How to Tap In and Out on MRT Jakarta With a Contactless Bank Card

To use a bank card at an MRT Jakarta gate, use a supported Indonesian bank electronic-money card: Mandiri e-Money, BCA Flazz, BRI BRIZZI, BNI TapCash or JakCard. Tap that same card at your origin gate and again at your destination gate. MRT Jakarta’s passenger terms require one Transport Card for both taps.

Do not assume that an ordinary contactless credit or debit card, including an international Visa or Mastercard, will work when touched directly to a passenger gate. MRT Jakarta lists credit-card payments through channels such as the MyMRTJ app and ticket machines separately from the named stored-value cards. The operator’s published materials also state a minimum entry balance equal to the maximum fare on any MRT Jakarta route, but the reviewed terms do not state a current rupiah amount.

Which bank cards can you tap at MRT Jakarta gates?

MRT Jakarta identifies these bank-issued electronic-money cards as payment options:

  • Mandiri e-Money
  • BCA Flazz
  • BRI BRIZZI
  • BNI TapCash
  • JakCard

These are stored-value transport cards. They are different from a conventional contactless credit or debit card that authorizes each purchase against a bank account or credit line. MRT Jakarta’s published payment lists name the five electronic-money products above for transport-card use; they do not establish that a generic tap-to-pay bank card is accepted directly at the gate.

The operator’s 2024 annual report, published in 2025, records 22,672,766 rides paid with the “Bank Electronic Card” method. It says those cards represented 55.54% of total ridership in 2024, making them the most widely used payment method in that report. The report’s category includes Brizzi, Flazz, e-Money, TapCash and JakCard. Those figures describe 2024 usage, not a forecast for the current year.

What “contactless bank card” means in this context

The phrase can describe two different things:

Credential What MRT Jakarta’s published material establishes What you need
Named bank electronic-money card Directly listed as a Transport Card option for MRT Jakarta A physical card with enough stored value and the same card for entry and exit
Ordinary contactless credit or debit card Direct gate acceptance is not established in the reviewed operator sources Check current MRT Jakarta guidance before relying on it; use a listed card or another published channel instead
Credit card used through MyMRTJ or a ticket machine Credit cards are listed through those channels separately The app or machine’s payment flow, rather than a direct bank-card tap at the gate
QRIS Tap Available at stations as a phone-based ticket method An NFC-capable Android phone and a supporting bank or digital-wallet app

In practical terms, buy or load one of the five listed electronic-money cards if you want the straightforward physical-card gate experience. A card merely carrying a contactless symbol is not proof that it can be used at an MRT Jakarta gate.

Before you travel: check the card and balance

Confirm the card type

Look at the issuer and product name. The card should be one of the five products MRT Jakarta currently lists. Do not substitute a generic RFID or NFC card, a hotel key card, or another bank’s contactless payment card.

Keep enough stored value

MRT Jakarta’s passenger terms state that the balance at entry must be at least the maximum fare for any MRT Jakarta route. The official terms reviewed for this guide do not provide a current rupiah figure. Because fares and operating policies can change, check the latest MRT Jakarta notice or ask station staff for the current threshold before a trip.

Top up through the card issuer’s supported channel before you reach the gate. Allow for any issuer-specific processing time or activation step. If you cannot verify that a top-up has reached the card, carry another published payment option rather than presenting a card with an uncertain balance.

Plan a backup

A backup is useful if a card is damaged, rejected, or short of value. MRT Jakarta’s current-period notices list MyMRTJ, MyMRTJ Lite ticket machines, QRIS Tap and station ticket-counter purchases in addition to bank electronic-money cards. Availability and detailed payment partners can change, so verify the current station options when you travel.

Know what “minimum balance” does and does not tell you

The rule is a qualification for entry, not a published fare quote. It means the card must be able to cover the highest possible MRT Jakarta fare when you tap in, even if your actual trip is shorter. The operator’s terms do not state the current maximum-fare amount in rupiah, and guessing can leave a card unusable at the gate. Check an official fare notice, issuer information or a station representative close to your travel date.

How to tap in and tap out with a supported card

  1. Choose a listed card. Bring Mandiri e-Money, BCA Flazz, BRI BRIZZI, BNI TapCash or JakCard, and make sure it has at least the operator’s required entry balance.
  2. Go to the passenger gate at your origin station. Use the gate marked for passenger entry rather than a ticket machine or service counter.
  3. Present the card to the reader. Hold the card to the gate reader until the gate acknowledges the transaction and opens. Keep other contactless cards away from the reader so the intended card is presented.
  4. Keep that exact card with you. Do not lend it to another passenger or switch to a different card during the journey. The card used for entry is the card you must use for exit.
  5. At your destination, present the same card at the exit gate. Tap the identical Transport Card used at origin and wait for the gate’s response.
  6. Collect the card and check the result. If the gate does not accept the tap, do not repeatedly force the card against the reader. Move aside and ask station staff for help.

The same-card requirement is explicit in MRT Jakarta’s passenger transport terms: “Penumpang hanya dapat melakukan tap-in dan tap-out menggunakan Kartu Transportasi yang sama,” meaning passengers may tap in and tap out only with the same Transport Card.

Why the same card matters

The entry and exit taps form one journey record. Using a different card at the destination is not supported by the stated terms, even if both cards are issued by the same bank or carry the same passenger’s name. Keep the physical card in the same wallet or holder throughout the trip and hand it to the gate reader when needed.

If someone is travelling with you, each passenger should use that passenger’s own payment credential and complete both taps with it. Do not tap several cards together or attempt to use one card for multiple passengers unless current station instructions specifically allow it.

For families or groups, label cards before entering so they are not mixed up in a shared wallet. A card that was used for entry should remain with that rider until the exit tap is complete. The same principle applies if you move the card into a phone case or another holder during the ride: move it back carefully and do not accidentally present a different credential.

What to do when a tap fails

The reviewed MRT Jakarta terms do not publish a complete recovery sequence for a rejected tap, insufficient balance, unreadable card or mismatched entry and exit card. The safest response is to use the gate intercom or approach station personnel and explain what happened.

The card is rejected at entry

  • Remove the card from a crowded wallet and present only the intended card.
  • Check whether it is one of the five cards currently listed by MRT Jakarta.
  • Consider whether the balance meets the maximum-fare entry requirement.
  • If the reader still rejects it, stop trying random cards and ask staff to check the transaction.

The balance may be insufficient

Do not assume that a recent top-up is immediately usable. Follow the issuer’s instructions for loading and, if necessary, activating stored value. If the card cannot be brought above the required threshold, use a ticket-counter, machine, MyMRTJ or QRIS Tap option that is available at the station.

You no longer have the entry card

Do not substitute another bank card at the exit. Tell station staff that the original Transport Card is unavailable and provide the details they request. The published terms do not specify the exact fee, verification method or administrative remedy, so only staff can confirm the applicable procedure.

The reader appears to have charged or opened incorrectly

Save any receipt or app confirmation, note the station and approximate time, and report the issue before leaving the station if possible. Keep the card available for inspection. MRT Jakarta’s public terms reviewed here do not set out a universal refund or dispute timetable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A wallet contains several contactless cards

Separate the intended transport card before tapping. Multiple cards can make it unclear which credential the reader detects, and the gate may not respond as expected. Never keep tapping different cards until one opens; that can create a record on the wrong card. Ask staff to identify the successful transaction first.

Alternatives if you do not have a supported physical card

Method Device or purchase point Key requirement Entry and exit credential
MyMRTJ MyMRTJ mobile app Use a payment option currently offered in the app Follow the app’s ticket instructions; do not treat it as proof that a physical credit card taps directly at the gate
MyMRTJ Lite Ticket vending machine Complete the machine’s payment and ticket process Use the ticket or credential issued by the machine
QRIS Tap Android phone and passenger gate NFC-capable Android phone plus a supporting bank or digital-wallet app Use the same phone/app flow for the required entry and exit taps
Station counter Ticket counter Purchase through station staff Use the ticket or method supplied by the counter

These alternatives are not interchangeable with a physical card. A ticket bought in an app or machine follows that channel’s instructions, while a QRIS Tap journey uses the phone and supporting application. Keep the credential required by the chosen method available until you have exited.

QRIS Tap procedure

MRT Jakarta’s 2025 QRIS Tap guidance says customers can purchase tickets at all stations through the NFC feature on an Android phone. The described flow uses a supporting bank or digital-wallet application and a yellow QRIS Tap sticker at the passenger gate.

  1. Open a participating bank or digital-wallet app that supports QRIS Tap.
  2. Ensure the Android phone’s NFC function is enabled.
  3. At the gate, tap the phone on the yellow QRIS Tap sticker for entry.
  4. Keep the same phone and app credential available during the journey.
  5. At the destination, tap the phone on the QRIS Tap sticker for exit.

QRIS Tap is a phone-based alternative. It does not require a physical bank electronic-money card, and its availability depends on the supporting app and current operator instructions. An iPhone or an Android phone without NFC does not meet the device description in that guidance; use another listed channel if your device cannot perform NFC.

Credit cards, international cards and tourists

A foreign-issued Visa or Mastercard may be contactless at other merchants in Indonesia, but that fact does not establish direct acceptance at an MRT Jakarta passenger gate. The operator’s published lists distinguish bank electronic-money cards from credit-card payments offered through MyMRTJ or ticket machines.

Tourists who do not already hold a listed Indonesian electronic-money card should check the station’s current counter, vending-machine and app options before entering the paid area. If you choose to obtain a local stored-value card, confirm the issuer’s purchase, top-up, activation and remaining-balance rules. MRT Jakarta’s list identifies the card products; it does not, in the materials reviewed here, provide a universal rule about where every visitor can buy or reload each one.

Do not buy a generic “NFC transit card” online solely because its description mentions Jakarta. The relevant question is whether the exact product is one MRT Jakarta names and whether it can be loaded with enough value. Issuer branding, card design and contactless logos are not substitutes for operator confirmation.

How to choose the right payment method

  • Already own a listed card: Check its stored value, use it to tap in, and retain it for the exit tap.
  • Have only a contactless credit or debit card: Do not rely on a direct gate tap unless current MRT Jakarta guidance explicitly confirms it. Use MyMRTJ, a ticket machine, QRIS Tap or a station counter instead.
  • Have an NFC Android phone and a compatible app: QRIS Tap may be the most direct phone-based option, subject to current app and station support.
  • Need assistance or have an uncertain balance: Visit the counter before entering the paid area and ask which payment methods are operating at that station.
  • Travelling with several people: Give each rider a separate credential and keep each credential paired with its own entry and exit taps.

Published usage figures and what they mean

PT MRT Jakarta’s 2024 annual report, published in 2025, counted 22,672,766 rides under the “Bank Electronic Card” payment method. The report says this represented 55.54% of total ridership and was the largest payment category that year. It names Brizzi, Flazz, e-Money, TapCash and JakCard within that category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The numbers show that stored-value bank cards were widely used; they do not establish that every contactless bank product works at the gate, nor do they predict the payment mix for 2026. They also do not provide a current fare, a top-up fee or a refund policy. Use them as context for the five named products, not as a guarantee about an unlisted card.

Rules and facts to verify before each trip

Payment channels are operational information, not a permanent guarantee. MRT Jakarta’s current-period notice lists the five bank electronic-money cards alongside MyMRTJ, MyMRTJ Lite machines, QRIS Tap and station-counter purchases, but individual app partners, device compatibility and station procedures can change.

  • Check the latest MRT Jakarta passenger and payment notice.
  • Confirm that your card product is still listed.
  • Verify the current minimum entry balance; the published terms reviewed here state the rule but not a rupiah amount.
  • Make sure your phone, app and NFC function meet QRIS Tap requirements if you plan to use that method.
  • Ask station staff before entering if you are unsure whether a credit card, foreign card or newly purchased card is accepted.
  • Keep a backup payment method separate from the primary card in case the first credential is lost or unreadable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every contactless card works: A contactless symbol alone is not evidence of MRT Jakarta gate acceptance.
  • Using one card to enter and another to exit: The operator’s terms require the same Transport Card.
  • Entering with a low balance: The required threshold is tied to the maximum fare, not a figure you should guess.
  • Mixing QRIS Tap and a physical card: Treat the phone/app credential as a separate payment path and keep the same credential for the journey.
  • Relying on an old station experience: Payment channels, supporting apps and operating notices can change.
  • Tapping through a stuffed wallet: Present one credential at a time to avoid selecting the wrong card.
  • Leaving after a disputed tap: Report an apparent incorrect charge or failed exit to station staff before leaving, when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Must the entry and exit card be identical?

Yes. MRT Jakarta’s passenger terms say passengers may tap in and tap out only with the same Transport Card. Two cards from the same issuer are still different cards.

What is the minimum balance?

The balance at entry must be at least the maximum fare for any MRT Jakarta route. The cited terms do not state a current rupiah figure, so check the latest operator notice or ask staff rather than guessing.

Does a contactless logo prove that my card works?

No. The logo describes the card’s payment technology, not MRT Jakarta gate eligibility. Confirm that the product is an operator-listed electronic-money card or use another official channel.

Can I use one card for two passengers?

The terms require the same card for each journey’s entry and exit. Unless station staff expressly provide different instructions, each passenger should use a separate credential and complete both taps with it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I lose the card I used to enter?

Do not tap a replacement card at the exit. Explain the situation to station personnel; the public terms do not specify the exact recovery fee or verification process.

Is QRIS Tap the same as tapping a bank card?

No. QRIS Tap is a phone-based method using NFC on an Android phone and a supporting bank or digital-wallet app. It does not require a physical electronic-money card.

Where can a tourist buy or reload each listed card?

The operator’s payment lists identify the products but do not provide a universal purchase and reload rule for every issuer. Confirm availability, top-up method and activation requirements with the issuer or station staff.

What should I do if a top-up does not appear?

Follow the issuer’s loading or activation instructions and do not enter with an uncertain balance. If it remains unresolved, use a currently available machine, app, QRIS Tap or counter option and ask staff for help.

Bottom line for a contactless-card trip

For a physical card, use one of MRT Jakarta’s named bank electronic-money products—Mandiri e-Money, BCA Flazz, BRI BRIZZI, BNI TapCash or JakCard—with sufficient stored value. Tap it at entry and use that identical card at exit. An ordinary contactless credit or debit card is not confirmed as a direct gate method by the operator sources reviewed here, so choose a published alternative unless MRT Jakarta has specifically confirmed acceptance for your card.
