For most people receiving Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, the fastest standard route is to sign in to a personal my Social Security account and change the bank information in My Profile. The process is different for Supplemental Security Income (SSI): SSA says SSI recipients cannot currently use the same online direct-deposit change service and should call Social Security or contact an office instead.
You can also ask your bank whether it offers SSA Automated Enrollment, which lets the bank send updated details to Social Security. A telephone change is available, but current SSA identity rules require a one-time code generated online before you call. No reviewed SSA instruction promises a universal processing interval or identifies the first payment that will reach the new account, so confirm the effective date with SSA or your bank.

Choose the route that matches your benefit
Your benefit type and access to online identity verification determine which update method is available. Use this table before changing anything:
| Benefit or situation | Available route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Social Security retirement | Personal my Social Security account; bank Automated Enrollment; telephone or office help when required | SSA describes the online method as the fastest way to make changes. |
| Social Security survivors benefits | Personal my Social Security account; bank Automated Enrollment; telephone or office help when required | Follow the identity checks shown for your account. |
| Social Security disability benefits | Personal my Social Security account; bank Automated Enrollment; telephone or office help when required | The account may direct you to additional steps based on your circumstances. |
| Supplemental Security Income (SSI) | Call SSA or contact a local office; ask your bank about enrollment as an alternative | SSA says the standard online bank-change service is not currently available for SSI recipients. You can still use My Profile to view payment method and update a phone number. |
| Representative payee | Representative Payee Portal | SSA says representative payees can manage a beneficiary’s direct deposit through that portal. |
If you receive more than one type of benefit, identify which payment you are changing before you start. A route that works for a retirement or disability payment should not be assumed to work for an SSI payment.

How to change Social Security direct deposit online
Eligible retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries can usually complete the change through a personal my Social Security account. SSA identifies Login.gov and ID.me as sign-in options. Its account guidance says Login.gov is suited to most users in the United States, while ID.me can be used by people inside or outside the United States; setup and verification requirements differ.
- Sign in to your personal account. Use your existing Login.gov or ID.me credentials, or create an account if you do not have one. Do not use another person’s account to change your payment information.
- Open My Profile. The account’s services for current beneficiaries include direct-deposit management. Select the bank-information or direct-deposit change option presented for your benefit.
- Enter the new account details carefully. Have the financial institution’s routing number and your account number available. Select whether the account is checking or savings when the form asks.
- Review the change before submitting. Compare every digit with information supplied by your bank. A single incorrect number can send a payment to the wrong destination or delay correction.
- Submit and save the confirmation. Keep any confirmation number, screen, or message shown by SSA. Your account may let you choose when certain profile changes take effect, but the reviewed SSA instructions do not state a universal interval or guarantee which payment will first use the new account.
SSA calls this online route “the fastest way to make changes.” Fastest does not mean immediate: check your account, bank, or SSA representative for the effective date that applies to your case, and do not close the old account until you know when the final payment has cleared.
Can your bank update the information for you?
Ask your bank whether it offers SSA Automated Enrollment (ENR). If it participates, the bank can transmit your updated direct-deposit information directly to Social Security, so you do not need a call or office visit for that enrollment route. SSA cautions that not every bank offers ENR.

- “Do you offer SSA Automated Enrollment for changing Social Security direct deposit?”
- Which identification documents or account details does the bank require?
- When will the bank submit the request, and how will you receive confirmation?
- Should the old account remain open until SSA confirms the change?
Bank participation and internal procedures are not established by SSA’s general instructions. If the bank does not offer ENR, use the my Social Security, telephone, or office route appropriate to your benefit.

- Sign in to or create a personal my Social Security account. The account is used to generate the code.
- Generate the one-time code at ssa.gov/PIN. Follow the current instructions displayed there.
- Call 1-800-772-1213. Give the code to the representative when asked, then provide the new bank information through the identity-verified process.
- Record the representative’s instructions. Ask when the change is expected to become effective and how you can confirm it.
SSA lists TTY assistance at 1-800-325-0778. The task guidance says telephone service is generally available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in most U.S. time zones.
If you cannot sign in, create an account, or generate the one-time code, SSA says you may need to visit an office or arrange enrollment through a participating bank. A call without the required identity proofing does not by itself authorize the change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat SSI recipients should do
SSI recipients should not rely on the standard online bank-change flow. SSA says SSI recipients cannot currently make this change through that online service. If the bank account used for SSI direct deposit changes, SSA’s SSI reporting guidance directs recipients to call so monthly payments can continue on time or to contact a local office.
You may still use My Profile to check the payment method and update a telephone number, but that does not mean the bank-account change itself is available online. When you contact SSA, explain that the account used for SSI direct deposit has changed and ask which identity and documentation steps apply to your case.

When will the new account receive a payment?
The reviewed SSA direct-deposit instructions do not establish one processing time that applies to every beneficiary, route, bank, or benefit type. They also do not identify a universal “next payment” rule. Your account may allow you to select when certain profile changes take effect, but that setting is not a promise that every payment will move on the same date.
Before moving money or closing the old account, ask SSA or the bank:
- What effective date is recorded for your change?
- Which payment, if any, will still be sent to the old account?
- How will a rejected or misdirected payment be corrected?
- When should you check the new account for the first deposit?
Keep both accounts available until the transition is confirmed. If a payment does not arrive when expected, contact SSA and the bank promptly rather than submitting repeated changes, which can complicate identity and payment records.
Changing payment when you do not have a bank account
An electronic account is required for direct deposit. An SSA article dated June 2, 2026 identifies Direct Express as an electronic-payment option for people without a bank account. Ask SSA for current eligibility and enrollment instructions rather than assuming that a particular card or account is available to you.

The same SSA article says federal benefits are required to be paid electronically as of September 30, 2025 and describes the agency’s transition away from paper checks. If you still receive a paper check, use SSA’s current electronic-payment instructions and ask how to move your specific benefit to an eligible electronic method.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why SSA emphasizes electronic payment and identity checks
SSA reported on March 12, 2025 that approximately 40 percent of Social Security direct-deposit fraud was associated with someone calling SSA to change direct-deposit bank information. That is SSA’s figure for the date and category it described; it is not a general fraud rate for all benefits or all periods. The one-time-code requirement and account-based verification are intended to make an unauthorized change harder.
SSA’s June 2, 2026 article also says paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, altered, or returned undeliverable than electronic payments. It reports, citing the Department of the Treasury, that the average cost to print a check had risen to $3.07 per check—approximately 20 times the cost of automated payments. Those comparisons are agency-published figures and should be understood in the context SSA gave them.
Troubleshooting common problems
The online direct-deposit option is missing
First confirm that you are receiving retirement, survivors, or disability benefits rather than SSI. SSI recipients currently cannot use the same online change service. If your benefit is eligible but the option is still absent, follow any additional verification prompt, then contact SSA or ask your bank about ENR.
Recommended Free Tools
You cannot complete Login.gov or ID.me verification
Use the sign-in service’s recovery process. If you still cannot access a personal account, you may not be able to generate the one-time telephone code. SSA says a person unable to generate that code may need an office visit or bank enrollment.

Your bank says it does not offer Automated Enrollment
That is not unusual; SSA says participation varies. Use the online account if your benefit type permits it, or follow the phone and office identity procedures.
You entered the wrong account number
Contact SSA and the bank immediately and explain that the submitted direct-deposit details are incorrect. Do not wait for a payment to fail, and do not assume closing the account will reverse the change. Ask which correction route and identity documents apply.
A payment went to the old account
Do not infer that the change failed. The effective date may be later than the submission date. Check the confirmation and contact SSA or the bank to determine which account was designated for that payment.
You need an office visit
SSA’s identity guidance says an appointment is not required when the sole reason for visiting is changing direct deposit. Contact the office first if you need accessibility, document, or case-specific guidance, and bring identification and your bank information.
Comparison of the available update routes
| Route | Benefit availability | Identity requirement | Bank participation | Office or call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal my Social Security account | Retirement, survivors, and disability; not currently the standard SSI bank-change route | Login.gov or ID.me account access and any prompts shown by SSA | Not required | Usually not required |
| SSA Automated Enrollment | Ask the bank and SSA whether it applies to your benefit | Bank’s identity and account checks | Required; not every bank offers it | No call or office visit required when enrollment is completed by the bank |
| Telephone | Available under SSA’s current identity procedure | One-time code generated online, then representative verification | Not required | Call 1-800-772-1213; TTY 1-800-325-0778 |
| SSA office | Use when online or telephone identity steps are unavailable or your case requires it | Office identity and documentation requirements | Not required | Visit an office; SSA says an appointment is not required solely for a direct-deposit change |
SSA has not published a consistent processing-time comparison for these routes in the reviewed instructions. Choose based on eligibility, identity access, bank participation, and whether you need in-person help—not on an assumed delivery date.
Representative payees
If you are a representative payee, use the Representative Payee Portal to manage the beneficiary’s direct deposit, as SSA directs. Do not use the beneficiary’s personal account unless SSA specifically authorizes that arrangement. Keep records of the submitted change and its effective date for the beneficiary’s payment file.
