Start by checking the adviser and firm in official regulator records, then read the firm’s Form CRS and Form ADV Part 2. Continue checking statements and trade confirmations after you hire anyone.
The five-minute trust test
Do not judge an adviser by a polished website, a referral, impressive initials, or a confident market forecast. Use a sequence that produces records you can check:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Identify the exact person and legal firm. Search both in Investor.gov’s investment-professional search, which connects to the SEC and state Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) system. Use FINRA BrokerCheck when the person or firm is a broker or brokerage firm.
- Confirm current registration and review disclosures. Check employment history, regulatory events, customer disputes, and other items shown in the official record.
- Read the latest Form CRS and Form ADV Part 2 brochure. These documents describe services, fees, conflicts, standards of conduct, limitations, and disciplinary information.
- Make compensation and product costs calculable. Ask who receives every payment and what behavior or product choice can increase it.
- Audit the recommendation. It should connect your objective, time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity and tax circumstances to a specific strategy, with risks and alternatives explained in plain language.
This process cannot guarantee a good investment result. It can establish whether the person is identifiable and authorized to provide the service, whether incentives are disclosed, and whether you have enough information to make an informed decision.

Search the exact name
Ask for the adviser’s full legal name, firm name, office location, and any registration or identification number. Enter the information yourself in Investor.gov’s investment-professional search. Check both the individual and the firm; Investor.gov explicitly advises investors to do this. If the person works as a broker or the firm is a brokerage, search FINRA BrokerCheck as well.

Match the record to the person in front of you. Names can be similar, and a representative may use a marketing name that differs from the registered entity. Confirm that the email domain, office, employer and job title are consistent with the official record. A profile on social media, a recommendation from a friend, or a professional-looking website is not a substitute for regulator records.
Check whether the authorization is current and relevant
Registration is not a quality rating. It tells you that a regulator has a record for the person or firm and identifies the services and jurisdictions associated with it. Read the current status and the business activities shown. An individual who is registered only for a limited role may not be authorized to provide every service being discussed.
Read the history, not just the first line
Review employment history, customer disputes, regulatory events, bankruptcies or other disclosures that appear in the record. One disclosure does not automatically prove that advice is unusable, but it is a reason to ask for dates, outcomes and the adviser’s explanation. Treat an unwillingness to discuss an official disclosure as a material warning.
Investor.gov cautions that “It is really risky to invest with someone who isn’t licensed and we urge you not to do it.” Do not send money or sign an advisory agreement while registration information is missing, inconsistent or impossible to verify.
2. Read the documents that define the relationship
Request the most recent Form CRS and Form ADV Part 2 brochure before signing or transferring assets. Give yourself time to read them; a meeting summary or slide deck is not a replacement for the regulatory documents.

| Document | What it is designed to show | Items to locate |
|---|---|---|
| Form CRS | A short, standardized relationship summary with headings intended to help investors compare firms. | Services, account types, fees and costs, conflicts, standards of conduct, disciplinary history and questions to ask. |
| Form ADV Part 2 brochure | A fuller narrative of the adviser’s business and practices. | Detailed services, account minimums, fee schedules, investment strategies, conflicts, affiliated businesses, outside compensation and disciplinary information. |
Compare the sales conversation with the filings
Make a two-column note: “What I was told” and “What the document says.” Reconcile differences about ongoing monitoring, financial planning, tax help, account minimums, investment choices and termination rights. If the representative promises a service that is absent from the documents, ask for the promise in a written agreement or treat it as unconfirmed.
Look specifically for product limitations, proprietary or affiliated funds, insurance or lending businesses, outside compensation, and disciplinary disclosures. Form CRS is deliberately organized with comparable headings, so it can help you compare two firms without relying on each firm’s marketing language.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Make every dollar of compensation understandable
Ask the adviser to list every recurring and one-time charge and identify the recipient. A percentage that sounds small can be a substantial dollar amount, especially as the account grows. For example, a 1% annual advisory fee on a $100,000 account equals $1,000 for one year before any investment return; ask how and when it is debited and whether the percentage applies to cash or only invested assets.
| Compensation approach | Questions to ask | Potential incentive to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Asset-based fee | What assets are included, what is the annual rate, how often is it billed, and is there a minimum? | The adviser may earn more when assets are moved into the account or when the balance increases. |
| Hourly or flat fee | What work is included, what is the estimated total, and what triggers additional billing? | Scope can expand beyond the initial estimate unless the engagement is defined. |
| Transaction-based commission | Who pays the commission, how much is it per transaction, and are there lower-cost alternatives? | More trades or a particular product can generate more compensation. |
| Commission plus advisory fee | Which services use each charge, and can the same account or transaction be charged twice? | Different parts of the relationship can create overlapping incentives. |
| Wrap fee | Which trading, custody or advisory costs are included, and which remain separate? | A fee may appear comprehensive while certain products or transactions cost extra. |
| Third-party compensation | Does a fund company, insurer, platform, lender or another party pay the adviser or firm? | The recommendation may be influenced by revenue that does not appear on your invoice. |
Separate the adviser’s fee from the investment’s costs
Request a dollar illustration that includes advisory or commission charges, fund operating expenses, trading costs, custody fees, account fees, surrender charges and any other product costs. Ask who receives each amount. A low advisory fee does not necessarily mean a low total cost if the recommended products or transactions are expensive.
Ask whether the professional earns more when you trade, select a particular product, use an affiliated service, borrow against the account or increase assets under management. The answer should identify the incentive and explain how the firm addresses it. “No commission” does not mean “no cost”; it means you need to identify the other charges.

4. Test conflicts and product limitations
Ask what the adviser can and cannot recommend
Some professionals can recommend a broad range of investments; others are required or permitted to use a limited menu, affiliated products, proprietary funds, insurance contracts or lending products. Ask directly:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Are you limited to your firm’s products or platform?
- Do you or an affiliate manage, issue or receive revenue from the investments you recommend?
- Can you recommend products outside that menu?
- Do you receive payments, bonuses, travel, incentives or other benefits from a product provider?
- What alternatives were considered and rejected, and why?
A conflict does not automatically invalidate advice. It must be disclosed in a way you can understand, addressed in the recommendation and consistent with the written agreement and applicable conduct standard. If the explanation is buried in jargon or the adviser refuses to discuss alternatives, pause.
Distinguish a conflict from a hidden restriction
An adviser may openly state that a firm uses a particular platform. That is different from implying access to the whole market while quietly excluding lower-cost or unaffiliated options. Ask for the limitation in writing and determine whether it affects the choices that matter for your goal.
5. Treat credentials as evidence to verify, not proof of quality
Titles and designations can indicate education, but the initials alone do not establish competence or suitability. Ask who issued each designation, what coursework and examination it required, whether continuing education is required, and whether the credential is active. SEC guidance warns investors not to treat a professional designation as a badge of knowledge without understanding what it means.
Then test experience against your situation. Ask how often the adviser works with clients who have your type of income, retirement plan, concentrated stock, debt, tax status, liquidity need or time horizon. A person can be properly credentialed yet not be a good fit for a specialized problem. If the adviser cannot explain relevant experience without promising a result, seek another opinion.

6. Require a recommendation you can audit
A credible recommendation is a chain of reasoning, not a prediction. Ask the adviser to state the objective, assumptions, risks, costs, liquidity consequences, alternatives and conditions that would make the recommendation unsuitable.
Questions that expose the reasoning
- What specific goal is this designed to meet, and over what time horizon?
- What level of loss or volatility did you assume I can tolerate?
- How does the strategy account for my need to access cash?
- What taxes, debts, employer-plan restrictions or other constraints changed the recommendation?
- What are the main risks, including the possibility of losing principal?
- What lower-cost, simpler or more liquid alternatives did you consider?
- Under what circumstances would you change or stop this recommendation?
- Which fees and conflicts affect your choice?
Ask for the answer in plain language and request a written summary. You should be able to explain the investment, its worst-important risks, total costs, liquidity restrictions and exit conditions to another person. If you cannot, do not proceed merely because the adviser says the product is sophisticated.
Separate a suitable recommendation from a guaranteed outcome
Even a recommendation that fits your profile can lose money. Be especially cautious when someone promises guaranteed returns, claims there is no risk, invokes urgency, demands secrecy, discourages a second opinion, or asks you to move money before providing documents. Those behaviors are not evidence of a reliable process. Stop and verify independently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Decide only after the evidence is in writing
Before signing, assemble one file containing the advisory agreement, Form CRS, Form ADV Part 2, fee schedule, written recommendation, account-opening documents and any product prospectus or contract. Check that the legal entity named in the agreement is the same entity you verified.

- Confirm how either party can terminate the relationship and what happens to prepaid fees.
- Confirm who has custody of assets and where statements will come from.
- Confirm whether the adviser has discretion to trade or withdraw funds and exactly what authorization you are granting.
- Confirm how often you will receive reports and what services are included.
- Write down unresolved questions and do not transfer funds until they are answered.
Do not let a limited-time pitch turn document review into a deadline. A legitimate professional should allow you to read disclosures, compare alternatives and obtain independent advice.

8. Monitor the relationship after hiring
Trust is an ongoing assessment. Reconcile account statements and trade confirmations with what you authorized. Check that fees, trades, withdrawals and holdings match the agreement and the recommendation. Save each version of the agreement, disclosure documents, fee schedule and written advice so you can identify changes.
If the record does not match the discussion, pause new transactions and contact the firm’s compliance channel. Ask for a written explanation. If the issue is not resolved, use the appropriate regulator’s complaint process; Investor.gov and FINRA provide paths for investor questions and complaints. Do not send additional money while you are trying to determine who authorized a transaction or where assets are held.
Red flags and the appropriate response
| Red flag | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The person or firm cannot be found in official records. | You cannot confirm authorization or identify the legal entity. | Do not invest; verify through Investor.gov, IAPD and, where applicable, BrokerCheck. |
| Pressure to act today, keep the opportunity secret or bypass normal paperwork. | Urgency and secrecy prevent independent verification. | Stop, request disclosures and obtain a second opinion. |
| Guaranteed or unusually high returns with little or no risk. | Risk and return are being misrepresented. | Ask for written risk information and independently verify the investment and seller. |
| Vague answers about fees, commissions or third-party payments. | You cannot evaluate the total cost or incentive. | Request a dollar-by-dollar schedule and the recipient of each payment. |
| The adviser refuses to discuss alternatives or product limits. | The recommendation may be constrained by an undisclosed conflict. | Ask what was excluded and why; do not proceed without a clear answer. |
| Marketing claims do not match Form CRS, Form ADV or the agreement. | The promised service may not be part of the relationship. | Ask for correction in writing or choose a different professional. |
| Statements or trades do not match your authorization. | Your account may have an operational or unauthorized-activity problem. | Pause transactions, contact compliance and preserve all records. |
How to compare two advisers without relying on a star rating
There is no universal trust score. Compare the evidence that affects your decision:
| Comparison area | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Registration and history | Current status, jurisdictions, employment history, customer disputes and regulatory events for both the person and firm. |
| Scope of service | Financial planning, investment management, monitoring, account types, minimums and product limitations. |
| Total cost | Advisory, commission, fund, trading, custody, surrender and other costs expressed in dollars where possible. |
| Compensation and conflicts | Who pays the professional, affiliated products, outside compensation and incentives tied to trading or assets. |
| Conduct standard | The standard described in each Form CRS and how it applies to the services you will receive. |
| Relevant experience | Experience with your goals, tax circumstances, liquidity needs and constraints, not merely years in the industry. |
| Recommendation quality | Whether assumptions, risks, alternatives, costs and conditions are explained clearly and supplied in writing. |
| Ongoing accountability | Reporting schedule, access to compliance staff, termination terms and a practical process for correcting errors. |
The stronger candidate is the one whose identity, incentives, limits and reasoning remain clear after you read the official record and documents—not necessarily the one with the most impressive forecast.
What official records can—and cannot—tell you
Investor.gov, IAPD and BrokerCheck can help you verify identity, registration and disclosed history. Form CRS and Form ADV can show services, costs, conflicts, conduct standards and limitations. Together, they give you a factual basis for questions and comparison.
They do not certify that an investment will make money, predict future performance or provide a universal rating of an adviser’s judgment. Your final decision still depends on whether the service fits your objectives, constraints and tolerance for loss, and whether you understand the costs and risks.
The Bottom Line
Verify both the person and firm, read Form CRS and Form ADV Part 2, convert every fee to dollars, question conflicts and credentials, demand a written suitability explanation, and keep checking the account after hiring. If any of those steps cannot be completed, do not invest yet.
