The amount of ETH is set at finalization, not when you submit the request. It can differ from the amount you expect, and a severe protocol loss could result in less than 1 ETH for 1 stETH. Lido’s specification says that outcome has not occurred historically, but it is not a guaranteed 1:1 redemption.

What unstaking stETH on Lido actually does
Lido withdrawal is a three-stage process: request, finalization and claim. The withdrawal queue holds your stETH while Lido arranges the ETH needed to settle requests. You do not receive ETH at the moment you approve or submit the request.

The NFT is the claim ticket. Treat it as valuable until the ETH has been claimed: transferring it, losing its private key or sending it to an incompatible contract can prevent the intended wallet from claiming.

Check these requirements before submitting
Use a compatible Ethereum wallet
Connect the wallet that holds your stETH to Lido’s withdrawal interface. Confirm that you are on the Ethereum network used by the Lido withdrawal contract, that the wallet can sign approvals and transactions, and that it contains enough ETH for network gas. Gas is separate from the stETH you withdraw and is not deducted from the queued principal as a Lido fee.
Know the request-size limits
Lido’s documented limits apply to each request. A larger balance must be divided into multiple requests; each request receives its own NFT and later claim transaction.

The minimum is expressed in wei, the smallest unit used by the contract. Your wallet interface may display a more convenient decimal equivalent.
Decide whether you need the queue
A protocol withdrawal gives you a claim to native ETH after finalization. It does not promise an immediate settlement price or completion time. If you need liquidity immediately, compare it with a market swap before locking your stETH; the two routes have different risks and execution mechanics.

Step-by-step: request a Lido withdrawal
- Open Lido’s withdrawal interface and connect your wallet. Verify the site address through a trusted bookmark or documentation link, select the wallet that owns the stETH, and check the displayed network before signing anything.
- Enter the stETH amount. Keep the amount within the per-request limits. If you are withdrawing more than the maximum, plan separate requests rather than attempting one oversized transaction. Review the amount and the wallet or recipient that will receive ETH at claim time.
- Approve the stETH, or use the supported permit flow. A standard approval authorizes the withdrawal contract to move the selected amount. If the interface offers a permit, it can authorize the transfer through a signed message or supported transaction flow. Read the token amount and spender carefully; an approval is not the withdrawal itself.
- Use the dedicated method for wstETH when applicable. Wrapped stETH is a different token representation. If your balance is wstETH, use Lido’s dedicated wstETH request method in the interface or contract integration rather than treating the balance as ordinary stETH.
- Submit the withdrawal request. Confirm the final transaction in your wallet. Once mined, Lido locks the tokens and mints an unstETH ERC-721 NFT representing the request. Save the transaction hash and request or NFT identifier.
- Wait for finalization. The request enters a first-in, first-out queue. Lido’s accounting oracle finalizes batches only when a request is eligible, the required timelock has passed and sufficient ETH is available. A submitted request can therefore remain pending even if the transaction succeeded.
- Claim after the request becomes claimable. Return to the withdrawal interface, select the finalized request and submit the claim transaction. The reserved ETH is transferred to the request owner or the specified recipient, and the unstETH NFT is burned.
Do not assume that a successful request transaction means you can claim immediately. The request, finalization and claim are separate on-chain events, normally requiring separate wallet interactions and gas payments.
How long does a Lido withdrawal take?
There is no universal guaranteed wait time. The queue is processed in batches, and timing changes with the number of requests ahead of you, oracle reporting, the timelock and the ETH available for settlement. Network conditions can also affect how quickly your own transactions are included, but they do not bypass Lido’s queue rules.
Why two requests submitted together can finalize at different times
- FIFO ordering means an earlier eligible request is handled before a later one.
- Requests become eligible only after the applicable timelock has passed.
- The accounting oracle must include the request in a finalizing report.
- Lido must have enough ETH available to reserve the payout for the batch.
These conditions make a single countdown unreliable. A displayed estimate is a current projection, not a service-level promise.

Use Lido’s withdrawal-status functions or its Withdrawals API. For a new amount, the tools can provide a dynamic estimate; for an existing request, query the request ID or NFT identifier to see whether it is pending, finalized or claimable. Check again before sending a claim transaction because the status can change between visits.

Will 1 stETH always produce 1 ETH?
No. Lido determines the ETH payout at finalization. The accounting-oracle specification states that the stETH-to-ETH redemption rate for each request is the inverse of the ETH-to-stETH staking rate at that time. The rate you see when submitting is therefore not a binding quote.
In ordinary conditions, the rate is designed to reflect the value of the staked position, but the protocol does not promise exactly 1 ETH for every 1 stETH. A severe loss affecting the protocol could produce less than a 1:1 payout. Lido notes in the cited specification that such a loss has not occurred historically; that history does not remove the risk for a future withdrawal.
Rewards stop for tokens in the queue
Once stETH enters the withdrawal queue, the withdrawing position no longer receives staking rewards. Lido’s documentation summarizes this as: “token holders don’t receive rewards but still take risks during withdrawal.” The rewards that would otherwise accrue to those tokens are effectively distributed to holders whose tokens remain in the system.

The finalization rate incorporates the staking rate and the protocol conditions used by the oracle report. If the staking rate changes while your request waits, the ETH amount reserved for your request can differ from an estimate shown at submission. Review the finalized amount before claiming when the interface makes it available.

Protect the unstETH NFT and the claim right
The unstETH NFT identifies the withdrawal request and records who can claim. Keep it in the wallet that submitted the request unless you intentionally transfer control to a recipient who understands the consequences. Anyone controlling the NFT may be able to claim the associated ETH, subject to the contract’s ownership rules.
- Back up the wallet’s recovery method and do not disclose its private key or seed phrase.
- Do not approve an unlimited token amount when a precise amount is sufficient.
- Check the withdrawal contract, token amount and recipient on every wallet confirmation.
- Ignore unsolicited messages asking you to “unlock” or “accelerate” a pending request.
- Keep the request ID, NFT token ID and transaction hashes so you can reconcile the status independently.
After a successful claim, verify the ETH receipt in the wallet and confirm that the unstETH NFT has been burned or is no longer claimable. Do not attempt a second claim for the same finalized request.

The process uses on-chain transactions, so you should budget network gas for the approval or permit flow, the withdrawal request and the eventual claim. The amount varies with Ethereum network conditions and the transaction type. The documented material does not state a separate universal Lido withdrawal fee or a fixed gas amount; check the transaction preview in your wallet before signing.

A market swap has its own cost structure: a quoted spread or slippage, the swap fee charged by the venue and network gas. Compare the total cost rather than looking only at the displayed exchange rate.

Protocol withdrawal or secondary-market swap?
Exchanges and swap aggregators can be more convenient when you need an immediate trade. They execute a market swap, while Lido’s queue converts the position into reserved ETH only after oracle finalization. Neither route is automatically better; the right choice depends on whether speed, price certainty or direct receipt of native ETH matters most.

Choose the queue when you can wait and want the protocol’s direct withdrawal path. Consider a swap when immediate execution is more important than avoiding market pricing, and verify the route’s liquidity and recipient before signing.
Troubleshooting common problems
The interface will not let me submit
- Confirm the wallet is connected to the correct network and actually holds the token you selected.
- Check that the amount satisfies the contract’s per-request range and that any required approval covers the exact amount.
- If you used a permit, make sure the signature has not expired and that it was created for the intended chain and spender.
- Leave enough ETH in the wallet to pay gas; a token balance alone cannot pay the transaction fee.
My transaction succeeded but no NFT is visible
Wait for the transaction to be indexed, then search the wallet or a reputable block explorer for the ERC-721 transfer and the request ID. The NFT may not appear immediately in a wallet’s gallery. Do not submit a duplicate request until you have verified the original transaction and status.

The request is still pending
Pending status is normal before finalization. Check the request ID through Lido’s status tools, review the current estimate and confirm that the request has not yet met the timelock, oracle or ETH-availability conditions. Sending another transaction does not move an existing request forward in the FIFO queue.
The claim button is unavailable
A request can be claimed only after Lido marks it finalized and claimable. Verify that you are connected with the wallet controlling the unstETH NFT, then refresh the status from the request ID. If ownership was transferred, the current NFT owner—not the original requester—must perform or authorize the claim according to the contract rules.
The ETH amount is lower than I expected
Use the finalized redemption rate and amount shown for the request, not the estimate from submission. The payout is determined at finalization and reflects the inverse of the ETH:stETH staking rate. Confirm that you are comparing the gross ETH payout with your expected amount before network gas.
