How to turn off voice purchasing on Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri

Alexa is the only assistant in this guide with a documented switch that disables voice purchasing outright: in the Alexa app, go to More > Settings > Account Management > Voice Purchasing > Purchase Controls and select No one. Apple documents purchase-password and Screen Time restrictions rather than a Siri-only switch. A current Google Assistant voice-purchasing disable control could not be verified in Google’s official help material, so there is no reliable Google Assistant menu path to provide here.

These controls do not all protect the same thing. Alexa’s setting targets voice-initiated purchases, Apple’s settings govern authentication or in-app purchases on Apple devices, and Google’s documented family-approval feature applies to purchases billed through Google Play—not necessarily to Assistant voice transactions.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Before changing anything, identify which assistant heard the request, which account processed it, and which merchant appears on the receipt. A spoken request can pass from an assistant to a skill, app, store, or outside payment provider. Blocking one layer does not automatically block every other route.

What “turn off voice purchasing” can mean

A spoken purchase can involve several different systems: the assistant that hears the request, the retailer or skill handling the order, and the account or store that charges a payment method. A setting that protects one layer may not block another.

  • Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning
  • Disable voice purchasing: prevents the assistant from completing purchases by voice, where the platform provides that control.
  • Require authentication: keeps purchasing available but requires a password or another confirmation step.
  • Block a purchase category: for example, Apple’s Screen Time control blocks in-app purchases without disabling every Apple purchase type.

Country, account type, device, and app version can change the labels or availability of controls. Use the platform section that matches the assistant and billing system involved. If a charge has already appeared, changing a setting is a preventive step; it does not by itself cancel an order or reverse a payment.

Map the transaction before choosing a setting

The fastest way to avoid using the wrong control is to follow the money rather than the voice. Read the receipt, email confirmation, or card statement and note the merchant name. Then ask three questions:

  1. Which assistant handled the request? It may have been Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri, but the assistant is not always the biller.
  2. Which service supplied the item or subscription? A first-party store, an app, or a third-party skill can have different rules.
  3. Which payment system completed the charge? Amazon, Apple services, Google Play, or a provider’s own checkout may each require a separate safeguard.

This map also explains why a family approval feature can be useful for one purchase and irrelevant to another. A control should be described by its scope—voice orders, store authentication, or in-app purchases—not simply by the fact that the original request was spoken.

Quick comparison of the documented controls

Assistant Documented control Primary scope Key limitation
Alexa Alexa app: Voice Purchasing > Purchase Controls > No one Disables Alexa voice purchasing through the documented Alexa control Amazon says the setting may not apply when a third-party skill charges directly through its own provider
Google Assistant No Assistant-specific voice-purchasing disable path was verified in the official help material reviewed Google’s documented family approvals concern Google Play billing Play purchase approvals are not evidence of an Assistant voice-purchasing switch
Siri Apple purchase-password settings and Screen Time’s in-app-purchase restriction Apple services authentication or in-app purchases on iPhone and iPad Apple does not document these as a Siri-only voice-purchase control; paid-item password protection cannot be completely turned off on iPhone, iPad, or computer

In other words, Alexa offers a direct disable choice; Apple offers account-level authentication and a category block; and Google’s documented control is a store-billing approval workflow rather than a confirmed Assistant setting. Treating all three as equivalent would create a false sense of protection.

Alexa: disable voice purchasing completely

Use the Alexa app’s “No one” setting

Amazon documents a direct control for turning off Alexa voice purchasing. Make the change in the Alexa app signed in to the account that manages the relevant devices.

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Open Account Management.
  5. Choose Voice Purchasing.
  6. Open Purchase Controls.
  7. Select No one.

Amazon’s instructions are available at Turn Alexa Voice Purchasing On or Off. Selecting No one is different from merely requiring a code: it is the documented option that disables voice purchasing for the account’s Alexa use.

Recognized voices: a narrower alternative

Amazon also documents a recognized-voice option. This limits purchasing to voices Alexa recognizes instead of disabling the feature for everyone. It can be useful when one person needs voice purchasing, but it is not equivalent to selecting No one. Recognition can be affected by the device, account, enrollment, and the speaker’s voice, so treat it as a restriction rather than a guarantee that no unintended order can occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A voice code still leaves purchasing enabled

A voice code adds a confirmation requirement before a purchase. That can reduce accidental orders, but the purchasing capability remains active. If the objective is to stop spoken orders altogether, use No one rather than a code. If an adult still wants the convenience of voice ordering, a code or recognized-voice restriction may be a better compromise, provided everyone understands that a purchase remains possible.

Check every household device after saving

Alexa settings are associated with the account and the devices using it, but household arrangements can include multiple accounts or profiles. After selecting No one, check the account shown in the app and confirm that other household members are not using a different Amazon account. If a particular speaker is managed under another account, changing the first account may not change that device’s behavior.

Why an Alexa setting may not stop every charge

Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use state that voice-purchasing settings may not apply to some purchases made through third-party skills when the payment is provided directly to that skill’s provider. In practical terms, an Alexa setting can govern Amazon’s documented voice-purchasing flow while a separate provider controls its own billing. See the limitation in Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use.

If a charge came from a skill provider rather than Amazon’s own purchasing flow, identify the merchant on the receipt and use that provider’s account or support process. Do not assume that changing Alexa’s Purchase Controls reverses or blocks every skill-related charge. The provider may need to disable its own subscription, payment method, or account authorization.

Google Assistant: what you can and cannot verify

No confirmed Assistant-specific disable path

The official Google help material reviewed does not establish a current setting that turns off voice purchasing specifically for Google Assistant, nor does it provide a verified menu path for doing so. Because menu names and feature availability can vary by country, account, device, and app version, an apparent setting in one Google product should not be presented as a universal Assistant control.

For that reason, do not follow an online guide that substitutes an unverified Google Home or Assistant menu for an official control. The absence of a verified path is important: it means you should not promise that a particular switch will prevent every spoken purchase. A setting that controls shopping suggestions, voice-match behavior, or a family account is not automatically a purchase block.

Google Play purchase approvals are a different control

Google’s documented Purchase approvals on Google Play feature concerns transactions that use Google Play billing, particularly family purchases. It does not establish that Google Assistant voice purchasing can be disabled, and it should not be described as an Assistant voice-purchase setting.

A Play approval workflow may therefore leave other transaction paths outside its scope. Before relying on it, identify whether the charge is actually processed through Google Play and whether the account is part of a family arrangement covered by that feature. A purchase made through a retailer, a skill, or another billing provider may not pass through Google Play at all.

What to do when you need a hard stop

  • Do not assume Google Play approval covers every purchase initiated by a spoken request.
  • Check the billing descriptor and receipt to determine whether the transaction used Google Play or another provider.
  • Use only a Google control whose current instructions explicitly mention the product and billing path you need to protect.
  • If your device or country shows a different Assistant setting, verify its description and scope in the current Google support documentation before relying on it.
  • For children, review the account and payment method attached to the device separately; a family approval feature is meaningful only for eligible Google Play billing transactions.

Those steps avoid turning a family-store safeguard into a claim that Google Assistant itself has been disabled for purchasing. At present, the responsible answer is that an Assistant-specific off switch and its menu path have not been established by the official material covered here.

Siri and Apple devices: require authentication or block in-app purchases

Require a password for Apple purchases

Apple’s documented control concerns purchase authentication for the App Store and other Apple services, not a Siri-only voice-purchasing toggle. On an iPhone or iPad, use this path:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap [your name].
  3. Choose Media & Purchases.
  4. Tap Password Settings.
  5. Choose when a password is required for purchases.

The exact choices can depend on the account and authentication configuration. Apple notes that if Face ID or Touch ID is configured for purchases, the password-setting option may not appear. Apple also says password protection for paid items cannot be completely turned off on an iPhone, iPad, or computer. The relevant instructions are in Apple’s purchase-password support article.

This approach keeps purchases available but adds authentication. It is appropriate when you want approval before a purchase rather than a blanket block on a specific category. Because the control belongs to Apple’s account and store layer, it can protect a purchase even when the request began with Siri, but it should not be described as Siri disabling voice orders.

Block in-app purchases with Screen Time

To prevent in-app purchases on an iPhone or iPad, first enable Screen Time, then use Apple’s restriction:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Screen Time and enable it if it is not already enabled.
  3. Choose Apps and Websites.
  4. Tap App Store.
  5. Choose In-app Purchases.
  6. Select Blocked.

Apple documents this procedure at Turn off Apple In-App Purchases from Screen Time on your iPhone or iPad. The restriction applies to in-app purchases; it is not a Siri voice-purchase switch and does not automatically block every type of Apple purchase, subscription, or transaction outside that category.

Screen Time is therefore useful when the problem is spending inside apps, especially on a child’s iPhone or iPad. It is not a substitute for checking the Apple account’s purchase-authentication setting, and it does not govern charges made directly by an outside provider.

Why Siri does not have the same answer as Alexa

Apple’s published controls address the Apple account and store layer: when authentication is required and whether in-app purchases are allowed. The documentation does not provide a Siri-specific setting equivalent to Alexa’s Voice Purchasing > No one control. If a spoken request leads to an Apple purchase, the relevant protection is therefore the Apple purchase-authentication or Screen Time restriction that matches the transaction type.

Choosing the right protection for your situation

You want no assistant-initiated orders

On Alexa, select No one under Purchase Controls. For Google Assistant and Siri, the official material covered here does not establish an equivalent assistant-wide disable switch. Use the documented store or account restrictions that match the billing system, and avoid claiming broader coverage than the control describes.

You want an adult to approve each purchase

On Alexa, a voice code is a confirmation measure, not a disablement. On Apple devices, configure the purchase-password requirement under Media & Purchases > Password Settings, subject to Apple’s Face ID or Touch ID behavior. For Google, Play family approvals apply only to eligible Google Play billing transactions, not to every Assistant request.

You need to stop children’s in-app spending on an iPhone or iPad

Enable Screen Time and set App Store > In-app Purchases to Blocked. This is narrower than blocking all paid items, but it directly addresses the in-app category Apple documents. Pair it with account-level purchase authentication when you also need approval for other Apple purchases.

You saw a charge after changing a setting

  • Check the merchant and billing descriptor on the receipt.
  • For Alexa, determine whether a third-party skill charged directly through its provider; Amazon’s terms say the Alexa voice-purchasing settings may not apply in that situation.
  • For Google, check whether Google Play billing was used before treating a Play approval setting as relevant.
  • For Apple, determine whether the transaction was an in-app purchase or another Apple service, because Screen Time’s in-app restriction does not cover every purchase type.
  • Contact the merchant or platform that actually processed the payment; an assistant setting is not automatically a refund or cancellation process.

Troubleshooting the settings

The Alexa menu is missing

Confirm that the Alexa app is signed in to the account that owns or manages the device, then check the labels under More > Settings. Amazon notes that availability can vary by country, account, device, and app version. If the Voice Purchasing section is absent, do not infer that purchasing is disabled; verify the account and current regional documentation.

Alexa still allows a skill-related charge

Review the skill’s provider and the receipt. The documented Alexa control may not cover a third-party skill that takes payment directly. A provider-level account setting or support request may be required for that separate billing path.

Apple does not show “Password Settings”

Check whether Face ID or Touch ID is configured for purchases. Apple says the password-setting option may not appear in that configuration. You can still use the documented Screen Time restriction for in-app purchases if that is the category you need to block.

A Google guide shows a different menu

Feature availability and labels can change by country, account, device, and app version. More importantly, the official material reviewed here does not verify an Assistant-specific voice-purchasing disable path. Treat a Google Play family-approval setting as limited to Google Play billing, not as proof that Assistant voice purchases are disabled.

A setting appears to save but a test behaves differently

Do not test with a real order. First confirm which account is active and read the control’s explanatory text. Then inspect a non-purchase voice request and the account’s purchase settings. If a real charge occurs, use the receipt to identify the billing provider before changing additional controls. Different accounts on shared speakers, phones, or tablets can make a correctly saved setting appear ineffective.

Before you rely on a change

  • Record which account, device, and assistant you changed.
  • Read the control’s description for its scope: voice purchasing, password authentication, or in-app purchases.
  • Check whether a separate skill, app, family account, or payment provider handles the transaction.
  • Keep in mind that a setting can prevent a new purchase without automatically cancelling an existing order or reversing a charge.
  • Recheck the setting after a major app update, account change, or device transfer, because labels and availability can vary.
  • Tell other household users whether purchasing is disabled, approval-protected, or limited only for in-app spending.

Frequently asked questions

Does Alexa’s voice code turn purchasing off?

No. A voice code adds confirmation while leaving voice purchasing enabled. Select No one under Purchase Controls when you want the documented Alexa disable option.

Does recognized-voice purchasing guarantee that nobody else can order?

No. Amazon presents recognized voices as a restriction, not the same as disabling purchasing. It is narrower than allowing everyone, but it is not equivalent to No one.

Will Alexa’s setting block a subscription sold by a third-party skill?

Not necessarily. Amazon’s terms say the voice-purchasing settings may not apply when a third-party skill charges directly through its provider. Check the merchant and handle that billing relationship with the provider.

Can Google Play purchase approvals turn off Google Assistant buying?

No such conclusion is established by Google’s Play help page. The documented approval feature concerns eligible transactions using Google Play billing. It is not an Assistant-specific voice-purchasing off switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Apple’s Screen Time block the same as disabling Siri purchases?

No. Screen Time’s In-app Purchases > Blocked setting blocks that purchase category on iPhone or iPad. Apple does not document it as a Siri-only control or as a block on every Apple purchase.

Why can’t I completely disable Apple paid-item passwords?

Apple says password protection for paid items cannot be completely turned off on iPhone, iPad, or computer. If Face ID or Touch ID is enabled for purchases, the password-setting option may not appear, so use the authentication configuration Apple presents for the device.

The practical answer

For Alexa, use the documented No one option. For Siri, use Apple’s purchase-password controls or Screen Time’s in-app-purchase block according to the type of protection you need; neither is documented as a Siri-only voice-purchase switch. For Google Assistant, do not rely on Google Play family approvals as a substitute for an Assistant control: the official material reviewed does not verify that such a disable switch or menu path currently exists.

The safest habit on any platform is to match the safeguard to the billing path, not merely to the device that heard the command. Verify the account, merchant, and transaction category, then use the narrowest documented control that actually covers it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Alexa’s voice code turn purchasing off?

No. A voice code adds confirmation while leaving voice purchasing enabled. Select No one under Purchase Controls to use Alexa’s documented disable option.

Will Alexa’s setting block every third-party skill charge?

Not necessarily. Amazon says its voice-purchasing settings may not apply when a third-party skill charges directly through its own provider. Check the merchant and contact that provider.

Can Google Play purchase approvals disable Google Assistant voice purchasing?

No. Google documents purchase approvals for eligible transactions using Google Play billing. That does not establish an Assistant-specific voice-purchasing switch.

Is Apple Screen Time a Siri purchase switch?

No. Screen Time can block in-app purchases on iPhone or iPad, but Apple does not describe it as a Siri-only control or a block on every Apple purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might Apple’s Password Settings option be missing?

Apple says the option may not appear when Face ID or Touch ID is configured for purchases. Apple also says paid-item password protection cannot be completely turned off on iPhone, iPad, or computer.

The Bottom Line

Alexa: Alexa app > More > Settings > Account Management > Voice Purchasing > Purchase Controls > No one. Apple/Siri: use Apple’s purchase-password settings or block in-app purchases through Screen Time; neither is a Siri-only switch. Google Assistant: Google Play family approvals apply to Google Play billing, and an Assistant-specific voice-purchasing disable path is not verified. Always check the actual merchant and billing system, especially for third-party skills and apps.
