You cannot prove that an Etsy recipe or craft pattern was made with AI from one odd image, a writing style, or a detector score. The dependable approach is a risk assessment: read the seller’s AI disclosure, look for an unedited photograph of a real result, compare every image for identity and construction consistency, and test whether the instructions are technically reproducible. Etsy’s current rules matter here: seller-prompted AI creations must be disclosed, while AI-generated functional instructions—including recipes and knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting, and beading patterns—are prohibited. Use the checks below to decide whether a listing appears transparent and usable, or whether you should ask questions, avoid buying, or report a concrete mismatch.
What does an AI-made Etsy recipe or pattern look like?
There is no single visual “AI tell.” A generated-looking hand, an inconsistent stitch, or polished generic prose can result from photography, editing, a prototype, or ordinary human error. Conversely, an AI-assisted listing can look professional. The useful question is not “Can I prove AI?” but “Does this listing provide credible evidence that a person created, tested, and accurately photographed a reproducible product?”

What does Etsy allow, and what does it prohibit?
Etsy permits seller-prompted AI creations when the seller supplies original prompts or inputs, makes creative decisions, and discloses AI use in the listing description. The disclosure should explain the seller’s role rather than simply labeling an item “AI.”

Etsy prohibits bot-generated content and AI-generated functional instructions. Its examples include knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting, and beading patterns, as well as recipes, project plans, manuals, and instructional guides. Etsy’s Creativity Standards require a human role in every item and allow removal of listings that violate those standards.
An Etsy update dated October 22, 2026 says functional-guide information must be the seller’s own work, not generated by AI, and that sellers must show an actual result made using the instructions rather than an AI-generated or simulated result. Etsy is also adding stronger detection and enforcement for misleading AI imagery and a reporting reason for suspected misleading AI images.
These are platform rules, not a guarantee that every compliant listing is good or that every suspicious listing violates policy. A missing disclosure is a reason to investigate, not proof of AI use. Policy compliance and copyright infringement are separate questions.
How should I inspect an Etsy listing before buying?
Use this sequence so that strong evidence receives more weight than a vague impression.
1. Read the disclosure and the seller’s explanation
Look in the description for a direct statement about AI. If AI was used, does the seller say whether it generated concepts, edited an image, helped draft text, or contributed to the design? Does the seller also describe their own prompting, editing, testing, photographing, and revisions?
A specific account is more informative than a generic phrase such as “made with technology.” For example, “AI helped brainstorm color combinations; I wrote, tested, and revised the pattern” tells you what remains the seller’s responsibility. Do not infer that an undisclosed listing used AI merely because the writing is polished or the photos are highly stylized.

2. Look for a real, unedited finished result
Etsy’s image requirements generally call for at least one unedited photograph of the actual item. For craft patterns and recipes, the listing should include at least one real, unedited photo of something made using the product; an AI-generated image cannot be the only finished-result evidence.

For a pattern, inspect close-ups of stitch structure, seams, joins, shaping, and consistent yarn or fabric. A recipe listing should show a dish whose ingredients and method make sense together; useful process views can be more credible than one glossy “hero” shot. A studio-quality photograph is not automatically fake, but a single perfect image with no construction detail is weak provenance.
3. Compare every image for identity consistency
Open each image side by side. Check whether the same object keeps the same shape, colors, materials, texture, facial details, seams, and proportions. For food, compare the plate, pan, garnish, portion, browning, and background. Ask whether a stitch structure vanishes between views, a tool is held in an impossible way, or an object changes form without an explanation such as blocking or a different size.
Document concrete discrepancies. A documented crochet-pattern example examined by Bellingcat showed supposedly identical Highland-cow results differing in color, shape, materials, and small details such as nostril-hole placement. That kind of inconsistency can indicate generated or composited images, but it is not conclusive by itself; it could also reflect multiple prototypes, editing, or poor photography.
How can I tell if an Etsy crochet or knitting pattern is technically real?
Sample-check the instructions before purchase when a preview is available. You are looking for arithmetic and physical coherence, not a particular writing style.
Check stitch and row arithmetic
- Verify the cast-on or starting-chain count and the first repeat.
- Follow increases and decreases through at least one shaping section and calculate the expected final stitch count.
- Compare written directions with chart symbols, row numbers, and color keys.
- Check that a stated gauge, yarn weight, hook or needle size, and finished dimensions are compatible.
Common AI-pattern failures include missing rows, incorrect stitch counts, unworkable shaping, fabric behavior that defies physics, and charts that contradict the written instructions. A preview that cannot be reconciled is a reason to pause and ask the seller for clarification.
Look for tactile and construction details
Instructions should explain joins, turning, seam placement, increases, decreases, finishing, and how pieces are assembled. Look for a plausible order of operations: a sleeve cannot be joined before the required openings exist, and a three-dimensional piece needs shaping that can actually produce the photographed form. Vague directions such as “continue until it looks right” are not a substitute for counts or dimensions when precision is necessary.
Ask whether anyone test-knit or test-crocheted it
Testing means another person worked from the file, found ambiguities, and enabled revisions. Ask how many testers were involved, what changed after testing, and whether the photographed item was made from the current version. The Knitting Guild Association notes that AI cannot replicate the tactile knowledge gained by knitting thousands of stitches, ripping back rows, and refining technique over years; it can only imitate the surface appearance of instructions.

Watch for bulk-upload patterns without provenance
An identity that publishes many designs at once, with no evidence of test-knitting, editing, or a consistent design practice, deserves extra scrutiny. Volume alone is not proof of AI, but it lowers confidence when combined with arithmetic errors, recycled descriptions, or inconsistent photographs.
How do I know an Etsy recipe is reproducible?
Treat the recipe as an instruction set, not as a food photograph. Every quantity, step, and condition should support the stated yield and result.
Reconcile ingredients, yield, and method
- Check that ingredient quantities plausibly produce the stated number of servings.
- Look for units that are clear and internally consistent; unexplained conversions are a warning.
- Confirm that each listed ingredient appears in a method step and that no method step introduces an unexplained ingredient.
- Check that the vessel, temperature, and timing suit the ingredients and the stated portion.
Be wary of missing steps, impossible temperatures, contradictory substitutions, or generic prose that never gives sensory cues such as texture, color, aroma, or doneness. A recipe that says to “cook until perfect” without a practical test leaves too much room for failure.
Ask how the photographed dish was made
Request confirmation that the photo shows food made from the exact file you would receive, not a stock image, a different version, or an AI-generated scene. If the seller lists substitutions, ask which were actually tested and whether they change liquid, fat, leavening, or cooking time. A credible seller can usually describe at least one revision prompted by a real cooking result.

No. Text clues and detector scores are weak signals and should never be treated as authorship proof.
The UK House of Commons Library lists possible indicators of AI-generated text, including fluent but vague language, unsupported assertions, inconsistent detail, errors in dates or names, and sudden shifts in tone. Human sellers can write that way, and edited AI text can avoid those patterns. American spelling, bullet points, a formal tone, or unusually smooth grammar are not evidence on their own.
If you use a detector, treat its output as one low-weight clue in a larger assessment. Do not accuse a seller because a tool assigns a high percentage. Focus instead on observable facts: a chart that conflicts with the written row, a finished object that changes shape between images, or a recipe whose quantities cannot produce its stated yield.

What questions should I ask the seller?
Ask specific, answerable questions before buying or downloading. The quality of the response is itself useful provenance.

This framework distinguishes a possibly AI-assisted listing that is transparent and usable from one that may be misleading or unusable. It does not produce a legal or forensic determination.
What should I do if the listing looks misleading?
Preserve evidence before the listing changes. Save the listing URL, screenshots of every relevant image and description, the downloaded preview or file, and a note identifying the exact mismatch. For a pattern, record the row, count, chart symbol, or finished dimension that fails. For a recipe, record the ingredient, quantity, temperature, timing, or yield conflict.

Use Etsy’s report function for suspected misleading AI imagery or another applicable policy reason. Etsy says its newer AI-image report initially helps it understand perceived misuse and does not automatically trigger enforcement. Describe what you observed rather than making an unsupported accusation: for example, “The listing shows two supposedly identical cows with different nostril placement and body shape,” not simply “This is AI.”
If you bought a file, keep your order record and seller correspondence. A policy report and a request for a refund or other buyer remedy are separate actions; follow the options available through Etsy for your order and region.

What conclusions can I safely draw?
You can often identify a high-risk listing, but you usually cannot prove authorship from public clues alone. Strong confidence comes from several independent signals agreeing: a transparent disclosure, a real unedited result, consistent images, instructions that survive arithmetic and physical checks, and credible evidence of testing.
A missing disclosure, a detector score, or one strange photograph is not enough. If the seller cannot answer focused questions and the product cannot be reconciled technically, the practical decision is to avoid the purchase and report the documented facts.
