When your home equity line of credit (HELOC) changes servicers, the loan itself usually does not change—but the company, address, website, or bank instructions used to collect your payment can. The safest approach is to use the transfer notice to identify the old servicer’s last acceptance date, the new servicer’s first acceptance date, the correct payment destination, and the contact information for both companies. Then redirect automatic payments, allow delivery time, and confirm that the next payment appears in the new account.
Do not assume that the federal mortgage-servicing transfer rules you may have read about automatically apply to an open-end HELOC. Regulation X excludes open-end lines of credit (home equity plans) from its mortgage-loan definition for the servicing-transfer subpart. Your notice, HELOC agreement, and direct instructions from both servicers control the handoff unless another applicable law or contract provision says otherwise.

Start by identifying exactly what changed
A notice can refer to a loan sale, a servicing transfer, or both. These events matter differently for your next payment.
A servicing transfer changes the payment collector
A servicing transfer means a different company will collect payments, maintain the payment history, answer account questions, and generally administer the HELOC. The balance, interest-rate formula, credit limit, draw terms, and other loan provisions do not automatically change merely because servicing changes. Your immediate task is to send each payment to the company that is authorized to receive it on that date.

A loan sale can occur without a servicing change
The creditor or owner can sell the loan while the same servicer continues collecting payments. A sale notice is not, by itself, evidence that your payment address or online account has changed. Follow the payment instructions in the notice that specifically identifies a new servicer or a new payment destination. If the language is unclear, ask both companies whether the payment recipient actually changed and record the answer.
Use the transfer notice as your transition record
Read the entire notice before changing anything in your bank account. Save a paper copy and an electronic copy in a place you can retrieve after the old online account is closed. Make a short record of each item below:
- The effective date on which servicing moves to the new company.
- The last date the old servicer will accept payments, if stated.
- The first date the new servicer will accept payments.
- The new payment mailing address, lockbox, website, telephone payment number, or other approved destination.
- The account number or reference format the new servicer requires.
- The phone numbers, mailing addresses, and online-account instructions for both servicers.
- Instructions about a payment that is due during the transition.
- Any direction about insurance, escrow-like items, or recurring debits connected with the account.
For covered mortgage loans, transfer notices generally identify the effective date, both servicers’ contact information, and the dates when payment acceptance changes. Treat those as essential operational instructions for a HELOC as well, but verify them against the actual notice and your account agreement because the federal mortgage-servicing subpart does not automatically cover open-end HELOCs.
Confirm the dates and destination before sending money
Do not infer the correct recipient from the date printed on a check, an old statement, or a website search result. Confirm the handoff directly when any detail is missing or contradictory.
- Call the old servicer. Use a phone number from a prior statement or an account channel you already trust, not an unverified number in an unexpected message. Ask for the final date and time it will accept a payment, the address or electronic channel it wants, and what it does with a payment that arrives after the transfer.
- Call the new servicer. Ask when its payment system is active, what account number or reference must accompany a payment, and where a payment due during the transition should be sent. Ask whether a one-time payment can be made online or by phone before the first statement arrives.
- Resolve conflicts in writing. If the two companies give different dates or destinations, request written confirmation through a secure message, email address already listed on a statement, or letter. Keep the names of representatives, dates, and any confirmation numbers.
- Check the HELOC agreement. Look for the due date, grace period, payment-posting terms, accepted channels, and any requirement that a payment be received rather than merely mailed by a particular date. Those terms remain important during the transfer.
If you cannot obtain a clear answer and a payment is approaching, tell both servicers that a payment is due, ask which destination will credit it on time, and document the response. Do not split one payment between companies unless a servicer gives you explicit instructions; an unintended partial payment can create a separate posting problem.

Redirect every automatic payment
A recurring instruction aimed at the old servicer can continue running after the handoff. Update each payment mechanism separately; changing one does not necessarily change the others.
Bank or credit-union online bill pay
Sign in to the bank or credit union that sends the bill-pay check or electronic payment. Edit the payee name, mailing address, account number, and payment date using the new servicer’s instructions. If the bank treats the new payee as a new biller, delete or pause the old recurring instruction only after you have recorded its schedule and confirmed the replacement. A bill-pay payment scheduled for the old address may be delivered there even if the bank’s screen shows the new servicer’s name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAutomatic debit authorized with the old servicer
Some borrowers authorize the servicer to pull the amount from a bank account. Ask the old servicer how that authorization will end and ask the new servicer how to establish a replacement authorization. Do not assume that an authorization transfers automatically. Check the account for a final debit from the old company and make sure a new debit is not created in a way that duplicates it.
Payments scheduled inside the old servicer’s website
Download or print the pending-payment list and confirmations before the old online account becomes unavailable. Ask whether scheduled payments will be canceled, forwarded, or processed by the old company. Then enroll in the new site only after the new account is active and its payment instructions match the notice.
Choose a payment channel that is active and traceable
If you can choose among methods for the first payment, compare them on four practical points: whether the new servicer confirms the channel is active, how much delivery and processing time it needs, whether the payment is one-time or recurring, and what confirmation or transaction record you will receive.

| Payment method | Confirm before use | Timing issue | Record to retain |

| New servicer’s online payment portal | Account registration, accepted payment date, and any cutoff time | Allow for the portal’s stated processing period; do not wait until the due date if the portal is newly activated | Confirmation page, confirmation number, and bank debit record |

| Telephone payment | Correct phone number, accepted account, cutoff time, and any disclosed fee | Ask when the payment will be credited, not merely when the call is placed | Confirmation number and bank-account or card record |
| Exact lockbox address and required account information | Postal delivery and internal processing can take longer than the time remaining before the due date | Copy of the check, mailing proof, and eventual posting record |
The table is a planning aid, not a substitute for the HELOC’s payment terms. Use the channel the new servicer confirms and allow the amount of time it specifies.

Plan for a payment due during the handoff
The most difficult case is a due date that falls between the old servicer’s final acceptance date and the new servicer’s first acceptance date. Ask both companies where that payment should go and when it must arrive. If the old company says it will accept the payment through a stated date, send it there early enough to arrive under the HELOC’s terms. If the new company is already accepting payments, use its destination and include the required account reference.
When a notice gives separate “last accepted” and “first accepted” dates, follow those dates rather than assuming the effective date alone answers the question. If a payment is already scheduled, cancel or redirect it only after confirming which company should receive it. Retain proof of the original instruction, the change, and the final payment.
Do not deliberately delay a payment because you expect a transfer grace period. A federal 60-day misdirected-payment protection exists for certain covered mortgage loans, but you should not treat it as a guaranteed HELOC protection. Sending the payment to the confirmed destination on time is safer than relying on an exception that may not apply.
Verify that the first payment posted
After the new servicer has had the processing time it promised, sign in to the new account or review the next statement. Confirm all of the following:

- The payment date and amount are shown correctly.
- The payment reduced the amount due or principal according to the account’s normal posting rules.
- No late charge, returned-payment fee, or unexplained suspense balance appears.
- The next due date and minimum payment are what the HELOC agreement and recent activity indicate.
- Your recurring payment instruction, if any, is active only once and is aimed at the new servicer.
Keep the transfer notice, both servicers’ instructions, bank or bill-pay confirmations, cleared-check images, telephone confirmation numbers, and screenshots of the posted transaction. A payment record is most useful when it shows the date, amount, destination, and account reference together.
What to do if the notice is missing or contradictory
No notice arrived
Contact the company currently named on your latest statement and ask whether servicing has changed, when the change takes effect, and how the new company can be verified. Contact the alleged new servicer separately using information from a document or account channel you already trust. Until the recipient is confirmed, do not send money to an unfamiliar address supplied only in an unsolicited message.
The dates do not match
Ask each servicer to identify the date it uses for payment acceptance and the destination for a payment due during the overlap. Request a corrected notice or written clarification. If a due date is close, explain that fact and ask for instructions that state where the payment will be credited.
The payment address changed but the account number did not
Use the new address and the exact account-reference format in the notice. A familiar account number does not make an old lockbox safe to use. If your bank’s bill-pay system cannot update the address in time, ask the new servicer for an approved electronic or telephone alternative and document the answer.
Understand the federal mortgage-servicing rules—and their HELOC limit
For a mortgage loan covered by Regulation X, 12 CFR § 1024.33 generally requires the transferor servicer to send a transfer notice at least 15 days before the effective transfer and the transferee servicer to send notice no more than 15 days after it. A combined notice generally is sent at least 15 days before the effective date. The notice identifies the effective date, both servicers’ contact information, and when the old and new companies will accept payments.

For those covered mortgage loans, during the 60 days beginning on the effective transfer date, a payment received by the old servicer on or before the due date, including an applicable grace period, generally may not be treated as late. The old servicer must promptly forward a misdirected payment to the new servicer or return it and notify the payer of the proper recipient.
Those provisions are useful for understanding why transfer notices specify dates and destinations, but the definition in 12 CFR § 1024.31 expressly says:
“Mortgage loan means any federally related mortgage loan, as that term is defined in § 1024.2 subject to the exemptions in § 1024.5(b), but does not include open-end lines of credit (home equity plans).”

Because a typical HELOC is an open-end home equity plan, do not promise that the 15-day notice timing or 60-day misdirected-payment safe harbor protects your account. The sources of a different protection could be your HELOC contract, another applicable law, or state requirements, but there is no single alternative federal deadline or payment safe harbor established for every HELOC. Ask both servicers which procedures apply to your account.
Troubleshoot a payment problem immediately
The old servicer received a payment after the transfer
Contact the old servicer and the new servicer the same day. Provide the payment date, amount, delivery method, account number, and proof of delivery or clearance. Ask whether the old company will forward the payment, return it, or apply it under a specific procedure. Ask the new company how it will credit the amount once received. Do not send a duplicate payment until you understand whether the first payment is being transferred or returned; if the due date is imminent, ask both companies how to avoid a late posting while preserving the original payment record.
The new account does not show the payment
First check the processing period stated by the servicer. Then contact its payment department with your confirmation number or cleared-check image. Ask whether the payment is in a suspense or unapplied status, whether the account reference was sufficient, and whether a correction is needed. Save the response and request written confirmation of the posting date.
A late fee or delinquency appears
Notify the servicer promptly that the account was in a servicing transition. Send copies of the notice, payment proof, and any written directions. Ask what error-resolution or complaint process applies to this HELOC; do not assume the procedures for a closed-end mortgage automatically apply. If the servicer will not correct an apparent error, request its formal complaint instructions and consider obtaining advice about applicable state or federal remedies.

Find out whether it was returned because the old lockbox closed, the new account was not yet active, the account reference was wrong, or the bank rejected the transaction. Ask the servicer for the correct replacement method and the date it will credit the replacement. Keep the returned-payment notice and bank records, and verify that any fee is addressed under the account terms.
Quick Recap
A practical transfer timeline
As soon as you receive the notice
- Save the notice and write down the effective, final-acceptance, and first-acceptance dates.
- Mark the next HELOC due date and any grace-period date from the account terms.
- Verify the old and new servicer contact details through trusted account records.
- List every automatic payment method connected to the HELOC.
Before the old servicer stops accepting payments
- Ask both servicers where a payment due during the transition should go.
- Update bank bill pay, recurring debits, and any scheduled payment inside the old portal.
- Allow enough time for a mailed or bank-originated payment to arrive and be processed.
- Download pending-payment details and recent statements.
After the first payment should have posted
- Review the new account’s transaction history or statement.
- Match the posted amount and date to your payment confirmation.
- Check for duplicate debits, a returned payment, a late fee, or an unapplied balance.
- Keep all records until the transfer and the next billing cycle are fully reconciled.
Key points to remember
- The transfer notice and the HELOC’s own payment terms establish the practical dates and destination; confirm any ambiguity with both servicers.
- A loan can be sold without changing the servicer, so identify whether the payment recipient actually changed.
- Update bank bill pay and automatic debits separately, and allow delivery time for mailed payments.
- Check the new account after processing and retain proof that the payment posted.
- Regulation X’s mortgage-servicing subpart excludes open-end HELOCs, so its ordinary notice timing and 60-day payment safe harbor should not be presented as automatic HELOC protections.
