How to Track Affiliate Links: 4 Methods That Separate Clicks From Commissions

Affiliate-link tracking has four separate jobs: measuring outbound clicks, identifying placements, attributing sales, and reconciling approved commissions. Here is how to combine network reporting, sub-IDs, GA4, GTM, and compliant link management.

The most reliable way to track affiliate links is to use two layers: the affiliate network’s dashboard and tracking IDs or sub-IDs to measure credited sales and commissions, plus GA4 or Google Tag Manager to measure what visitors clicked on your site. A link manager or redirect layer can help maintain links, but it is optional and may be restricted by the affiliate program.

There is no universal tool that proves the entire journey from impression to click to approved commission. A click is not a conversion, a GA4 event is not a commission, and a commission shown as pending may later be reversed. The method you choose should match the result you need to measure.

The four ways to track affiliate links

Method Best for What it can prove Main limitation
Affiliate-network dashboard and tracking IDs Sales, leads, commissions, and payout reconciliation What the network or merchant credited, including clicks, actions, pending commissions, approved commissions, and reversals Attribution rules, reporting delays, and available dimensions vary by program
GA4 Enhanced Measurement Simple outbound-click tracking That a visitor clicked from your site to an external destination It does not prove that the merchant recorded the click or paid a commission
Google Tag Manager or custom events Placement-level analysis Which button, article, table, CTA, template, or link was clicked Requires configuration, testing, consent handling, and duplicate-event prevention
Link management or redirects Centralized link maintenance and link-level logs Which managed URL received requests and whether destinations remain editable May violate program rules and usually cannot see the merchant’s final conversion result

For most affiliate bloggers, creators, newsletter operators, and small publishers, the practical stack is:

  1. Network reporting for credited sales and commissions.
  2. Network tracking IDs, sub-IDs, or click references for identifying the article, platform, or placement that generated the result.
  3. GA4 or GTM for on-site click behavior and optimization.
  4. A compliant link manager only when centralized maintenance or link-level logging solves a real problem.

First, decide what you mean by tracking

An affiliate link contains an identifier that lets a merchant or affiliate network associate traffic or a later action with you as the publisher. But several different measurements are commonly called affiliate-link tracking:

  • Click tracking: Measures that someone clicked a link.
  • Outbound analytics: Measures a visitor’s behavior as they leave your website for another domain.
  • Affiliate attribution: Determines whether the network or merchant associates a later sale, lead, app install, or subscription with your referral.
  • Commission reporting: Shows whether the attributed action is pending, approved, reversed, or payable.

These measurements will not necessarily match. GA4 can record an outbound click even when no one buys. An affiliate network can report a commission for a purchase made later or after a click that occurred somewhere other than your website. A redirect tool can record a request from a bot or email-security scanner that never becomes a valid affiliate click.

Method 1: Use the affiliate network’s dashboard, tracking IDs, and sub-IDs

This is the essential method when your question is, Which clicks produced commissions? The affiliate network or merchant platform applies the program’s attribution window, cookie or click rules, conversion validation, refund policy, and reversal process. It is normally the only method among these four that can tell you what the program actually credited.

Think of the network dashboard as the commission-reporting layer—not as an infallible record of every purchase your content influenced. Cross-device journeys, deleted cookies, consent restrictions, competing affiliates, delayed validation, refunds, and program-specific rules can all affect the result.

How to set it up

  1. Log in to the affiliate network or merchant program.
  2. Generate the affiliate URL with the network’s own link generator. Avoid manually reconstructing or editing a tracking URL unless the network specifically documents how to do so.
  3. Create a distinct tracking ID, sub-ID, or click reference for each reporting unit that matters.
  4. Record the identifier, destination URL, placement, date created, and program in a link inventory or spreadsheet.
  5. Test the link in a clean browser session. Confirm that it reaches the intended merchant page and that required tracking information has not been removed.
  6. Wait for the network’s normal reporting delay, then compare clicks, actions, pending commissions, approved commissions, and reversals.

Tracking IDs, sub-IDs, and click references

A tracking ID is generally a network-provided identifier used to separate sites, campaigns, or groups of links. A sub-ID is a custom value appended to a tracking link to identify a placement, article, creative, audience, or other non-personal dimension. A click reference is a network-specific equivalent; Awin, for example, calls this field a ClickRef.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use identifiers that answer a business question rather than creating a different value for every insignificant variation. Useful examples include:

review_top_cta_blog
review_comparison_table_blog
youtube_description
pinned_comment_youtube
newsletter_march_2026

A consistent naming format such as [content]_[placement]_[platform] makes reports easier to read. Do not put names, email addresses, phone numbers, or other personally identifying information into these fields. Use an opaque internal ID if you need to connect a report to a customer or campaign record.

Network-specific examples

Amazon Associates: Amazon allows Associates to create multiple tracking IDs to analyze different websites or merchandising strategies, with the results available in its Tracking ID Summary Report. Amazon’s U.S. help documentation currently says a U.S. Associates account is limited to 100 tracking IDs unless Amazon support grants additional capacity. Its reports can include clicks, ordered or shipped items, revenue, conversion rate, referral commissions, and tracking-ID summaries. Amazon says ordered-item and bounty reports are generally updated hourly, while the earnings report is current through the previous day; those timings are specific to Amazon and should not be generalized to every network. See Amazon’s tracking-ID documentation and Amazon’s report-timing documentation.

Amazon’s U.S. reporting rules also illustrate why clicks and commissions can appear in different periods. Its documentation describes a 24-hour session window, with certain cart-related behavior potentially extending under its rules for up to 90 days. Do not use those figures as a generic affiliate-cookie duration; every program defines its own rules. Amazon can also show an order without a click in the selected date range when a shopper added an item to a cart earlier and purchased later. See Amazon’s report definitions and cart/session documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Impact: Impact supports SubId1, SubId2, SubId3, and SharedId. A link may contain a value such as:

https://trackingdomain.net/c/1234567/654321/4321?subId1=review_top_cta

Impact says sub-ID values are visible to the partner in reporting, while Shared IDs are visible to both the partner and the brand. Its reports can break performance down by clicks, actions, sale conversion rate, earnings per click, reversals, and other metrics. See Impact’s parameter explanation and Impact’s sub-ID reporting guide.

Awin: Awin’s Click References Report aggregates performance by ClickRef, including clicks, transaction quantity, sales amount, and commission. Awin’s documentation says the report displays only the first 50 characters of a ClickRef and supports up to 20,000 unique ClickRefs before the report is disabled for 30 days. These are Awin-specific limits, so check the current documentation before designing a high-volume naming system. See Awin’s Click References Report documentation.

What this method can tell you

  • Which article or platform generated credited sales.
  • Which CTA, comparison-table row, or text link generated the most earnings.
  • Which product or merchant converts best for your audience.
  • Which commissions are pending, approved, rejected, or reversed.
  • Whether a high-click placement is actually producing revenue.

For placement-level affiliate reporting, do not use one identical affiliate URL everywhere when the network supports granular identifiers. Create distinct identifiers for the top CTA, comparison table, inline recommendation, YouTube description, email, and social post.

Method 2: Track outbound affiliate clicks with GA4 Enhanced Measurement

GA4 can automatically measure outbound clicks when Enhanced Measurement is enabled. Google defines an outbound click as a click that takes a visitor away from the current domain. The built-in event is generally named click, with parameters such as the destination URL, link domain, and whether the click was outbound.

This is a good starting point for a beginner because it requires little or no custom code. It can show which pages generate the most outbound clicks, which merchant domains receive traffic, and how click behavior varies by device, landing page, or acquisition source.

Current GA4 setup path

  1. Open the relevant GA4 property.
  2. Go to Admin.
  3. Under Data collection and modification, select Data streams.
  4. Select your website data stream.
  5. Turn on Enhanced measurement.
  6. Open the Enhanced Measurement settings and confirm that outbound clicks are enabled.
  7. Visit your website in a test browser and click a normal affiliate link.
  8. Check Realtime or DebugView.

Google’s current instructions also support a structured Exploration using the dimensions Link domain, Link URL, and Outbound, with Event count as the metric. Filter for Outbound = true or for the affiliate destination domain. See Google’s outbound-click documentation.

What GA4 proves—and what it does not

GA4 can prove that the Google tag observed an outbound click from your website. It cannot prove that:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The merchant recorded the click.
  • The visitor purchased something.
  • The purchase fell within the program’s attribution window.
  • Your affiliate account received credit.
  • The resulting commission was approved rather than reversed.

For that reason, label the GA4 metric affiliate outbound clicks, not affiliate conversions. You can mark a click event as a GA4 key event if it is an important business action, but reserve affiliate conversion for the sale or lead defined and credited by the network. Google’s current Analytics terminology uses “key event” for important actions; see Google’s key-event documentation.

When automatic outbound tracking may miss or change a click

Enhanced Measurement may not be enough when:

  • The link first goes to a redirect on your own domain.
  • The user clicks a JavaScript button rather than a normal anchor element.
  • The destination is configured for GA4 cross-domain measurement.
  • A consent banner prevents Analytics from running.
  • An ad blocker, browser privacy feature, or network filter blocks the Google tag.
  • A page builder or script rewrites the URL after page load.

Google says links to domains configured for cross-domain measurement do not trigger the automatic outbound-click event. A same-domain redirect can also prevent the automatic event from being classified as outbound because the first navigation is still within your domain; treat this as an implementation consequence of GA4’s outbound-click definition, then test your particular setup.

Method 3: Use Google Tag Manager or custom events for placement-level tracking

Use GTM when you need to distinguish a click on a button from a click in a comparison table, or when you want to attach context such as the article, merchant, product, CTA type, and placement. It provides more control than GA4’s automatic event, but it also creates more opportunities for configuration errors.

GTM setup

  1. Open the website’s GTM web container.
  2. In Variables, enable the built-in click variables Click URL, Click Text, Click Classes, Click ID, Click Target, and Page Path.
  3. Create a Link Click trigger.
  4. Select Some Link Clicks, rather than tracking every link on the site.
  5. Filter the trigger by a reliable condition, such as Click URL containing the affiliate network domain, Click URL containing the merchant domain, Click Classes containing affiliate-cta, or Click ID matching a known CTA.
  6. Create a Google Analytics event tag with an event name such as affiliate_link_click.
  7. Add useful parameters, for example link_url, link_text, page_path, link_location, merchant, or product_id.
  8. Use GTM Preview mode and click each test placement.
  9. Confirm that the tag fires once, the destination opens, and the event appears in GA4 DebugView or Realtime.
  10. Test desktop and mobile before publishing.

Google documents the available built-in click variables and the general process for creating and testing Google Analytics events. Current GTM screens may use Google tag terminology rather than the older “GA4 Configuration” label; Google says the Google tag replaced the GA4 Configuration tag in Tag Manager, while GA4 Event tags remain available. See Google’s tag terminology documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example event parameters

event_name: affiliate_link_click
link_url: {{Click URL}}
link_text: {{Click Text}}
page_path: {{Page Path}}
link_location: {{Click Classes}}
merchant: example_merchant

If you use custom parameters such as link_location, send the event first and then register the parameter as an event-scoped custom dimension if you want to use it in standard reports. Google says custom event parameters may take 24–48 hours to become available in some reporting contexts. See Google’s custom-dimension documentation.

A lightweight custom-code option

If the site already has a Google tag installed, a developer can send an event from the link itself:

<a
  href='https://merchant.example/affiliate-link'
  data-affiliate-placement='review_top_cta'
  onclick="gtag('event', 'affiliate_link_click', {
    link_url: this.href,
    link_text: this.innerText,
    link_location: this.dataset.affiliatePlacement
  });"
>
  Check the current price
</a>

GTM is usually easier for a non-developer to maintain. Either approach should be tested after changes to themes, page builders, consent tools, or link-management plugins.

Prevent duplicate events

One physical click should not become four analytics events because the same link is being tracked by Enhanced Measurement, GTM, custom JavaScript, and a WordPress plugin. Choose one canonical GA4 click event or deliberately give each system a different purpose and event name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In GTM Preview mode, click one link and inspect the event timeline. Confirm that the relevant tag fires exactly once. If both the automatic click event and your custom affiliate_link_click event are useful, that is acceptable—but do not add them together and call the total unique clicks. See Google’s documentation on testing and debugging tags.

Method 4: Use a link manager or redirect layer carefully

A link manager creates a publisher-controlled URL such as:

https://example.com/go/headphones-top-cta

That URL then redirects the visitor to the complete affiliate link. The main benefits are operational:

  • Change a merchant destination once instead of editing every article.
  • Keep a central inventory of affiliate URLs.
  • Find stale, broken, or outdated destinations.
  • Give each placement a readable slug.
  • Review link-level logs where the tool supports them.
  • Apply consistent attributes such as rel='sponsored'.

On WordPress, Pretty Links and Redirection are examples, not universal recommendations. Pretty Links documents tracking modes that can record aggregate totals or more detailed information such as timestamps, referrers, visitor IDs, country, browser, operating system, and device, depending on configuration. It also documents filtering and CSV export in its reports. See Pretty Links’ tracking documentation and Pretty Links’ reporting documentation. The WordPress Redirection plugin supports redirect logging, hit counts, 404 monitoring, filtering, and exporting; see its plugin documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using a redirect

  1. Read the specific affiliate program’s terms.
  2. Confirm that redirects, link management, and cloaking are allowed.
  3. Set the destination to the complete network-generated URL.
  4. Preserve every required query parameter, sub-ID, click reference, deep-link value, and encoded character.
  5. Configure bot filtering where available.
  6. Understand whether the tool stores IP addresses, visitor IDs, referrers, or device data.
  7. Test the publisher URL, network redirect, final merchant destination, identifier, analytics event, and eventual network report.

Amazon is an important example of why you cannot assume cloaking is safe. Amazon’s current U.S. participation requirements say Associates must not cloak, hide, spoof, or otherwise obscure the URL of the site containing Special Links so Amazon cannot reasonably determine the referring site. Amazon also prohibits automatic redirects to Amazon without a visitor first clicking a link. Its OneLink documentation separately says shortened links created by third-party shorteners are currently not supported for international redirection. Review Amazon’s participation requirements, its automatic-redirect guidance, and its OneLink documentation before using a shortener or redirect with Amazon links.

What a link-manager log does not prove

A link-manager click may be generated by a real visitor, bot, social-preview crawler, email-security scanner, prefetch request, or repeated click. It may also be recorded even when the merchant never receives the request or the network cannot attribute a conversion. Treat the log as a maintenance and traffic signal—not as proof of a commissionable human referral.

UTM parameters versus affiliate sub-IDs

UTMs and affiliate-network identifiers serve different systems.

A UTM parameter labels a campaign for the Analytics property that receives the tagged URL. For example, UTMs are useful on a YouTube link leading to your own website:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
utm_source=youtube
utm_medium=video
utm_campaign=headphones_review
utm_content=description

Appending those UTMs to a merchant’s affiliate URL does not automatically make them appear in your own GA4 property. The destination merchant would need to run your Analytics property, or a tracking layer would need to capture and report the parameters. Google explains how campaign parameters are processed in its UTM documentation. Google also notes that UTM values are case-sensitive and recommends consistent use of at least utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign.

Use the affiliate network’s sub-ID, tracking ID, or click-reference field for reporting inside the network:

subId1=review_top_cta
clickref=review_top_cta

The exact parameter name varies. Use both systems when appropriate: a UTM can identify how someone reached your site, while a network sub-ID can identify which affiliate placement sent the person to the merchant.

Do not manually remove network parameters or brand metadata to make a URL shorter. Impact warns that changing tracking links can prevent reporting information from working, and that deep-link destinations may require percent encoding. See Impact’s guidance on reporting information and tracking links.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to track an affiliate link by article, platform, button, or placement

Use a three-part measurement design:

  1. Article or content identifier: best_headphones_2026 or an internal article ID.
  2. Placement identifier: top_cta, comparison_table, inline_text, or sidebar.
  3. Platform identifier: blog, youtube, email, or instagram.

For example, create network identifiers such as:

headphones_top_cta_blog
headphones_comparison_table_blog
headphones_description_youtube
headphones_feature_email

Use the same naming convention across networks, but keep each network’s parameter syntax intact. In GA4 or GTM, send the placement as an event parameter. In the network, use its sub-ID or click-reference field. In a link manager, use a readable slug only if the program permits that redirect.

Then compare:

  • Outbound click-through rate: Affiliate outbound clicks divided by relevant page views or sessions.
  • Network-reported conversion rate: Credited actions divided by network-reported clicks, using the network’s definitions.
  • Earnings per click: Commission or earnings divided by the relevant click count.
  • Approved commission rate: Approved commissions compared with initially reported commissions.
  • Reversal rate: Reversed actions or commissions divided by reported actions or commissions.

Raw clicks alone can reward a prominent but unprofitable button. A smaller placement with stronger purchase intent may produce more approved revenue.

Recommended setup by type of publisher

Situation Recommended setup
Beginner with one site and a few links Affiliate-network dashboard plus GA4 Enhanced Measurement
WordPress publisher with frequently changing destinations Network reporting plus a compliant link manager, after checking program terms
Publisher comparing buttons, tables, and text links Network sub-IDs plus GTM or custom events
Creator promoting on YouTube, email, and social media Separate network sub-IDs or tracking IDs for each platform and placement
High-volume publisher Network sub-IDs, server-side or first-party logging where practical, automated link audits, and regular report reconciliation
Merchant or affiliate-program owner First-party click-ID storage and platform-supported server-side or postback conversion tracking

Server-side or postback tracking is primarily a merchant or affiliate-program capability. A blogger linking to another company’s checkout generally cannot install conversion tracking inside that company’s website or force its attribution system to report back to GA4.

End-to-end testing checklist

Test a new affiliate link before publishing it and again after changing its destination, theme, page builder, consent tool, or redirect settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the original affiliate URL in a clean browser session.
  2. Check the network parameters. Confirm that the affiliate ID, tracking ID, sub-ID, click reference, and deep-link values are present.
  3. Follow every redirect. Confirm that required parameters survive each hop.
  4. Check the final destination. Verify the country, merchant, product, and landing page.
  5. Test GA4. Use Realtime or DebugView to confirm the expected outbound or custom event.
  6. Test GTM. In Preview mode, confirm that the correct trigger fires once.
  7. Test on mobile. Check the same link in a mobile browser and, where relevant, from the platform where it will be promoted.
  8. Check the network report. Allow for that program’s documented reporting delay and verify that the click or identifier appears.
  9. Record the result. Add the final working URL, identifier, placement, and test date to your link inventory.

Why your numbers disagree

Symptom Likely explanation What to check
GA4 reports a click but the network reports no commission The visitor did not buy, the action is delayed, another affiliate received credit, or the commission is still pending Network attribution window, action status, reporting delay, and reversal rules
The network reports a sale but GA4 shows no matching click The click occurred from email, social media, YouTube, another site, or during a period when Analytics was blocked Network sub-ID, consent status, device, date range, and other traffic sources
GA4 reports too many clicks Enhanced Measurement, GTM, custom JavaScript, and a plugin are all recording the same click GTM Preview, GA4 event names, plugin settings, and duplicate tags
A redirect works but commissions disappear The redirect stripped an affiliate ID, sub-ID, click reference, deep-link parameter, or encoding Compare the original URL, every redirect response, and the final destination
A link-manager log shows many clicks but few sales Bots, scanners, prefetching, repeated clicks, low purchase intent, poor merchant conversion, or mobile checkout problems Bot filtering, device breakdown, approved conversion data, and earnings per click
A link suddenly stops working The merchant changed its URL, the program ended, the link expired, or a plugin altered the destination Network link generator, merchant landing page, redirect destination, and program status

Do not decide that either GA4 or the affiliate network is wrong simply because totals differ. They may use different definitions, time zones, date windows, filters, consent rules, and attribution models. Compare like with like: clicks to clicks, actions to actions, and approved commissions to approved commissions.

Disclosure, search-engine attributes, and privacy

Disclose the financial relationship

For a U.S.-oriented audience, the FTC says affiliate marketers should disclose their relationship with the retailer clearly and conspicuously. A phrase such as “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post” explains the relationship more clearly than the words “affiliate link” alone. Place the disclosure close to the recommendation and link. See the FTC’s endorsement guidance.

For video, the FTC says the disclosure should appear in the video itself, not only in the description. For social posts, it should be easy to notice and understand rather than hidden behind “more,” in a comment, or only on a profile page. See the FTC’s social-media disclosure guidance. Other countries may impose additional requirements, so this is general U.S. guidance rather than individualized legal advice.

Amazon’s U.S. Associates Agreement requires the specific statement “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” That is an Amazon contractual requirement, not a universal substitute for every legal or platform disclosure. Review Amazon’s current agreement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the appropriate link attribute

Google recommends marking affiliate links with rel='sponsored'. Google says nofollow remains acceptable, but sponsored is preferred for paid or affiliate links. This attribute tells search engines about the relationship; it does not measure clicks or commissions.

<a href='https://merchant.example/affiliate' rel='sponsored noopener'>
  Check the current price
</a>

Client-side analytics and link logs should also be integrated with your consent configuration. Consent choices can prevent tags from firing or limit the information collected. Google’s Tag Manager data-layer documentation explains why consent updates need to be processed before tags fire so they receive the correct consent state. If a WordPress tracker stores IP addresses, visitor IDs, referrers, or device information, review its settings and your privacy obligations before enabling detailed visitor-level tracking.

A simple operating system for affiliate-link measurement

Once your links are generating meaningful traffic, maintain a small link inventory with these columns:

  • Content URL and title.
  • Merchant and affiliate network.
  • Original network-generated URL.
  • Tracking ID, sub-ID, or ClickRef.
  • Publisher-owned slug, if permitted.
  • Placement and platform.
  • Date created and last tested.
  • Destination status.
  • GA4 event or GTM trigger used.
  • Latest clicks, actions, approved commissions, and reversals.

Review the inventory monthly or whenever a merchant changes its product pages or program terms. Start with the highest-traffic articles and links. A broken destination or stripped query parameter can quietly eliminate revenue even when the page continues to receive visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can GA4 track affiliate sales?

Not by itself when the sale occurs on another company’s website. GA4 can track an outbound click from your site, but the affiliate network or merchant must report the attributed action and commission. Use network reporting for sales and GA4 for on-site click behavior.

Are affiliate clicks the same as conversions?

No. A click is an opportunity for a later action. A conversion is the sale, lead, install, or subscription defined by the program. The network may later mark the action pending, approved, rejected, or reversed.

Should I add UTM parameters to affiliate links?

Use UTMs mainly to label traffic arriving at your own website or another destination that runs your Analytics property. For reporting inside the affiliate network, use its tracking IDs, sub-IDs, or click-reference fields. Adding a UTM to a merchant URL does not automatically send that data to your own GA4 property.

Can I use Bitly or another link shortener for affiliate links?

Only if the specific affiliate program permits it and the shortener preserves all required tracking information. Some programs restrict cloaking or obscuring the referring URL. Amazon, for example, has restrictions on obscured links and says its OneLink feature currently does not support third-party shortened links.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why are affiliate-network clicks different from GA4 clicks?

The systems may count different events and use different filters, time zones, reporting delays, consent rules, bot handling, and attribution logic. GA4 may miss blocked or custom-implemented clicks, while a network may count redirects or clicks from email, social media, and other platforms.

How do I track affiliate links from YouTube, email, or social media?

Create separate network tracking IDs, sub-IDs, or click references for each platform and placement, such as youtube_description, pinned_comment_youtube, or newsletter_feature_email. Do not rely only on referrer data because apps and email clients may omit or alter it.

What is the best method for a beginner?

Start with the affiliate network’s dashboard and GA4 Enhanced Measurement. Once you need to compare buttons, articles, platforms, or placements, add network sub-IDs and GTM custom events. Add a link manager only when centralized maintenance is worth the extra redirect and compliance considerations.

The Bottom Line

Use the affiliate network to answer “What was credited and paid?” and GA4 or GTM to answer “What did visitors click on my site?” Add a distinct network sub-ID or tracking ID to each meaningful article, platform, and placement. Preserve the complete network URL, test every redirect, prevent duplicate analytics events, and check program rules before using a shortener or cloaking layer.
