1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe reliable way to track India’s private capex is to combine three views: MoSPI’s national-accounts measure of private-sector gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), MoSPI’s large-enterprise CAPEX survey, and a consistent panel of company annual reports and MCA filings. None is a complete substitute for the others. National accounts provide the economy-wide benchmark, the survey supplies a structured but large-enterprise-heavy estimate, and filings let you test what named companies actually spent.
Keep actual spending separate from management intentions, gross additions separate from net assets, and current-price values separate from constant-price values. Those distinctions prevent the most common errors when comparing corporate investment with India’s GDP data.

What private capex measures—and why the definition matters
Capital expenditure is spending that creates, enlarges or materially improves assets used for production. In company accounts, that usually means property, plant and equipment (PPE), capital work in progress (CWIP), qualifying intangible assets and, after the relevant accounting changes, right-of-use assets from leases. Acquisitions of businesses can also transfer productive assets without appearing as a simple “purchase of PPE” line.
India’s national accounts use gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), a macroeconomic concept rather than a direct sum of one company’s “capex” line. GFCF includes fixed assets created for production across institutional sectors and is reported at current and constant prices. A company panel may omit smaller firms, include leased assets differently, or capture foreign subsidiaries and acquisitions in ways that do not map one-for-one to domestic GFCF.

For a useful tracker, define the observation before collecting it. Record whether a figure is an actual outlay, a provisional estimate or an intention; whether it is gross additions or net of depreciation and impairment; the fiscal period and year-end; the price basis; and the companies included.
Start with the national benchmark: MoSPI GFCF
Download the latest MoSPI national-accounts tables that show GFCF by institutional sector. Preserve the table’s current-price and constant-price series as separate columns and record the base year attached to every constant-price series. Do not use a current-price increase as evidence that the physical volume of investment grew by the same percentage.
An 11 August 2025 Lok Sabha answer reported that GFCF of private non-financial corporations at current prices increased from ₹19.01 lakh crore in 2018–19 to ₹29.68 lakh crore in 2023–24—about 56%. The measure covers the institutional sector, not only listed companies and not only the large enterprises in MoSPI’s CAPEX survey.
Use the national series as the denominator for context, not as a “market capex” total. Its institutional boundaries, valuation rules and revision history follow national-accounts practice. Save the publication date and revision status whenever you download a table, because later estimates can replace earlier years.
Use MoSPI’s corporate CAPEX survey as a second lens
MoSPI’s first corporate CAPEX survey covered actual CAPEX in 2021–22, 2022–23 and 2023–24, and intentions for 2024–25 and 2025–26. It used an MCA-based frame of large enterprises and collected information by asset, industry, objective and financing source.

| MoSPI survey measure | 2021–22 | 2022–23 | 2023–24 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average gross fixed assets per private-corporate enterprise | ₹3,151.9 crore | ₹3,279.4 crore | ₹4,183.3 crore |
| Estimated CAPEX per enterprise | ₹109.2 crore | ₹148.8 crore | ₹107.6 crore |
The survey also estimated provisional 2024–25 CAPEX of ₹172.2 crore per enterprise for acquiring new assets. That is a provisional, survey-based estimate and should not be added to realized spending for 2023–24 or treated as an audited result.
The inaugural survey had a 58.3% response rate and noted that respondents were cautious. Some infrastructure special-purpose vehicles were outside its frame. The 2026 survey continues to target selected large MCA-registered enterprises meeting turnover criteria and asks about past, current and future CAPEX. Treat survey totals as an important indicator of large-enterprise activity, not a census of every private business.

Build a filing panel that stays comparable
Choose companies consistently by principal activity and size. A panel can be listed companies, large unlisted companies with accessible filings, or both, but the inclusion rule must remain fixed when you calculate growth rates. Preserve each company’s legal identifier, principal activity or NIC classification, fiscal year-end and ownership or institutional-sector treatment.
Download audited annual reports and MCA/Registrar of Companies filings. RBI states that its company-finance studies use audited annual accounts as the data source, supplemented by directors’ reports, notes to accounts and statutory disclosures. Those documents are the primary evidence for a named company’s realized investment.
Extract these fields from every annual report
- Gross PPE additions: additions before depreciation, impairment and disposals, by major asset class where disclosed.
- Capital work in progress: opening balance, additions, transfers to PPE, cancellations and closing balance.
- Intangible-asset additions: software, development costs and other capitalized intangibles when separately reported.
- Right-of-use or lease additions: identify whether the accounting policy records new leases as assets.
- Acquisitions: asset purchases and business combinations, with the accounting treatment and acquisition date.
- Disposals: gross cost removed, accumulated depreciation removed and any gain or loss.
- Depreciation and impairment: needed to explain the difference between gross additions and the closing net asset balance.
- Cash-flow purchases: purchases of property, plant and equipment and other fixed assets in the investing cash-flow section.
- Status and provenance: actual, provisional or intended; source document, page or note, publication date, unit and extraction comments.
Do not assume that the balance-sheet movement in PPE equals cash paid. A reconciliation can include non-cash additions, capitalized borrowing costs, foreign-exchange movements, lease recognition, assets acquired through a business combination and transfers from CWIP.

Reconcile the balance sheet to cash flow
For each company, construct a bridge rather than copying one headline number:
- Start with opening gross PPE and opening accumulated depreciation.
- Add disclosed gross additions and transfers from CWIP.
- Separate lease or right-of-use additions, acquisitions and other non-cash additions.
- Subtract disposals and derecognition.
- Reconcile to closing gross PPE, then separately account for depreciation and impairment to reach net PPE.
- Compare the resulting investment measure with cash-flow purchases of PPE and other fixed assets.
- Document every unreconciled difference and retain the note reference.
For a cash-investment series, use the cash-flow figure only when its scope is clear. For an asset-creation series, use gross additions but label non-cash items. If you publish both, never call them the same measure.
Compare the concepts that are most often confused
| Comparison | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Actual versus intended CAPEX | Whether announced plans have become recorded investment | Keep intentions in a forward-looking column and exclude them from realized totals until reported as actual. |
| Gross additions versus net fixed assets | New investment versus the asset base after depreciation, impairment and disposals | Use gross additions for spending momentum; use net assets to assess the stock of productive capacity. |
| Fixed-panel growth versus changing-universe totals | Underlying growth of the same companies versus the effect of entrants and exits | Use a common-company panel for growth rates; label changing-universe aggregates as coverage totals. |
| Current-price versus constant-price GFCF | Rupee value at prevailing prices versus volume growth at the stated base year | Use current prices for nominal financing and scale; use constant prices for real investment comparisons. |
| Large-enterprise survey versus full private economy | Investment behavior of selected large MCA-registered enterprises versus the wider institutional sector | Use the survey to study composition and intentions, not to represent every private firm. |
Aggregate the panel without losing the accounting trail
Store one row per company and fiscal year, then calculate totals from the same fields and scope each year. Keep separate aggregates for gross PPE additions, cash purchases, CWIP additions, lease additions and acquisitions. A single “capex” total hides economically different transactions.
RBI cautions that absolute totals from company-finance studies are not strictly comparable when the selected-company sample changes. A fixed panel of companies present in every year restores comparability for growth rates, while a broader annual universe can show coverage but not a clean like-for-like trend.
Preserve fiscal-year ends. A March year-end and a December year-end cover different economic periods, even if both are labeled “2023–24” in a spreadsheet. Do not silently align them to the calendar year.

Explain why company totals will not equal MoSPI GFCF
A gap is expected and should be explained, not forced away. The main causes are:
- Coverage: the company panel may contain listed or large firms, while national GFCF covers the private non-financial-corporation sector more broadly.
- Institutional boundaries: national accounts classify sectors and transactions differently from consolidated company accounts.
- Leases: right-of-use recognition can create an asset without a matching cash purchase in the company’s investing cash flow.
- Acquisitions and disposals: buying an existing business or asset changes corporate assets but is not equivalent to constructing new domestic fixed capital.
- Foreign subsidiaries: consolidated accounts can include investment outside India, whereas domestic GFCF is geographically bounded.
- Inflation and valuation: current-price company figures cannot be compared directly with constant-price GFCF.
- Timing: different fiscal year-ends and survey reference periods can shift the same project between years.
- Revisions: national-accounts estimates and company filings can be restated after the first publication.
Report the reconciliation as a diagnostic table or narrative bridge. Do not scale a sample total up to the economy without a documented coverage method.

The 2025 parliamentary answer also cited RBI data showing net fixed-asset growth of private limited companies of 7.6% in 2021–22, 10.3% in 2022–23 and 10.2% in 2023–24. These are growth rates in net fixed assets, not gross cash CAPEX. Depreciation, impairment, disposals and accounting reclassifications affect the result, so the figures should not be substituted for an additions series.
Read those rates alongside the MoSPI survey’s per-enterprise CAPEX estimates and the national GFCF series. Divergence can be informative: rising net assets with modest gross additions may reflect low depreciation or acquisitions, while high announced intentions without rising additions may indicate delayed projects.
Label intentions and project announcements correctly
Management guidance, board approvals, memoranda and survey intentions are commitments or plans, not realized investment. Create distinct fields for announced amount, expected start, expected completion, financing status, actual additions and actual cash paid. Mark a project as realized only when the company’s accounts support the expenditure.

Never add the MoSPI provisional 2024–25 estimate or a company’s announced multi-year plan to historical CAPEX. You can present it as a pipeline indicator, with its reference year and provisional status attached.
Maintain a refreshable data workflow
- Set the benchmark: download the newest MoSPI GFCF tables and save current-price, constant-price, base-year, publication-date and revision fields.
- Update the survey layer: capture MoSPI’s actual and intended CAPEX tables, response information, enterprise coverage and provisional labels.
- Refresh filings: collect audited annual reports and MCA/RoC filings for every panel company.
- Extract and reconcile: populate the asset, cash-flow and status fields, then investigate differences between the balance-sheet bridge and cash payments.
- Run comparability checks: verify panel membership, NIC classification, fiscal-year ends, units, currency, consolidation scope and duplicate entities.
- Publish with provenance: retain the exact source name, publication date, fiscal period, price basis, unit, company identifier and extraction note for every observation.
- Re-run on revisions: repeat the process when MoSPI, RBI or MCA releases a new year, revised estimate or restated filing.
A practical dashboard layout
A useful tracker has four linked views:
- Macro view: private non-financial-corporation GFCF at current and constant prices, with the stated base year.
- Survey view: MoSPI’s per-enterprise assets and CAPEX, split into actual and intended periods.
- Company view: fixed-panel gross additions, cash purchases, CWIP, leases, acquisitions, disposals and net fixed assets.
- Reconciliation view: coverage, institutional, valuation, timing and consolidation explanations for differences.
Each chart or table should display the reference period and status. A reader should be able to tell immediately whether a number is a rupee amount, a real-volume index, a growth rate, a survey estimate or a company-reported cash flow.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Using only press releases: replace announcements with audited notes and cash-flow statements.
- Mixing nominal and real series: keep current-price and constant-price GFCF in separate measures and show the base year.
- Calling net-asset growth “capex”: report gross additions or cash purchases, then show net assets separately.
- Changing the sample each year: maintain a common-company panel for growth comparisons.
- Ignoring leases and acquisitions: classify non-cash and acquired assets explicitly.
- Forcing a company total to match national GFCF: explain coverage and accounting boundaries instead of inventing an adjustment.
- Dropping provenance: retain source, date, unit, period, identifier and extraction notes so every value can be audited.
What the combined evidence can tell you
Used together, the three layers answer different questions. MoSPI GFCF indicates whether private fixed investment is expanding across the institutional sector. The survey shows how selected large enterprises describe asset type, purpose, financing and future plans. Filings reveal which companies actually added assets, paid cash, accumulated CWIP or reduced investment through disposals.
The strongest conclusion comes when all three move in the same direction and the coverage and price bases are aligned. When they diverge, treat that divergence as a measurement question: check sample composition, leases, acquisitions, foreign operations, fiscal timing and revisions before drawing an economic conclusion.
