Use both measures, but do not combine them into one score. Income is the money your household receives during a period; net worth is the value of what it owns minus what it owes. Income shows earning power and net worth shows accumulated financial resources. A household can rank high on one and ordinary or vulnerable on the other.
There is no official universal cutoff for “wealthy.” Make the comparison meaningful by stating the year, geography, household or family unit, income definition, wealth definition and reference percentile. Then examine liquidity and debt rather than relying on a headline number.

What “wealthy” means in a household context
“Wealthy” is a relative description, not a category assigned by one government threshold. It can mean earning substantially more than comparable households, owning substantially more after debts, or having enough liquid resources to remain secure when income stops. Those are related but different outcomes.

A defensible conclusion sounds like “our pretax household income is above the latest national median, while our net worth is near the middle of the reported distribution,” not simply “we are wealthy.”
Income and net worth answer different questions
| Measure | What it measures | Time frame | Why it matters | What it misses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Household income | Money received by household members, under the selected definition | Usually a calendar year | Current earning capacity, spending ability and tax-planning context | Existing savings, debts, asset values and income stability |
| Net worth | Total assets minus total liabilities | A point-in-time balance | Financial cushion, ownership and ability to withstand an income shock | How quickly assets can be accessed, future earnings and whether values fluctuate |
| Liquid net worth | Cash and investments that can reasonably be accessed, minus relevant debts | A point-in-time balance | Short-term resilience during unemployment, illness or another emergency | Home equity, retirement security and other long-term resources |
Income is a flow: it arrives over months and years. Net worth is a stock: it is measured at a particular date. A high-income household can have little net worth after taxes, housing costs and debt payments. A retired household can have modest current income but substantial investments and home equity.

| U.S. Census Bureau, Income in the United States: 2025, released September 15, 2026 | $87,460 median household income in 2025 | Current-dollar CPS ASEC result for calendar year 2025. The main measure is pretax money income and excludes in-kind transfers. Census reported this as the highest median in its series beginning in 1967. |
| Federal Reserve Board, 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances results, October 9, 2026 | $82,200 real median family income in 2025 | Family measure, not a household measure; reported as up 7% from 2022. “Real” means adjusted for inflation in the Federal Reserve release. |
| Federal Reserve Board, 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances results, October 9, 2026 | $215,900 real median family net worth in 2025 | Family net worth measure, reported as up 2% from 2022. It should not be treated as a direct continuation of the Census household-wealth series. |
| U.S. Census Bureau, Wealth of Households: 2022, November 2024 | $176,500 median household wealth in 2022 | SIPP household measure. The 90th percentile was $1,603,000, so one in ten households exceeded that level in the reported distribution. |
Use the $87,460 figure when comparing a household’s 2025 pretax money income with the CPS ASEC household median. Use the Federal Reserve figures when your comparison is specifically to families in the 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances. Do not subtract or average these numbers to create a single “wealthy household” cutoff.
Step 1: Define the household and the year
Write down exactly who is included. A household generally refers to people sharing a residence, while a family definition can be narrower. The Census income report uses households; the Federal Reserve figures above use families. If you are comparing your own finances, use the same members for both income and net worth and state whether you are measuring one person, a couple, dependents or an extended household.

Choose a date for net worth, such as December 31 or the date of your latest statements. Choose a full calendar year for income. Avoid comparing a current monthly salary with a year-end net-worth statement without annualizing and documenting the difference.
Step 2: Calculate household income consistently
Build an annual total using one definition. For a pretax money-income comparison, include wages, salaries, self-employment income, bonuses, commissions, interest, dividends, rents, pensions and other money receipts that the selected statistical series counts. Keep a separate worksheet for post-tax income if that is more useful for spending decisions.
Recommended Free Tools
- Collect twelve months of records: pay statements, business ledgers, benefit statements, bank and brokerage tax forms, and rental records.
- Separate recurring and irregular amounts: identify bonuses, commissions, capital gains and one-time payments rather than assuming they will repeat.
- Choose pretax or post-tax: do not compare a post-tax household number with the Census pretax median.
- Document exclusions: Census money income excludes in-kind transfers, so note whether your personal total includes benefits that the benchmark does not.
- Annualize carefully: multiply a stable monthly amount by twelve, but use a reasonable average for seasonal or volatile income.
The result is a comparison number, not necessarily the amount available to spend. Taxes, payroll deductions, health premiums, debt service and savings contributions can make disposable cash far lower than gross income.
Step 3: Calculate net worth from an inventory
Net worth equals assets minus liabilities:
Net worth = total assets − total debts.
Assets to list
- Checking, savings and money-market balances.
- Taxable brokerage accounts, certificates of deposit and other investments at current market value.
- Retirement accounts, if your chosen measure includes them.
- Primary-residence and other real-estate equity: estimate market value, then list the associated mortgage separately.
- Business ownership, vehicles and other significant property when a defensible value is available.
Liabilities to list
- Mortgages and home-equity loans.
- Credit-card balances, including promotional balances that will eventually require payment.
- Student, auto, personal and business loans.
- Tax obligations, medical debts and other legally enforceable liabilities.
Use account statements and realistic market values, not the amount originally paid. Record the valuation date. If an asset is difficult to sell or price, mark the estimate and calculate a second version that excludes it.
Important limits in published wealth measures
Census defines wealth as assets owned minus debts owed, so wealth can be negative. Its 2022 SIPP brief notes that the measure excludes major assets including equity in pension plans and the value of home furnishings. A household’s reported net worth can therefore differ from a personal balance sheet that includes every retirement right or possession.

Before comparing your figure with a percentile, check the source’s asset and debt coverage. If your own calculation includes pension equity while the survey measure excludes it, label your number as broader rather than claiming an exact percentile match. Keep two totals when useful: a broad net worth and a conservative net worth that leaves out uncertain or illiquid items.

Step 4: Compare each measure with an appropriate distribution
Use the benchmark that matches your unit and definition. For income, the 2025 Census median household figure of $87,460 is a midpoint: half of households were above it and half below it under that report’s definition. It is not a wealthy threshold. Being twice the median does not automatically imply a particular lifestyle because taxes, location and household size vary.
For wealth, the 2022 Census SIPP median household figure was $176,500 and the 90th percentile was $1,603,000. Crossing the 90th-percentile level in that specific distribution means exceeding nine out of ten households represented in the report; it does not establish a universal definition of wealth for every year or survey.
The Federal Reserve’s 2025 SCF median family net worth of $215,900 is a separate family measure. Compare it only with a similarly defined family figure, and do not infer a trend by placing it directly beside the 2022 Census household figure.
Step 5: Interpret the income–wealth combination
| Income position | Net-worth position | What the combination may indicate | What to check next |
|---|---|---|---|
| High | High | Strong current earning power and accumulated resources | Liquidity, concentration in one asset, insurance and tax exposure |
| High | Low or negative | Good earnings but limited accumulation, often because of debt, housing costs or a short earning history | Debt interest, savings rate, emergency reserves and whether income is stable |
| Low or moderate | High | Substantial accumulated assets, possibly with retirement, investment or home-equity income replacing wages | Withdrawal sustainability, taxes, health costs and how much wealth is liquid |
| Low or moderate | Low or negative | Limited current cash flow and limited financial reserves | Benefits eligibility, debt restructuring, essential expenses and protection against shocks |
This matrix is a diagnostic, not a ranking. A high net worth concentrated in a home may provide security but little cash for a short-term bill. A high salary from a volatile bonus plan may be less dependable than a lower, stable income.

Step 6: Add liquidity and resilience tests
Wealth matters partly because it can supply liquidity during unemployment, illness or divorce. Ask how much of your net worth could be accessed without selling a home, incurring a large tax bill or taking a substantial market loss.
Liquidity test
- Add cash and near-cash accounts.
- Add investments that can be sold promptly, using a conservative current value.
- Subtract debts that must be paid soon and any penalties or taxes that would make access costly.
- Compare the result with essential monthly expenses and the length of time your income could be interrupted.
Debt test
Calculate total debt, monthly required payments and the interest rates. Two households with identical net worth can have very different risk if one carries variable-rate debt or must make large monthly payments. Include secured debt in net worth even when the underlying asset has value; the asset and liability belong on opposite sides of the equation.
Income-stability test
Separate guaranteed or predictable income from commissions, bonuses, business profits and investment returns. Use a conservative income scenario when deciding whether your household is financially secure.

These examples show the method; they are not population statistics.
Household A: high income, modest net worth
Two adults earn $180,000 pretax, including a variable $30,000 bonus. They own $120,000 in retirement and taxable accounts and a home worth $500,000. Their mortgage and other debts total $470,000, producing net worth of $150,000 before any assets outside the list. Their income is well above the 2025 Census median household figure, but their net worth is below the 2022 Census household median because substantial debt offsets the assets. The household should test finances using base salary rather than assuming the bonus continues.

Household B: moderate income, substantial assets
A retired couple receives $70,000 in annual pension and investment income. They own a debt-free home worth $450,000 and have $900,000 in retirement and taxable accounts, with no other debts. Their net worth is about $1.35 million, while current income is below the 2025 Census household median. Their key question is not whether earnings are high, but how much of the portfolio is liquid, how withdrawals are taxed and whether spending can continue through market declines.
Household C: negative net worth during early adulthood
A single worker earns $95,000 and has $20,000 in savings, a $35,000 vehicle loan and $110,000 in student debt. Net worth is negative $125,000 if the vehicle is valued at $20,000. Income is above the national median household reference, yet the balance sheet shows limited accumulated resources. Debt repayment, retirement contributions and an emergency reserve may change the picture faster than a label such as “rich” would.
Why survey numbers do not line up
Differences between published values are often methodological rather than errors:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Different surveys: CPS ASEC measures income, SIPP supplies the Census wealth figures, and the SCF supplies the Federal Reserve family figures.
- Different units: household and family are not interchangeable.
- Different years: the income benchmark is for 2025, the Federal Reserve figures are for 2025, and the cited Census wealth distribution is for 2022.
- Different price concepts: the Census median household income is a current-dollar figure, while the Federal Reserve family figures cited above are real, inflation-adjusted measures.
- Different asset coverage: pension-plan equity and home furnishings can be excluded from a survey wealth measure.
The Census income and wealth index identifies these as distinct products. Treat each series as its own distribution unless a source explicitly provides a compatible comparison.
How geography and household size change the answer
A national median is a starting point, not a household budget. Housing, transportation, childcare, taxes and health costs vary sharply by location. A household above the national income median may feel financially constrained in a high-cost area, while the same income can provide more discretionary capacity elsewhere.
Household size also matters. Per-person or family-adjusted comparisons can be more informative than a raw household total when comparing a single adult with a couple raising children. If the source does not provide the adjustment you need, state that limitation rather than presenting the national median as a personalized standard.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using salary as wealth: salary is income; it becomes part of wealth only after saving and investing, and after debts are deducted.
- Counting an asset without its loan: list the home and mortgage separately so equity is not overstated.
- Mixing pretax and post-tax figures: label both and compare like with like.
- Comparing households with families: use the population unit named by the source.
- Combining years into a trend: do not connect the 2022 Census wealth percentile to the 2025 Federal Reserve family median as if they were one continuous series.
- Ignoring illiquidity: home equity and retirement assets may not fund an immediate bill without a sale, loan, tax or penalty.
- Assuming a survey includes everything you own: check exclusions such as pension rights and furnishings.
- Calling one percentile a universal cutoff: a percentile describes a distribution, not a legal or moral definition of wealth.
A repeatable household review
- Set the measurement date and list everyone included.
- Compute annual income under a named definition, separating recurring and variable amounts.
- Inventory assets and liabilities using current values and the same date.
- Calculate broad net worth and, if useful, a conservative liquid net worth.
- Select a matching benchmark by survey, year, unit and geography.
- Record your approximate position relative to the benchmark without claiming a universal wealthy threshold.
- Stress-test a lower-income year, a major expense and a market decline.
- Review the worksheet at least annually and whenever employment, housing, marriage, divorce, inheritance or retirement changes the household balance sheet.
Bottom line for deciding whether you are wealthy
Income alone tells you how much money is arriving; net worth alone tells you what has accumulated. Use both, then add liquidity, debt and income stability. The latest national anchors are a 2025 Census median household income of $87,460, a 2025 Federal Reserve median family net worth of $215,900 in real terms, and a 2022 Census median household wealth figure of $176,500 with a 90th percentile of $1,603,000. Because those figures use different surveys, years and population units, the honest answer for your household is a documented comparison—not a single magic number.
