The recovery case is stronger when price holds higher-timeframe trend levels through pullbacks, breaks a prior lower high and forms higher highs and higher lows, while spot-market demand and other evidence broadly support the move. Treat these as checks, not a bottom-calling formula: a bounce can look convincing for a while and still fail.
Start with the trend structure, not the size of the rally
On daily and weekly charts, look for a change in the sequence of swing highs and lows. In a falling market, rallies often stall below earlier highs, leaving a pattern of lower highs. A stronger reversal case develops when Bitcoin clears a meaningful prior lower high, then holds near or above that area on a pullback and goes on to make a higher low. A steep short-term rise that remains below prior resistance can still be a bounce within a broader downtrend.

There is no universal resistance level that marks a recovery. Bitwise Europe’s September 2026 analysis described Bitcoin as remaining within a broader lower-high structure until a cited hurdle was cleared; that level was specific to its dated analysis, not a standing threshold. See Bitwise Europe’s September 2026 analysis for its context.

Moving averages can help frame the trend, but a brief crossing is not confirmation. The 50-day moving average reacts more quickly to price changes; the 200-day average is a slower reference for intermediate-term strength, as described by Nasdaq Dorsey Wright. Look at where price closes relative to these averages and whether it can stay above them during subsequent pullbacks. Weekly closes are useful for judging whether a move has persisted beyond daily volatility.

False starts happen. Fidelity Digital Assets’ Q3 2024 report said Bitcoin crossed above and below its 200-day simple moving average seven times during that quarter, then finished the quarter 10% higher than it began. The example shows why a single reclaim can whipsaw; it does not establish a rule for what will happen after the next crossing. Fidelity Digital Assets’ Q3 2024 Signals Report provides the dated observation.
Binance Research’s September 28, 2026 commentary identified the 50-week moving average as a test for the recovery setup: sustained weekly closes above it would strengthen the case, while a close back below would weaken it. The report’s conclusion is a useful way to frame this kind of level: persistence matters more than a brief move across it. Its discussion and other dated market observations are in Binance Research’s September 28, 2026 report.

Ask whether demand is participating
A price advance is more convincing when it comes with broader market participation. Compare the rally with spot-market activity: a rising price accompanied by weak spot volume deserves more caution than a rise supported by stronger activity. Volume measures can differ by venue and methodology, so interpret them in the context of the source and period rather than as a universal signal.
Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) flows are another demand indicator, but they fluctuate and cannot guarantee that a rally will continue. Binance Research reported that US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded US$999 million of inflows on September 21, 2026, which it described as the largest single-day inflow of that year as of its September 28 report. It also reported that the year-to-date cumulative flow series reached a US$5.69 billion net-outflow trough on July 13 before moving into positive territory later. Those are figures and characterizations from Binance Research’s dated report, not live readings or independently remeasured totals. Schwab, by contrast, described weak spot volume alongside a Bitcoin rebound in its April 29, 2026 monitor, illustrating why price direction alone can give an incomplete picture. Schwab’s April 2026 monitor covers that observation.

Use on-chain cost-basis measures as context
Bitcoin’s realized price estimates the average acquisition price of the circulating supply, based on on-chain movement. It can offer a broad cost-basis reference, but it is not a precise estimate of what every holder paid and does not identify a market bottom.
Glassnode describes a combined regime marker that is active only when spot price is above both realized price and the 200-day simple moving average. That conjunction can add context to the recovery assessment; it is not a timing signal or a guarantee of further gains. Glassnode’s chart description explains the measure.
Rank #4
Include macro conditions and evidence against the recovery case
Bitcoin’s setup can change when wider risk conditions change. Interest-rate expectations and Treasury yields, for example, may affect appetite for risk assets. Binance Research’s September 28, 2026 commentary noted higher Treasury yields as a risk even while discussing improving technical conditions and ETF demand. A bullish chart signal does not cancel out weaker participation, a failed resistance level or a worsening macro backdrop.

When assessing the move, write down both the evidence for and against a recovery:
Best Value
- Against: price remains below a prior lower high; a moving-average reclaim is quickly lost; weekly closes fail to hold; or spot activity and flows do not support the advance.
- For: price clears a prior lower high, forms a higher low, and holds longer-term references through pullbacks, with spot activity and flows providing corroborating evidence.
- Unclear: some indicators improve while others lag. Mixed evidence calls for patience and another period of follow-through, not a forced verdict.
What September 2026’s signals illustrate—and what they do not
Binance Research reported that Bitcoin’s September 20, 2026 weekly close was US$81,159, its first weekly close above the 50-week moving average since November 9, 2025—a gap of 45 weeks. It also reported that the 50-day average crossed above the 200-day average on September 8, after spending 293 days below it. These are dated observations, not current levels or evergreen thresholds.
The report also discussed prior golden crosses whose subsequent peak gains were roughly 100% to 600% within a year. Those were peak gains, not returns from buying and holding, and the sample was small and overlapping, so it should not be treated as a forecast. Binance Research also described a pullback below US$84,000 after a rebound above US$86,000 in its September 28 snapshot; those prices are especially time-sensitive. The report’s figures are best read as examples of how analysts combine trend persistence, participation and risk factors—not as buy or sell instructions.
A practical way to reach a provisional view
- Mark the swing structure: On daily and weekly charts, identify the latest meaningful lower high. Check whether price has broken it and whether a pullback holds above or near the reclaimed area.
- Check trend references: Compare price with the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, and review weekly closes against longer-term levels such as the 50-week average. Look for sustained holds rather than a one-session cross.
- Assess participation: Check whether spot-market activity and ETF flows broadly support the rise. Note the source and observation period because provider definitions and measurement windows can differ.
- Add cost-basis and macro context: See whether price is above realized price as well as relevant trend references, then consider whether rates and wider risk conditions could interrupt the move.
- State what remains uncertain: A recovery case strengthens when several checks align and persist; if the rally is short-lived, structure remains weak or signals conflict, a bounce remains plausible.
“Dead-cat bounce” is often used informally for a temporary rally in a falling market, but there is no established numeric threshold that formally separates it from a recovery. The useful question is what price does next: whether it can break and hold important structure, and whether other evidence continues to support the move.
