Do not fund a hardware wallet until you have verified the seller, inspected the package, completed the manufacturer’s authenticity checks, and generated a new recovery backup on the device. A torn seal, missing accessory, prewritten recovery phrase, supplied PIN, or authenticity warning is a reason to stop. Packaging and holograms are useful warning signals, but they cannot prove that nobody opened a genuine device or added a hidden component.
Why tamper checks matter
A hardware wallet is designed to protect the private keys that control your cryptocurrency. The recovery phrase created during setup is the ultimate backup; anyone who obtains it can generally recreate the wallet elsewhere. That makes a tampered device a financial-security problem, not merely a disappointing unboxing experience.

On October 15, 2026, Ledger reported that criminals had bought genuine devices, opened them, installed hidden components intended to capture recovery phrases during setup, and returned the devices to distribution. Ledger reiterated that returned units must never be resold. The incident shows why an intact-looking box or a genuine secure element cannot, by itself, establish a device’s complete physical history.

The decision sequence: stop before money is at risk
- Verify the seller. Buy from the manufacturer, its official marketplace storefront, or a reseller listed in the manufacturer’s current regional directory. Check the exact marketplace operator, not just the product listing or the name of a large marketplace.
- Record the condition before opening. Photograph every side of the shipping box, retail box, seals, labels and serial information. Keep the receipt, order page, seller name and delivery records.
- Inspect the package and contents. Look for lifted, torn, duplicated or misaligned seals; replacement shrink-wrap; glue residue; inconsistent printing; missing accessories; and signs that the device was handled.
- Check the setup state. A legitimate wallet generates its recovery phrase on the device. Reject a unit that includes a written phrase, supplied PIN, existing accounts or other evidence that somebody completed setup.
- Use only official software. Download Trezor Suite or Ledger Wallet from the manufacturer’s official domain or the corresponding official app store listing. Do not use a link supplied by a seller, message, QR code or included card unless you independently verify it.
- Complete the authenticity check. Follow the model-specific firmware, signature, secure-element and device-attestation prompts. A warning or failed check means stop.
- Escalate before connecting funds. Disconnect a suspicious device, preserve your evidence and contact official support. Do not send a recovery phrase with a return or support request.
1. Verify where the wallet came from
Use an authorized channel
Trezor says a purchase from an unauthorized third party cannot be trusted because the seller’s prior access is unknowable. Ledger likewise recommends buying through official or authorized channels. A discounted price, a “new” description or a high seller rating does not establish provenance.
Before paying, open the manufacturer’s current regional reseller directory and compare the exact legal or marketplace seller name. Be cautious when a marketplace listing is fulfilled by a different company than the one shown as the seller. Save a screenshot or PDF of the listing and authorization information because listings and seller identities can change after delivery.
Why provenance comes before the seal
A seal can be replaced, and a genuine product can be opened and returned to a distribution channel. Starting with a trusted seller reduces the number of unknown hands that may have handled the device. It also gives you a clearer support and return path if the package is questionable.

Physical signs that deserve a pause
- Torn, lifted or cut seals: A seal that is partly detached, wrinkled, pierced or replaced is evidence of handling. Do not assume a small defect is harmless.
- Duplicated or misaligned labels: A second sticker, a seal placed over residue, or artwork that does not line up with the box can indicate resealing.
- Replacement shrink-wrap: Film with a different texture, loose edges, new seams, trapped dust or heat marks may have been applied after opening.
- Adhesive or solvent residue: Glue, glossy patches, scraped cardboard or a strong chemical smell around a seam is inconsistent with a clean factory package.
- Mismatched printing: Compare fonts, colors, logos, language, regulatory marks and serial labels across the box. A single panel that looks newly printed or lower quality is a reason to stop.
- Missing or substituted contents: Check cables, cards, leaflets, protective inserts and any model-specific accessories against the manufacturer’s contents list.
- Handling inside the box: Scratches, fingerprints, dust in a port, removed protective film, opened bags or a device placed in the wrong insert can indicate prior access.
None of these signs alone proves malicious tampering. They are decision triggers: pause setup, keep the evidence and ask the manufacturer whether the condition is expected for your model and region.
What seals and holograms can—and cannot—tell you
Trezor documents holographic seals on the Safe 5. A damaged or missing seal is a reason to pause setup and contact Trezor Support. The seal helps reveal that the box was opened, but it is not a cryptographic guarantee that the device was never accessed. A determined attacker may replace a seal, and a seal can also be damaged during legitimate shipping.
Do not treat the presence of a hologram as a certificate of authenticity. Evaluate the seller, the entire package, the device’s setup state and the official software checks together. A clean seal lowers concern about ordinary opening; it does not eliminate supply-chain risk.

| What to inspect | Normal question | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|
| Retail box and seals | Do seams, labels and model markings look factory-consistent? | Seal damage, replacement film, residue, duplicate labels or unexplained mismatch. |
| Device body | Are protective films, buttons, ports and casing clean and unused? | Scratches, opened port covers, fingerprints, dust or a part that appears replaced. |
| Cable and accessories | Are all items present and packaged as the model documentation describes? | Missing cable, substituted accessory, opened bag or handwritten material. |
| Cards and leaflets | Are printed materials factory-printed and consistent with the model? | Handwritten instructions, a prefilled PIN, a recovery phrase or an unfamiliar QR code. |
| Serial and model details | Do the box, device and official software identify the same model? | Conflicting serial information, a different model or software that cannot identify the device. |
Do not enter a QR code, scan a seller’s setup link or call a phone number printed on an unfamiliar insert until you have verified it independently through the manufacturer’s official site.

4. Reject any pre-seeded or pre-PIN device
A legitimate setup generates the recovery phrase on the wallet itself and shows it to you according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The phrase should not arrive in the box, by email, in a support message or on a scratch card. A supplied PIN, existing account, transaction history or completed wallet setup is equally unacceptable.
Never type a recovery phrase into a computer, phone, website or app. Ledger states that a genuine signer never asks you to enter the phrase in those places and that Ledger will never ask for the 24 words. The same principle applies to any hardware-wallet brand: the phrase belongs only in the device’s controlled recovery flow when you are intentionally restoring a wallet.
If a device arrives with a phrase or PIN, do not “change” it and continue. Anyone who saw the original material may still know it. Photograph the evidence, disconnect the wallet and request a replacement through official support.

5. Use the manufacturer’s software and authenticity checks
Trezor setup checks
Trezor Suite is the official software used to set up and manage Trezor devices. Trezor documents checks of firmware revision identifiers, cryptographic hashes and signatures. Depending on the model and state, Suite can block setup or warn when firmware authenticity checks fail. Trezor Safe 5 documentation also describes a holographic package seal and setup-time firmware and Secure Element checks.

Download Suite only from Trezor’s official domain or an official app-store listing. Confirm that the application identifies the expected model before approving firmware installation. If the software reports an invalid signature, unexpected firmware, an unsupported state or an authenticity warning, stop rather than trying random cables, unofficial firmware or a seller-provided fix.
Ledger attestation and Genuine Check
Ledger documents a cryptographic attestation process that uses a device certificate and a secure channel to verify genuineness. Its Genuine Check is intended to confirm that the device contains a genuine Secure Element and that the software can establish the expected authenticated relationship.
Run the check inside the official Ledger Wallet application obtained from an official source. Treat an authentication failure or warning as a stop condition. Do not approve a reset, firmware change or “repair” directed by an unsolicited message claiming to be support.
How strong are software checks?
Firmware signatures, device certificates and Secure Element authentication are stronger defenses against counterfeit hardware or altered firmware than visual inspection alone. They can show that the wallet is running software authorized by the manufacturer and that a security component is genuine.

They do not prove that the physical device has never been opened. Ledger explicitly says that Genuine Check confirms a genuine Secure Element but cannot verify the device’s physical supply-chain history or detect every unauthorized modification. A hidden component attached elsewhere in a genuine device could therefore evade a successful Secure Element check. Use software validation as one layer, not as permission to ignore a damaged package or a suspicious setup state.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparison: what the two documented approaches establish
| Control | Trezor Safe 5 documentation | Ledger documentation | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packaging signal | Holographic seal; damaged or missing seal warrants stopping and contacting support. | Official guidance emphasizes authorized purchasing and device authenticity checks; a package seal is not a complete provenance record. | Inspect the whole package, not just one sticker. |
| Firmware at delivery | Setup-time checks are documented; firmware revision IDs, hashes and signatures are checked before use. | Use the official application and its attestation/Genuine Check flow; model-specific setup can differ. | Follow the exact model instructions and treat unexpected preinstalled state as suspicious. |
| Hardware or firmware authentication | Suite can warn or block when firmware authenticity checks fail; Secure Element checks are part of documented setup for relevant models. | Device certificate and secure-channel attestation verify genuineness; Genuine Check confirms a genuine Secure Element. | A passed check lowers counterfeit risk but is not proof of untouched physical history. |
| Support and returns | Guidance says to pause and contact Trezor Support when a seal is damaged or missing. | Guidance says to use official channels and never disclose the recovery phrase; returned units should not be resold. | Keep photos and purchase records and follow the manufacturer’s return instructions. |
| Supply-chain transparency | Authorized seller status and package condition remain important. | Ledger’s October 15, 2026 incident demonstrates that genuine devices can be opened and returned to distribution. | No single visual or software test establishes complete provenance. |
What to do when anything looks wrong
- Stop setup. Do not create a wallet, approve firmware, connect the device to a computer again or transfer funds to it.
- Disconnect it safely. Remove the cable and keep the device, box and inserts together. Do not disassemble it; opening the casing can destroy evidence and may affect a return.
- Preserve evidence. Keep your photographs, order confirmation, seller details, tracking record and a written description of what you observed.
- Contact official support. Navigate to the manufacturer’s site yourself and use its support channel. Explain the package condition and authenticity result without including your recovery phrase or PIN.
- Follow the authorized return process. Ask whether the manufacturer wants the device returned, replaced or retained for investigation. Do not send a recovery phrase with the device or in the parcel.
- Replace rather than rehabilitate when advised. A suspicious device is not made trustworthy by a factory reset, a new PIN or a fresh-looking seal.
If you already used the device
If you wrote a recovery phrase into a computer, phone, website or message, treat that phrase as exposed. Create a new wallet on a known-good device obtained through an authorized channel and, after confirming the new backup, move assets according to the relevant network’s normal transfer process. If the suspect device itself generated the phrase but its physical integrity is now in doubt, ask official support for the safest replacement procedure before relying on that wallet for additional funds.
Prepare and fund a replacement safely
- Buy the replacement through the manufacturer or a current authorized reseller.
- Photograph the unopened package and inspect it before connecting anything.
- Install the official wallet application from the manufacturer’s domain or official app store.
- Complete firmware, signature, certificate and Secure Element checks required for the model.
- Generate a new recovery phrase on the device. Write it by hand on the manufacturer’s recommended backup material and store it offline in a place protected from theft, fire and unauthorized access.
- Confirm that you can verify the backup using the device’s recovery procedure without entering it into any software or website.
- Only then receive a small test amount, verify the address on the device screen, and proceed with larger transfers when you are satisfied that the address and network are correct.
The recovery phrase is more important than the box. Anyone who obtains it can generally control the associated assets, while a person who only sees the public receiving address cannot use that address to recreate the wallet.
A practical pre-funding checklist
- Seller identity matches the manufacturer’s current authorized list for your region.
- Order, seller and delivery records are saved.
- Photos show the package before opening.
- Seals, film, printing and seams show no unexplained alteration.
- All model-specific contents are present and factory-packaged.
- No recovery phrase, PIN, existing account or handwritten setup material arrived with the device.
- The manufacturer’s official software identifies the expected model.
- Firmware signatures, hashes, certificates or other required checks pass.
- No warning, failed attestation or unexpected firmware state remains unresolved.
- A new backup was generated on the device and has never been entered into software or a website.
- No funds will be transferred until every earlier item is complete.
The bottom line
Trust the sequence, not a single clue. Authorized seller provenance comes first; package and hologram inspection can reveal handling; a clean, device-generated backup rules out the most obvious pre-seeding scam; and official firmware and hardware-authentication checks reduce counterfeit risk. Because those checks cannot establish a complete physical chain of custody, any unexplained damage, preconfigured state or authenticity warning should end the setup. Stop, preserve your records, contact official support and replace the device if advised—before the wallet ever receives money.
