For most individual taxpayers, call 800-829-1040, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in your local taxpayer time zone. Have your tax returns, IRS notices and identity details beside you. If your issue involves a business, international calling, identity theft, a third-party representative or a notice with its own telephone number, use that specialized route instead of starting on the general individual line.
Choose the right IRS telephone route first
The fastest way to reach someone who can actually handle your problem is to start with the line matched to your account and issue. A notice or letter from the IRS normally prints the most appropriate direct number for that case. Use that number and follow the response deadline on the notice before trying a general line.

Alaska and Hawaii follow Pacific time for the published individual telephone window. Puerto Rico has separately listed telephone assistance arrangements, so check the IRS help information for the applicable line rather than assuming the mainland schedule applies.
What to have ready before you call
An IRS representative must verify your identity before discussing personal tax information. Preparing the documents in advance prevents a call from ending because one detail is missing and avoids reading sensitive information while you are searching for it.

Identity details
- Your Social Security number, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number when applicable.
- The full names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth for the people listed on the return.
- Your filing status, such as single, married filing jointly or head of household.
- An ITIN assignment or renewal letter if an ITIN is involved.
Return and correspondence details
- A copy of the prior-year federal return, which may be used to confirm information.
- The return connected with the question, including the tax year and the figures you are asking about.
- Every IRS notice or letter related to the issue, including its notice number, date and response deadline.
- Any payment confirmation, amended-return information or other document specifically mentioned in the correspondence.
Keep the documents in front of you but do not send personal information to an unsolicited caller. Initiate the call using the number printed on an official notice or the IRS telephone route for your situation.
How to get through the automated system
The automated menu is designed to sort callers by account type and problem. There is no single universal keypad shortcut that guarantees a representative. The reliable approach is to select the prompt that most closely matches your actual issue and have the information requested by the system ready.
- Start with the notice number when you have one. A notice-specific line is generally the direct route for the account or transaction described in that letter. Read the notice completely before calling so you know whether the IRS wants a payment, a document, a corrected return or a telephone response.
- Call within the published hours. Individual telephone assistance is listed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the taxpayer’s local time zone. Calling outside that window will not put you into a live-agent queue.
- Select the account type. Choose individual, business or another category that reflects the taxpayer whose account is being discussed. A business caller who uses an individual path may be transferred or asked to call back on the business line.
- Match the menu to the exact issue. A refund question, a notice response, a tax-debt matter and an identity-theft concern can require different staff and verification. Choose the closest specific option rather than a broad category that only happens to sound familiar.
- Complete the verification prompts. Enter or say information only when the official system requests it. If the system cannot verify you, have the paper return and prior-year information available for the representative.
- Accept a callback if it is offered and practical. On most eligible toll-free topics, the system may offer a callback when the estimated wait exceeds 15 minutes and a representative is available during regular hours. A callback is an option, not a promise that every line, time or account will qualify.
- Take notes during the conversation. Record the representative’s name or identifying information if provided, the date and time, documents requested, mailing or upload instructions, deadlines and any confirmation or reference number.
- Read back the action plan before hanging up. Ask the representative to restate what you must send, where it must go and when it is due. If the explanation is unclear, ask for it in simpler terms.
When to call and how long to expect to wait
Published IRS averages provide a planning guide, not a guaranteed queue time. The IRS reports average waits of about 8 minutes during filing season, January through April, and about 15 minutes after filing season, May through December. Individual lines and complex periods can take longer.

Times that are usually more congested
- Mondays and Tuesdays.
- The weekend around Presidents Day.
- The period immediately around the April filing deadline.
Wednesday through Friday are generally shorter-wait days. If your deadline allows, moving the call away from those peak periods can reduce time in the queue. The averages are operational figures published by the IRS, not a guarantee for your particular call.
How the callback option works
When a qualifying toll-free queue estimates a wait of more than 15 minutes, the automated system may offer to have a representative call you instead of keeping you on hold. The offer depends on the topic, line capacity and whether staff are available during regular hours. If you accept, keep the phone number you provide available and continue to monitor the call until the representative connects. If the system does not offer a callback, remain in the queue or try a less congested day; repeatedly choosing unrelated menu options can send you to the wrong group.

Who may speak with the IRS about an account
Federal privacy rules limit what a representative can disclose. The IRS states, “By law, IRS representatives will only speak with the taxpayer or to the taxpayer’s legally designated representative.” A spouse, relative, friend or paid preparer cannot simply call and receive personal account information because they know the taxpayer.
Calling for yourself
Be prepared to verify the return and the people listed on it. Joint-return questions can require information about both spouses. If the IRS cannot establish that you are the taxpayer connected to the account, the representative may provide only general information or ask you to use a different verification process.

A third party generally needs a valid authorization on file. Form 8821, Tax Information Authorization, permits a designated person to receive and inspect specified tax information. Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative, gives an eligible representative authority to act within the scope stated on the form. The representative also needs identifying details for the taxpayer and the return. If authorization has not posted to the IRS records, the professional may need to submit it and wait before the account can be discussed.
Use a specialized route for these problems
Business, corporation, partnership, trust or employment tax
Use the business telephone route rather than the individual line when the account belongs to a corporation, partnership, trust, employer or other business entity. Have the entity’s employer identification number, the relevant tax form and the notice or tax period available. A representative may still require an authorized officer or an approved power of attorney to speak for the entity.
International callers
People calling from outside the United States should use the International Services route. The domestic individual and business numbers are designed around U.S. telephone assistance, while the international route handles overseas callers and can explain which domestic service applies to the account.

Identity theft or account protection
Use the identity-theft line when someone may have filed a return using your information, an account has been locked for protection or the IRS directs you to that specialized unit. Keep identity-theft notices, an identity-protection PIN if one was issued and any requested identification documents together. Do not treat a threatening call from someone claiming to be the IRS as proof that your account is compromised; verify independently through an official channel.
A notice with its own telephone number
The number printed on an IRS notice is usually the best route for that notice. Read the response date and instructions first. Calling the general individual line may not connect you to the staff assigned to the notice and does not extend a deadline printed in the letter.
Tax debt or payment problems
For a balance due, installment-plan question or collection notice, start with the notice number when one is printed. Individuals can use the general individual route and businesses can use the business route when the notice does not provide a more specific path. If the problem remains unresolved or a serious hardship is preventing resolution, the Taxpayer Advocate Service may be an appropriate escalation option for qualifying cases.
When a phone call is not the best channel
Online self-service
IRS.gov tools can answer many routine questions without a live representative. Refund-status tools such as Where’s My Refund, account information services and online payment or notice resources may show the status or instructions you need. Use self-service when the question is a status check or a standard instruction and no personal explanation is required.
Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment
An in-person visit is useful when the required service cannot be completed by telephone or online. Use the Taxpayer Assistance Center locator first to confirm that a nearby office offers the service you need. Then call 844-545-5640 to schedule an appointment. Do not assume every office handles every issue, and bring the identification and documents listed in the appointment instructions.

Taxpayer Advocate Service
The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an escalation path for taxpayers experiencing qualifying problems that ordinary IRS channels have not resolved or that create significant hardship. Gather a timeline of your contacts, copies of notices, deadlines and the specific harm you are facing before seeking help. Advocacy does not automatically cancel a tax, stop every collection action or replace a required appeal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know your rights during the call
Taxpayers are entitled to prompt, courteous and professional assistance; explanations they can understand; accurate and thorough answers; information about appeal or other recourse options; and the ability to ask for a supervisor about inadequate service. Those rights give you a practical standard for the conversation.
- If an explanation is confusing, ask the representative to restate it in plain language and identify the exact form, document or deadline involved.
- If the answer appears incomplete, ask what appeal, review or correction route is available and how to preserve your rights while using it.
- If service was inadequate, request a supervisor rather than arguing with the automated system or ending the call without a record of the problem.
- Write down the instructions and repeat them back so a later disagreement is less likely.
A supervisor cannot necessarily change a legal filing deadline or waive a balance, but can review whether the case was handled correctly and explain the next available step.
Protect yourself from IRS telephone scams
The IRS says its representatives do not make aggressive calls threatening arrest or prison. An unsolicited caller who demands immediate payment, asks for gift cards or cryptocurrency, refuses to let you verify the claim or threatens law enforcement is displaying a major scam warning sign.

Troubleshooting common calling problems
The system says it cannot verify you
Check that you are using the tax year and filing status shown on the return, not a later amended return or a different year’s figures. Keep the prior-year return, the return in question and the notice nearby. If verification still fails, ask what alternative documentation or channel is available rather than guessing at answers.
The line is busy or no callback appears
Callback availability changes with queue length and staffing. Try Wednesday through Friday or a time away from the April filing deadline, then select the menu option that precisely matches the account. If your notice has a direct number, use it instead of the general queue.
The representative asks for a document you do not have
Ask for the document’s exact name, tax year, acceptable substitute and submission method. Confirm whether the deadline is based on the notice date, the date you received it or another event. Request a confirmation or reference number and keep a copy of anything you send.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The IRS will not discuss the account with your spouse, preparer or helper
That restriction usually means the required authorization is absent, expired or outside its stated scope. Determine whether Form 8821 or Form 2848 is appropriate, submit it through the accepted process and wait for it to appear in the IRS records before calling again.
You disagree with the answer
Ask the representative to identify the rule, notice instruction or calculation behind the answer and explain any appeal or review option. If the service itself was inadequate, request a supervisor. Preserve every notice, transcript, payment record and call note for the next stage.
A practical pre-call and post-call checklist
Before dialing
- Identify whether the matter is individual, business, international, identity theft or a notice-specific case.
- Write down the tax year, notice number, response deadline and the one question you need answered.
- Place your Social Security number or ITIN, birth dates, filing status, prior-year return and current return within reach.
- Gather IRS letters, payment confirmations and any authorization forms.
- Choose a time within the published hours and, if possible, avoid Monday, Tuesday, Presidents Day weekend and the April filing deadline period.
Before ending the call
- Repeat the required action, destination, deadline and tax year.
- Ask whether the IRS will send written confirmation or whether you should retain a reference number.
- Clarify what happens if the requested document cannot arrive by the deadline.
- Record the date, time, department and a concise summary of the conversation.
Starting with the correct route, preparing verification information and documenting the representative’s instructions gives you the best chance of reaching the right IRS employee without repeating the same explanation across several calls.
