or other agencies; notify those organizations separately when their records also need updating.

How to change the bank account receiving your benefits
Start with your personal account when available
SSA describes signing in to a personal my Social Security account as the fastest way to change bank information, but availability depends on the benefit type. Do not assume that every recipient can complete a direct-deposit change online. If the account does not offer the change for your record, follow the next-step instructions SSA provides rather than repeatedly submitting the same request.
- Sign in through the official Social Security Administration website.
- Open the benefit or payment-information area that contains direct-deposit settings.
- Enter the new bank account and routing information exactly as supplied by the financial institution.
- Review the account type and all digits before submitting the request.
- Save the confirmation and monitor the payment information in your account for the updated instructions.
The screen labels and eligibility checks can vary by benefit type. If the direct-deposit option is missing, that absence is a signal to use SSA’s alternative process, not evidence that the payment record cannot be changed.
Ask your bank about Automated Enrollment
Some banks participate in SSA’s Automated Enrollment (ENR) process. Through ENR, the bank can send updated direct-deposit information directly to Social Security. SSA’s wording is: “Your bank can send your updated direct deposit information directly to Social Security—no call or office visit required.”

Participation is not universal. Ask the bank’s benefits or deposit-services staff whether it offers ENR for Social Security payments and what information or authorization it requires. If the bank does not participate, use the personal-account route when eligible or contact SSA for the next available method.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use an SSA call or appointment when online and bank-assisted routes do not work
SSA’s direct-deposit instructions also describe calling or making an appointment. This route is appropriate when your benefit type is excluded from online changes, your bank does not offer ENR, or the account change needs representative assistance. Use the official SSA contact instructions to arrange the call or appointment and follow the identity-verification steps provided.
If you do not have a bank account
Federal benefit payments are generally made electronically. SSA describes two principal electronic choices: deposit to an existing bank account or payment through the Direct Express debit card. The card option does not require a bank account. Treasury waiver exceptions are rare; consult SSA’s current direct-deposit information for the rules that apply to your circumstances.
If you want to open a bank account, SSA points consumers to account-opening information from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Compare account features and affordability before choosing an account. Opening an account is separate from submitting its payment instructions to SSA, so complete the direct-deposit update through an eligible SSA, ENR, or representative channel after the account is available.
How to start, change, or stop federal tax withholding
Use the Voluntary Tax Withholding service online
Social Security’s Voluntary Tax Withholding (VTW) service lets a beneficiary check, start, change, or stop a withholding request through a personal my Social Security account. SSA states that withheld amounts are credited toward federal taxes and that the service can help reduce the possibility of owing federal tax at year-end.

This is voluntary withholding from your Social Security benefits. It is not a change to your general tax status, filing status, tax return, or the amount of tax you ultimately owe. For a tax calculation or advice about the appropriate withholding choice, consult the Internal Revenue Service or a qualified tax professional.
- Sign in to or create a personal my Social Security account through the official SSA website.
- Open the Voluntary Tax Withholding section.
- Review the current request, if one exists.
- Choose whether to start, change, or stop the request and enter the withholding selection requested by the service.
- Submit the request and retain the confirmation for your tax records.
SSA summarizes the online capability this way: “You can sign in to or create a personal my Social Security account to check, start, change, or stop your Voluntary Tax Withholding (VTW) request rate online.”
Use IRS Form W-4V when you need a paper route
The paper alternative is IRS Form W-4V, Voluntary Withholding Request. Complete the form and provide it to a local Social Security Administration office. To change the rate later, file a new W-4V rather than altering an old submission.
The W-4V instructions surfaced for this procedure carry a February 2018 revision date. Confirm with the IRS or SSA that you are using the current form before printing or submitting it, because a newer revision may have replaced that version. The SSA forms index identifies IRS W-4V as the voluntary-withholding request form.
Form W-4V concerns withholding from benefits only. It does not instruct the IRS to amend a return, change estimated-tax payments, or determine whether your benefits are taxable.

Which route should you use?
Use the following decision sequence when more than one record needs attention.
- Identify the record. Choose mailing address, direct-deposit account, or voluntary federal withholding. Treat each as a separate update.
- Check benefit and address eligibility. Retirement, survivors, disability, and Medicare recipients generally have the online U.S.-address path. SSI address changes are not currently available online, and international-address eligibility is specifically stated for U.S. citizens.
- Try the personal account for supported services. The account is the first online route for an eligible address, direct-deposit, or VTW change.
- For direct deposit, check the bank route. If the account cannot complete the change, ask whether the bank participates in ENR.
- Switch to SSA assistance when needed. Use the phone or local-office process for an ineligible address change, an unsupported direct-deposit change, or an online service that cannot be completed.
- Use W-4V for paper withholding. Submit a current form to a local SSA office when you do not use the online VTW service.
The best channel can differ even for the same beneficiary. For example, a retirement beneficiary might update a U.S. address in My Profile, use a participating bank for a deposit change, and use the online VTW service for withholding. Those are three independent transactions.
Troubleshooting common problems
The address option is missing
Check whether you receive SSI, lack a U.S. mailing address, or are trying to update a record that SSA does not currently support online. SSI recipients can view address and payment information in My Profile, but SSA says the address change itself is not currently online. Use the SSA phone or local-office route instead.
The direct-deposit option is unavailable
Online availability varies by benefit type. Read the instructions displayed in your account, then ask your bank about ENR. If the bank does not participate, contact SSA for an appointment or phone-based next step.
Your bank says it cannot submit ENR
ENR is optional for banks. A refusal does not prevent every other update route; it means you should use the personal account if eligible or work directly with SSA.
You need to change withholding but cannot find the form online
Use the VTW section of your personal account, or obtain the current IRS Form W-4V through official IRS or SSA channels. Because the surfaced paper instructions are dated February 2018, verify the revision before filing. Provide the completed form to a local SSA office.
You changed one item but another record is still old
Address, bank, and withholding records are separate. Return to the specific My Profile, payment, or VTW area for the remaining change, or use the alternative channel for that record. A completed address update does not submit a direct-deposit or withholding request.
Quick Recap
What to verify after submitting a change
- Save the online confirmation, bank confirmation, or SSA appointment details.
- Reopen the relevant account section and check that the submitted address, payment instructions, or VTW request is displayed accurately.
- For a bank change, verify every routing and account digit against information supplied by the bank.
- For withholding, retain the request confirmation with your tax records and remember that withholding is separate from your tax return.
- If the service tells you to contact SSA, follow that instruction rather than assuming the request was completed.
Key limits to remember
- Online address eligibility depends on benefit type and, for international addresses, citizenship and the service’s current rules.
- Online direct-deposit availability depends on benefit type; bank ENR participation varies by institution.
- Direct Express is an electronic-payment option for people who do not have a bank account, while rare Treasury waiver exceptions are handled under current federal rules.
- Voluntary withholding changes the amount withheld from benefits, not your underlying tax liability or filing obligations.
- SSA service availability and eligible benefit categories can change, so check the current official instructions immediately before submitting a request.
