Switching from a Regular Plan to the Direct Plan of the same Indian mutual-fund scheme can reduce your ongoing expense ratio, but it is not automatically a cost-saving transaction. Before you submit a switch, compare the current TER difference with any exit load, possible capital-gains tax, transaction timing, record-keeping work and the value of distributor advice. Check every purchase lot and SIP instalment separately; then confirm that the post-switch plan, option, units and NAV are exactly what you intended.
What changes when you move from Regular to Direct
Regular and Direct are two plan variants of the same scheme. AMFI describes them as sharing the underlying portfolio and fund manager while carrying different expense ratios and separate NAVs. The Direct Plan generally has a lower expense ratio because distributor commission or distribution expense is not charged to it. That lower recurring cost is the main reason investors consider a switch.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The lower TER does not make Direct a different portfolio, guarantee a higher return or make every switch worthwhile. Direct investors take responsibility for selecting schemes, placing transactions and maintaining their records. A Regular Plan may include ongoing distributor support that you would need to replace if you move.

Why the TER difference matters—and why it is not the whole decision
The total expense ratio is an ongoing charge deducted inside the scheme. Because it reduces the assets attributable to investors, even a small annual difference can compound over a long holding period. The relevant comparison is the current TER for your exact scheme’s Regular and Direct Plans, not a remembered figure from an old factsheet or a different fund.

SEBI Investor uses a hypothetical example of a ₹1,00,000 investment earning a 10% annual return. With a 1.5% Regular expense ratio, the illustrative net rate is 8.5%; with a 0.5% Direct expense ratio, it is 9.5%. These are teaching figures, not a current quote, forecast or market average.
A filed 2024 scheme-information document for a PGIM India mutual-fund scheme gives another illustration: ₹10,000 invested, a ₹1,000 pre-expense return, ₹150 of distribution expense in the Regular Plan and no distribution expense in the Direct Plan. Its listed-expense outcome is ₹770 for Regular and ₹920 for Direct. The document says the example only explains the impact of the expense ratio, is not investment advice or a return guarantee, and excludes tax. Treat it as a scheme-document illustration, not as an expected result for your fund.

A single folio can contain units bought on many dates and through different channels. A multi-year SIP is not one purchase for cost or tax analysis. Build a lot tracker before deciding.
- Identify the account. Record the AMC, exact scheme name, plan (Regular or Direct), option (such as Growth or a distribution option), folio number and whether the units are held in demat form.
- List every acquisition. For each lump-sum purchase and SIP instalment, capture allotment date, units, amount invested and per-unit cost. Import statements from the AMC, registrar and transfer agent (RTA), platform or demat account, then reconcile totals to the current statement.
- Record the distributor status. Note whether an ARN or distributor code appears on each transaction or folio. If the statement is unclear, ask the AMC or RTA to confirm how the units are coded before you switch.
- Add the current value. Record units, the latest NAV date and the value used for your calculation. NAVs are published through fund websites and AMFI; retain the statement showing the date you used.
- Mark restrictions. Add any exit-load window, pledge, lien, systematic instruction or other transaction restriction shown in the current account records.
This inventory prevents a common error: comparing the TER on the whole account while one recent SIP lot is still inside an exit-load period or has a different distributor-code history.
Find the current TER for the exact scheme
TERs are scheme-specific and can change. Use the AMC’s current disclosure and AMFI’s daily TER information for the exact scheme, plan and date. A scheme-information document can explain the difference between plans, but it may not be the current number for your transaction date.

- Copy the full scheme name, option and plan from your statement.
- Check the current Regular TER and Direct TER in the AMC disclosure or AMFI daily TER data.
- Record the date and source of each figure in your tracker.
- Calculate the difference in percentage points:
Regular TER − Direct TER. - Estimate first-year saving:
current holding value × TER difference. Use this only as an approximation because the value and TER can change.
For example, if a holding is worth ₹4,00,000 and the current TER difference is 0.60 percentage points, the simple annual estimate is ₹2,400 before market movement and any change in TER. It is not a guaranteed cash payment or a fixed saving.

Check exit-load rules for every lot
An exit load is a scheme rule applied when units are redeemed or switched under specified conditions. The applicable rule can depend on the scheme, allotment date, transaction route and whether a distributor code was used. Read the current Scheme Information Document (SID), addenda and AMC disclosure for your exact scheme.
The 2024 PGIM India filing cited in the official material illustrates why assumptions are unsafe: it distinguishes holdings routed through a distributor, for which the applicable load may apply, from units invested directly without a distributor code, which have different stated treatment. That wording is an example from that filing, not a universal rule or a current term for every AMC.
Questions to resolve before submitting
- Does the SID treat a Regular-to-Direct switch as a redemption, and does it apply an exit load?
- Which allotment dates are still inside the load period?
- Does the rule differ for units bought with an ARN, without an ARN or through a demat route?
- Are all SIP instalments covered by the same rule, or is each instalment tested separately?
- Can the AMC or RTA confirm the coding of an uncertain folio in writing?
Keep the document version and date you relied on. A historic load table is not evidence of the current rule.
Is a Regular-to-Direct switch tax-free?
Do not assume it is. Tax treatment depends on how the transaction is treated, the fund classification, each acquisition date and holding period, the gain or loss for the relevant lot and your personal circumstances.

Before acting, ask a qualified tax professional to assess the current law for your holdings. Give the adviser your lot tracker, scheme classification, purchase dates, units, costs, current value and the exact switch route. Ask specifically whether the proposed instruction is treated as a transfer, redemption and reinvestment, or another transaction for tax purposes. Do not rely on a platform label such as “switch” as proof of tax exemption.
Information your tax calculation needs
- Acquisition date and cost for each lot, including every SIP instalment.
- Units and value involved in the proposed switch.
- Whether the fund is equity-oriented, debt-oriented or another category under the rules in force.
- The relevant holding period and any losses or gains that may interact with the transaction.
- Whether the plan or option change is part of a documented scheme consolidation rather than an investor-initiated request.
The reader question “Is there any way to switch without tax implications” has no universal yes-or-no answer. A tax-free outcome cannot be promised from the plan names alone.
Value the service you would give up
Direct removes distributor-related expense, but it also moves work to you. AMFI’s guidance says Direct investors research and select schemes and execute transactions themselves. Compare the recurring cost against the service you currently use.
- Selection: Who will compare the scheme with alternatives and decide whether it still fits your goals?
- Execution: Who will submit switches, redemptions, nominations, bank changes and other service requests?
- Monitoring: Who will track portfolio drift, duplicated funds, changing objectives and documentation?
- Tax records: Who will maintain lot-level statements and provide them for a return or audit?
- Support: Who will resolve a failed transaction, incorrect plan code or missing confirmation?
If a distributor’s advice and paperwork are material to you, include the replacement cost—financial or practical—in your comparison. Investors who want individualized fund-selection or tax-impact help can consider a fee-based adviser and verify that the person is currently registered with SEBI; no particular adviser is implied here.
Use a break-even calculation instead of a slogan
Switching makes financial sense only if the expected recurring saving is greater than the one-time costs and the value of services you forgo, over the period you expect to hold the investment.
A simple screening calculation is:
Estimated break-even years = (exit load + expected tax + transaction costs) ÷ estimated first-year TER saving

| Decision input | How to measure it | What can go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Current TER gap | Regular TER minus Direct TER for the exact scheme and date | Using a historical or different-scheme number |
| Holding value | Units multiplied by the dated NAV in your records | Assuming today’s value remains constant |
| Exit load | Lot-specific amount under the current SID and addenda | Applying one rule to every SIP instalment |
| Tax | Lot-level estimate under current law and your facts | Assuming every switch qualifies for a consolidation exemption |
| Service value | Advice, administration and support you would replace | Treating all distributor service as worthless |
| Holding horizon | Years you realistically expect to remain invested | Using a long horizon for money you may need soon |
How to execute the switch safely
Once the cost, load and tax checks are complete, use the prescribed process of the AMC, RTA or platform that holds the units. The screens differ, so follow the labels shown for your account rather than a generic online guide.
- Confirm the destination. Select the same AMC and scheme, then verify Direct versus Regular, the option and whether the destination is an existing folio or a new one.
- Choose the lots or units. If the system permits lot selection, use the lots you assessed. If it does not, ask the AMC or RTA how units will be selected and how the transaction will be recorded.
- Review the disclosure. Read the displayed exit-load, tax and transaction terms. Stop if they differ from the current SID or the confirmation you obtained.
- Submit through the authorised channel. Use the AMC, RTA or your platform’s authenticated switch facility. Do not send instructions through an unverified link or third party.
- Save the acknowledgement. Keep the request number, timestamp, scheme and plan names, units, applicable NAV information and any load or tax disclosure.
- Wait for the completed confirmation. A submitted request is not the same as a completed change. Retain the final transaction statement.
A switch can involve selling or transferring the source holding and acquiring the destination plan under the scheme’s process. Because the tax and load consequences depend on that treatment, rely on the completed statement and the current professional advice you obtained, not on a screen label alone.
Verify the result and update your records
When the transaction is complete, reconcile the account before assuming the work is finished.
- Check that the destination plan is Direct and the option is unchanged unless you intentionally changed it.
- Compare units, NAV and transaction date with the confirmation.
- Check whether any exit load, tax-related amount or other charge appears.
- Confirm that the folio, bank mandate, nomination and demat details remain correct.
- Update each affected lot with the transaction reference and the documents you saved.
- Recalculate the holding value and the projected TER saving using the new plan’s current TER.
If units, plan, option or charges are wrong, contact the AMC or RTA promptly with the request and confirmation numbers. Keep copies of statements before and after the change; they are the evidence needed to reconstruct cost and tax records later.

Do not delete the old statement after changing the SIP. The historical instalments remain relevant to your records even when no further money is invested in that plan.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the wrong TER
Symptom: You calculate savings from an old factsheet or a different option. Correction: Recheck the exact current Regular and Direct TER through the AMC or AMFI and date-stamp the figures.
Treating a SIP as one purchase
Symptom: One exit-load or tax estimate is applied to a multi-year SIP. Correction: Import every instalment and calculate by allotment lot.
Assuming “switch” means tax-free
Symptom: The platform offers a switch button, so you assume the consolidation exemption applies. Correction: Obtain a current, fact-specific tax assessment; the cited exemption is for specified plan consolidations, not every investor-directed move.
Ignoring distributor coding
Symptom: The folio does not show whether an ARN was used, and you assume the no-distributor exit-load rule. Correction: Ask the AMC or RTA to confirm the coding before submitting.
Moving the balance but not the SIP
Symptom: New instalments continue entering the Regular Plan. Correction: Stop or redirect the future instruction separately and verify the first Direct instalment.
Checking only the new NAV
Symptom: A lower or higher Direct NAV is interpreted as a different portfolio or a guaranteed advantage. Correction: Remember that separate NAVs are expected because expenses differ; compare costs and records, not NAV level alone.

A switch is not mandatory merely because Direct has a lower TER. Remaining in Regular can be reasonable when the expected holding period is short, an exit load or tax cost is large relative to the projected saving, your holdings are difficult to reconstruct, or the distributor’s advice and transaction support are important to your plan. It may also be prudent to delay action until the AMC or RTA clarifies an uncertain code or until you obtain tax advice.
The decision should be made separately for each scheme and holding group. You can redirect future contributions while leaving existing units untouched, or switch only lots for which the one-time costs are acceptable. Document the reason and the assumptions so that a later change in TER, value or holding horizon can be reviewed rationally.
