How to turn a retirement corpus into reliable monthly income without running out of money

The most dependable way to turn retirement savings into a monthly paycheck is to combine income that continues for life with a deliberately managed withdrawal plan for the remaining gap. Start with essential spending, subtract pensions and other reliable payments already available, then decide how much of the shortfall your portfolio should fund and whether an income annuity belongs in the plan. There is no withdrawal percentage that guarantees every household will never run out of money.

A defined-contribution account is a pool of invested assets, not a lifetime-income promise. Its result depends on returns, inflation, withdrawals, taxes, time horizon and your decisions. A pension that pays a lifetime annuity addresses longevity risk differently: as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission explains, “If you have a pension plan that provides a lifetime annuity, it protects you against longevity risk, the risk of outliving your assets.”

What “reliable monthly income” really means

Reliability has two parts. First, some cash flow should continue even if markets perform poorly or you live longer than expected. Second, withdrawals from invested assets must be sized and reviewed so that spending does not outrun the remaining portfolio. These are separate jobs: an insurer’s contractual payment is not the same as selling investments to create a transfer.

In a defined-contribution plan or individual retirement account, you bear the investment risk. A balance can be too small for the full retirement period, and choosing a monthly amount does not turn that balance into a guarantee. Asset allocation should reflect your horizon, risk tolerance, financial situation and goals; simply moving everything to cash or bonds does not remove the possibility of depletion.

Use this framework as a planning process, not as an individualized recommendation. Account rules, health, household spending, beneficiaries, taxes and the strength of any insurer all change the appropriate choices.

1. Calculate the monthly spending gap

Build the income plan from spending rather than from a headline account balance. Separate expenses that must be paid from those you can postpone or reduce, and use after-tax amounts so that the transfer you schedule matches the money you can actually spend.

  1. List essential and discretionary spending. Include housing, utilities, food, insurance, medical costs, transportation, debt payments, taxes and irregular annual bills. Keep discretionary travel, gifts and large purchases visible rather than hiding them inside an average.
  2. Record reliable income already available. Include a pension or other payment that the governing contract or benefit rules make dependable. Keep investment withdrawals in a separate line; they are a funding source, not guaranteed income.
  3. Calculate the gap. Subtract reliable after-tax income from the amount your household expects to spend. A positive gap is the amount that must be supplied by portfolio withdrawals, an income contract, additional work or lower spending.
  4. Stress-test the timing. Note when each expense and income starts, stops or changes. A temporary bridge need is different from a gap that must be filled for the rest of both spouses’ lives.

This calculation gives you a target to fund. It does not tell you that the target is safe at any particular percentage of the corpus; that conclusion requires assumptions about returns, inflation, taxes, withdrawals and longevity that differ by household.

2. Turn the gap into a repeatable withdrawal plan

The SEC’s Investor.gov guidance tells investors to “Create a plan for how and when to take money out of your investment accounts.” Put that instruction into an operating routine:

  1. Set a planned amount and date. Decide whether transfers will be monthly, quarterly or on another schedule that matches bills. State whether the amount is a gross distribution or the net cash you want after withholding and taxes.
  2. Choose what will be sold. Identify the account and investments that will fund each transfer. Selling one holding repeatedly can change diversification and may create a tax bill, so coordinate sales with your rebalancing policy.
  3. Account for taxes before spending. Traditional-account distributions are generally taxable except for previously taxed basis and certain tax-free amounts. Estimate withholding or set aside cash for the eventual liability rather than treating the gross distribution as spendable.
  4. Document a flexible rule for changes. Decide in advance what would cause a raise, pause or reduction, such as a major spending change, a large portfolio decline, a new guaranteed payment or a tax-law change. The rule should be written before a stressful market event.
  5. Review after each tax year. Reconcile actual spending, taxes, investment performance and withdrawals after preparing the return. Investor.gov recommends reviewing the withdrawal plan annually; also review it when health, employment, household composition or a contract changes.

A process prevents a common error: setting a transfer once and assuming the original account balance will support it forever. The amount may need to change as your circumstances and the portfolio change.

3. Understand what a portfolio withdrawal can and cannot do

It preserves access to capital

With a portfolio approach, assets generally remain available subject to account and investment rules. You can change the amount, sell different holdings, leave assets to beneficiaries or use money for an unexpected expense. That flexibility has value, but each sale can affect diversification and taxes.

It leaves you exposed to investment and longevity risk

Withdrawals reduce the assets that can recover after a market decline. A long retirement gives poor returns, inflation or high spending more time to damage the balance. No source in this guide establishes a universal “safe” annual rate or success probability, so do not present a fixed percentage as a guarantee.

It requires an allocation you can maintain

Asset allocation should support the time horizon and risk you can tolerate while preserving enough growth potential for later-life spending. Holding more cash or bonds can reduce some price volatility, but it does not by itself guarantee that withdrawals will last. A diversified, rebalanced portfolio and a written spending rule work together; neither substitutes for the other.

4. Compare portfolio withdrawals with lifetime-income annuities

An annuity is a contract with an insurer. Depending on the contract, it can provide payments for a specified period, for your life, or for the lives of you and a spouse or partner. The promise is only as strong as the issuing insurer’s financial strength and claims-paying ability; it is not federal deposit insurance or a government guarantee. Review the SEC’s Annuities guidance before committing money.

Comparison axis Portfolio withdrawals Lifetime-income annuity
Income certainty Depends on remaining assets, investment performance and withdrawal decisions; a defined-contribution balance does not guarantee adequacy. The contract can specify periodic payments for a term or for life, depending on the selected option.
Access and flexibility Assets remain available subject to account and investment rules; sales and withdrawals affect diversification and taxes. Access may be limited after annuitization; deferred contracts can impose surrender charges or contract adjustments.
Longevity protection Assets can be depleted if withdrawals and circumstances outstrip resources; no universal safe rate is established here. A lifetime payout can address longevity risk, subject to contract terms and the insurer’s claims-paying ability.
Costs and guarantees Costs depend on the investments and account expenses selected; this framework does not establish a fee comparison. Review explicit fees or limits on returns, surrender charges, payout terms and insurer strength.
Survivor and estate choices Depend on the account and beneficiary arrangements. Death benefits and joint-life options vary and may reduce income or add cost; verify the actual contract.
Tax timing Account type and withdrawal timing matter; required minimum distributions may set a minimum withdrawal. Tax treatment depends on the contract and funding source. Annuity distributions can be taxable, and tax deferral inside a tax-deferred plan may add no extra advantage.

Annuitizing only part of the corpus can create a floor for essential bills while leaving the remainder liquid. Annuitizing all assets can provide more contractual income but sacrifices more access and estate flexibility. The right comparison is between the specific contracts and your actual spending gap, not between a generic “annuity” and a generic portfolio.

5. Evaluate an annuity before buying

Identify the payment promise

Read whether payments last for a fixed term, your life, a joint life, or another period. Check when payments start, whether they are level or have an adjustment feature, and what happens if you die early. A higher payment may reflect the absence of a refund or survivor benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price every form of access

Ask how much principal can be withdrawn, when surrender charges end, and whether a withdrawal reduces future income, a death benefit or a living benefit. Deferred contracts may apply surrender charges or other adjustments. A contract that appears inexpensive can still be costly if it prevents access when your needs change.

Examine fees, riders and investment risk

Variable annuities can lose money and may carry significant fees. Optional living-benefit or death-benefit riders can add cost and conditions; an illustration is not an unconditional guarantee. Review the prospectus and contract rather than relying on a sales summary.

Check the insurer

Compare the issuing insurer’s financial strength and claims-paying ability. State guaranty arrangements, where they exist, are not a substitute for evaluating the company, and the payment promise is not backed by the federal government.

Compare an exchange with keeping the existing contract

If replacing an annuity, compare both contracts’ fees, rates, guarantees, surrender schedules, payout choices and risks. Exiting the old contract can trigger a surrender charge, while the new contract can start another surrender period. A tax-free exchange does not make an economically poor replacement harmless.

6. Use a QLAC only for a clearly defined later-life income need

A qualified longevity annuity contract (QLAC) is a type of fixed deferred-income annuity bought with qualifying retirement-account funds. It begins payments at a future date you select, creating income for later life rather than current bills. The SEC describes the structure in its QLAC glossary entry.

After purchase, you generally cannot access the purchase amount. If you die before payments begin, there may be no death benefit unless you paid for an optional benefit. Those features make the decision highly dependent on liquidity, health, survivor needs and the value you place on income that starts later.

Questions to answer before committing money

  • How will near-term expenses be funded without the QLAC premium?
  • Would a spouse need a joint-life payment, and how would that change the income?
  • Is a death benefit worth the lower income or added cost?
  • What happens if your health, housing or family-support needs change before the start date?
  • Does the contract’s insurer have the financial strength you are willing to accept?

A QLAC is therefore a later-life income floor, not a default replacement for a liquid retirement portfolio.

7. Coordinate withdrawals with required minimum distributions

Under current IRS guidance, traditional IRA owners and most retirement-plan participants generally must begin required minimum distributions (RMDs) at age 73. The IRS FAQ was updated December 10, 2024, and account-specific rules can change. A workplace-plan participant may be able to delay distributions until retirement, except for a 5% owner, subject to the plan’s terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The first RMD can generally be delayed until April 1 of the year after the year you reach the applicable starting age. Delaying can mean two taxable RMDs in that following calendar year: the postponed first distribution and the second year’s distribution due by December 31. Compare the tax effect with the cash-flow benefit before choosing the delay.

RMDs are generally taxable income, except to the extent a distribution represents previously taxed basis or a tax-free amount such as a qualified designated Roth distribution. Beneficiary status, Roth versus traditional ownership, employment status and plan documents can alter the result. Use the current IRS RMD FAQs and qualified tax advice for your exact account.

RMDs are a tax constraint, not a spending target

An RMD may exceed what you want to spend, or it may be smaller than your planned monthly gap. Decide where the distribution will go: spending, a taxable investment account, a charitable strategy where eligible, or another permitted destination. Include withholding and the effect on future tax brackets in the annual review.

8. Build the monthly paycheck

Once the gap, withdrawal rule and any annuity payment are known, turn them into an operating system that is easy to monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a dedicated receiving account. Direct annuity payments and scheduled portfolio distributions to one account, then pay recurring bills from it. Keep the account’s purpose clear so a market sale is not mistaken for new income.
  2. Match timing to obligations. Schedule transfers before predictable bills and set aside money for annual premiums, property taxes and irregular medical costs. Do not increase the permanent monthly amount to cover a one-time expense.
  3. Separate gross and net figures. Record the distribution before withholding, the tax withheld and the amount deposited. This makes the annual tax reconciliation possible.
  4. Define who can change the amount. Write the trigger and approval process for a raise, pause or reduction. A documented rule reduces the chance of changing spending solely because of a short-term market move.
  5. Keep beneficiary and emergency information current. Account registrations, annuity elections and beneficiary forms should reflect the household’s current wishes. Contractual survivor choices cannot be fixed after a death.

9. Review the plan every year

Schedule the review after the tax return is prepared, then revisit sooner when a major event occurs. Bring the following checklist:

  • Actual spending versus the amount used to set the monthly transfer.
  • Portfolio value, investment performance, diversification and rebalancing needs.
  • Total withdrawals, taxes withheld, realized gains and the next year’s expected tax bill.
  • RMD deadlines and amounts for every traditional IRA and retirement plan.
  • Annuity payment records, surrender-charge dates, rider costs and insurer-strength information.
  • Changes in health, housing, work, marital status, dependents or beneficiary designations.
  • Whether essential expenses are still covered by reliable income plus a sustainable funding plan.

When circumstances change, update the written plan rather than quietly increasing withdrawals. A review is also the time to test whether a proposed annuity purchase would improve the income floor enough to justify the liquidity and estate trade-offs.

10. Common failure modes and practical fixes

Starting with a percentage instead of spending

Problem: A household picks a percentage of the opening balance without identifying the bills it must cover or how taxes will be paid.

Fix: Rebuild the plan from the after-tax spending gap, then document the amount, timing, assets and review triggers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating an account balance as a paycheck guarantee

Problem: A stable-looking balance is assumed to support the same transfer indefinitely.

Buying an annuity without reading access terms

Problem: The buyer focuses on the quoted payment and misses surrender charges, reduced death benefits, rider costs or the insurer’s claims-paying ability.

Fix: Read the contract, prospectus and surrender schedule; compare the proposed replacement with the existing arrangement before exchanging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a QLAC for near-term expenses

Problem: Money needed in the next few years is committed to a contract that starts later and may not be accessible.

Fix: Fund near-term spending and an appropriate liquid reserve first. Consider a QLAC only for a later-life gap you can genuinely leave untouched.

Delaying the first RMD without modeling the second

Problem: The April 1 delay is chosen without recognizing that two RMDs may fall in the next calendar year.

Fix: Compare both timing choices using projected taxable income, withholding and cash needs, then verify the current IRS rule for the specific account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Making the final decision

A durable retirement-income plan has three visible numbers: the household’s after-tax monthly spending target, reliable income that does not depend on selling investments, and the planned amount drawn from the portfolio or supplied by an income contract. It also has a written process for taxes, asset sales, beneficiary choices and annual review.

Use a portfolio for flexibility, an annuity for contractually defined income, or a combination when each part solves a different risk. Keep the distinctions clear, verify every contract term and current tax rule, and adjust the plan when the household—not a generic percentage—changes.
