Select the savings-account credit option, enter the destination account details exactly, attach the PPF passbook and either a copy of the first page of the destination bank passbook or a cancelled cheque, and complete the office’s identity verification. India Post describes this as part of closing the matured account; it is not an online NEFT/RTGS instruction for depositing money into an active PPF.
What the transfer actually is
A PPF maturity transfer is a payment request made when you close a matured account. The post office calculates the amount payable under the scheme, processes the closure application, and credits the destination savings account you specify. You are not “moving” an active PPF account, and you are not using a bank-transfer command to add money to PPF.

For a Post Office account, the key document is India Post’s SB-7A Application for Closure of Account on Maturity. India Post’s scheme guidance says that a depositor seeking maturity value in a bank account should submit the closure form with a copy of the first page of the bank passbook or a cancelled cheque.

Check that the PPF account has matured
The 15-financial-year rule
The National Savings Institute describes PPF maturity as occurring after 15 complete financial years from the end of the financial year in which the account was opened. The calculation is therefore based on financial years, not simply on the day you made the first deposit.
#1 Best Overall
For example, an account opened during financial year 2010–11 is counted from the end of that financial year. The relevant 15-year period is measured from that year-end under the scheme rules. Use the opening year recorded in your PPF passbook and ask the holding office to confirm the maturity date before filing the closure request.
Maturity does not automatically close the account
Reaching maturity does not force an immediate withdrawal. India Post’s CBS manual and the PPF scheme rules describe separate choices:
- Close the account and request payment of the maturity value.
- Keep the matured account without making further deposits; it continues under the applicable post-maturity rules.
- Apply for an extension, including an extension with deposits, where the scheme permits it.
The manual describes an application for an extension with deposits within one year of maturity. The scheme text also discusses further five-year blocks. Because extension elections have deadlines and affect future deposits and withdrawals, confirm the current rule and form at the office before choosing closure.

1. The current SB-7A form
Download or obtain the latest SB-7A maturity-closure form. It identifies the scheme as PPF, asks for the PPF account number and the post office, and contains both a depositor section and a payment/acquittance section. Do not rely on an old photocopy if the office has issued a revised form.
2. The PPF passbook
The SB-7A instructions require the account passbook to be submitted with the closure application. Take the original passbook to the office and keep a copy or clear scan for your records. If entries are incomplete or the passbook is damaged, ask the office whether it needs to update or replace it before accepting the closure request.

3. Proof of the destination bank account
For a bank-account credit, India Post says to attach either:
- a copy of the first page of the destination bank passbook, showing the account holder and account number; or
- a cancelled cheque for the destination account.
Use an account in the name permitted by the scheme and office records. Copy the account number, name, branch and other details exactly as they appear on the proof. A mismatch can lead to a query or rejection, so do not handwrite an account number from memory.

Official PPF rules state that, at payment, the depositor’s signature or thumb impression is made in the presence of an authorised officer who verifies identity. Carry the identification documents the holding post office asks for and be prepared to sign at the counter rather than signing every field in advance. If the account is operated through an authorised representative or involves a special circumstance, ask the office for its additional requirements before submission.
Step-by-step: request credit to your bank account
- Confirm the maturity status. Check the opening financial year in the passbook and verify that the 15 complete financial years have elapsed. If you might retain or extend the account, decide that before submitting a closure form.
- Get the current SB-7A form. Use the official India Post PDF or collect the form from the post office where the PPF account is held.
- Complete the account section. Enter the PPF account number, post office and depositor particulars exactly as recorded. Use legible writing and do not leave a field blank if the form or counter staff requires an entry.
- Select the bank-credit payment route. The form includes wording to the effect of “Please credit into my Savings Account No”. Enter the destination account details in the payment section. If the office asks for a particular Post Office Savings Bank account field or a bank-detail format, follow that version of the form.
- Attach account proof. Add the first-page passbook copy or cancelled cheque specified in India Post’s guidance. Make sure the copy is readable and belongs to the account whose number you entered.
- Submit the passbook and application together. Give the completed SB-7A, the PPF passbook, bank proof and any identity material to the office holding the account. Ask the receiving official to check that the payment option and account number are complete before you leave.
- Complete identity verification. Sign or provide a thumb impression in the authorised officer’s presence when instructed. The officer verifies the identity before payment is released.
- Review the payment order and acknowledgement. SB-7A contains office-use payment-order fields and an acquittance for the depositor. Read the acknowledgement, confirm the destination account details, and retain a stamped copy or receipt if the office provides one.
- Monitor the destination account. No official source cited here promises a universal processing time. Ask the holding office how it will notify you and when you should follow up if the credit is not visible.
Payment methods shown on the official material
The SB-7A form provides more than one way to receive the amount. The practical choice for this question is bank-account credit, but understanding the alternatives helps you complete the form correctly.
| Payment route | What the official material indicates | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Credit to a savings account | The form asks for the savings-account number; India Post’s guidance supports this route with a first-page passbook copy or cancelled cheque. | Account number, account-holder details and attached proof must match. |
| Account-payee or crossed cheque | The SB-7A payment section includes cheque payment, and the general savings rules describe payment by crossed cheque. | Confirm the payee name and how the cheque will be delivered or collected. |
| Cash where permitted | The form and general rules provide for cash only where the applicable limit and office rules allow it. | Ask the office about the limit and whether another payment route is required for a larger amount. |
India Post’s public guidance specifically explains the bank-credit route. If you choose a cheque or permitted cash instead, use the corresponding option on the form and follow the office’s instructions.

What happens after you submit the form
Office examination
The holding office checks the SB-7A entries, the passbook, the bank-account proof and identity. It may ask you to correct an incomplete field, provide a clearer copy or resolve a difference between the PPF record and the destination account.
Payment authorisation
The form includes an office-use payment order and a depositor acquittance. These sections document the amount authorised and your acknowledgement of receipt. Read them before signing; if the amount or payee details appear wrong, ask the official to correct the record before payment.
Credit timing
The official material cited for this procedure does not establish a single service-level timeline for every post office. Processing can depend on verification and the office holding the account. Do not rely on an internet promise such as “same day” or “three working days” unless your office gives you that commitment in writing.
Decide whether to close, retain or extend
Submitting SB-7A is a closure decision. If you need the funds now, closure and bank credit may be appropriate. If you do not need the money, compare that choice with the post-maturity options before signing.
| Choice | What the cited scheme material establishes | Questions to answer first |
|---|---|---|
| Close at maturity | The balance is paid using the selected bank, cheque or permitted cash route after the office verifies the claim. | Do you need the money now, and are all payment details correct? |
| Retain without new deposits | A matured account may be retained without further deposits and continues to earn interest at the applicable scheme rate. | Do you want continued account holding without making additional contributions? |
| Extend, including with deposits where allowed | The manual and scheme text describe extensions in further five-year blocks; an extension with deposits requires an application within the stated one-year window after maturity. | Will you make new deposits, and have you confirmed the current deadline and form? |
The material available here does not provide a current interest-rate comparison or personalised financial advice. Confirm the applicable rate, withdrawal conditions and extension paperwork from the current scheme rules before choosing to leave the money in PPF.

If the PPF account is held at a bank
The general PPF and savings rules support payment to a savings bank account, but the passbook-copy or cancelled-cheque checklist quoted above is India Post’s Post Office guidance. A bank-held PPF account can use a different closure form, document list, signature process or submission channel.
Contact the bank branch or its official service channel that holds the PPF account and ask:
- which maturity-closure form it currently accepts;
- whether the original PPF passbook is required;
- what proof of the destination account it wants;
- whether submission must be in person and where identity verification occurs; and
- how it records the payment instruction and acknowledges receipt.
Do not present the India Post checklist as a universal requirement for every bank. Use the bank’s own current form while applying the same core discipline: specify the destination account unambiguously, attach the requested proof and retain an acknowledgement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse maturity payment with NEFT or RTGS deposits
India Post’s SB Order No. 09/2023 discusses an NEFT/RTGS facility in the context of transactions involving savings schemes. That context does not turn a matured PPF withdrawal into a generic online transfer instruction. For maturity proceeds, the documented route is the closure application and payment option accepted by the office holding the account.

Conversely, an instruction for transferring money into a PPF account is not a substitute for SB-7A. If you are closing the account, identify the request as maturity closure and use the form’s payment section.

Troubleshooting common problems
The office says the account is not yet mature
Ask the official to show the opening financial year recorded in the account and how the 15 complete financial years are being counted. If your own calculation used the account-opening day rather than the end of its financial year, that may explain the difference. Do not submit a closure request until the office confirms eligibility.
The destination account number is wrong
Stop the submission before signing the acquittance or payment instruction. Replace the form and bank proof so the number, account-holder name and branch details agree. If you discover the error after submission, contact the holding office immediately and ask whether the payment order can still be corrected.
You have no cancelled cheque
India Post’s guidance allows a copy of the first page of the destination bank passbook as an alternative. Obtain a clear copy showing the required account particulars. Ask the counter staff whether any additional verification is needed for the particular account.

The passbook is missing
The SB-7A form says to submit the passbook. Report the loss to the holding office and ask for its procedure for a replacement passbook or alternative record before attempting closure. The office may need extra declarations or identity checks.
The bank account is jointly held or has a different name
Do not assume the payment will be accepted. Show the destination-account proof to the holding office and ask whether the account ownership and PPF records satisfy its rules. Correct any name mismatch through the prescribed process rather than altering the proof.
The office will not give a delivery date
There is no universal processing-time promise in the cited official sources. Keep the submission receipt, note the date and ask for a follow-up contact or reference number. Escalate through the post office’s published grievance route if the office cannot explain the status after a reasonable interval.
Use this submission checklist
- PPF account has completed 15 financial years under the scheme’s calculation.
- You have decided against retaining or extending the account, if those options matter to you.
- Current SB-7A maturity-closure form.
- Original PPF passbook.
- Destination bank passbook first-page copy or cancelled cheque, as India Post specifies for Post Office accounts.
- Destination account number and holder details copied exactly from the proof.
- Identification documents requested by the holding office.
- Unsigned fields reviewed with counter staff, with signatures or thumb impressions provided during authorised verification.
- Copy or scan of the submitted form and attachments.
- Receipt, stamped acknowledgement or other submission reference.
After the money is credited
Check the destination account statement against the payment acknowledgement. Keep the SB-7A copy, passbook evidence and credit entry together with your financial records. If the amount, account reference or payee name differs from the acknowledgement, contact the holding office promptly and quote the submission reference.
The essential sequence is simple: verify maturity, complete SB-7A, nominate the correct savings account, attach the required proof, submit the passbook for identity-checked closure, and retain evidence of the request. The decision to close should be made separately from the mechanics of receiving the money, because a matured PPF account can also be retained or extended under different rules.
