How to Update Bank Details for Salary, Pensions and Government Benefits After an IFSC Change (India)

An IFSC change at your bank does not automatically update every organisation that pays you. Treat salary, a government pension and each government benefit as separate payment records. Confirm what changed with your bank, then update the employer payroll system, pension authority or disbursing bank, and the relevant benefit administrator or Aadhaar-based DBT mapping separately.

The correct route depends on whether only the branch IFSC changed, the account number changed, the account moved to another bank, or the old account was closed. Use the administrator’s official process, obtain confirmation of the effective date, and check the next payment through the channel that owns that record.

Why one IFSC change can require several updates

An Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) identifies a bank branch for electronic transfers. A bank may change an IFSC when a branch is merged, relocated, renamed or otherwise reorganised. Your account may continue to operate normally, but outside organisations can still hold the previous IFSC in their own records.

Salary, pensions and government benefits are not controlled by one central payment database. Payroll is controlled by your employer; a government pension follows the applicable central or state scheme and its pension-sanctioning or disbursing arrangement; and an Aadhaar-based Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) uses a bank mandate and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) mapper. A change made in one system is not proof that the others changed.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) maintains official branch information as changes are reported by banks, but that directory does not edit an employer’s payroll file or a scheme administrator’s beneficiary record. You can check the RBI’s description of its branch data at RBI Directory of Bank Offices.

Start by identifying exactly what changed

Before submitting any form, ask the bank to confirm the precise change and obtain it through an official branch, app, website, statement or helpline. Do not assume that a new IFSC means a new account.

Bank situation What may remain unchanged What to ask the payer or administrator to update
Only the branch IFSC changed Usually the account number and customer relationship, subject to the bank’s notice The IFSC stored in payroll, pension or scheme records; ask whether the payer refreshes branch data automatically or needs your request
Your account number changed within the same bank The bank and possibly the branch Submit the new account number and IFSC wherever payments are recorded; do not rely on an IFSC-only request
The account moved to another bank Your identity details, but not the destination account Provide the new bank account and IFSC to every relevant payer or scheme, and complete any DBT mandate and consent process
The old account was closed and replaced Nothing usable at the closed destination Update all records before the next payment and ask about rejected, returned or held credits

Ask the bank whether standing instructions, direct debits, cheque arrangements and incoming-credit handling were migrated. Those operational details are separate from the IFSC itself and can affect a payment even when the account number appears unchanged.

Use the right update route for each payment

Payment Record owner First contact Key confirmation to obtain
Salary or wages Employer payroll or HR Your employer’s established payroll channel Account number and IFSC recorded, payroll cycle in which the change starts, and rejection procedure
Government pension The applicable pension scheme and its sanctioning or disbursing arrangement Pension disbursing bank or relevant pension authority Whether the pension record needs a form, identity proof or bank proof, and the effective payment date
Aadhaar-based DBT Benefit scheme plus the bank/NPCI Aadhaar mapper relationship Bank branch holding the chosen account, then the scheme administrator if its beneficiary record also changes Mandate submission, seeding status and the next credited instalment
Non-Aadhaar government benefit The named scheme or department using its own payment route Scheme portal, department office or helpline shown in the scheme’s official instructions Whether the beneficiary record and bank destination were amended separately

RBI’s Master Circular on Disbursement of Government Pension by Agency Banks, dated April 1, 2025, explains that pension disbursement is governed by the relevant government scheme. The circular consolidates RBI instructions through March 31, 2025 and does not replace the instructions of the central or state government scheme.

Update salary details through payroll or HR

1. Use an authenticated employer channel

Open the payroll portal, raise the employer’s prescribed bank-change request, or contact HR/payroll using the address or ticketing system already used for employment matters. Do not send account details to an unverified number or an email address copied from a suspicious message.

2. Submit the details the employer requests

Give the account holder name, account number, bank name, new IFSC and any branch information requested. If the employer asks for proof, use the permitted document, such as a bank statement, cancelled cheque or bank letter. The evidence reviewed does not establish one universal document list, form or deadline for all employers, so follow your employer’s current instructions rather than a generic checklist.

3. Ask payroll to read back the stored record

Request written confirmation of the exact account number and IFSC now held in the payroll system. Ask whether the change applies to the next pay run or a later cycle, and whether payroll will attempt a re-credit if the old details cause a rejection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check the first affected pay

Compare the credit against the confirmed account and pay date. If the payment is missing, ask payroll whether it was rejected, returned by the bank, held for verification or sent using the previous record. The employer’s payroll team, not the bank’s general branch directory, controls the correction of an employer payment.

Update a government pension record

Identify who owns the pension instruction

Start with the bank branch or agency bank that disburses the pension, or the pension-sanctioning authority named in your pension paperwork. Ask whether the bank is authorised to amend the destination directly or whether the pension authority must first issue an instruction.

The governing scheme may be central or state based, and operational requirements can differ by scheme and bank. RBI’s pension circular directs users to the relevant government instructions rather than establishing a single nationwide account-change form.

Ask for the exact form and evidence

Confirm whether you need a pension payment order or pension identifier, identity proof, proof of the new account, a passbook or statement, a cancelled cheque, a signature verification or an in-person request. Do not submit documents that the administrator did not request, and never surrender original identity documents without a receipt and a safe return process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Obtain an effective date and escalation path

Ask when the new details will be used, whether one pension cycle can still go to the old destination, and what happens if the old account has already closed. Keep the acknowledgement, reference number and the name of the office or branch that accepted the request.

Verify the next pension credit

Check the account statement or the pension channel specified by the disbursing authority. If the credit fails, contact the disbursing bank first and then the pension authority if the bank says its record is correct but the scheme instruction was not received.

Change the account for an Aadhaar-based DBT

Understand the two records involved

Aadhaar-based DBT involves both the benefit scheme’s beneficiary record and the bank’s Aadhaar seeding process. UIDAI states that to change the account receiving DBT, you should visit the relevant bank branch and submit the bank’s mandate and consent form. The instruction appears in UIDAI’s Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) FAQ.

Submit the bank mandate and consent form

  1. Choose the account that should receive Aadhaar-based DBT and confirm that it is active and eligible to receive credits.
  2. Visit the bank branch holding that account and request the bank’s DBT mandate and consent form.
  3. Complete the form exactly as the bank requires, including the Aadhaar details and account information requested on the form.
  4. Submit it at the branch and obtain an acknowledgement or service reference.
  5. Ask the bank when it will seed the chosen account in the NPCI mapper and how it will notify you of completion.

UIDAI’s official guidance is also available at UIDAI Direct Benefit Transfer. UIDAI explains that a beneficiary can receive Aadhaar-based DBT in one chosen account at a time. If you want a different bank to receive the credit, the new bank must complete the seeding process; merely opening an account or changing an IFSC does not do that.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check seeding status after submission

Use UIDAI’s MyAadhaar service or NPCI’s status service as directed by the bank to check whether the chosen account is seeded. Save a screenshot, acknowledgement or reference number showing the status. A successful bank-side request does not by itself prove that every scheme’s beneficiary record has been amended, so follow the particular scheme’s instructions as well.

Do not treat the NPCI mapper as an IFSC directory

The Government of India’s Guidelines for State DBT Cell explain that the mapper holds the Aadhaar number and the destination bank’s IIN (Institution Identification Number). It does not hold the beneficiary’s account number, IFSC or branch address.

That distinction matters after a branch reorganisation. A bank may update its internal branch and IFSC records while the Aadhaar mapping still needs to be seeded, changed or revalidated. Contact the bank if the account moved, the old branch was merged, the account number changed, or a DBT credit was rejected. Ask the benefit department whether it also maintains a separate beneficiary account record.

Government benefits that are not Aadhaar-based DBT

Government benefits is a broad category. A scheme may pay through an account-based instruction, a department portal, a state treasury, a pension-style arrangement or Aadhaar-based DBT. The fact that a benefit is paid by a government body does not reveal which route it uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the scheme’s current payment or bank-detail instructions on its official portal or notice.
  2. Contact the named department, local office or scheme helpdesk and ask whether the bank destination is held by the scheme, a treasury, a bank or an intermediary.
  3. Update the beneficiary record using the scheme’s prescribed form or portal, even if your bank has already changed its IFSC.
  4. Ask for the effective payment batch, acknowledgement number and procedure for a returned credit.
  5. Check both the scheme status and the bank statement after the next scheduled payment.

Do not assume that an Aadhaar seeding status replaces a scheme-portal update. Conversely, a scheme portal showing a new account does not prove that Aadhaar-based DBT mapping has changed.

Documents, security and record-keeping

Prepare a controlled document set

  • Bank communication showing the old and new IFSC or the branch event.
  • Proof of the current account number and account holder name.
  • Any new passbook page, statement, bank letter or cancelled cheque accepted by the administrator.
  • Identity or pension identifiers only where the employer, bank or scheme officially requires them.
  • Existing payroll, pension or benefit reference numbers.

Mask unnecessary information when an administrator permits it, and submit documents only through the verified portal, branch or official email. A bank employee or government office should not require your one-time password, debit-card PIN, internet-banking password or full card security code to update a credit destination.

Keep an audit trail

Record the submission date, channel, reference number, documents supplied, staff or helpdesk contact and promised effective cycle. Keep the bank’s IFSC notice with each confirmation. Separate records make it easier to show whether a failure occurred at payroll, pension disbursement, scheme administration, bank processing or DBT mapping.

Timing and failed-payment troubleshooting

There is no single official turnaround time covering all employers, pension arrangements and benefit schemes. The responsible administrator must tell you its processing window and effective payment cycle. A bank’s notice about a branch IFSC may have a different date from the date on which an employer or government system refreshes its records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If salary is rejected or missing

  • Ask payroll whether the instruction used the old IFSC, an old account number or a rejected beneficiary record.
  • Ask the bank whether the account is active and able to receive credits under the new IFSC.
  • Request the employer’s re-credit or correction process and obtain a new payment reference if one is issued.

If a pension is not credited

  • Check with the pension disbursing bank whether the account-change request was accepted and whether the pension authority’s instruction arrived.
  • Confirm that the old account was not closed before the authority completed the change.
  • Escalate to the scheme’s pension authority with the acknowledgement and bank response.

If an Aadhaar-based DBT is not received

  • Check the bank’s acknowledgement and UIDAI or NPCI seeding status.
  • Ask the bank whether another account is currently mapped for Aadhaar-based DBT, because only one chosen account receives that route at a time.
  • Contact the benefit scheme to confirm that your beneficiary record is active and that the instalment was released.

If the account was closed

Tell every payer immediately that the previous destination cannot receive funds. Ask whether the payment was returned and how to submit replacement details. Do not wait for a future cycle if a salary, pension or benefit is already due.

A practical sequence you can follow

  1. Obtain the bank’s official confirmation of the old and new IFSC, account number status, branch status and any account migration or closure.
  2. List every incoming payment separately: each employer, pension, Aadhaar-based DBT and other government scheme.
  3. Update payroll or HR and obtain the recorded account details and effective pay cycle.
  4. Contact the pension disbursing bank or pension authority and follow the governing scheme’s form and proof requirements.
  5. For Aadhaar-based DBT, submit the new bank’s mandate and consent form at the branch and request NPCI mapper seeding.
  6. For each other benefit, update the scheme’s own beneficiary record through its official channel.
  7. Check seeding or application status where a status service exists, and retain every acknowledgement.
  8. Monitor the next payment in each stream and escalate a rejection to the organisation that owns that payment record.

What the official instructions actually say

UIDAI’s DBT FAQ gives this direct instruction: To change the bank account for receiving DBT funds, please visit the respective bank branch and submit the mandate and consent form provided by your bank. The FAQ does not say that an IFSC change alone updates all government payments.

RBI’s April 1, 2025 pension circular states that its consolidated instructions do not replace existing government instructions. Therefore, the central or state pension scheme remains controlling for the pension record, while the bank carries out the operational steps it is authorised to perform.

Final checklist before the next payment

  • Bank: exact change identified; account active; new IFSC confirmed.
  • Salary: payroll record shows the correct account and IFSC; effective pay cycle recorded.
  • Pension: authority or disbursing bank has accepted the request; effective date and escalation contact saved.
  • Aadhaar DBT: mandate and consent form submitted; NPCI mapper seeding status checked.
  • Other benefits: scheme-specific beneficiary record updated separately where required.
  • Security: documents sent only through verified channels; no OTP, PIN or password disclosed.
  • Monitoring: next credit checked and any rejected payment traced to the record owner.

The safest approach is therefore administrative rather than automatic: verify the bank change, update each payment owner independently, and confirm completion in the system that actually sends the money.
