You can switch from ChatGPT to Claude or Gemini without rebuilding everything from scratch, but there is no single account-transfer button that recreates your full setup. Export the data available to you, separately save the prompts, instructions, files, and examples your work depends on, then rebuild and test the workflows in the destination. Gemini Apps documents importing preferences and chat-history ZIP files; the official Claude instructions reviewed here describe exports and Projects, but not a direct ChatGPT-history import into Claude.
What does switching without losing your workflows actually mean?
It means carrying over the reusable parts of how you work—not expecting an archive of old conversations to reproduce your old account. A chat can contain useful context, but a workflow usually also depends on instructions, reference files, tools, permissions, and habits that may not be captured in a conversation export.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Think of each important workflow as a small package with six parts:
- Purpose: the task you use it for and the result you need.
- Trigger: the prompt or sequence of actions that starts it.
- Instructions: recurring rules, preferred format, tone, and constraints.
- Knowledge: files, examples, or facts the assistant needs to use.
- Tools and access: connected services, account permissions, and workspace rules.
- Success example: a saved output that shows what “good” looks like.
For example, a recurring task that turns receipts into a monthly expense summary is not just its most recent chat. It may rely on a prompt that specifies categories, a spreadsheet or reference document, a required table format, and an example of how ambiguous transactions should be handled. Record those elements independently so you can rebuild and check them.

What should I save before changing platforms?
Make a short inventory before you start importing or recreating anything. Prioritize the workflows you use most often, and save the portable parts in ordinary readable files rather than relying on a chat archive alone.
Build a workflow inventory
Use a separate entry for every recurring task. Include enough detail that you—or a colleague with the right access—could reproduce it without guessing.

| Reference material | The names and current copies of files, examples, or source material the task depends on. |
| Tools and access | Connected services, required account permissions, and workspace restrictions. Do not assume these will transfer. |
| Expected result | A representative successful output and a few checks you use to judge whether a new result is acceptable. |
Separate reusable material from personal data
Save the instructions and reference files you intentionally want to reuse in a clearly organized folder. Keep the original export archive as a separate record, and avoid treating every past conversation as a reusable instruction. Conversations can include one-off details, outdated information, or sensitive material that does not belong in a new project.
ChatGPT Projects can organize related chats, files, and instructions, but memory and context behavior can vary with memory settings, plan, and workspace rules. OpenAI’s “Projects in ChatGPT” and “Memory in ChatGPT” guidance distinguish these features; record the instructions and source files each project actually needs rather than assuming that a project’s full behavior is contained in its chat history.
How do I export my ChatGPT data?
For eligible accounts, OpenAI’s documented web route is profile menu → Settings → Data controls → Export. Request the export early: OpenAI says preparation can take up to seven days, and the download link expires after 24 hours.
- Open ChatGPT on the web. Sign in to the account whose data you need.
- Go to profile menu → Settings → Data controls → Export. Follow the confirmation steps to request the archive.
- Watch for the download message. When it arrives, download the ZIP using its link before the 24-hour expiry.
- Check the archive. Confirm it downloaded successfully and contains the conversations or other account data you need before relying on it.
- Store it appropriately. The archive may contain personal or sensitive conversation data; keep it somewhere with access controls suitable for its contents.
OpenAI documents export availability for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible Edu workspaces. Its Help Center says Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspace users cannot use the self-service export in Settings and should contact their workspace owner. If you use a managed account, check the workspace process and permission rules before trying to move work data to a personal account or another service.

The export includes chat history and other relevant account data, but it cannot restore conversations you already deleted. Review the downloaded archive rather than assuming it contains every item you remember using.
Can I import my ChatGPT chat history into Gemini?
Google Gemini Apps Help documents an import flow for preferences and remembered details, as well as a ZIP upload for chat history from platforms including ChatGPT. That is the clearest direct history-import path documented in the official instructions covered here, but eligibility and regional availability matter.
Check eligibility before preparing the upload
Google’s help page says the feature requires a personal Google Account, an account holder aged 18 or older, and access to the source platform. It lists the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom among locations where the feature is unavailable. Check the current Gemini Apps Help instructions for your account and location before building your migration plan around the feature.
Prepare and upload the ZIP
- Request and download your ChatGPT export using OpenAI’s web settings route. Keep the original ZIP intact while you inspect the contents.
- Review Google’s current Gemini Apps import instructions and follow the memory-import flow if you want to bring over preferences or remembered details.
- Use the chat-history upload flow to select the ZIP archive Google accepts. The documented limit is up to 5 GB per ZIP, with up to five ZIP uploads per day.
- Allow processing time. Google says a history upload can take up to a day; do not assume the chats will appear immediately.
- Check what is available after processing, then test a few representative tasks. Keep your separate workflow inventory and files available for rebuilding anything the import does not cover.
Google documents importing preferences and chat history. Its help page does not promise that custom GPT logic, ChatGPT Projects, connected apps, subscriptions, or identical model behavior will be recreated. Treat the import as a way to carry over documented data, not as evidence that every part of your former setup has moved.
Can I move ChatGPT conversations to Claude?
Anthropic’s official instructions reviewed here document Claude data exports, Projects, and Artifacts, but do not document a direct import of ChatGPT history into Claude. For a switch to Claude, plan on exporting the data available to you, preserving important material separately, and rebuilding the workflows you intend to keep.
Set up a Claude Project for a recurring task
Claude Projects are available on paid plans and let you add project knowledge and project instructions. Anthropic says context is not shared across chats in a Project unless information is included in its project knowledge base. Put reusable source material and task-specific context there when multiple chats need the same foundation; do not assume a new chat will automatically inherit context from another conversation.

- Create a Project for a distinct body of work. Use separate Projects when tasks need different instructions or reference material.
- Add the project knowledge. Bring in the files and context the workflow actually uses, rather than importing a large archive as a substitute for organizing its working materials.
- Write project instructions. Translate your saved prompt into clear, destination-specific directions, including output format, constraints, and how to handle missing or ambiguous information.
- Start a new chat and test the task. Compare its result with a saved example and check whether the Project has the knowledge the task requires.
Export Claude data if you also need a record of Claude conversations
Anthropic says eligible individual Claude users and some work-plan owners can request exports containing conversation and account data. On the web app or Claude Desktop, individual users and Team Primary Owners can use Settings → Privacy; Enterprise Primary Owners use Data management. Anthropic says exports are not available through its mobile apps. These are Claude export instructions, not a ChatGPT-to-Claude import route.
What does an export or import actually preserve?
Exports and imports are useful, but they do not amount to a working clone of an account. The most important distinction is between conversation content and the system around the conversations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Item | What the documented instructions establish | What to do for a switch |
|---|---|---|
| Chat history | Google documents uploading ZIP chat histories from ChatGPT and Claude to Gemini Apps. OpenAI says an exported conversations file can be used as reference in a new conversation in a separate ChatGPT account, not as restoration of the former account. | Use a documented import where available; otherwise save the conversations or examples you genuinely need and organize reusable context separately. |
| Preferences and memory | Google documents a memory-import flow for preferences and remembered details. OpenAI distinguishes memory from custom instructions in its help materials. | Review what preferences matter and enter or import them through the destination’s supported controls. |
| Custom GPTs and project setup | OpenAI’s account-transfer instructions say the uploaded export does not move GPTs, project settings, or workspace access. Gemini’s import documentation does not promise equivalent recreation. | Record relevant instructions, source files, and examples, then rebuild the needed task behavior in the destination. |
| Files and connected services | OpenAI’s transfer instructions exclude files and settings from the transfer. The Gemini import page does not establish transfer of connected apps or integrations. | Identify files and tool connections individually. Re-add them only where supported and permitted by the destination account or workspace. |
| Subscriptions and account access | OpenAI says its conversation-transfer process does not move subscriptions or workspace access. | Handle billing and access separately from data migration; verify any account changes directly in the relevant service. |
OpenAI also describes uploading conversations.json from an export into a new conversation in another personal ChatGPT account. That provides reference material in the new conversation; it does not recreate the old sidebar or separate chats. It is a ChatGPT-to-ChatGPT reference method, not a documented way to import the file into Claude.
OpenAI’s GPT help page has included a forward-looking notice about workflow migration for affected Enterprise workspaces. The notice says timing and experience may not be the same for every account. If you use an Enterprise workspace, check the current notice in your own account or ask your workspace administrator before planning around it.
How do I rebuild and test a workflow?
Recreate one high-value workflow at a time. This makes it easier to see whether a problem comes from missing context, a changed prompt, file access, or a destination-specific behavior.
Translate the workflow, rather than copying it blindly
Carry over the intent and constraints, then adapt the instructions to the destination. A useful instruction set says what inputs to use, what output to produce, what not to assume, and how to handle uncertainty. Include a saved example when the exact format or level of detail matters.

Add only the material necessary for that task. A large history archive can be a reference, but it is not a substitute for selecting the authoritative files and explaining how they should be used. If a workflow depends on current information, identify that requirement explicitly instead of relying on old conversation text.
Run a practical acceptance check
Choose several representative inputs, including a normal case and a case that previously required judgment. Compare the new output with saved successful examples and check:
- Content: Does it answer the same task and include the required information?
- Format: Does it follow the expected structure, length, and output conventions?
- Constraints: Does it honor factual, privacy, and other task-specific rules?
- Sources and files: Does it use the intended references rather than overlooking them or relying on unrelated material?
- Tools and access: Do required connections work under the new account’s permissions?
- Repeatability: Does the workflow work on more than one example, including an edge case?
Fix failures at their source: add a missing reference file, clarify an instruction, adjust the prompt, or confirm access to the required tool. Save the corrected instructions and a successful result so the next run does not depend on trial and error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which destination is a better fit for my workflows?
The practical difference is not that one service automatically preserves everything. It is the migration path documented for your account and how you will organize persistent task context after moving.
| Decision point | Gemini Apps | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Chat-history route documented here | Google documents ZIP history uploads from ChatGPT and Claude, subject to eligibility, regional, size, and upload-count limits. | The Anthropic instructions reviewed here do not document direct ChatGPT-history import; plan to rebuild from saved material. |
| Preferences and memory | Google documents a flow to import preferences and remembered details. | Project instructions and project knowledge are documented ways to provide persistent task context; the sources reviewed here do not establish a ChatGPT memory-import flow. |
| Context across project chats | The cited import instructions do not establish how every project or chat context will be recreated. | Anthropic says Project chat context is not shared across chats unless included in project knowledge. |
| Eligibility or plan detail established here | Personal Google Account, age 18 or older, source-platform access, and regional exclusions apply to the documented import feature. | Projects are available on paid plans. Claude data export eligibility varies by account type and work-plan role. |
| Best first step | Check that the import feature is available for your account and location, then test the ZIP and memory flows. | Build a Project around one priority workflow, add its knowledge and instructions, and test it against saved examples. |
Choose based on the work you need to continue, not the existence of an archive alone. If importing past chats is central, first verify Gemini’s availability for your account and region. If your priority is a clean, reusable workspace for task-specific material, evaluate whether Claude Projects fit the way you separate instructions and knowledge across work.
When is it safe to stop using the old setup?
Do not retire the old setup simply because an export completed or an import appears in the new account. Keep access to the original account while you verify the workflows you depend on, especially any task involving files, tools, or workspace permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I recover deleted ChatGPT conversations by exporting my data?
No. OpenAI’s export guidance says conversations deleted before the export cannot be restored through that archive. If a conversation is still available and important, preserve it before deleting or changing access.
Can I export Claude data from the mobile app?
Anthropic says exports are not available through Claude’s mobile apps. Eligible users should use the web app or Claude Desktop route that applies to their account type.
Does uploading a ChatGPT export to another ChatGPT account recreate the old chat list?
No. OpenAI describes uploading the export’s conversations file into a new conversation as a way to provide reference material. It does not restore the original separate chats or sidebar.
Will my Claude Project automatically remember information from every chat in it?
Not necessarily. Anthropic says context is not shared across Project chats unless information is included in the Project knowledge base, so decide which material should be made available there.
