How to Tell Whether a Crypto Investment Website Is Legitimate Before Depositing Money

Do not deposit until you can independently verify the operator, its regulatory permission, the exact product, custody arrangements, fees, withdrawal rules and contact details. A polished design, HTTPS padlock or matching registration number is not proof. If the site guarantees profits, creates urgency, arrived unsolicited, asks for an advance payment or cannot explain how withdrawals work, stop.

Use a stop-or-proceed decision before sending money

Treat a crypto investment site as unverified until you have checked the legal entity behind it and matched that entity to an official regulator record. Proceed only when the identity, jurisdiction, permitted activities, domain, address, product terms and withdrawal process all line up. One unresolved contradiction is enough to pause; you do not owe a salesperson a deposit while you investigate.

Check What a satisfactory result looks like What should stop the deposit
Legal identity A full legal name, registration number, named principals, physical address and support contacts that match independent records. Only a brand name, a virtual office, missing principals, copied details or a different entity in the terms.
Regulatory status The exact entity appears in the relevant official register and the listed permissions cover the activity being offered. No record, a look-alike record, an expired status or permission for a different activity.
Product and custody Plain-language explanation of what you buy, who holds assets, how trades or mining supposedly work, all fees and material risks. Vague proprietary systems, unexplained yield, hidden counterparties or no loss scenario.
Withdrawals Written rules show timing, minimums, lock-ups, fees and the process for closing an account. A tax, release, upgrade or verification payment is required before you can withdraw.
Sales conduct No guarantees, pressure, unsolicited approach or dependence on celebrity testimonials. Promises such as 20–50% returns with little or no risk, countdowns, limited spaces or instructions to act immediately.

Why the checks matter

Investment fraud is expensive even when a site looks professional. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission reported $4.6 billion in consumer-reported investment-scam losses in 2023 in a 2024 consumer alert. In the Financial Conduct Authority’s 2025 cryptoasset consumer research, 40% of respondents said they had encountered fake websites or phishing attempts impersonating legitimate exchanges or wallets, 34% had encountered investment schemes promising high returns, and 87% of cryptoasset users who personally experienced a crime, scam or fraud reported losing money.

Crypto transfers are often difficult to reverse. A convincing dashboard can display invented balances, fabricated profits and fake transaction histories while the operator controls the only real wallet. Your goal is therefore not to prove that a site looks trustworthy; it is to establish who controls it, what it is legally allowed to do, where your assets go and whether you can leave without paying an unexpected charge.

Run this 10-step legitimacy check

1. Record the legal entity, not just the brand

Copy the company’s complete legal name exactly as shown in its terms, privacy notice, footer and account-opening documents. Record its incorporation or registration number, jurisdiction, directors or principals, street address, telephone number, support email and every domain used for login and payments. Save screenshots and the date you checked them.

A brand can be copied, sold or used by an unrelated company. Compare the legal entity in the site’s documents with corporate records and regulator entries. A mismatch between the entity accepting your money and the entity described in advertising is a stop signal. Do not assume that a familiar logo, a professional support chat or a registration number proves the parties are connected.

2. Search the correct official regulator register

Use the regulator’s own database, reached by typing its address yourself or using a trusted bookmark. For readers in the United Kingdom, search the Financial Conduct Authority’s Financial Services Register. Confirm that the exact legal entity appears and read the permissions, restrictions and dates; a listing for payments or another financial service does not automatically authorize crypto investments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For readers in the United States, start with Investor.gov and then check the applicable Securities and Exchange Commission, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, National Futures Association or state databases. The relevant register depends on the product and the firm’s activities. Other jurisdictions have their own official registers, and a firm authorized in one country may not be permitted to solicit residents of another.

Search by legal name, registration number and address. Try common misspellings only as a way to detect impersonation, not as proof of identity. Save the register result and compare every contact detail. The FCA specifically advises matching the details in its register with those supplied by the firm.

3. Match the register’s contact details to the website

Call or email using the contact information in the independent register, not a number supplied by a social-media message or an unexpected caller. Ask whether the listed entity operates the exact domain you are considering and whether the proposed service is within its permission. Do not let a person on the site select the evidence you are allowed to see.

Fraudsters can copy a genuine registration number, use a near-identical company name or create a look-alike domain. A database match confirms that a regulator recognizes an entity or permission; it does not prove that the site in front of you belongs to that entity.

4. Check the domain age and claimed headquarters

Use a reputable domain-registration lookup to see when the domain was created and who, if anything, is publicly listed. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission recommends checking whether the domain’s age fits the company’s claimed history and using a street-level map check on the stated headquarters.

A newly created domain paired with claims of decades of operation deserves an explanation from an independently verified contact. A residential address is not automatically fraudulent, but a vacant lot, mail-forwarding location or address that belongs to an unrelated business is material evidence against the claim. Check every login, support and payment domain; scammers may place a genuine-looking homepage on one domain and send withdrawal instructions from another.

5. Understand exactly what is being sold

Ask for a plain-language description before transferring funds. You should be able to explain whether you are buying a token, trading on a platform, lending assets, entering a managed account, joining a mining arrangement or purchasing a derivative. Identify the counterparty, the source of any advertised return, the assets held, the pricing method and the events that could produce a loss.

Require a complete fee schedule: trading spreads, commissions, deposit and withdrawal charges, network fees, management fees, performance fees, conversion costs and inactivity charges. The CFTC advises investors to understand what they are being sold, including risks, costs and fees. If the explanation depends on unexplained artificial-intelligence signals, a secret algorithm, “guaranteed” mining capacity or jargon that prevents an ordinary customer from checking the claim, do not fund it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Identify custody and control of the assets

Find out whether you receive control of the private keys, whether a regulated custodian holds the assets, or whether the site merely records an internal balance. Read the custody agreement for segregation, rehypothecation, lending, insurance and insolvency provisions. “Your balance” on a web page is not evidence that coins exist on-chain or are reserved for you.

Ask which blockchain addresses receive deposits and whether withdrawals are sent from addresses controlled by the named legal entity. Never send crypto to a salesperson’s personal wallet, a wallet supplied in an unsolicited message or a QR code whose destination you have not independently verified.

7. Read withdrawal rules before funding

Locate the withdrawal policy, minimum amount, processing time, lock-up period, identity checks, network choices and all charges. Determine whether the firm can change the rules after you deposit and what happens if the account is closed. Test the support channel with a specific written question and keep the response.

A legitimate provider may require identity verification under applicable law, but it should explain the requirement in its published terms. A demand for an additional tax, release fee, insurance payment, upgrade or “verification deposit” before releasing your own money is a classic advance-fee warning. Paying once rarely ends the demand; it often produces another invented obstacle.

8. Search independently for complaints and enforcement

Search the exact legal name, domain and token name with the words review, scam, fraud and complaint. Check several independent results and the dates. Search regulator warnings, court records and reputable consumer-protection reporting rather than relying on the site’s testimonials, newsletters or a person who contacted you first.

Do not treat a clean search as proof of safety: a new site may have no history, and criminals can flood search results with fabricated praise. Give more weight to consistent, specific reports describing deposits, withdrawal attempts, wallet addresses and communications than to anonymous star ratings.

9. Reject guarantees, urgency and unsolicited approaches

Legitimate investments can lose value. The FTC states: “Only scammers will guarantee profits or promise big payouts with guaranteed returns.” Promises of 20–50% returns with little or no risk, a “risk-free” account, a guaranteed daily yield or a claim that losses are impossible are reasons to stop.

Pressure is another reason to stop. The Federal Trade Commission says scammers create urgency so consumers cannot research; examples include limited spaces, expiring special deals and instructions to act immediately. Treat unexpected social-media messages, dating-app contacts, calls, encrypted-chat invitations and fake experts as high-risk entry points. End the conversation and navigate to any provider’s known official site yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Pause for an independent second opinion

Show the legal documents, regulator result, withdrawal policy and payment instructions to someone who has no financial stake in the transaction. Ask that person to challenge the identity, permissions, custody and fee assumptions. If key facts cannot be verified without trusting the salesperson, do not deposit.

Red flags regulators repeatedly describe

Guaranteed or outsized returns

High returns are not proof of fraud by themselves, but a high return paired with little risk, a fixed schedule or a guarantee is a classic signal. The SEC and CFTC specifically warn about promises such as 20–50% returns with little or no risk. Ask what market event could make the strategy lose money; an answer that says it cannot happen is not credible.

Pressure and manufactured scarcity

Countdown clocks, “last allocation” messages, limited spaces and requests to deposit before a stated deadline are designed to replace investigation with emotion. A real investment opportunity can wait while you verify its operator and terms.

Unsolicited contact and fake experts

Scams commonly begin with a social-media message, dating-app relationship, unexpected call or an adviser who claims to have an exclusive allocation. A person’s apparent credentials, profile history or friendly conversation does not establish that a firm is real. Verify through independently sourced contact details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opaque explanations and confusing language

Unexplained proprietary systems, vague mining claims, confusing grammar and diagrams that never identify counterparties make independent verification impossible. Ask for a written explanation of the strategy, risks, fees and custody. If the answer adds jargon instead of facts, stop.

Fake social proof

Testimonials, celebrity endorsements, screenshots of balances and photographs of supposed customers can be fabricated or used without permission. Treat social proof as advertising, not evidence. Verify the legal entity and regulator status separately.

Withdrawal obstruction

Some fake sites show rising balances but block every withdrawal, then demand taxes, release charges, security deposits or account upgrades. This pattern is an advance-fee scam. Do not pay to unlock a balance that has not been independently verified.

Impersonation and look-alike sites

Criminals copy a real company’s colors, logo, regulator name or customer-support script. Check the domain character by character, avoid links and QR codes in unsolicited messages, and use a bookmark you created after independently finding the provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Offshore or mismatched identity

An offshore structure is not automatically illegal, but an offshore entity combined with a different advertised headquarters, unverified principals or no local complaint route makes enforcement and recovery harder. The entity accepting your money, the jurisdiction in its terms and the location claimed in marketing should agree.

What registration proves—and what it does not

A regulator database match can show that an agency recognizes a firm or a permission. It does not prove that the website you found is the same entity, that the firm is solvent, that customer assets are safe, or that every product on the site is authorized. The CFTC and SEC warn: “Relying on registration alone won’t protect you from fraud, but most scams involve unregistered entities, people, and products.”

For UK readers, the FCA says that if you cannot find a firm on the Financial Services Register, it is unlikely to have permission to offer crypto products and you should avoid using it. The FCA also warns that registration does not automatically provide Financial Services Compensation Scheme or Financial Ombudsman protection. Read the register’s permissions and limitations rather than treating the listing as an endorsement.

The SEC advises that when you see an offering on the internet—on a company website, online newsletter, message board or chat room—you should assume it is a scam until you have done your homework and proven otherwise. That is a screening standard, not a claim that every unregistered website is fraudulent or every registered firm is safe.

Compare two legitimate-looking sites without relying on appearances

If two platforms survive the initial checks, compare them using the same documents and questions. Record the date because permissions, fees and domains can change.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Prefer the option that
Legal entity and jurisdiction Who signs the contract and where can you complain or sue? Names one verifiable entity with a consistent address and clear jurisdiction.
Regulator and activities Which register lists it, and does the permission cover this exact service? Shows current permission without implying that registration is a guarantee.
Custody Who controls private keys, and what happens if the provider fails? Explains segregation, access, insolvency treatment and on-chain withdrawal.
Withdrawal controls What are the timing, minimums, lock-ups and all conditions? Publishes predictable rules and does not require an extra payment to release funds.
Fees What are trading, spread, network, management, performance and conversion charges? Provides a complete schedule before account opening.
Risk disclosure Can the provider describe realistic loss scenarios? States that losses are possible and explains leverage, volatility and counterparty risk.
Identity consistency Do the domain, email, phone, address and principals match independent records? Has no unexplained mismatch or look-alike domain.
Sales conduct Were you contacted unexpectedly, pressured or promised guaranteed returns? Lets you investigate without urgency, guarantees or advance-fee demands.

How to handle the payment step safely

Use the smallest amount you can afford to lose only after the identity and withdrawal checks are complete; a small test does not make an unverified operator safe. Confirm the destination address through a trusted, independently opened channel and compare it character by character before approving a transaction. Never share a seed phrase, private key, one-time authentication code or remote-access session.

Do not follow an unexpected link or QR code to log in. Type the known domain yourself, inspect the browser address and verify that any support email uses the same domain as the independently confirmed operator. Be wary of requests to convert money through gift cards, cash couriers, personal bank accounts or a wallet belonging to an employee.

If you already sent money

  1. Stop communication and payments. Do not pay a second fee to release funds or recover supposed profits. Block the sender after preserving evidence.
  2. Preserve evidence. Save the URL, wallet addresses, transaction hashes, emails, chat logs, invoices, screenshots, phone numbers and bank or card records. Record dates and the exact wording of demands.
  3. Contact the payment provider immediately. Ask your bank, card issuer or exchange what recall, freeze or fraud-review options exist. Crypto transfers may be irreversible, but speed can matter for funds that have not yet moved through additional addresses.
  4. Secure remaining accounts. Change reused passwords, revoke suspicious wallet approvals, move unaffected assets to a wallet you control and enable multifactor authentication. Never give a supposed recovery agent your seed phrase.
  5. Report the conduct. U.S. victims can report to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, the Securities and Exchange Commission at sec.gov/tcr and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission at cftc.gov/complaint. UK victims should report to the Financial Conduct Authority and Report Fraud. Include transaction hashes and the legal and domain names you recorded.

A report cannot guarantee recovery, but it can help investigators connect the same wallet, domain or impersonated firm to other victims. Be skeptical of anyone who contacts you afterward claiming they can recover your crypto for an upfront fee; recovery-fee requests are a common second scam.
