Open or confirm the receiving account, copy the old account’s registration and details exactly, submit the receiving firm’s transfer form, and ask both firms which holdings can move without being sold. Most ordinary brokerage-to-brokerage transfers use the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS), but unsupported securities, ownership changes, retirement registrations, fees, and incomplete paperwork can change the process.
Do not assume every investment will arrive unchanged or that a published time estimate is a promise. Before submitting, get written answers about asset eligibility, taxes, charges, timing, and the treatment of fractional shares. After completion, compare the first statement from the new firm with the final statement from the old firm.

What a brokerage-account transfer does
A transfer moves an existing investment account and, when eligible, its securities and cash from one brokerage firm to another. An eligible security can usually move “in kind,” meaning you keep the same position rather than selling it first. The account registration—such as an individual taxable account, joint account, IRA, custodial account, or margin account—also matters. The receiving firm must be able to support that registration and the assets inside it.
Moving an account is different from closing it and withdrawing the proceeds. A sale can create a taxable gain or loss in a taxable account, and changing an account owner or account type can require additional documentation. A transfer therefore starts with an eligibility and paperwork check, not with selling everything.

Before you submit anything
Confirm the receiving account and registration
Identify the account you are moving: taxable individual, joint, IRA or other retirement account, custodial, margin, or another registration. Ask the new firm whether it accepts that exact type and whether the title, owners, tax identification details, and authorized persons must match the old account. A change in ownership or registration is not a routine clerical edit; it can require separate forms and extend processing.
Gather an accurate statement
Use a recent statement from the old firm as your source of truth. Have the old firm’s legal name, account number, registration or account title, and the identity information requested by the receiving firm ready. Keep a copy of the statement and any transfer forms you submit. Do not “standardize” abbreviations or alter an owner’s name to make two forms look alike.
Inventory every holding
List stocks, exchange-traded products, mutual funds, bonds, options, cash, and any less-common investments in the account. Ask the receiving firm to review the list and identify positions it will not accept. Eligibility is security-specific and depends on both firms’ procedures.

Step-by-step: transfer the account
1. Start with the new firm’s transfer form
Investor.gov summarizes the direction of the process this way: “All brokerage account transfers start and end with your new firm.” The receiving firm supplies its Transfer Instruction Form (TIF) or equivalent electronic workflow, validates the request, and generally routes it through ACATS when that system is available.
- Open or verify the destination account. Make sure the account type and registration are the ones you intend to receive.
- Choose a full or partial transfer. A full transfer moves the eligible account; a partial transfer specifies the positions or cash to move. Ask how residual assets will be handled if you choose a full transfer.
- Enter the old-firm information exactly. Copy the account number, registration, and owner details from the statement.
- Attach requested documents. The firm may request a statement, identity documentation, trust or custodial documents, or retirement-account paperwork.
- Review before signing. Confirm that every requested holding and the transfer type are correct, then submit through the receiving firm’s approved channel.
Investor guidance identifies incorrect or incomplete transfer forms as a major source of delay. A missing digit, mismatched account title, or omitted signature can cause rejection or a restart.

2. Resolve securities that cannot move in kind
Ask for a position-by-position answer before the request is sent. Potential problem holdings include:
- Fractional shares, which generally cannot be transferred to another brokerage.
- Funds that the new firm does not offer or cannot custody.
- Firm-exclusive securities.
- Private-placement limited partnerships and other privately held positions.
- Annuities.
- Bankrupt or otherwise restricted securities.
For each unsupported position, ask the firms to state your choices in writing. You may be able to leave it at the old firm, sell it and transfer the cash, or use another method supported by the firms. There is no universal solution: the correct choice depends on the security, account type, and each firm’s rules.
A sale in a taxable account can realize a capital gain or loss. Do not liquidate a position solely to simplify the form until you understand the tax and investment consequences; seek advice appropriate to your circumstances when necessary. Selling inside a retirement account may have different tax treatment, but the receiving custodian still has to approve the process.
3. Ask about fees before filing
Request a complete fee explanation from both firms:
- The old firm’s transfer-out, account-closing, or account-specific charges.
- Any incoming-transfer fee at the new firm.
- Retirement-account custody or maintenance charges.
- Costs associated with leaving a residual position or cash balance behind.
- Ongoing commissions, account fees, or other charges at the new firm.
- Whether a current fee waiver or reimbursement is available, and its conditions.
There is no standard fee amount that applies to every brokerage or account. Get the amount, timing, and conditions directly from the firms before you authorize the transfer.

4. Submit and obtain a tracking reference
After submission, ask the receiving firm when it accepted the request, whether it was sent through ACATS, and how you can check its status. Keep the confirmation, reference number, and a copy of your submitted form. Continue monitoring messages from both firms; a request can require a response from you even after the initial form is accepted.

5. Respond quickly to rejections or exceptions
If the request is rejected or stalls, ask which exact field, account-registration mismatch, or asset caused the problem and what correction is required. Correct the form rather than sending an unrelated new request. Investor.gov warns that an unresolved ACATS issue can be purged and restarted if the problem is not addressed within the applicable response period.
6. Reconcile after the transfer
When the new account appears complete, compare the old firm’s final statement with the new firm’s first statement. Check:
- Security names and share quantities.
- Cash and money-market balances.
- Account registration and owners.
- Open positions that were supposed to move.
- Dividends, interest, sale proceeds, or other payments that arrived after the transfer.
- Cost-basis information and transaction records.
Ask both firms how they will deliver late-arriving income, residual cash, tax forms, and cost-basis data. The operational method for cost-basis delivery is not uniform for every firm and asset, so do not assume that a complete position transfer means every historical record has already appeared.
ACATS and transfer timing
ACATS is the common electronic system for brokerage-to-brokerage transfers, but it is not universal. Transfers outside ACATS, transfers involving some institutions, and transfers containing special assets can take longer or require manual steps.

| Timing statement | Context and qualification |

| Approximately three to five business days | SEC Investor Bulletin dated June 27, 2014, for an uncomplicated ACATS transfer after the new firm enters the request; a dated estimate, not a current guarantee. |
| No more than six business days | Separate legacy SEC guidance describing an ACATS processing window; the page’s publication date was not shown in the reviewed material. |
| Two to three weeks | Separate legacy SEC guidance describing a smooth overall transfer, subject to account type, holdings, and the institutions involved. |
| Two business days | Current Investor.gov instruction accessed October 13, 2026: an ACATS request may be purged if the old firm takes no action or an issue is not resolved within that period, requiring the receiving firm to restart it. |
These figures describe different stages and sources, so they should not be combined into a promised completion date. Ask the receiving firm for a current estimate based on your account type and holdings. If the estimate passes without progress, request a status explanation from both firms and ask whether the request is pending, rejected, or being rebuilt.
Choosing between an in-kind transfer and handling unsupported assets
When every holding is eligible, an in-kind transfer usually avoids selling positions solely for administrative convenience. When a position is not eligible, compare the available route on four dimensions before deciding.
| Decision factor | In-kind transfer | Sell or otherwise handle the unsupported position |
|---|---|---|
| Asset eligibility | Works only for securities and registrations accepted by the receiving firm. | May resolve an unsupported security, but the firms must explain whether sale proceeds can be transferred and how. |
| Tax consequences | Does not require a sale of an eligible position. | A sale in a taxable account can realize a gain or loss; obtain advice suited to your situation. |
| Fees and residue | May still involve transfer or closing charges and may leave ineligible assets behind. | Can involve trading costs, transfer charges, or a residual account that must later be closed. |
| Time and administration | Usually follows the standard workflow when ACATS and the registration are supported. | Special assets, manual processing, or a separate sale can add steps and delay completion. |
Do not treat liquidation as the default. For a private placement, annuity, restricted or bankrupt security, or a fund unavailable at the new firm, ask whether it can remain at the old firm and how future statements, distributions, and eventual disposition will be handled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fractional shares and residual balances
Fractional shares generally cannot be delivered to another brokerage as fractional units. The old firm may sell the fractional interest and send cash, or its procedure may require another form of settlement. Ask when the sale will occur, whether the cash will arrive separately, and how the transaction will appear on your records.

Special account situations
Taxable accounts
Preserving eligible positions in kind can avoid a sale triggered solely by the transfer. If an unsupported security must be sold, consider the realized gain or loss, holding period, and timing with qualified tax help where appropriate. Retain statements and trade confirmations from the old firm even after the account is closed.
IRAs and other retirement accounts
Confirm that the new custodian accepts the same retirement-account type and that the transfer method preserves the intended registration. Ask about retirement custody fees, required forms, and how any unsupported holding will be treated. Do not change the account type or take possession of funds without understanding the tax and reporting consequences.
Margin accounts
Ask whether the receiving firm approves margin and whether your existing positions and borrowing arrangements are eligible. A firm may require a new margin agreement, different collateral rules, or repayment of a debit before accepting the account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsJoint, custodial, trust, and other registered accounts
Every owner, trustee, custodian, or authorized person may need to match the old record. If the new account has different owners or authority, expect extra documentation and a longer review rather than assuming the standard individual-account form will work.
How to monitor a delayed transfer
- Check the reference number. Ask the receiving firm whether the request was accepted and entered into ACATS.
- Identify the blocked stage. Determine whether the delay is caused by incomplete identity information, a registration mismatch, an unsupported security, missing signatures, or a response pending from the old firm.
- Correct one issue at a time. Supply the exact document or amendment requested and confirm that the firm attached it to the existing request.
- Watch the two-business-day escalation point. If an ACATS issue remains unresolved within the period cited by Investor.gov, ask whether the request is at risk of being purged and restarted.
- Keep access to the old account. Do not discard statements or assume the old account is closed until all positions, cash, and late payments are accounted for.
Questions to ask the receiving firm
Use these questions before and after submitting the form:
- Can you explain the transfer process for this exact account registration?
- Which documents and identity details do you need?
- Which of my listed holdings will you accept in kind?
- How will you handle fractional shares, proprietary funds, private placements, annuities, bankrupt securities, or other positions you cannot custody?
- What fees will the old firm and the new firm charge, including retirement-account charges?
- Do you currently waive or reimburse any transfer fee, and what conditions apply?
- Will this request use ACATS? If not, what additional steps are required?
- What is the anticipated timing for this account type and these holdings?
- What issues could delay the request, and how will I be notified?
- How will late dividends, interest, sale proceeds, tax forms, and cost-basis information reach me?
- What reference number should I use when requesting a status update?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with the old firm instead of using the receiving firm’s transfer form.
- Guessing at an account number, legal name, registration, or owner spelling.
- Assuming every stock, fund, fractional share, annuity, or private investment is transferable.
- Selling positions before checking tax consequences and the receiving firm’s acceptance rules.
- Choosing a firm based only on a transfer-fee promotion while overlooking ongoing account or custody fees.
- Treating a dated timing estimate as a guaranteed completion date.
- Closing access to the old account before checking the final statement and residual payments.
- Failing to ask how historical cost basis and late-arriving income will be delivered.
What a completed transfer should look like
A transfer is operationally complete when the receiving account shows the expected registration, eligible securities, share quantities, and cash, and the old firm’s final records explain any residual asset or payment. Save the old and new statements, transfer confirmations, and messages about unsupported positions. If anything is missing, describe the exact security, quantity, cash amount, or record to both firms and request a written resolution path.
This is general U.S.-oriented investor information, not individualized legal, tax, or investment advice. Firm policies, fees, eligible assets, and timing change, so confirm current terms directly with the two firms involved.
