How to Turn Off Automatic Payments for Buy Now, Pay Later Plans

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop automatic payments, open the specific buy now, pay later (BNPL) order or loan, find its Autopay control, switch it off, and save the confirmation. If the option is missing, contact the provider immediately and ask how to revoke authorization for that plan. For a debit from your bank account, also contact your bank or credit union and follow its stop-payment procedure. Turning off autopay changes how you pay; it does not cancel the balance, change the due date, or end the loan.

The exact menu, notice period, and available manual-payment methods depend on the provider, plan type (such as Pay-in-4 or a monthly installment loan), country, and whether the money is taken from a card or bank account. The examples below are based on current US provider and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidance.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Turn off autopay without missing the next installment

  1. Sign in to the provider’s app or website. Use the account that holds the BNPL order or loan.
  2. Open the individual order, plan, or loan. Autopay is commonly controlled per transaction rather than by one account-wide switch.
  3. Find the payment setting. Look for labels such as Autopay, Automatic payments, or Manage payments.
  4. Disable it and confirm. Complete the final confirmation screen, then save the confirmation number, email, or screenshot.
  5. Schedule a replacement payment. Make each installment manually by its original due date using a payment method the provider accepts.
  6. If a debit is imminent, check its status. A payment already submitted for processing may still go through even after you change the setting.

If there is no self-service switch, contact the provider through its official support channel and say clearly that you revoke authorization for automatic payments on the identified plan. Ask what cutoff applies and how to make the next payment manually. For a bank-account debit, the CFPB recommends contacting both the company and your bank or credit union, then following up in writing. Its consumer guidance is specific to automatic payments from bank accounts, not every card arrangement or every country: CFPB instructions for stopping automatic payments.

What changes—and what does not—when autopay is off

Autopay is a collection method. Disabling it does not forgive the amount financed, cancel the purchase, pause installments, or move a due date. The CFPB states: “If you cancel an automatic payment on a loan, you still have to make payments on the loan using another payment method.” Continue paying the scheduled amount until the plan shows a zero balance.

  • Clear Print Quality: Displays high-resolution printing intended to remain legible through regular use and cleaning
  • The due date normally stays the same. Treat the date shown in the plan as the deadline unless the provider expressly changes it.
  • Late consequences still apply. Depending on the agreement, a late payment can trigger a fee, account restrictions, or credit reporting.
  • A replacement payment must clear. Merely removing a card or deleting a bank account does not count as paying.
  • More than one plan may need separate changes. A provider may give each order or loan its own Autopay setting.

After switching off automatic collection, set a calendar reminder several days before every due date. Keep the confirmation and payment receipts until the plan is closed and the next statement confirms the correct balance.

Provider instructions and important limits

Afterpay US Pay-in-4

For a US Pay-in-4 order, the official Afterpay “Disabling Autopay?” help page gives this path:

  1. Open the app and sign in.
  2. Select My Afterpay, then Orders.
  3. Open the relevant order.
  4. Select Turn off Autopay.
  5. Choose Turn Autopay Off to confirm.

The web portal offers the control from Orders after sign-in as well. The self-service app and web procedure is stated for Pay-in-4 only. The page directs Pay Monthly customers to the Support Center instead, so do not assume the Pay-in-4 menu applies to a monthly plan.

For a debit-card authorization, Afterpay asks customers to contact it at least three business days before the scheduled payment. Shorter notice may not stop the next debit. Once autopay is off, manual payment remains due on or before the due date. Afterpay’s US terms state a 10-day grace period on Pay-in-4 orders before a late fee may apply. That grace period and notice window are Afterpay US service terms, not universal BNPL rules.

PayPal Pay Monthly

For each US Pay Monthly loan, follow the steps in PayPal’s Questions about Pay Monthly Repayments help page:

  1. Sign in to PayPal.
  2. Select the specific Pay Monthly plan.
  3. Switch off the toggle beside Autopay.
  4. Select Confirm Autopay Off.
  5. Select Done.

PayPal says each loan must be handled individually. A missed Pay Monthly amount is added to the next monthly payment, and late payments may be reported to credit reporting agencies. Turning off the toggle therefore requires you to arrange a manual payment, not simply wait for the next statement.

PayPal Pay in 4

PayPal’s Pay in 4 repayment guidance explains how to find a plan and update its payment method, but the accessed help page does not provide a procedure for turning off autopay. Do not infer that changing or deleting a payment method disables automatic collection.

The same guidance says installments cannot be paused, suspended, or skipped once repayment has started. It also warns that an extra one-time payment made after 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on the day before a due date may not prevent the scheduled automatic payment from processing. If your plan screen does not show an Autopay-off control, contact PayPal support and ask for the current procedure and cutoff rather than relying on a last-minute payment.

Chase Pay in 4

Chase says in its Pay in 4 payment FAQs that automatic payments can be managed from the Pay in 4 summary or plan-details screen and can be turned off. Use the plan screen to verify the status after saving the change.

Scheduled installments still have to be paid by their due dates. Chase expressly warns that a missed payment can result in a $5 late fee. The fee and workflow are Chase terms for its Pay in 4 product, not a standard BNPL amount.

Affirm

Affirm’s Add or remove a payment method guidance describes managing payment methods in Settings and recommends replacing a method if it is set up for AutoPay. That information is not enough to conclude that removing a card turns off autopay or cancels the payment obligation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the current controls on the individual Affirm plan or contact Affirm support for an explicit autopay change. Keep paying according to the plan even if a card is removed, replaced, expired, or declined.

How to stop a bank-account debit

When the payment is pulled from a checking or savings account, the CFPB recommends a two-party process. This guidance applies to US bank-account debits; your rights and bank procedures can differ elsewhere.

1. Revoke authorization with the BNPL company

Tell the company that you revoke permission for automatic payments on the specific loan or order. Include your name, account identifier, payment amount, and the date of the next scheduled debit. Ask the company to confirm in writing that the instruction was received and whether a debit is already in processing.

2. Follow up in writing

Send the request through the provider’s secure message system, email, or another channel it identifies for notices. Save the message, timestamp, case number, and response. A phone call alone is harder to document if the debit later needs to be disputed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Notify the bank or credit union

Contact the institution that holds the account and provide a copy of the revocation. Ask which stop-payment option applies to this recurring electronic debit and how far in advance it must be submitted. A bank may charge a stop-payment fee. Ask about the fee before placing the order and request written confirmation of its duration and coverage.

4. Monitor the account

Watch for pending and completed transactions through the next scheduled date. If a debit appears after you revoked authorization, contact the bank promptly and ask about its process for disputing an unauthorized or improperly processed payment. Also notify the BNPL company and retain the transaction record.

A bank stop-payment order does not erase the BNPL debt. Make the installment through an accepted alternative—such as a manually submitted card payment, bank transfer, or other method shown by the provider—by the original due date.

Card payments, bank debits, and payment-method changes

The payment rail matters because the practical cancellation steps differ. A card-on-file autopay may be controlled entirely in the provider’s app, while an ACH or other bank-account debit may require a separate bank instruction. A replacement card, closed account, or removed payment method can also create a failed payment without formally revoking authorization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation What to do What not to assume
Autopay switch appears on the plan Turn it off, confirm, and save proof; schedule manual installments. That the balance or due date has changed.
No switch appears Contact the provider and ask for the plan-specific revocation process and cutoff. That deleting a card disables automatic collection.
Debit comes from a bank account Notify the provider and bank or credit union; ask about a stop-payment order and written confirmation. That a bank stop-payment order cancels the loan.
Payment is close to its due date Ask whether it is already processing and use the provider’s stated notice period. That a same-day change will always stop the debit.

Cutoffs, processing, and the risk of changing autopay too late

Automatic payments can enter processing before the date shown as the due date. A provider may therefore treat a setting change as applying to future installments only. The safest approach is to act several business days early, verify the status of the next payment, and keep enough funds available until the provider or bank confirms that the debit will not run.

The documented examples illustrate why a universal deadline is unsafe:

  • Chase requires scheduled payments to be made by their due dates even when autopay is turned off.

How to keep the plan current after autopay is disabled

Create a payment calendar

List every BNPL order or loan, installment amount, due date, and the account or card you will use. Set reminders at least three to five days ahead, plus one on the due date. Include a reminder to check that the payment posted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an accepted manual method

Open the plan’s payment screen and confirm which methods are available. Submit the exact installment, then retain the receipt or confirmation number. If you pay extra, verify how the provider applies overpayments; an extra payment may not substitute for a scheduled installment if processing has already begun.

Check the next statement

After the due date, confirm that the installment is marked paid, the remaining balance is correct, and no unexpected autopay transaction posted. Continue this check until the plan is fully repaid.

Protect your cash flow

Turning off autopay can prevent an unwanted withdrawal, but it also removes the automatic reminder built into collection. Keep the installment amount available and avoid relying on a card that may expire or a bank account that could be closed before the payment clears.

Troubleshooting common problems

The Autopay button is missing

Open the individual order or loan rather than a general wallet or account-settings page. Check whether the product is a different plan type, because a provider may support self-service changes for Pay-in-4 but require support for a monthly loan. If no control appears, contact the provider and document the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The next payment still shows as scheduled

Turning off future autopay may not cancel a debit already submitted for processing. Ask support whether the transaction is pending, what action can still be taken, and how to pay manually without creating a duplicate. Do not assume that a second payment will automatically stop the first.

A replacement card was added but autopay remains active

Adding a new card changes the funding source; it does not necessarily disable automatic collection. Look for a separate Autopay status and obtain confirmation that the intended plan—not merely the card—was changed.

The bank account was charged after revocation

Gather the provider’s confirmation, your written revocation, the bank notice, and the transaction details. Contact the bank promptly about its dispute or unauthorized-debit process, then ask the provider to correct its records. Keep making the underlying installment through another accepted method while the issue is reviewed.

You cannot make the manual payment

Contact the provider before the due date, explain the technical problem, and ask for a documented alternative. A failed attempt does not automatically extend the deadline. If the provider offers a payment arrangement, obtain the terms in writing.

Comparison checklist before you switch off autopay

Record these six details for each plan before making a change:

  1. Provider and region: Confirm that the instructions apply to your country and account.
  2. Plan type: Identify Pay-in-4, monthly installment, or another product.
  3. Control level: Determine whether the setting applies to one order or one loan, not the entire account.
  4. Payment rail: Note whether the debit is from a bank account, debit card, credit card, or another source.
  5. Notice period: Find the provider’s cutoff before the next installment.
  6. Manual options: Verify which replacement methods are accepted and when they post.

This checklist prevents the most common error: successfully changing a setting while overlooking another plan, another funding source, or the next installment’s deadline.

What to document

  • The date and time you turned off autopay or requested revocation.
  • The exact plan or order number.
  • Screenshots of the final confirmation and the displayed autopay status.
  • Support case numbers, messages, and the provider’s response.
  • Any bank stop-payment order, fee, coverage period, and confirmation.
  • Manual-payment receipts and the statement showing each installment posted.

These records help distinguish a canceled future debit from one that was already processing and give the bank or provider the information needed to investigate a disputed transaction.

US scope and changing provider menus

The workflows above come from US help pages for the named providers and US CFPB consumer guidance. Provider interfaces, eligibility rules, fees, grace periods, and notice windows can change. A page that applies to Pay-in-4 may not apply to a monthly loan from the same company, and a US process may not apply to an account in another country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before relying on a remembered menu path, open the current help page linked above and inspect the plan screen itself. If the labels differ, use the provider’s current support channel and ask for written confirmation of the autopay status and next-payment deadline.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
