Before you authorize a UPI payment, check the payee name or UPI ID and the amount shown on your app. Compare both with the person, shop, invoice or order you intended to pay. A merchant QR can carry merchant information, but a displayed name or QR code is not proof that the request is genuine. If anything is unclear, stop and confirm with the recipient through a trusted channel. Never enter your UPI PIN to receive money.
The short answer: inspect the payee details, not just the QR code
UPI payments fall into two broad relationships. A person-to-person (P2P) payment sends money from one individual to another. A person-to-merchant (P2M) payment sends money from an individual to a business or other merchant. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) uses these definitions, but the payment screen in your particular app may not display a prominent “P2P” or “P2M” label.

- the UPI ID (also called a virtual payment address or VPA), when shown;
- the amount, including any amount pre-filled from a QR code; and
- the context in which you received the payment request.
These details help you decide whether the payment is addressed to the intended shop or person. They do not, by themselves, prove that a merchant is legitimate. A scammer can present a plausible name or a copied QR code, while a genuine small shop may use an account whose displayed name sounds like an individual.

P2P and P2M: what the categories actually mean
| Feature | P2P payment | P2M payment |
|---|---|---|
| Relationship | One person pays another person | A person pays a merchant or business |
| Typical example | Sending your share of rent to a friend | Paying a shop, restaurant, clinic or online seller |
| What to match | The recipient’s name or UPI ID and the agreed amount | The business or authorized operator, the purchase amount and the order or bill |
| What a QR may contain | A personal UPI ID, sometimes with no fixed amount | Merchant information, including a merchant UPI ID and, in some cases, a fixed amount |
| Can the category alone prove safety? | No | No |
NPCI’s August 2025 ecosystem statistics recorded 7,303.15 million P2P transactions and 12,705.16 million P2M transactions in that month. Those figures show that both categories are large parts of UPI, but they cannot identify the recipient of your individual payment.
What a merchant QR can—and cannot—tell you
NPCI says merchant information, including a merchant UPI ID and amount, is stored in a merchant QR. After you scan it, the payment page should show the merchant information resolved by your app. That makes a QR useful for reducing typing errors and, where an amount is encoded, for presenting the bill total.
A QR code is still only an address supplied to your app. It is not a guarantee that the sticker belongs to the shop, that the account is currently controlled by the shop, or that the request is honest. Someone can replace a printed code, send a different code in a message, or ask you to pay an unrelated account.

Step-by-step: check a payment before entering your PIN
- Start from the intended transaction. Keep the invoice, order page, chat, bill or the recipient’s known contact details in view. Do not rely on a QR code or payment request that arrives without context.
- Scan the QR or enter the UPI ID. Use the payment option in your bank or UPI app. Avoid copying an address from an untrusted message if you can obtain it from the merchant’s established counter, website or known contact.
- Wait for the payee information to resolve. Read the full name and UPI ID your app displays. Do not authorize a payment while the screen still shows an unresolved, partial or unexpected recipient.
- Match the name or ID. For a friend or family member, compare it with the identity you normally use for that person. For a shop, compare it with the business name on the counter, invoice, order confirmation or other trusted record. A personal-sounding name requires confirmation; it is neither automatic proof of fraud nor automatic proof of safety.
- Match the amount. Check the numeric amount against the bill or the amount you agreed to send. Look for an extra zero, a decimal error, a duplicated charge or a QR that has inserted an amount you did not expect.
- Check the context. Ask whether this is a normal purchase, a transfer to someone you know, a collect request or a refund-related message. An urgent request, a request to pay a different account, or a sudden change in payment details is a reason to pause.
- Confirm through a trusted channel if anything differs. Call the merchant using a number you already have, ask the cashier to read the authorized UPI ID, or contact the person through your usual conversation. Do not use a phone number or link supplied only in the suspicious request.
- Authorize only after the checks pass. Enter your UPI PIN on the official payment screen. The PIN authorizes an outgoing payment; it is not needed to receive money.
App labels and layouts change, so these steps deliberately rely on the payee details your app shows rather than promising a universal “merchant” badge.
How to interpret the name you see
A business name appears
A recognizable business name is consistent with a merchant payment, especially when the UPI ID and amount also match your bill. Still verify the amount and the physical or digital transaction. A familiar name can be copied or displayed by an account that is not the business you contacted.
An individual’s name appears at a shop
Small businesses may accept payments through an owner’s or employee’s account, and the displayed account-holder name can therefore look personal. Do not guess. Ask the merchant to confirm that the account is authorized for that outlet and that the UPI ID on your screen is the one they expect. If the staff cannot explain the mismatch, do not pay until you can verify the recipient independently.
The name is abbreviated, unfamiliar or different from the signboard
Names can differ because of a registered legal name, a proprietor’s name, an acquiring-bank record or an abbreviated display field. That possibility is not a reason to ignore a mismatch. Compare the UPI ID, invoice and amount, then obtain confirmation from the merchant through a trusted channel. If confirmation is unavailable, leave the payment pending rather than entering the PIN.

No name or UPI ID is visible
Do not proceed on the basis of a QR image alone. Return to the app’s payment details, allow the address to resolve, or ask the recipient for a verifiable UPI ID. If the app cannot show who will receive the money, you cannot perform the basic beneficiary check recommended by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
A practical decision framework for a shop payment
| What your app shows | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Business name and UPI ID match the bill; amount matches | Proceed only after checking the payment context and then enter the PIN | The key recipient and amount checks are consistent |
| Personal name, but the shop says it is an authorized account | Ask the shop to confirm the exact UPI ID and account-holder name; pay only if independently satisfied | A personal-looking account can be used by a small merchant, but the name alone does not establish that relationship |
| Name or UPI ID differs from the invoice or cashier’s instruction | Stop and verify through a known contact or another staff member; do not enter the PIN while unresolved | The payment may be misdirected or the payment details may have been changed |
| Amount is different from the bill | Cancel or edit the payment and obtain a corrected request | An incorrect amount is a separate risk even when the payee is genuine |
| QR arrives in an unexpected message with urgency | Ignore the supplied code until you confirm the request through an established channel | Unexpected urgency and a new payment address are common warning signs |
Why a displayed name is not proof of legitimacy
RBI consumer guidance says a payer can check and confirm the account-holder name before making a payment. That check answers “which account name is being addressed?” It does not answer “is this person acting for the shop?” or “is this request genuine?”
Merchant onboarding and VPA-resolution processes help payment providers associate verified information with an account, but they do not give a consumer a universal visual test for authenticity. A genuine merchant can have a legal or proprietor name that differs from its brand, and a fraudulent request can present a convincing name. The reliable approach is to combine the displayed identity with the amount, the transaction context and confirmation from a trusted source.

Collect requests, refunds and the PIN rule
RBI’s Financial Awareness Messages advise users to review a merchant’s or person’s collect request before accepting it and to recheck the beneficiary and amount before transferring funds. A collect request is still a request for you to authorize a payment; it is not evidence that money is coming to you.

NPCI’s fraud-awareness guidance is explicit: scanning a QR code and entering a UPI PIN is for making payments, not receiving them. You do not need to enter your PIN to accept a refund, receive a prize, unlock a payment or get money from another person. If someone says a PIN is required to receive funds, stop the interaction.

You are paying a street vendor or small local shop
Ask the seller to point to the authorized QR and say the expected payee name or UPI ID aloud. Scan the code, compare the resolved details and amount with the purchase, and ask about any personal name before authorizing. Keep your own app screen visible rather than handing your unlocked phone to someone else.
You are paying an online order
Compare the resolved payee with the seller’s order confirmation and the amount due. A message that asks you to switch to a new UPI ID, pay a “verification” amount or act immediately should be verified through the seller’s established support route. Do not assume that a logo or copied payment page proves who receives the funds.
You are sending money to a friend
Use the contact and UPI ID you have previously verified. Read the resolved name and amount before sending, especially when the request arrives after a phone-number change or from a new chat account. Confirm unusual requests by voice or another known channel.

You are paying a recurring service or subscription
Check whether the request is a one-time payment or a recurring mandate and verify the merchant identity and amount shown in the authorization screen. Do not approve a new request merely because the service name looks familiar.
If you discover a problem before authorization
Use the app’s cancel, back or decline control and do not enter the PIN. Save a screenshot only if it does not expose your PIN, full account credentials or other sensitive information. Contact the intended recipient through a trusted channel and request a corrected payment address. If the request appears fraudulent, report it in the app and to your bank, and preserve the message, QR image, UPI ID, time and amount for the complaint.
If the payment was completed to the wrong recipient
Act promptly. NPCI says a UPI payment cannot be stopped once it has been initiated. Contact your bank and the UPI app with the transaction ID, date, amount, payee details and a clear description of what happened. Raise a complaint through the participating UPI app where available; NPCI’s complaint guidance directs fraud or unauthorized-transaction complaints to the user’s bank.

Do not promise yourself that an incorrectly addressed transfer will automatically be reversed. Recovery depends on the circumstances, the recipient and the participating institutions. Keep the complaint reference numbers and follow the bank’s escalation process if you do not receive a timely response.
Wrong recipient versus failed payment
These are different problems and should be reported accurately.
- Wrong recipient: your account was debited and the money was sent to an account you did not intend to pay. Report the unexpected recipient and provide the transaction details.
- Failed funds transfer: your account may have been debited but the intended beneficiary was not credited. RBI’s failed-payment framework treats this as a transfer event with its own resolution rules.
- Failed merchant confirmation: your account was debited, but confirmation did not reach the merchant’s location or system. This is distinct from paying the wrong account and may follow a different remedy path.
Save the exact status displayed by your app. Telling the bank whether the issue is an incorrect beneficiary, a beneficiary-not-credited transfer or a merchant-confirmation failure helps it route the complaint correctly.
A reusable pre-payment checklist
- Is this a payment I expected to make?
- Does the resolved payee name match the intended person or authorized business?
- Does the UPI ID match the invoice, prior record or recipient confirmation?
- Does the amount match the bill or agreed transfer?
- Was the QR or collect request obtained through a trusted channel?
- Have I verified any mismatch instead of guessing?
- Am I being asked for a PIN to receive money? If so, stop.
- Have I checked the final details immediately before authorization?
If any answer is uncertain, leave the transaction unapproved until you can verify it. The safest decision is often to pause, not to classify the payment from the name alone.
