How to Turn Off Overdraft Coverage on Your Checking Account

To turn off overdraft coverage, tell your bank or credit union that you revoke your consent for overdraft services on ATM withdrawals and one-time debit-card transactions. Use the institution’s app or online banking if it provides an overdraft control; otherwise call, send a secure message, or visit a branch. Ask which transaction types the change covers, when it becomes effective, and what fees could apply if a payment is declined or returned.

What “turning off overdraft coverage” actually changes

Most people use “overdraft protection” to mean several different services. The setting you want to change is usually the institution’s overdraft service for paying an ATM withdrawal or a one-time debit-card purchase when your available balance is too low. Revoking consent tells the institution not to use that covered service for those transactions.

The federal rule does not create one universal switch for every way an account can become overdrawn. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says you can change your mind about enrollment at any time by notifying your bank or credit union. Its consumer guidance was last reviewed December 18, 2024: What can I do if my bank charged me a fee for overdrawing my account?

Before you make the request, decide whether you want to disable only debit-card and ATM coverage or also stop other forms of overdraft handling, such as transfers from a linked savings account or an overdraft line of credit. Those products may have separate enrollment controls and terms.

Which transactions the federal opt-in rule covers

Regulation E requires a consumer’s affirmative consent before a financial institution may charge a fee for paying an ATM withdrawal or a one-time debit-card transaction through its covered overdraft service. The rule appears in the CFPB’s regulation text at § 1005.17 Requirements for overdraft services. A customer may revoke that consent, and the institution must implement the revocation as soon as reasonably practicable.

Transaction or service Covered by the federal debit/ATM opt-in? What to ask your institution
ATM cash withdrawal Yes, when the institution pays the withdrawal through its covered overdraft service Confirm that ATM overdraft consent is being revoked and ask when the change is active.
One-time debit-card purchase Yes, when paid through the covered overdraft service Ask whether the setting is labeled “debit-card overdraft,” “everyday debit,” or similar.
Written check No. The federal opt-in requirement does not cover check overdrafts. Ask whether checks can still be paid into overdraft, returned, or charged a separate fee.
ACH payment or transfer No. ACH transactions are outside this specific opt-in rule. Ask how incoming and outgoing ACH items are handled when funds are insufficient.
Recurring or automatic debit No. Recurring debit transactions are outside this specific opt-in rule. Ask whether automatic bills have a separate overdraft or return-payment policy.
Linked-account transfer or overdraft line Not addressed by the debit/ATM opt-in setting Ask whether transfers or a line of credit are separately enrolled and how to cancel them.

The CFPB explains the distinction in its Consumer Financial Protection Circular 2024-05: Improper Overdraft Opt-In Practices and the commentary to the regulation at Comment for 1005.17 Requirements for Overdraft Services. Turning off the debit-card and ATM setting therefore does not necessarily turn off every possible overdraft payment or fee.

Step-by-step: revoke your overdraft consent

  1. Identify the account and the exact service. Have your checking-account number or the last four digits available. Decide whether you are asking to stop ATM withdrawals, one-time debit-card purchases, or additional services such as linked-account transfers.
  2. Open your institution’s account controls. In online banking or the mobile app, look under the checking account, “Manage account,” “Account services,” “Overdraft,” “Debit card controls,” or “Preferences.” Labels differ by institution, so do not assume that a card-freeze control changes overdraft consent.
  3. Choose the opt-out or revocation option. Look for wording such as “overdraft coverage,” “overdraft service,” “debit-card overdraft,” or “ATM overdraft.” If the screen offers separate switches, read each description before changing it.
  4. Use another channel if no control appears. Call the number on your debit card or statement, send a secure message after signing in, or visit a branch. State that you are revoking consent for overdraft services on ATM withdrawals and one-time debit-card transactions.
  5. Ask about transaction categories that are not covered by the federal opt-in. Specifically ask how the institution handles written checks, ACH items, recurring debits, and any linked-account transfer or credit-line service. Request separate opt-outs if they are available and you want them.
  6. Confirm the effective time. Regulation E requires implementation as soon as reasonably practicable, but it does not establish one universal number of hours or days for every institution. Ask whether the change applies immediately, at the end of the day, or after a stated processing period.
  7. Request confirmation. Save an in-app confirmation, secure-message reply, email, letter, or the representative’s case number. Note the date, time, channel, and the transaction types the representative said were changed.
  8. Ask about pending items. Find out whether transactions already authorized, presented, or pending are governed by the old setting or the new one. The representative should explain how the institution treats those items under its account agreement.
  9. Review the fee consequences. Ask what could happen if an ATM withdrawal or debit purchase is declined, and what fees may apply if a check, ACH item, or recurring bill is returned. The bank or credit union can also explain any merchant returned-item fee that a payee might charge.

How to make the request through each channel

Mobile app or online banking

Sign in directly through your institution’s official app or website. Select the checking account rather than a credit card, then look for overdraft or debit-card controls. Read the disclosure beside the switch: some controls govern whether a transaction is paid, while others only manage alerts or transfers from another account. After saving, capture the confirmation page and check whether it lists ATM and one-time debit transactions separately.

If the institution only displays an “overdraft protection” switch without explaining the transaction types, use secure messaging or the telephone channel to obtain clarification. A generic switch may refer to a transfer service rather than the Regulation E opt-in.

Telephone or secure message

Use the phone number printed on your card or statement, or send a message from inside authenticated online banking. Avoid sending account details through an unsolicited text, email, or social-media message. Tell the representative exactly what you want removed and ask for written confirmation. A useful script is:

I revoke my consent for overdraft services that pay ATM withdrawals and one-time debit-card transactions on my checking account. Please tell me whether checks, ACH payments, recurring debits, linked-account transfers, or an overdraft line are controlled separately. When will this revocation take effect, and what confirmation can you provide?

Branch visit

Bring identification and, if required by the institution, your debit card. Ask the employee to identify each overdraft-related service attached to the account. Before leaving, obtain a receipt, printed confirmation, or reference number and ask when the change will appear in online banking.

What happens after coverage is turned off

ATM and one-time debit transactions may be declined

Without consent for the covered service, an ATM withdrawal or one-time debit-card transaction may be declined instead of being paid into overdraft. A declined transaction can affect a purchase, cash withdrawal, or point-of-sale payment immediately, so check your available balance before using the card.

Other payments may still overdraw the account

Checks, ACH transactions, and recurring debit payments are outside the specific federal opt-in requirement. Depending on the institution’s policies and the account agreement, one of those items may still be paid into overdraft, or it may be returned unpaid. Turning off debit-card and ATM coverage alone is not a guarantee that the checking account can never show a negative balance.

Fees can come from more than one party

If the bank or credit union declines or returns an item, it may assess an NSF fee under its disclosed terms. A merchant or biller may also charge a returned-item fee. Ask for the institution’s current fee schedule and the payee’s policy before cancelling coverage on an account used for rent, utilities, subscriptions, loan payments, or other automatic bills.

Pending and recurring payments need special attention

Changing the setting does not necessarily cancel a payment instruction you already gave a merchant. Review upcoming automatic debits and keep enough available funds to cover them, or contact the biller to change the payment method. Ask the institution how it applies a revocation to items that were authorized before the request but post afterward.

Questions to ask before you submit the change

  • Does this request revoke coverage for both ATM withdrawals and one-time debit-card purchases?
  • Are checks, ACH transfers, recurring debit payments, linked-account transfers, and overdraft lines controlled separately?
  • Will an ATM or debit transaction be declined, or could it still be paid under another service?
  • When exactly does the revocation become effective, and does it apply to pending items?
  • Could the institution charge an overdraft, NSF, transfer, or other account fee after the change?
  • Could a merchant or biller charge a returned-item fee if its payment is rejected?
  • How will the institution confirm that the setting was changed?

How to verify that the opt-out worked

  1. Check the account’s overdraft or debit-card settings after the effective time supplied by the institution.
  2. Read the confirmation for the transaction types covered; save it with your account records.
  3. Monitor available balance and pending transactions, especially before using an ATM or making a debit purchase.
  4. Review the next statement for any overdraft, NSF, transfer, or returned-item charge and compare it with the institution’s explanation.
  5. If the setting still appears active, contact the institution again, provide the original case number, and ask for escalation to a supervisor or complaints team.

If you were charged a fee or coverage was applied without your consent

Start by asking the bank or credit union to identify the transaction, the service used, the consent record, and the date its system says coverage was enabled. Explain whether you previously revoked consent or never opted in. Keep copies of statements, notices, secure messages, and confirmation numbers.

Federal rules require affirmative consent for fees on covered ATM and one-time debit-card overdraft services. The CFPB’s consumer guidance says that a customer can change their mind at any time by notifying the institution. If the institution does not resolve a fee or an alleged improper opt-in, you can submit a complaint through the CFPB’s consumer-help process after contacting the institution: CFPB overdraft-fee guidance. Include dates, the account type, the transaction type, what you requested, and the response you received.

“If you are enrolled in an overdraft protection program with your bank or credit union, you can change your mind at any time. Just notify them that you no longer want this coverage.” — Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, consumer guidance, last reviewed December 18, 2024.

A practical checklist for avoiding surprises afterward

  • Keep a buffer in the checking account for scheduled bills and transactions that have not posted yet.
  • Turn on low-balance and transaction alerts if your institution offers them; alerts do not themselves change overdraft consent.
  • Update merchants and billers if a recurring payment may be declined, rather than assuming the bank’s setting cancels the authorization.
  • Track checks, ACH debits, and recurring payments separately because they are not governed by the same federal opt-in rule as ATM and one-time debit transactions.
  • Recheck the account after the first statement cycle and report any charge that does not match the explanation you received.

When a partial opt-out may be preferable

Some institutions let you revoke only ATM and one-time debit-card coverage while retaining a separate transfer service from a linked account. That arrangement can avoid a declined debit purchase but may involve transfer fees or other terms. Other customers prefer every possible overdraft payment to stop, accepting that checks or automatic payments could be returned. Because the available choices and fees are institution-specific, ask for the alternatives in writing and choose based on how you use the account.

The key distinction is the payment outcome you are accepting: covered overdraft may result in a paid transaction and an overdraft-related charge; removing that consent can result in a decline for ATM or one-time debit transactions; checks, ACH items, and recurring debits may still be paid or returned under separate policies. Your bank or credit union must explain the controls attached to your particular account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Notify your bank or credit union that you revoke consent for ATM and one-time debit-card overdraft services, confirm the effective time, and ask about separate settings for checks, ACH, recurring payments, and linked-account protection. Keep the confirmation and monitor the account, because turning off the covered service can cause declines while other transactions may still generate overdraft, NSF, or returned-item fees under the institution’s rules.
