To tell whether an AI company’s valuation is supported by revenue, divide its enterprise value—or, for a private financing, its post-money valuation—by a clearly identified revenue measure, then test whether the company’s growth, retention, margins, compute costs and cash needs can sustain that multiple. A high multiple is not proof of overvaluation, and a low one is not proof of a bargain: revenue quality and the cost of earning each dollar matter as much as the headline ratio.
The first practical step is to establish what the numbers actually measure. Audited revenue, annual recurring revenue (ARR), a recent-period run rate and an analyst estimate are not interchangeable. Label the valuation date, revenue period and source before comparing an AI company with another business.

What does a revenue multiple tell you?
A revenue multiple expresses how much investors are paying for each dollar of a company’s revenue. It is a starting point for judging a valuation, not a verdict on whether the company is fairly priced. A multiple becomes informative only when the numerator and denominator are defined consistently and the business’s prospects and costs are considered alongside them.
For a public company, a common measure is enterprise value divided by last-twelve-month revenue: EV ÷ LTM revenue. Enterprise value (EV) is intended to reflect the value of the operating business, taking account of debt and cash as well as equity value. For a private company, an available financing figure may instead be its post-money valuation divided by stated ARR: post-money valuation ÷ stated ARR. That is a useful description of the calculation, but it is not automatically equivalent to EV divided by audited revenue.

Forward revenue, ARR and run rate can also be used, but label them. A forward multiple uses forecast revenue; ARR generally annualizes recurring contract value; a run rate annualizes a recent pace. None should be presented as historical revenue already earned. Houlihan Lokey’s 2025 generative-AI benchmarking snapshot includes both EV/ARR and EV/revenue and notes that ARR is used as a revenue proxy for some private companies.
Write the calculation so someone else can check it
Record the valuation measure, revenue measure, period and date together. For example, write “post-money valuation ÷ company-stated ARR, as of [date]” in your notes, replacing the bracketed text with the actual date. If the company discloses only a run rate, show how it is calculated and keep the label attached. Do not divide a current valuation by a stale revenue period without flagging the mismatch.
That discipline matters especially for private companies. A financing valuation may be reported as a post-money equity value, while a public-market comparison may use enterprise value. Private revenue figures may be estimated, prorated or company-stated rather than audited. A ratio with precise-looking decimals does not remove those differences.
Is the company’s ARR real revenue, or just a run rate?
Check the source and definition before treating any annualized number as revenue. ARR describes recurring annual contract value; a run rate projects a recent pace across a year. Both can help assess momentum, but neither is automatically the same as audited revenue earned during the year.
Separate the main revenue labels
- Reported revenue: revenue recognized for a stated period under the company’s accounting, such as a fiscal year or quarter. Check the period and whether the figure is audited or otherwise reported in company filings.
- ARR: an annualized measure of recurring contract value. It can convey the scale of recurring business, but may not reflect revenue recognized over the same period or how much is collected in cash.
- Run rate: a recent revenue pace multiplied or annualized to suggest a yearly amount. It describes a projection from a recent period, not the revenue the company has already earned over a full year.
- Estimate or proxy: a figure derived by analysts, media or investors rather than directly disclosed as the exact measure being discussed. Identify who produced it and what it represents.
A company can report a fast-growing ARR figure while still having uneven recognized revenue, collection timing or renewal exposure. Conversely, a recent run rate may understate or overstate a full year if sales are seasonal, usage fluctuates or a few large contracts begin or end. The label does not settle whether the business is attractive; it tells you what evidence the number can support.
Do not infer AI revenue from general adoption
If a diversified company does not separately disclose revenue from its AI products, do not turn customer counts, product usage or adoption commentary into an AI-revenue estimate. Use the company’s disclosed total revenue only when that is the measure you intend to analyze, and state that it is total-company revenue rather than AI-specific sales. If an analyst estimate is available, identify it as an estimate instead of presenting it as company-reported fact.

How can you tell whether growth supports the multiple?
Compare growth with the multiple using matching periods, then test whether growth is durable. A high rate of expansion can help support a high valuation, but growth that depends on one-off sales, weak renewals or uneconomic usage may not persist.
Check year-over-year and sequential growth
Year-over-year growth compares a period with the same period a year earlier; sequential growth compares it with the immediately preceding period. Both can be useful, but avoid comparing a quarterly growth rate with a full-year figure as if they were the same measure. For private companies with limited disclosure, note when a comparable period is unavailable rather than filling the gap with a guess.
Fast growth is more persuasive when customers renew, expand their spending and remain active. Examine net retention, churn, customer concentration and, where disclosed, backlog or contracted demand. A large backlog can indicate future contracted work, but it is not the same as revenue already recognized or cash already collected. If one customer accounts for a substantial share of sales, the company’s apparent growth may be more fragile than the headline suggests.
Ask what is producing the growth
- Is new revenue recurring subscription or usage revenue, or is it mostly one-time services and implementation work?
- Are existing customers renewing or expanding, or does the company need a continual stream of new customers to replace departures?
- Does growth come from a broad customer base, or does it depend on a small number of large contracts?
- Is demand supported by contracts or backlog, and what does the company disclose about timing and conversion?
- Does the company disclose AI-specific revenue, or is the figure being discussed a proxy based on total sales or commentary?
These questions help distinguish revenue that is likely to compound from revenue that has arrived quickly but may not recur. They also give context to the multiple: a business with lower growth and concentrated, non-recurring sales may be riskier than a faster-growing company with strong renewals, even if its headline multiple is lower.
What costs should you check for an AI business?
Revenue growth does not show how much investment it takes to deliver the product or how much cash the company retains. For an AI company, examine the cost of inference, hosting and models alongside operating costs, capital expenditures, working capital, debt and funding needs.
Start with margins after compute
Gross margin indicates how much revenue remains after direct costs of delivering the product. For AI services, ask whether the reported margin includes inference, hosting and model costs relevant to serving customers. If those costs are rising with usage, revenue can grow quickly without a corresponding improvement in the economics of each dollar earned.

Look beyond a single margin percentage. Compare its direction over time, the company’s explanation for changes and whether the measure is GAAP or adjusted. Adjusted figures can be useful for isolating operating trends, but reconcile them to GAAP results and include stock-based compensation when considering economic cost and dilution.
Read earnings, cash flow and the balance sheet together
Operating margin, operating cash flow and capital expenditure answer different questions. Operating margin reflects operating profitability under the reported accounting; operating cash flow shows cash generated or used in operations; capex captures investment in long-lived assets. Working capital, leases, debt maturities and funding runway help explain whether the company can meet its commitments and finance its plans.
The 2026 comparison framework from iTechGuides recommends reading the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement and footnotes together. That matters because a strong revenue number alone cannot reveal cash collection timing, capital commitments, debt obligations or the amount of investment required to keep growing.
Measure the compute commitment
For infrastructure-heavy businesses, ask how much compute capacity must be bought or reserved before customer cash arrives. Capacity commitments and infrastructure investment can support future growth, but they can also make the business capital-intensive and increase the cost of a slower-than-expected demand ramp. Compare the expected customer revenue with the costs and timing of those commitments where the company discloses them.
A company can also be exposed to compute costs through its suppliers rather than through owned infrastructure. In either case, the relevant question is whether the cost of serving additional usage leaves room for attractive margins and cash generation. If the company does not disclose enough detail to answer that, treat unit economics as uncertain rather than assuming that more usage automatically improves profitability.
Which AI companies make fair valuation comparables?
Choose peers with similar business models, exposure and maturity. A foundation-model provider, an AI infrastructure company, a vertical application, a cloud platform and a diversified technology company can have very different revenue quality, capital needs and risk; placing them in one undifferentiated peer group can make a comparison misleading.

Houlihan Lokey’s 2025 snapshot identifies several useful measures for generative-AI benchmarking: revenue, ARR, average revenue per user (ARPU), monthly active users (MAU), prompts per user, ARR per employee (ARR/FTE), gross margin, burn, capex, EV/ARR, EV/revenue and EV/MAU. These measures illuminate different aspects of a business. A usage or user metric can help describe adoption, but it does not replace revenue, margin or cash-flow evidence.
Published benchmarks are context, not a fair-value rule
| Benchmark | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud 100 cohort, 2025 | 20× average ARR multiple | Bessemer Venture Partners reports this cohort average was 41% below the 2023 peak. It is context for that cohort, not a universal threshold. |
| AI companies in the Cloud 100 cohort, 2025 | 24× average ARR multiple | Bessemer Venture Partners reports the AI-company cohort averaged this multiple; the figure does not establish what any individual company should be worth. |
| Non-AI companies in the Cloud 100 cohort, 2025 | 19× average ARR multiple | Bessemer Venture Partners reports this peer-group average. Differences in company mix and economics limit direct application to a specific business. |
| Perplexity, Houlihan Lokey 2025 snapshot | 120× implied ARR multiple | Illustrative private-company figure based on estimated data and a post-money valuation proxy; not a universal fair value or a directly audited market multiple. |
| OpenAI, Houlihan Lokey 2025 snapshot | 41.67× implied ARR multiple | Illustrative private-company figure based on estimated data and a post-money valuation proxy; its inputs and date should not be treated as current audited figures. |
The cohort averages show why a single sector multiple is not enough: even within a defined group, AI and non-AI companies had different averages in 2025. The private-company illustrations are a different kind of evidence again, using estimated data and post-money valuation proxies. Do not compare them as if all figures were measured on the same basis.
Make the peer comparison like-for-like
- Use the same valuation concept: EV with EV, or clearly labeled post-money values with comparable post-money values.
- Use the same revenue definition and fiscal period; do not put ARR beside audited LTM revenue without labeling the difference.
- Use valuation figures from identifiable dates. Public-market multiples move with share prices, so dated comparisons can become stale.
- Match business models and AI exposure as closely as the available evidence allows.
- Compare growth, margins, cash flow, capex, retention, customer concentration and compute intensity alongside revenue multiples.
A lower multiple does not automatically mean a company is cheaper in an economically meaningful sense. It may reflect slower growth, weaker retention, lower margins, higher capital intensity or greater risk. A higher multiple may be more defensible when revenue is growing rapidly and repeatably with durable customer relationships and credible economics—but no one benchmark proves that the valuation is fair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does OpenAI’s reported ARR illustrate?
OpenAI’s 2026 company article reports ARR of $2 billion in 2023, $6 billion in 2024 and more than $20 billion in 2025. These are company-stated ARR figures, not independently audited historical revenue, so they should be labeled as ARR and attributed to the company rather than described as audited sales.

| Year | OpenAI figure as reported in its 2026 company article | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | $2 billion ARR | Company-stated ARR, not independently audited historical revenue. |
| 2024 | $6 billion ARR | Company-stated ARR, not independently audited historical revenue. |
| 2025 | More than $20 billion ARR | Company-stated ARR, not independently audited historical revenue. |
The same article says compute grew from 0.2 gigawatts in 2023 to about 1.9 gigawatts in 2025, and states: “Adoption drives revenue, and revenue funds the next wave of compute and innovation.” Those statements illustrate the relationship an investor should investigate: expanding adoption can support revenue, while serving that demand may require substantial compute capacity. The figures do not, by themselves, establish the company’s gross margin, cash generation or the valuation multiple that would be justified.
Use the example as a reminder to keep measures distinct. ARR growth can indicate momentum, but a valuation assessment still needs a dated numerator and a consistently defined denominator, along with evidence about renewals, delivery costs, cash needs and the quality of the reported number.

How can you test whether the valuation depends on future promises?
Separate the value supported by current or near-term revenue from option value tied to future products, market expansion or technical breakthroughs. A valuation may reasonably include expectations about future opportunities, but those expectations should be explicit rather than presented as if current revenue already proves them.
Work backward from the valuation
- Set the valuation and date. Use EV or a clearly labeled private-round post-money valuation, and record when it applies.
- Select a revenue measure. Choose LTM revenue, forward revenue, ARR or run rate, identify its source and period, and avoid presenting an estimate as reported revenue.
- Calculate the multiple. Show the division and label it, such as EV/LTM revenue or post-money valuation/stated ARR.
- Check the business evidence. Review growth, retention, churn, customer concentration, margins after AI delivery costs, operating cash flow, capex and capital commitments.
- State what must go right. Identify the growth, margin and cash-flow assumptions needed for the valuation to make sense, and which future opportunities are not yet supported by current revenue.
Run downside cases, not just the expected case
Test what happens if growth slows, inference costs rise, customers churn or the company needs additional financing. A valuation that only works under rapid growth and improving margins has more execution risk than one that remains plausible under less favorable assumptions. The goal is not to predict a precise future price; it is to identify which assumptions carry the valuation and what evidence would weaken them.

Private valuations and ARR may be estimated, prorated, company-stated or derived from post-money valuation rather than audited EV. Public-market multiples can change with share prices. The cited benchmarks do not establish a universal fair multiple or guarantee an investment outcome.
What should an investor conclude from the multiple?
Treat the multiple as a screening tool that organizes the next questions, not as a standalone buy-or-avoid signal. A high figure can be supported when durable revenue compounds quickly and the cost of serving customers leaves a credible path to margins and cash generation. A low figure can still conceal weak revenue quality, concentrated customers, heavy compute commitments or significant financing risk.
Before relying on a comparison, be able to state the numerator, denominator, period, date and source in one line. Then explain why the company’s growth, retention, delivery economics and capital needs do—or do not—support paying that amount for each dollar of revenue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ARR audited?
Not necessarily. ARR is an annualized recurring-contract measure, and the company’s reporting and assurance practices determine what independent verification is available. Look for a clear definition and reconciliation to reported revenue rather than assuming the label means audited sales.

How often should I update an AI company’s revenue multiple?
Recalculate it when the valuation or the relevant revenue period changes, and date each version. For public companies, share-price movements can change enterprise value even between financial reports; for private companies, a new financing or updated revenue disclosure may change the available inputs.
What does ARR per employee tell me?
ARR/FTE relates annual recurring revenue to full-time-equivalent headcount and can offer a rough view of revenue scale relative to staffing. It does not measure profit, cash productivity or compute efficiency on its own, so compare it only across businesses with reasonably similar models and definitions.
Why can EV/MAU be misleading for an AI company?
Monthly active users measure activity, not necessarily paying customers or recurring revenue. Users can differ greatly in usage, conversion and cost to serve, so EV/MAU is best treated as an adoption context metric rather than evidence that the valuation is supported by sales.
