How to Track an IRS Refund Without Falling for Refund-Status Scams

By TheFinanceBase Team 14 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check a federal income-tax refund only through a channel you open yourself: the IRS Where’s My Refund? service on IRS.gov, IRS Online Account, the official IRS mobile app, or the automated line at 800-829-1954. Do not click an unexpected text or email link that claims your refund is ready. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies those messages as phishing when they request your Social Security number, bank details, or a payment to release a refund.

For the fastest web lookup, use Where’s My Refund? and enter the information from your filed return. If a message prompted you to check, close it and navigate to IRS.gov manually instead. Refund tracking is free; you do not need a paid app, identity-protection subscription, or other product to obtain a legitimate status.

Choose an IRS channel you initiate

Use the option that fits how much information you need. Never select a channel from a link in an unsolicited message or from an advertisement that imitates the IRS.

Official option What you need Best use
Where’s My Refund? Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount shown on the return A direct status lookup without signing in
IRS Online Account An IRS account sign-in Refund status plus other tax records; the IRS says you can enable refund-status email notifications in Individual Online Account
IRS mobile app The official app obtained through your device’s normal app store Checking status from a phone without following a message link
Automated refund hotline: 800-829-1954 Your return information and telephone access A phone-based status check

Where’s My Refund? is usually the simplest choice when you want one lookup and do not want to create or access an account. Online Account is more useful if you also need tax records or want to turn on status-change email notifications. The app provides a mobile interface, while the automated line is an alternative when you cannot use the website. All four are official routes; none requires a payment.

For a state-tax refund, use the state tax agency’s official website or phone number. The procedures and contact rules below concern federal individual income-tax refunds handled by the IRS.

When your refund becomes trackable

The IRS gives different waiting periods depending on how and when you filed. These are availability estimates, not guarantees that the IRS has accepted the return or that payment will arrive on a particular date.

Return When status is generally available Typical receipt estimate stated by the IRS
Current-year return filed electronically About 24 hours after e-filing About 3 weeks for an e-filed return
Prior-year return filed electronically About 3 days after e-filing About 3 weeks for an e-filed return
Paper return mailed to the IRS About 4 weeks after mailing Six weeks or more

If you check before the applicable interval, the system may not have a record yet. Wait until the estimate has passed, then verify that the identifying information you enter exactly matches the filed return. The IRS’s current refund guidance lists the 24-hour, three-day, and four-week thresholds; its typical receipt estimates are about three weeks for e-filed returns and six weeks or more for mailed returns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those time frames measure when a record may appear, not when money must be deposited. An IRS Tax Tip published April 21, 2026, says most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, but individual returns can take longer. A status that remains unchanged for a while is not, by itself, evidence of a scam or an error.

How to use Where’s My Refund?

  1. Open a fresh browser window. Type IRS.gov yourself rather than using a link in a text, email, social-media message, search advertisement, or pop-up.
  2. Open the IRS refund-status service. Select Where’s My Refund? from the IRS refund information pages.
  3. Enter the requested details. Provide your SSN or ITIN, filing status, and the exact refund amount in whole dollars. Do not round, add commas, or substitute the amount you hoped to receive.
  4. Review the displayed stage. The tracker reports one of three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, or Refund Sent.
  5. Record any personalized date. After the IRS processes and approves the return, the service can show a personalized refund date. That date is tied to the IRS’s processing information, not to a promise made by a text sender.

Use the amount printed on the filed return, not a later estimate from tax software or a message. Filing status must also be the status used on that return. A mismatch can prevent the tracker from finding the record even when the return was submitted correctly. Keep the return nearby while checking so you do not have to copy sensitive details from an unverified source.

The service is designed for individual federal returns. If your filing situation involves an amended return, a different taxpayer type, or a state refund, follow the separate instructions for that matter rather than assuming the federal tracker covers it.

What each refund status means

Return Received

The IRS has received the return into its processing system. Receipt is not the same as approval: the agency may still verify figures, credits, identity, or other information before authorizing a payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refund Approved

The IRS has completed the processing needed to approve the refund shown in the tracker. At this stage, the service may provide a personalized date for the payment. Approval means the IRS has authorized the refund shown; it does not make an unrelated text, caller, or website legitimate.

Refund Sent

The IRS has sent the refund. Use the payment details associated with your return and your financial institution’s posting timetable to determine when funds appear. A message claiming that a refund was sent is not evidence; the status shown after you sign in or enter your return details is the authoritative check.

If a date appears, save or print the status for your records, but do not post it publicly. Your status, refund amount, SSN or ITIN, and filing status are useful together to an identity thief.

Why a refund can take longer than expected

The IRS says most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, but that is a general processing figure rather than a guarantee. A return can take longer when the IRS must correct information, conduct additional review, or resolve another issue. A delay by itself does not prove that your return is wrong or that a message about it is fraudulent.

Electronic filing does not guarantee an immediate approval. The 24-hour or three-day figures describe when the status may become available, while the three-week and six-week estimates describe typical receipt timing. These are separate milestones. Checking repeatedly will not accelerate processing, and paying someone to “release” the refund cannot accelerate it.

If the IRS needs more information, its guidance says it will contact you by mail. Do not treat an urgent text, email, or call demanding immediate action as a substitute for that notice. Check your status through an official channel and wait for written instructions before sending documents or changing payment details.

How refund-status phishing works

The FTC’s January 2026 consumer alert describes a common pattern. A text or email appears to come from the IRS or a state tax office, says a refund has been processed or approved, and directs you to a link to “verify” your identity or receive money. The page asks for an SSN, bank-account information, or other financial details. That is phishing: the message is designed to steal information, not to deliver a refund.

The FTC’s direct instruction is: “To check the status of a pending tax refund, never use the link from the message.” An unexpected refund message is especially suspicious when it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • creates urgency, such as a short deadline or a threat that the refund will be cancelled;
  • asks you to reply with an SSN, ITIN, bank number, debit-card number, password, or security code;
  • requires a fee, gift card, cryptocurrency, or other payment to release a refund;
  • uses a web address, logo, or caller identification that you cannot independently verify; or
  • includes an attachment or directs you to install an app.

A convincing logo, familiar name, or caller ID is not authentication. Criminals can copy branding and manipulate displayed numbers. A message can also contain a real name or an accurate partial address obtained elsewhere. The deciding test is whether you initiated the contact through an IRS channel, not how professional the message looks.

The IRS says it does not initiate email or text contact to request personal or financial information, does not send social-media direct messages, and does not call to inform a taxpayer of a refund. The agency’s general scam guidance also warns about unexpected refund or credit offers, pressure to provide information, and demands to pay immediately. The IRS does not accept gift cards as tax payment.

What to do when a suspicious message arrives

If you have not clicked

  1. Do not reply, click, open an attachment, or call a number supplied in the message.
  2. Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) so your mobile carrier can review it.
  3. Report the message using the IRS phishing instructions. For a suspicious IRS text, the IRS asks you to email [email protected] with the subject line “Text” and include the sender’s number, the message content, your recipient number, and the date, time, and time zone.
  4. Delete the message after reporting it.
  5. If you still need your refund status, open IRS.gov yourself and use one of the official channels.

Do not forward the message to friends or family as a warning if doing so exposes their numbers or a malicious link. A screenshot can be useful for your report, but do not tap links while collecting it.

If you clicked but entered nothing

Close the page immediately and do not download software or continue a conversation with the sender. Report the message and delete it. Then perform your own status check from IRS.gov. A click alone does not tell you whether information was captured, so monitor for unusual account activity and treat any follow-up contact as untrusted unless you independently verify it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a file downloaded, do not open it. Use your device’s normal security process to remove it and install security updates from the device manufacturer or app store, not from a link in the message. The key tax steps remain reporting the message and checking the refund independently.

If you supplied an SSN, bank details, or money

  1. Stop communicating with the sender and do not send additional information.
  2. Use the identity-theft response steps at IdentityTheft.gov/steps and report the incident to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  3. Contact the bank or card issuer involved using the number on an official statement or the back of your card. Ask what account-protection, transaction-reversal, or replacement steps apply.
  4. Follow the IRS reporting instructions, including the phishing report details for a suspicious text. If the incident involved a scam call, record the caller’s number, hang up, and report the call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) as directed by the IRS.
  5. Continue checking your federal refund only through IRS.gov, IRS Online Account, the official mobile app, or 800-829-1954.

Act promptly even if the message claimed that only a “verification” was needed. An SSN, ITIN, bank account number, card number, or security code can be reused in later fraud attempts. Tell your financial institution exactly what was disclosed and follow its instructions rather than relying on a number in the suspicious message.

How to handle a call or letter that claims to be from the IRS

Do not assume that every call or letter is fraudulent. The safer test is whether you can verify the matter by initiating contact through an official IRS channel. For a call, do not provide information or payment during the conversation; write down the number and the caller’s claims, end the call, and use IRS.gov to find the appropriate contact route. For a letter, compare the notice details with your IRS records and use contact information that you obtain independently, not a number supplied by an unsolicited message.

IRS guidance describes a mail-first approach for many matters, while also recognizing exceptions. That is why the practical rule is verification, not a blanket assumption that every phone call or letter is fake. A legitimate notice will not turn the safe process upside down by requiring gift cards, cryptocurrency, or an immediate payment to obtain a refund.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the details needed for a legitimate status check

The official tracker requires an SSN or ITIN, filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount. Keep those details out of texts, email replies, social-media chats, and unfamiliar web forms. If you use a shared device, sign out of IRS Online Account and avoid saving the refund amount or tax documents in a public browser.

Use a unique password for your IRS account and complete any security steps offered during sign-in. Do not give an account password or one-time security code to a caller who says it is needed to “confirm” a refund. The IRS channel will ask for information within its own secure process; an unexpected contact asking you to repeat it is not that process.

Enable refund-status email notifications in Individual Online Account if that feature is available to you. A notification can tell you that the status changed, but it does not replace logging in through IRS.gov; never use a notification’s link unless you independently open the IRS site and confirm the change there. Treat an email notification as an alert, not as proof that a payment is waiting.

A quick, safe decision checklist

  • Need status now? Open IRS.gov yourself and use Where’s My Refund?, Online Account, the official mobile app, or 800-829-1954.
  • Filed electronically? Wait about 24 hours for a current-year return or about three days for a prior-year return before expecting a status record.
  • Mailed a paper return? Allow about four weeks before checking for a record.
  • Have the return ready? You will need your SSN or ITIN, filing status, and exact whole-dollar refund amount.
  • Got an unexpected message? Do not reply or click; forward a text to 7726, report it through IRS instructions, and delete it.
  • Shared information? Use IdentityTheft.gov/steps, report to ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and contact the affected bank or card issuer.
  • Waiting longer than expected? Check the official tracker and watch for an IRS letter. A delay alone is not proof of an error or scam.

Federal refunds versus state refunds

This guidance covers refunds from federal individual income-tax returns processed by the IRS. The FTC’s warning also mentions messages impersonating state tax offices, but each state sets its own refund tracker and contact practices. For a state refund, start at the state tax agency’s official website, typed into your browser independently, rather than following a message link.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check an IRS refund from a text message?

You can use a phone, but not the link or phone number supplied in an unexpected message. Open IRS.gov yourself, use the official IRS app, sign in to Online Account, or call 800-829-1954. The FTC specifically says never to use a message link to check a pending refund.

What information does the tracker request?

Have your SSN or ITIN, filing status, and the exact refund amount in whole dollars from the filed return. Enter the amount exactly; a rounded figure, commas, or an estimate can cause a mismatch.

Why does my e-filed return show no status yet?

Current-year e-filed returns generally become checkable after about 24 hours, and prior-year e-filed returns after about three days. Checking earlier may find no record. After those intervals, recheck the filing details and use an official channel.

Does “Refund Approved” mean the money is already in my bank?

No. It means the IRS has approved the refund and may show a personalized date. “Refund Sent” means the IRS has sent it; your bank or other financial institution may post the funds later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a refund delay proof that I was scammed?

No. The IRS says most refunds are issued in less than 21 days, but corrections, additional review, or other issues can extend processing. A delay alone does not establish fraud. Check the status directly and watch for an IRS letter if more information is needed.

Will the IRS email or text me for my SSN or bank information?

The IRS says it does not initiate email or text contact to request personal or financial information and does not send social-media direct messages. Do not reply. Report a suspicious text as directed by the IRS and forward it to 7726.

What if I clicked a refund link but did not submit anything?

Close the page, do not download or install anything, report and delete the message, and check the refund by navigating to IRS.gov yourself. Monitor for unusual activity because a click does not establish what the page may have captured.

What if I gave the sender my SSN or bank information?

Stop communicating, follow the steps at IdentityTheft.gov/steps, report the incident at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and contact the affected bank or card issuer through an official number. Also follow the IRS phishing-report instructions and continue refund checks only through official IRS channels.

Do I need to buy a service to track my refund?

No. The IRS provides the web tracker, Online Account, official mobile app, and automated hotline. Paid products are not required for status information, and a demand for a fee, gift card, or cryptocurrency to release a refund is a scam warning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the safest way to check an IRS refund?

Navigate directly to IRS.gov and use Where’s My Refund?, IRS Online Account, the official IRS mobile app, or 800-829-1954. Do not use links or numbers in unexpected messages.

When can I first check my refund?

Generally after 24 hours for a current-year e-filed return, three days for a prior-year e-filed return, or four weeks after mailing a paper return.

What should I do with a suspicious refund text?

Do not reply or click. Forward it to 7726 (SPAM), report it through the IRS phishing instructions, include the requested sender and timing details, and delete it.

What if I shared personal or financial information?

Use IdentityTheft.gov/steps, report to ReportFraud.ftc.gov, contact the affected bank or card issuer, and follow the IRS reporting instructions promptly.

The Bottom Line

Start every refund check yourself at IRS.gov, in IRS Online Account, in the official IRS app, or at 800-829-1954. Allow the IRS’s stated waiting periods, keep your SSN or ITIN and refund amount private, and treat an unexpected request for information, payment, or urgent action as phishing. Report suspicious texts to 7726 and the IRS; if you disclosed information, use IdentityTheft.gov/steps and contact your bank immediately.
