Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can move shares from Groww to another broker without selling them. Groww demat accounts are held with CDSL, so a CDSL-to-CDSL move can usually be submitted online through CDSL Easiest when the receiving broker supports it. A physical Delivery Instruction Slip (DIS) is the fallback, and it is commonly required when the destination is with NSDL or when either broker requires paper instructions. If you are moving every holding and want to shut the Groww demat account, use a closure-cum-transfer request rather than a normal partial transfer.
Open and verify the receiving demat account first, collect its DP ID/client ID or BO ID, and check the destination depository. Then choose the route below, submit each holding with its 12-digit ISIN and quantity, and wait for the securities to appear in the new account before cancelling access or closing the old one.

What you need before starting
A transfer is an off-market movement between demat accounts. It is different from selling shares in Groww and buying them again at the new broker. The source and destination accounts must be identified precisely, and the holder details must match the records held by the depositories.

Confirm the receiving account
- Complete the new broker’s account opening and verification process.
- Ask whether the account is with CDSL or NSDL.
- Obtain the destination DP ID and client ID, or the complete BO ID where the broker uses that format.
- Ask whether the broker accepts CDSL Easiest transfers and whether it requires a CMR (Client Master Report) or another account-proof document.
Prepare the holdings list
For every security you intend to move, record the exact 12-digit ISIN, the quantity and, if requested by the form, the transfer reason. Use the ISIN shown in your demat statement rather than relying only on a company name: different share classes, partly paid securities and corporate-action variants can have different ISINs.

Check the source-account details
Groww states that “Groww demat accounts are in CDSL (Central Depository Services Limited).” Make sure the name, PAN and other holder details in the receiving account are compatible with the Groww account. A mismatch can cause the instruction to be rejected or held for clarification.
Choose the correct transfer route
| Route | Destination suitability | Does Groww stay open? | Authentication and paperwork | Published timing guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CDSL Easiest (online) | CDSL destination when the receiving broker supports the service | Yes, unless you separately close it | Online beneficiary setup, ISIN and quantity entry, then the required OTP/PIN and broker or depository authentication | Up to two working days in Groww’s described process; requests after 3:30 pm needing same-day execution are not processed that day. Saturdays and CDSL holidays are excluded. |
| Physical DIS | CDSL or NSDL destination, subject to both brokers’ instructions | Yes for a normal partial transfer | Signed Delivery Instruction Slip submitted to Groww; the broker may ask for supporting account proof | Groww’s general guide gives an estimate of three to five days. This is not a guaranteed service level. |
| Closure-cum-transfer | When all balances are moved and the Groww demat account is to be closed; use the form and route specified for the destination depository | No, after the closure is completed | Closure-cum-transfer form, transfer details and any required CMR or physical documents | Groww’s inbound-transfer guidance gives seven to 10 working days for an NSDL-to-CDSL closure-cum-transfer after the broker receives the documents. The estimate is route-specific and not a guarantee. |
Do not select the online route merely because both accounts are yours. The destination broker must support the CDSL Easiest workflow, and the depository pairing must be compatible. If the receiving account is with NSDL, ask both brokers whether a physical DIS or a closure-cum-transfer form is required before you submit anything.
How to transfer online with CDSL Easiest
This route is for a CDSL source account such as Groww and a CDSL destination that accepts CDSL Easiest. Menu names can vary slightly as CDSL and brokers update their interfaces, but the sequence is consistent.

- Open the destination demat account. Finish verification with the new broker. Do not submit a transfer to an account that is still pending activation.
- Collect the destination identifiers. Copy the DP ID and client ID or BO ID exactly as supplied by the new broker. Confirm the account holder name and the destination depository.
- Register the Groww account for CDSL Easiest. Use CDSL’s registration process and provide the source demat details requested on the registration screen. Complete any verification sent to the registered mobile number or email.
- Add the receiving account as a trusted beneficiary or account. CDSL Easiest may require beneficiary approval before an off-market instruction can be submitted. Enter the receiving DP and client details without adding spaces or transposed digits.
- Create the transfer instruction. For each security, enter the 12-digit ISIN, the quantity, the transfer reason and the target account details. Review the list against your latest Groww statement before continuing.
- Authenticate the request. Complete the OTP, PIN or other authentication requested by CDSL Easiest, and complete any confirmation that Groww or the depository sends afterward.
- Monitor both accounts. Groww’s described online process may take up to two working days. A request received after 3:30 pm that requires same-day execution is not processed that day, and Saturdays and CDSL holidays are excluded from the stated handling window. Check the destination demat ledger for each ISIN and quantity after processing.
What the online status means
A submitted instruction is not the same as a credited holding. Keep the acknowledgement or transaction reference until every line item appears in the destination account. If one ISIN is rejected while others complete, read the rejection reason and correct only the affected instruction; do not create duplicate requests for securities already credited.
How to transfer with a physical DIS
Use this route when the destination broker does not support CDSL Easiest, when the destination is with NSDL, or when either broker specifically asks for paper instructions.
- Request the correct form. Ask Groww for a Delivery Instruction Slip. If you are closing the account and moving all balances, request the closure-cum-transfer form instead. Use the broker’s current form rather than an old downloaded copy.
- Identify the transfer mode. The form may distinguish an off-market transfer from an inter-depository transfer. Select the mode that matches the source and destination depositories, following Groww’s and the receiving broker’s instructions.
- Enter the destination details. Write the receiving DP ID, client ID or BO ID, account-holder details and each 12-digit ISIN with its quantity. If the form asks for a reason, use the applicable reason shown by the broker.
- Sign exactly as registered. All holders should sign in the required places, using signatures that match the demat account. For joint accounts, follow the recorded signing pattern.
- Submit and retain proof. Send the completed DIS or closure-cum-transfer documents to Groww using the submission method it specifies. Keep a scanned copy, courier receipt or branch acknowledgement and the date Groww received the documents.
- Wait for credit before closing access. Groww’s general offline-transfer explanation gives three to five days as an estimate. For an NSDL-to-CDSL closure-cum-transfer, Groww’s inbound-transfer guidance gives seven to 10 working days after document receipt. These are estimates, not guaranteed deadlines.
Groww’s closure form states: “Submit a duly filled up transfer form (off market instruction slip) if the balances are to be transferred to another A/c.” That instruction applies to a closure request in which the remaining securities are being moved rather than sold.

CDSL and NSDL: which combination are you using?
| Source | Destination | Likely route | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| CDSL (Groww) | CDSL | CDSL Easiest if the destination broker supports it; otherwise physical DIS | Beneficiary registration, OTP/PIN requirements and any broker-specific cut-off |
| CDSL (Groww) | NSDL | Often a physical inter-depository DIS or another broker-prescribed process | Correct inter-depository mode, destination DP details and whether a CMR is required |
| NSDL | CDSL | Usually a physical DIS or closure-cum-transfer process handled by the relevant brokers | Each broker’s form, document-receipt date and the longer route estimate where applicable |
Depository rules and broker workflows can change. Get written confirmation of the required form and destination details before signing, especially for an inter-depository move or a full-account closure.
Documents and identifiers checklist
- Destination DP ID and client ID, or BO ID.
- The destination depository name: CDSL or NSDL.
- A list of every 12-digit ISIN and quantity being transferred.
- Account-holder names and the signing pattern recorded in the demat accounts.
- A signed DIS or closure-cum-transfer form for the offline route.
- A CMR or equivalent proof of the destination account if Groww or the receiving broker asks for it. Groww says its CMR copy is used when transferring securities or closing another demat account and moving securities.
- Your latest demat statement and the submission acknowledgement, retained until the transfer is visible.
Charges: what is known and what must be confirmed
Transfer costs depend on the route, the depository pairing and the broker handling the instruction. Groww’s transfer guidance says the source broker may charge for a transfer, so obtain a current quote before submitting a DIS or closure request. The following figures are published by Groww, but they should not be treated as a universal transfer tariff.
| Published figure | How Groww describes it | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| ₹16.5 | Groww’s current pricing page lists a DP charge per sell transaction | This is associated with a sell transaction; do not assume it is the fee for an off-market transfer. |
| ₹3.50 (₹3.25 for women) | Groww’s current pricing page lists a depository charge | Confirm the transaction type and applicability with Groww before relying on the figure. |
| First 10 DIS leaves free | Groww’s current pricing page | Applies to the stated DIS-leaf allowance; it does not establish that every transfer instruction is free. |
| Additional 10 DIS leaves: ₹100 plus courier | Groww’s current pricing page | Check whether your request requires additional leaves and confirm the current courier amount. |
Neither a CDSL Easiest submission nor a physical transfer should be assumed free or charged at the same rate as a sale. Ask Groww and the receiving broker for the current amount, any per-instruction or per-ISIN fee, courier cost and applicable taxes before you send documents.

Partial transfer versus closure-cum-transfer
Leave Groww open after moving selected holdings
A normal off-market transfer can move only the securities you select. The Groww demat account remains open, so you can retain other holdings or use the account later. Confirm that no pending pledge, lien, settlement or corporate-action item blocks the securities you selected.
Close Groww after moving everything
Use closure-cum-transfer when all balances are being moved and you want the old demat account closed. Submit the closure form together with the off-market transfer instruction and any destination-account proof requested. Wait until every security is credited to the new account and any cash or other balance is resolved before treating the closure as complete.
Groww separately states that an idle demat account has no annual maintenance charge. Closing can still be appropriate for administrative simplicity, but it removes immediate access to the old account. Groww says reopening with the same PAN after closure takes at least five to seven days, subject to its conditions.

Common problems and how to fix them
The destination account is rejected
Recheck the DP ID, client ID or BO ID, the CDSL/NSDL selection and the account-holder name. Ask the receiving broker for a fresh CMR or account confirmation if the identifiers do not match its records. Do not alter a submitted instruction without first confirming whether it is pending or already rejected.
The online request remains pending
Check whether you submitted after the 3:30 pm cut-off, on a Saturday or on a CDSL holiday. Review the CDSL Easiest status, complete any outstanding OTP/PIN authentication and ask Groww whether broker approval is still required. Keep the reference number for escalation.
The paper form is returned
Typical correctable causes include an incomplete ISIN, quantity that exceeds the available free balance, an incorrect inter-depository mode, a missing holder signature or a signature that differs from the registered specimen. Ask Groww to identify the exact defect, correct the form, and obtain a new acknowledgement date.
Only some securities arrive
Compare the destination ledger with your submitted ISIN-and-quantity list. A single security can fail because of a lock-in, pledge, lien, corporate-action restriction or data-entry error even when the rest of the instruction succeeds. Request the rejection reason for that line item rather than resubmitting the entire list.
The stated time has passed and nothing is credited
Count the relevant working days from the date the broker received and accepted the instruction, excluding the stated Saturdays and CDSL holidays for the online estimate. For a paper request, use your delivery acknowledgement to establish receipt. Then contact Groww and the destination broker with the transaction reference, ISINs and acknowledgement; ask which party is holding the request and what correction is needed.
Verification checklist after the transfer
- Open the destination demat ledger and confirm every ISIN.
- Match each credited quantity with the quantity authorised.
- Check that the holder name and account identifiers are correct.
- Save the destination statement, transfer reference and Groww acknowledgement.
- If you requested closure, obtain confirmation that the Groww demat account is actually closed rather than merely inactive.
- Only after credit and closure confirmation should you discard physical forms or stop monitoring the old account.
Tax and record-keeping caution
A direct demat transfer is documented as an off-market movement, but the material available here does not establish a universal tax treatment or a tax figure. Keep acquisition dates, quantities, purchase prices, corporate-action records and the transfer acknowledgements. Ask a qualified tax professional or consult current tax-authority guidance if you need to determine reporting or cost-basis treatment for your circumstances.
